Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) as expected

yesterday, but what was probably less expected

was the come-from-behind manner of the win

in the nine-horse field.

The Michael Clements-trained smart

after settling in the first few, but it is also true that

Nature Strip also ran fourth first-up

last spring in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick but bounced

back to take out the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley three

weeks’ later.

“He was on the ball, flew out and wanted to get going, albeit he

wasn’t miles in front, he was just coasting and doing it strongly,” jockey

McDonald said.

“He just got tired the last furlong (200 metres). He was leading all the

way up to then.

“It’s what happened last prep as well, he failed first up and then got better

with a bit of racing under his belt.”

Waller said: “He was a bit fresh and will improve with the run, he just

jumped and charged for the first two furlongs (400 metres).”

It is perhaps unfair that the focus for most was on the beaten brigade when

the consistent Gytrash - whose Flemington record now sits at three from three -

provided his Morphettville trainer Gordon Richards with his first Group 1 victory.

"I am 68 and I’ve won my first group 1," said Richards, who has the chance

to double his Group 1 tally with Bold Star (Needs Further) in Saturday’s

Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m).

"If ever I was going to win one, this horse was going to do it. He’s just

a machine. All these lunatic owners were standing here waiting for the

instructions and I just said to Mark (Zahra), you’ll work it out.

"Two of them go hard and you’ll be coming over the top of them as

long as we can keep up.

"Jason Holder rides him fast work over there and he said this horse

frightens him he goes that fast, but you can’t tell everybody that before the

race because if he goes like a busted arse, you look like an idiot."

Redzel’s co-trainer Peter Snowden and jockey Kerrin McEvoy

considered lodging a protest after he and Gytrash raced tightly in the

closing stages, but the pair elected not to proceed to the stewards’ room.

"He just got crowded over that last furlong but it was a great run,"

McEvoy said.

"He's shown that he's come back in great order. He fought really hard."

Gytrash (4 g Lope De Vega - Miss Barley by Fastnet Rock) was

purchased for $40,000 at the 2017 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale

by Richards from the Maluka Thoroughbreds draft. From 15 starts, he has

won seven and placed a further seven times for prize-money earnings of

$886,750.

The sprinter had first been offered at the 2016 Inglis Great Southern

Weanling Sale where he made $70,000 to the bid of New Zealander John

Corcoran.

Gytrash was bred by Packing Investments Australia and Haltrow

and Glastonbury Farms, who consigned him as a weanling at Oaklands

Junction.

“He was always a lovely type as a weanling, a big, strong chestnut just

as he is now, and for a Lope De Vega to make $70,000 as a weanling back

then, he really did stand out in that sale,’’ Glastonbury Farms’ Duncan

Grimley said.

“He might have surprised the punters

a bit today but he didn’t surprise us. He’s always been a quality sprinter

and it’s great to see him win a Group 1.

“That’s what you breed them for, to make nice money and to see them

go on and win at the top level, so it’s a fantastic result for everyone.”

Luke Anderson of Maluka Thoroughbreds said: “We’re really proud to

see Gytrash do what he did today. He was always a lovely type and this is

what it’s all about for us, presenting quality yearlings to sell that we believe

can go on to Group 1 success.”

Gytrash is one of five named foals and two winners for the unraced

mare Miss Barley, who is a half-sister to the Listed winner Strawberry

Storm (Thunder Gulch).

Strawberry Storm is also the dam of the stakes-placed Movie (Red

Ransom), who in turn is the dam of Listed winner Goodfella (Snitzel).

Miss Barley was sold for just $4,000 to Perth trainer Justine Erkelens

at the 2017 Magic Millions Perth Winter Mixed Sale and she has Gytrash’s

unraced three-year-old half-sister Outlaw Miss (Rubick) and two-year-old

filly Pouakai (Demerit) in work.

She was covered last November by Universal Ruler (Scenic) after

missing the previous year.

Gytrash is the tenth Group 1 winner for former shuttler Lope De Vega

(Shamardal), who stands at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland for a fee of €100,000.

Alligator Blood prevails in a C S Hayes for the ages

Queensland’s rags-to-riches gelding Alligator Blood (All Too Hard),

the unwanted yearling, and New Zealand’s shining light Catalyst (Darci

Brahma) evoked memories of Australia’s great match races with a thrilling

duel in the C S Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) earlier on the Flemington card.

Yesterday’s three-year-old race - narrowly won by Alligator Blood after

a stirring performance to hold off a sustained challenge from Catalyst,

previously unbeaten this season in his home country - can justifiably

stand alongside the 1986 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), the 1999 Caulfield

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and the 2002 Yalumba Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) among

others.

Bonecrusher (Pag-Asa) and Our Waverley Star (Star Way) at Moonee

Valley; Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) versus Testa Rossa (Perugino) and

Lonhro (Octagonal) duelling with Sunline (Desert Sun), both at Caulfield,

are synonymous with those great races and now Alligator Blood and

Catalyst’s C S Hayes Stakes at Flemington can be talked about long after

they are retired.

The $160,000 contest was not the feature on the Flemington card when

the program was released, but it was being billed as a potential classic

between two emerging stars in the lead-up, and they did not disappoint.

Ryan Maloney, an adopted Queenslander who made the Sunshine

State home in 2018, immediately took Alligator Blood to the front, while

James McDonald pushed forward on Catalyst to sit on his outside to

ensure the favourite did not gain a significant break on his rival.

The duo paired off before the 400 metres, going head and head for the

entirety of the famous Flemington home straight before it was Alligator

Blood who nosed out New Zealand’s rising star by a short-head.

Lightly raced three-year-old Chenier (Medaglia d’Oro), who missed

the spring through injury, made an encouraging return to finish a length

away in third.

Maloney said Alligator Blood “wanted it more” in the final strides

and the stature of the race was not lost on Alligator Blood’s trainer David

Vandyke as the horses returned to scale.

"Well that's what racing is all about," Vandyke said.

"I looked up at the sectionals there and they were rolling before the

corner.

"I thought 'gee whiz he's going to have

to be good'.

"What about that? That will go down in history, that race will. The little

Queenslander gets up off the canvas and comes back and does it.

"That was amazing. It was Australia and New Zealand. Fantastic. Now

we're looking forward to the Australian Guineas.

"They are a couple of stars, those two."

He continued: "They were going stride for stride and when he just got

the edge that last 50 metres and showed his class I thought 'wow, that's his

best performance'."

The two protagonists are set to return to Flemington in 13 days’ time

for the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Catalyst’s trainer Clayton

Chipperfield is confident his horse will be better suited over a mile.

"I could not be disappointed with that," Chipperfield said.

"We used this race to see if we've got the quality against these colts and

geldings over here and he answered that question with ease, to be fair.”

With rain falling throughout the meeting, the track was downgraded to

a soft 5 by the time the C S Hayes Stakes was run, prompting the Hawkes’

to scratch lightly-raced colt Spend (Snitzel), who ran fourth first-up in the

Manfred Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). It reduced the field to just six runners.

Alligator Blood (3 g All Too Hard - Lake Superior by Encosta De Lago)

has won nine of his ten starts, his only defeat coming when runner-up

to Super Seth (Dundeel) in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), and has

earned $2,205,084 in prize-money.

He was bought by the Ezybonds No.1 Syndicate for $55,000 from the

Baramul Stud draft at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

after initially being passed in.

Alligator Blood is one of two winners for the unraced Lake Superior,

who in turn is a half-sister to Listed winner Cantonese (Redoute’s

Choice) and the stakes-placed Chateau Margaux (Redoute’s Choice) and

Monteaux (Medaglia d’Oro).

His third dam is Tracy’s Element (Last Tycoon), a Grade 1 winner in

South Africa who is also the dam of Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon

Tracy (Red Ransom).

Lake Superior died in 2017 without producing another foal after

Alligator Blood was born.

Light Fingers and blinkers the perfect fit for Flit

A key gear change demonstrated the intent the Godolphin hierarchy

had for MRC Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Flit (Medaglia

d’Oro) and the addition of blinkers proved decisive in the filly’s first-up

Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) victory at Randwick yesterday.

The James Cummings-trained three-year-old led home a Godolphin-

owned trifecta in the $200,000 race, with the filly defeating the Anthony

Freedman-trained Lyre (Lonhro) ($5.50) by one and three-quarter

lengths, with the winner’s stablemate Kiamichi (Sidestep) another half a

length away in third.

The well-backed favourite Libertini (I Am Invincible) ($1.80) could

not make up ground and finished fourth under jockey Tommy Berry, three

lengths behind the winner.

Cummings said Flit, who was spelled after running fourth in the

Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) on November 2, was unlikely to run over an

extended distance any time soon.

"We left them off (blinkers) and she won the Group 1 (Thousand Guineas)

but then she was a little keen in the 2000 metre (fourth, Wakeful Stakes), so

she is probably a little speedy for distances like that," Cummings said.

"But the way she returned and trialled against the older horses, she

was getting to the line well but she couldn't afford to lose her focus for 50

metres when the pressure went on.

"With the blinkers on she was able to apply herself and show the

promise we have been getting from her over the last 12 months.

"I dare say she is the filly to beat in two weeks (Surround Stakes)."

Flit ($11) was the second leg of a winning treble for Hugh Bowman.

"I think the blinkers have really helped, especially over these distances.

It really switched her on," Bowman said.

"Even in the Thousand Guineas, when she went from travelling to

through her gears, she just didn't do that well without the headgear.

"I didn't think she was all that comfortable on the soft ground in the

trial so to just switch on and perform like that on that ground, it is so

encouraging and her work through the line was just as good."

Cummings was also delighted with the third placing of Golden Slipper

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Kiamichi but his father Anthony, the trainer

of Libertini, was left scratching his head after his filly’s underwhelming

performance.

"It is the first time she has disappointed and we just have to get her

home and have a good look at her," Anthony Cummings said.

A Godolphin homebred, Flit (3 f Medaglia d’Oro - Glissade by

Redoute’s Choice) has won three races, all of them at Group level, to earn

$1,028,040 in prize-money so far with the promise of more to come.

Flit is one of three winners for the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 3,

1100m)-placed Glissade, making the Light Fingers winner a half-sister to

the stakes-placed stablemate Flow (Street Cry).

Her second dam is the Group 3 winner Steflara (Zabeel) who along with

Glissade is also the dam of the stakes-placed Pleiades (Redoute’s Choice).

Glissade has a yearling filly by Street Boss (Street Cry), who has been

named Sliders, while she has a yearling filly by Frosted (Tapit) at foot. She

was covered by Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) last October.

| 5 | Sunday, February 16, 2020 Alizee bounces back in Apollo Stakes

| 5 | Brought to you by Follow us @anz_news: click here

Alizee bounces back in Apollo StakesGodolphin’s stakes success at Randwick continued later in the day

when James Cummings’ decision to run high-class mare Alizee (Sepoy)

in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) paid off despite the trainer having

reservations about the wet track.

Alizee was no match for three-year-old Standout (Exceed And Excel)

first-up in the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) when favourite a fortnight

earlier, but Cummings and Hugh Bowman were satisfied with the five-

year-old’s effort.

Yesterday, Bowman was able to settle Alizee closer to the speed and

that proved the difference, with the mare winning by a short-neck over the

well-backed Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock).

Veteran Happy Clapper (Teofilo) was another one and a quarter

lengths away in third.

"She is a lot more settled now and she showed that first up so I wasn't

afraid to let her be where she was comfortable," Bowman said.

"She gave me the confidence to ride her where she was happy and

from barrier one that put her in the gun spot.

"I think the two best horses at that trip fought it out."

Cummings sought feedback about the Randwick surface, which raced

as a soft 7, before committing to yesterday’s race for Alizee.

"We were really 50-50 on whether we wanted to run on a soft seven.

We deliberated over it very carefully," Cummings said.

"I pestered (track manager) Nevesh Ramdhani all week, I even rang

the jockey who did the raceday gallop this morning, Sam Clipperton, and

he gave me a blow-by-blow account.

"She has come back and delivered against some very strong weight-

for-age horses."

The Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Canterbury Stakes (Gr

1, 1300m) loom as potential options for Alizee.

One horse certain to head to the Chipping Norton is the Pat Webster-

trained Happy Clapper, with Tommy Berry giving the nine-year-old

gelding the tick of approval after his first-up effort.

"I was rapt. It was a bit of a sit and sprint and that suited the horses

with a turn of foot," Berry said.

Alizee (5 m Sepoy - Essaouira by Exceed And Excel) has recorded ten

wins and six placings from 26 starts, with prize-money of $3,140,550.

One of two stakes winners and four stakes-performed horses out of

juvenile winner Essaouira, Alizee is a half-sister to Golden Rose Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m) winner and young Darley stallion Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) and

a granddaughter of the Group 2 winner Alizes (Rory’s Jester).

Essaouira has an unraced two-year-old named Tangier (Medaglia

d’Oro), a yearling by Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) and a filly at foot by Sepoy

(Elusive Quality). She was covered by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit)

last November.

Ten for Lope De Vega

Former shuttle stallion Lope De Vega

(Shamardal) landed his tenth individual

Group 1 winner yesterday when Gytrash (4 g

ex Miss Barley by Fastnet Rock) took out the

Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

Flemington. Gytrash joins a star-studded list

of Group 1 winners for his sire including Santa

Ana Lane, Vega Magic and Phoenix of Spain.

Dual Group 1 winner Lope De Vega stands at

Ballylinch Stud in Ireland for a fee of €100,000

(inc. GST).

51 for I Am InvincibleYarraman Park’s champion stallion I Am

Invincible (Invincible Spirit) landed his 51st

individual stakes winner yesterday when the

Anthony Freedman-trained Supreme Idea (2 f

ex Sweet Sister by Snitzel) produced an all-the-

way win in the Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m)

at Randwick. Ridden by Tim Clark, the two-

year-old filly defeated Mission River (Redoute’s

Choice) by a length and a quarter with Dame

Giselle (I Am Invincible) the same margin back

in third. Standing for a fee of $247,500 (inc

GST), I Am Invincible is currently the leading

sire by winners and earnings in Australia. He

was the leading sire by aggregate at the Magic

Millions Goast Coast Yearling Sale in January,

with 42 lots sold for a total of $20,245,000, and

has seven lots on offer at the upcoming Inglis

Premier Yearling Sale.

Slipper path for Supreme IdeaWhile Anthony Freedman has the undoubted

favourite for next week’s Blue Diamond

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in Hanseatic (Street

Boss), stable representative Brad Taylor said

Supreme Idea is likely to head towards the

Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). "It was

a pretty good effort today," Taylor said. "She

will continue to go through the traditional

Slipper path. I wouldn't think Anthony would

do it, but you always have to consider it, is

taking her home for the Blue Diamond next

week but we've got a pretty warm favourite

there. We might just keep them apart and

keep her up here and hopefully get a few

more wet tracks along the way and she'll be a

chance in the Slipper."

Soft against Dame GisellePeter and Paul Snowden’s Dame Giselle headed

into the Lonhro Plate as the warm favourite but

jockey Tommy Berry said she didn’t appreciate

the rain affected track. "She ran well," Berry

told Racing NSW. "The soft surface sapped her

brilliance late. I thought I’d be winning on the

turn but when I let her off the bridle she felt

like she struggled in the conditions." Winner

of the Golden Gift (1100m) in the Spring,

Dame Giselle has already sealed her spot in the

Golden Slipper field and Berry believes she will

be better out to 1200 metres.

Three for DemeritLate stallion Demerit (Lonhro) sired his

third individual stakes winner yesterday

when the Kris Lees-trained Special Reward

(4 g ex Special Kiseki by Special Bond) took

out the Southern Cross Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)

at Randwick. Formerly trained in Western

Australia, the gelding defeated Cascadian

(New Approach) by a long neck with Jungle

Edge (Dubawi) a further length away in third.

"I gave him plenty of time after his first-up

run and he got into the race well on the limit

(53 kilograms)." Lees said. "He will go to

the Newcastle Newmarket next (March 6).”

Jockey Brenton Avdulla added: "He is a better

grade than that but he just needs to put it all

together.” Demerit was euthanised in July last

year after fracturing his tibia in a paddock

accident at Rangeview Stud.

32 for Written TycoonOn the day that celebrates the champion

mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), it was fitting

that her Team Hawkes-trained nephew Ole

Kirk (2 c ex Naturale by Bel Esprit) took out

the Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) on debut

and in turn, landed his sire Written Tycoon

(Iglesia) with his 32nd individual stakes win.

Ridden by Dwayne Dunn, the two-year-old

defeated Nitrous (Deep Field) by a neck with

Chairman's Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner

Mildred (Hinchinbrook) the same margin

back in third. Ole Kirk is out of Naturale

(Bel Esprit), an unraced sister to Black

Caviar and was purchased by International

Thoroughbred Solutions for $675,000 at the

Inglis Premier Yearling Sale from the Gilgai

Farm draft. Written Tycoon stood at Victoria’s

Woodside Park Stud for a fee of $110,000 (inc.

Blue Diamond unlikely for Talindert winnerCo-trainer Wayne Hawkes has indicated the

Ole Kirk is unlikely to back-up in the Blue

Diamond Stakes on Saturday, despite holding

a nomination. "Next Saturday is probably a bit

too soon and to be fair we just wanted to see

how he ran and take stock from there," Hawkes

said. "There's a stack more races than next

week, but we'll take that one today." Hawkes

Racing's Melbourne jockey Dunn rode Ole Kirk

in the majority of his education work and got

extra satisfaction out of the win. "I think being

in amongst that field, it gave him something to

think about, and he turned it on, the sign of a

good horse," Dunn said. "I think him winning a

Listed race today and being related the way he

is, they'll sit back and think about where they

run him now. It is a fitting result that he has won

a race on Black Caviar raceday."

Vanity to BonviciniAfter the feats of Jameka (Myboycharlie),

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace may have

unearthed another Myboycharlie (Danetime)

Oaks contender in Bonvicini (3 f ex Orvieto

by Testa Rossa), who took out The Vanity (Gr

3, 1400m) first-up since the spring yesterday

at Flemington. “We might have to go on a

European holiday and find where Myboycharlie

is and bring him back out here,” Maher told

Racing.com. “I’m quite fond of training them.”

Maher credited owner and breeder Greg Perry

following the race after issuing the riding

instructions for the filly. "He said make sure you

ride her back and cold and let her finish on," the

co-trainer said. "And I think that was the key.

She enjoyed that and flowed into the race under

a great ride by Kerrin (McEvoy)." Pretty Brazen

(Brazen Beau) finished a length away in second

with Meuse (Snitzel) a further three-quarters

of a length away third. Bonvicini's stablemate

Fascino (Charm Spirit) was fourth.

Snowden in no rush with Mount TaboraAfter a victory in the The Glorious Goodwood

Handicap (1600m) at Flemington yesterday,

Peter Snowden, who trains in partnership with

his son Paul, said US import Mount Tabora

(Scat Daddy) will relish Sydney’s wet tracks

but is in no rush to step the four-year-old up

in grade. "I think he'll improve out of sight next

time and I really think he could be a good wet

track horse,” Snowden said. “Maybe we could

give him a bit of a break now and bring him

back for the winter and there might be some

good races for him. The good races in Sydney,

he's probably a preparation away from them,

so we'll let him work through his grades a bit

more and in another preparation he might be

there comfortably." Mount Tabora defeated

Exasperate (Tough Speed) by a length with

Sunday Pray (Manhattan Rain) a short half-

head away third.

Sweet Triscay for Thompson

The Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) via the Guy

Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) is the goal for Sweet

Deal (5 m Casino Prince - Dorothy Evelyn by

Royal Academy) this autumn with trainer John

Thompson adamant the mare has gone to a new

level after her victory in the Triscay Stakes (Gr 3,

1200m) at Randwick yesterday. "She's a mare that

has just got better with age and has just grown in

confidence and Nash (Rawiller) is riding her with

confidence," Thompson said. "She is probably

better on top of the ground too. Mares, if they're

going well, they're going well. She is in the zone."

Sweet Deal defeated Spiritual Pursuit (Snitzel)

by two and a quarter lengths with Pohutukawa

(Medaglia d’Oro) a further length away in third.

Stakes aims for God Of ThunderThe decision to geld God Of Thunder (More

Than Ready) could reap dividends this autumn

as Hawkes Racing prepare to raise the bar for

the talented sprinter after his last-stride victory

Radisson Blu Hotel Sydney Handicap (1000m)

at Randwick yesterday. A week after missing his

scheduled resumption at Warwick Farm when

that meeting was washed out, Co-trainer Michael

Hawkes said the delayed start had forced them

to rejig his campaign. "He was supposed to run

last week then second up in an Oakleigh Plate,"

co-trainer Michael Hawkes said. "Now we may

head towards the Challenge and maybe the

Galaxy." One thing Hawkes is certain of is that the

decision to geld God Of Thunder has been crucial.

"It's a hard thing and people don't like doing it.

You've got to do it when you know the time is

right, otherwise you lose horses," Hawkes said.

"Gelding has definitely turned this horse around

and it was a pretty tough win today."

Baker considering Ideel optionsBjorn Baker will let the dust settle before

deciding his next move with She's Ideel

(Dundeel) after the promising stayer extended

her winning streak to three with a narrow win in

the Catanach's Handicap (2400m) at Randwick.

"I know it wasn't a big margin today but she

was always going to be a touch vulnerable at

the 2400 metres," Baker said. "I think she was

good through the line, she is exciting. It's like

me, I'm still improving as a trainer and she is

still improving as a racehorse." Ridden by Jason

Collett, She’s Ideal fought off the Chris Waller-

trained Dark Pearl (Born To Sea) to score by a

head with Birth Of Venus (High Chaparral) over

five lengths away in third.

Two for Press StatementIncredulous Dream (2 f ex Incredulous by Keep The

Faith) charged late to score at Bendigo yesterday to

continue the stunning juvenile season for trainers

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and also provide

first season sire Press Statement (Hinchinbrook)

with his second first crop winner. A $340,000

Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase

by Spicer Thoroughbreds from the Aquis Farm

draft, Incredulous Dream was having her first

start having finished unplaced in a Cranbourne

barrier trial earlier this month but showed she was

likely to get further than the 1100 metres she ran

over yesterday in the My Hair 2YO Fillies Maiden

Plate. She overhauled Hindaam (Savabeel). Vinery

Six for ClangalangMaster Chum’s (5 g ex Flying Foxtrot by Fusaichi

Pegasus) narrow victory in the Birthday Cup

(Listed, 2043m) at Morphettville yesterday

landed his sire Clangalang (clang) with his sixth

individual stakes win. The five-year-old gelding

defeated Hasta La War (Declaration Of War)

by a nose with Jackthegiantslayer (Excites) a

further three-quarters of a length back in third.

Rothfire returns in brilliant fashionBrisbane two-year-old Rothfire (Rothesay)

could make a belated appearance at the

Sydney autumn carnival after his impressive

return to racing at Eagle Farm yesterday,

winning the $125,000 QTIS Two-Year-Old

(1000m). Robert Heathcote said Rothfire

would now head to The Jewel Prelude

(1110m) at Doomben on February 29 before

the $500,000 QTIS Jewel Two-Year-Old

(1200m) at the Gold Coast on March 14. "I

have put a line through a crack at the Golden

Slipper. The Jewel is set weights and worth a

lot of money so why take on the best sprinters

in the south," Heathcote said. "But I have

put in an entry for the ATC Sires' over 1400

metres. Rothfire is by Rothesay so I have no

doubts he will get the 1400 metres in the Sires'

and probably 1600 metres. We will see how he

goes after The Jewel before any Sydney plans

and we do have the Brisbane winter."

Exondabeach chasing Jewel richesAlso set to feature at The Jewel raceday is the

Tony and Maddy Sears-trained three-year-old

Exondabeach (Tycoon Ruler) who produced

an impressive performance to narrowly take

out the QTIS Three-Year-Old (1000m) at Eagle

Farm. "I reckon she can win The Jewel even

though it will only be her third start," Tony

Sears said. "I am telling you she would have

won by further if she had been able to get to the

outside in the straight and she would have won

more easily." Sears said the filly would not need

to run again before the The Jewel at the Gold

Coast on March 14. "She is only going to get

better in the coming weeks. She has improved

plenty since her only other start (a win at the

Sunshine Coast)," he said.

Weight suis RaqeeqChris Waller’s Sydney visitor Raqeeq

(Champs Elysees) confirmed his rating as

the best-weighted horse at Eagle Farm with

a strong win in the Events @ BRC Handicap

(2200m), carrying five and half kilograms

less than his last start which proved to be

key. Stable foreman Brett Killion said the six-

year-old wasn't up to top-class but was suited

in Brisbane races. "He was very well placed

at the weights and he did get the run of the

race," he said. "Chris likes to assess the races

before deciding whether horses like Raqeeq

stay here or head back to Sydney."

Nothdurft outrides claimIn-form apprentice Baylee Nothdurft outrode

his city claim and increased his lead in the

senior jockeys race with his win on Snitch

(Lope De Vega) in the Family Day Handicap

(1400m) at Eagle Farm. Nothdurft did his

early apprenticeship with Lindsay Hatch and

Ducky Baker in Toowoomba before switching

to premier trainer Tony Gollan at the start of

the season and Gollan believes Nothdurft can

go a long way provided he keeps his weight

in check. "He came to us a polished rider

and he has built on that. Baylee is a smart

young man and he is making the most of his

opportunities," Gollan said. "I am pleased

he could pass the milestone of outriding his

city claim on one of our horses." Nothdurft

has now ridden 228 winners including 80

in the metropolitan area. He now leads the

premiership on 43.5 winners ahead of Ryan

Maloney on 40.

Cellsabeel works ‘sharply’ in exhibition gallopGolden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) favourite

Cellsabeel (Hinchinbrook) galloped at

Randwick yesterday in preparation for the

Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) on Saturday.

Working under Tommy Berry, Cellsabeel was

partnered by her Ciaron Maher and David

Eustace-trained stable companion Etana

(Shamus Award) and Berry told Racing NSW

afterwards: "(Cellsabeel) was working with a

partner that was very sharp and in good form.

I'm riding her next week too so I'm pretty

confident about her chances. I'm really happy

with the filly, she's come along well, she'll

benefit from the run which is a good thing

because it's obviously not her grand final."

Zahra and McDonald suspendedMark Zahra is set to miss the Australian

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) meeting after being

suspended for careless riding aboard

Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner

Gytrash (Lope De Vega). Stewards charged

Zahra with shifting in near the 150 metres,

hampering the runner-up Redzel (Snitzel)

and causing the dual Everest (1200m) winner

to be tightened for room. Zahra pleaded guilty,

but argued he did not think there was any

interference until the final couple of strides.

Stewards issued Zahra an eight-meeting ban

with the jockey choosing to start the penalty

after next Saturday's Blue Diamond Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) meeting. Meanwhile, James

McDonald was fined $1700 and suspended

for six meetings for breaches of the whip

rules aboard Catalyst (Darci Brahma) in the C

S Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m). McDonald will

not miss a Saturday meeting, with his ban

starting after next Saturday and he can return

the following Friday night.

Four horses scratched after Toowoomba raidStewards scratched four horses trained by

Toowoomba's Robert Smith from races at

two tracks after he was allegedly found with

needles and syringes. Tocokoe (Epaulette) and

Madam Mahal (Starcraft) were scratched from

the Gold Coast and Purple Gem (Instinctions)

and Boomtown Babe (Spirit Of Boom)

were scratched from Nanango. An Integrity

Investigations Team inspected Smith's stables

where they allegedly found him in possession

of needles and syringes. In a media statement,

Queensland Racing Integrity Commission boss

Ross Barnett said a QRIC veterinarian attended

to take swabs from all four horses and also the

needles and syringes that were seized. The

samples would be sent for analysis. Barnett

said Smith has denied any breaches of the

rules of racing but the stewards acted swiftly

to ensure the integrity of today's races while

investigations continued.

Flemington pays tribute to Black CaviarBlack Caviar (Bel Esprit) dragged the Flemington

crowd from the grandstands at her first racetrack

appearance since her retirement yesterday, after

an unbeaten 25-start career. Now age 13 and the

mother of six foals, the mare was on parade at the

Black Caviar The Great Horse themed raceday at

Flemington. Before the running of the Lightning

Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) named in her honour, Black

Caviar was paraded in the mounting where her

owner and their families along with trainer Peter

Moody, jockey Luke Nolen, strapper Donna

Fisher and track rider Patrick Bell all gathered

to have another look at the mare. The mounting

yard was lined with fans of the mare with children

displaying Black Caviar placards while Victoria

Racing Clubs members took vantage points in the

stands.

NEW ZEALAND

Dragon Leap dominant in GuineasDragon Leap (3 g Pierro - Pontiana by Redoute's

Choice) took his record to three wins from

four starts when supplementing his Auckland

Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) success with victory in

the Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m) yesterday.

Racing in the Hermitage Thoroughbreds colours

of last season’s star three-year-old The Autumn

Sun (Redoute’s Choice), the Lance O'Sullivan

and Andrew Scott-trained Dragon Leap finished

a length and a half too strong for Scorpz (Charm

Spirit), while Sherwood Forest (Fastnet Rock)

was a further neck back in third. Having won on

debut at Te Rapa in October, Dragon Leap tasted

his only defeat when a neck second to leading

New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) contender

Two Illicit (Jimmy Choux) in the Trevor Eagle

Memorial Stakes (Listed, 1500m) in November.

Derby next for Dragon Leap Dragon Leap is set to reoppose Two Illicit with

the New Zealand Derby his next port of call.

"It was a great ride from Opie (Bosson) and

quite a soft win so it's a great result," co-trainer

Lance O'Sullivan said. "There was a little bit of a

question mark but Andrew and I looked at him

before the race and he really lined up looking

fit and healthy. It was just good to see him put

it all together. One of his main attributes is

his temperament and the way he behaves, as

big occasions just aren't going to worry him."

Looking ahead to the 2400-metre trip of the

Derby, for which Dragon Leap is the $2.20

favourite, O’Sullivan added: "Genetics suggest

he will get it but you never know until you try

however, I'm pretty confident that he will.”

Three in a row for Lightning JackLightning Jack (3 g Per Incanto - La Petite by

Savabeel) brought up a hat-trick of wins when

he took out the Southland Guineas (Listed,

1600m) at Invercargill yesterday. Poniard

(Reliable Man) ran second, beaten a neck, while

Asathought (So You Think) finished a further

length and a quarter away in third. Trained by

Kelvin and Aimee Tyler, Lightning Jack won the

Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m) on January 18

and he has now won three of his eight starts.

“I’ve said all along he is a good horse and

without being over-confident we had expected

him to do that again today,” Kelvin Tyler said.

“He just keeps improving and he liked the step

up in distance so hopefully there is plenty more

in store for him yet.”

The Swan Valley has been full-on

with inspections for the Perth

Magic Millions Yearling Sale that

commences on Monday at 1pm

(WST).

“We got here on Wednesday and it’s been an

encouraging mix of WA and interstate buyers on

the sale-grounds,” TBWA President Brent Atwell

said. “They were still arriving on Friday even

though the temperature topped 40 degrees.

“Apart from our local owners and trainers,

we’ve had Guy Mulcaster, Andy Williams and

Upper Bloodstock’s Ross Lao doing the early

rounds.”

Atwell has catalogued the first yearlings by

Lucky Street as a part of the consignment from

Western Breeders’ Alliance. The G2 Karrakatta

Plate winning son of Oratorio stands at the

Atwell family’s Darling View Thoroughbreds in

Mundijong.

He’s one of six stallions with their first

yearlings alongside Awesome Rock (Gold Front),

Mahuta (Lynward Park), Rommel (Mogumber

Park), Vert De Grece (Geisel Park) and King’s

Troop (Oakland Park).

“The Lucky Streets have been well received

and the feedback has been positive,” Atwell

commented. “The filly from Foo Foo The Snoo

(Lot 21) will hopefully give us a good start. The

half-sister to Cryptic Wonder (Lot 144) has also

been popular.”

Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock) completes a

full circle for Gold Front Thoroughbreds owners

Alan and Sue Olive at the 2020 Perth Magic

Millions. The Breera-based couple bred and sold

him for $575,000 at the 2013 Gold Coast Magic

Millions but retained a share in a syndicate with

Team Corstens.

He won the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes on

Victoria Derby Day at Flemington and the Olives

brought him home to stand in Western Australia.

“We always wanted to get him back here,” Alan

Olive said. “He will be good for WA and there’s 17

of them at the Magic Millions.”

Special Reward provided a last-minute

update to his half-brother by King’s Troop at

Randwick on Saturday. The former Perth sprinter

won the G3 Southern Cross Stakes and trainer

Kris Lees will now set him for the G3 Newcastle

Newmarket on March 6.

The King’s Troop – Special Kiseki filly (Lot

109) is also a half-sister to Showy Chloe (G3 WATC

Sires' Produce St) and El Rijes (LR Perth St). She

is being offered by Taunton Vale who sold Special

Reward for $145,000 at the 2017 Perth Magic

Millions.

King’s Troop (Redoute’s Choice) is a three-

quarter brother to Snitzel and was a class sprinter

in his own right. He routed a Warwick Farm field

by three lengths and then ran out of his skin in the

G3 San Domenico Stakes. He shook off G1 Golden

Slipper winner Vancouver back at Rosehill only

to be collared for a second time by Japonisme.

They were two serious colts but ongoing injuries

prevented King’s Troop from locking horns the

following season.

Mahuta (Commands) was also the victim

of a career-ending setback after a meteoric rise

through the grades in Melbourne. He reeled off

five stakes wins that peaked at Caulfield in the G2

Autumn Stakes (1400m).

Resuming as spring 4yo, he was Group 1

placed in the Memsie Stakes behind Black Heart

Bart before a pelvic injury limited his career to

16 starts. “Mahuta was talented and tough and

his yearlings have that same size and stamina,”

Lynward Park’s Troy van Heemst said. “And his

race record speaks for itself.”

The first Mahuta to parade is the filly from

High Aims (Lot 41). The dam was a Sandown

Lakeside specialist for trainer David Brideoake

before being sold as a broodmare prospect to WA.

Mogumber Park sire Rommel is another

Group winning son of Commands and he has 17

yearlings entered for the Perth Magic Millions.

Mogumber Park has 10 of them starting with

the colt from Girl In A Storm (Lot 26) who will

be one of the highlights from his home base at

Bullsbrook.

Vert De Grece (Ire) has yearlings from a half-

dozen vendors at the Perth Magic Millions and

among the highlights will be the three-quarter

brother to Singapore star Captain Obvious (Lot

172) from Alwyn Park.

Vert De Grece (Verglas) was sold for seven-

figures to Hong Kong after finishing second to

champion 2yo colt Gleneagles in the G2 Futurity

Stakes at the Curragh. He repaid that with a

dominant four-length victory in the G1 Criterium

2yo International at Saint-Cloud.

BY MICHAEL LEE | SPG TURF CLUB

The short-priced race favourite

Countofmontecristo (Echoes Of

Heaven) took out the $400,000

Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m)

as expected yesterday, but what was probably

less expected was the come-from-behind

manner of the win in the nine-horse field.

The Michael Clements-trained smart

galloper’s previous eight wins – between 1200

metres and 1400 metres – were mostly recorded

after settling in the first few, but it is also true

that as a younger horse, his natural speed was

then being fully tapped on.

With age and maturity, a shift to a drop-

back pattern became more noticeable. At the

six-year-old’s last win in the Merlion Trophy (Gr

2, 1200m) - which incidentally broke a drought

of 14 losses since landing the Jumbo Jet Trophy

(Gr 3, 1200m) in September 2017 - he came

from midfield.

Of late as he was geared towards staying

races, there was an even more pronounced

proclivity for waiting tactics, his eye-catching

third in the Singapore Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m)

definitely earning him a swooper badge.

But given the relatively small field of this

yesterday’s contest, and the fact he had drawn

an alley, most pre-race speedmap calculations

had him in and around the leaders.

At the half-mile mark, those who took on

his $9 odds, were running out of fingernails to

chew on.

He was ahead of only Mr Clint (Power) and

What’s New (Casino Prince), cooped up on the

rails, and caught in a backwash of regressing

horses.

The question whether first-time partner

Louis-Philippe Beuzelin had erred in his tactics

or had overestimated his mount’s ability must

have flashed in a few persons’ heads.

It turned out that the French jockey had

simply allowed himself to blend into a race that

was surprisingly packed with pace in the first

two furlongs, and then just trusted his horse to

do the rest.

When the start was effected, they just

flopped out of the gates, quickly finding

themselves drifting at the rear as Loyalty Man

(Fastnet Rock) clapped along upfront with Sun

Marshal (Sepoy) in close attendance.

Beuzelin later admitted he did fret a little

when the Kranji grandstand came into their

line of sight, with Countofmontecristo, who was

raring to go, still cluttered up on the rails when

he should be set alight.

However, they were racing on the Long

Course, and as they peeled off heels, slightly

nudging Gold Strike (Iffraaj) out of the way in

the process, daylight finally broke through – a

wide enough gap between Gold Strike and

King Louis (Medaglia d’Oro). Sun Marshal and

veteran campaigner War Affair (O'Reilly) had

the first whiff of the top prize as they locked

horns, but the complexion of the race was just

about to be turned on its head.

Once rather tradesmanlike in the way he

finished off, Countofmontecristo was a lot more

expeditious in dispatching his rivals. Like an

unstoppable purple flash, he flew in to go and

relegate Sun Marshal into second place by one

length with Gold Strike staying on nicely for

third another three-quarter length away. The

winning time was 1min 34.57secs for the 1600

metres on the Long Course.

While Joe Singh’s champion was posting a

fifth Group win (three Group 2’s and two Group

3’s) from nine wins, the Chairman’s Trophy was

Beuzelin’s first silverware in Singapore. It came

at his first association with a horse who has

built a reputation of becoming a revolving door

for jockeys – he was the 15th partner.

“I had done my homework and saw all his

races. My main goal was to get him as relaxed

as possible in the running,” said Beuzelin, who

came to Kranji in August, with a globetrotting

resume boasting around 300 winners.

Dubai beckons as Countofmontecristo storms home in Chairman's Trophy

Countofmontecristo SINGAPORE TURF CLUB

I actually had to create the opening.

Once he saw daylight, he showed he was a cut above

the rest and went all the wayPHILIPPE BEUZELIN,JOCKEY

| 12 |

“I was only scared there wouldn’t be any

speed and that’s why we thought we’d race

handier at first. But they went really quick and I

decided to drop back.

“However, I was a bit concerned there was

no gap coming up at the 600 metres, and I was

around horses who were stopping.

“I actually had to create the opening. Once

he saw daylight, he showed he was a cut above

the rest and went all the way.

“I knew he had the engine to do it, it was

just a matter of getting the right run. Horses like

him make our job easier.”

A first accolade at the highest level at his

new stomping ground was exactly what the

Barbadian-raised and British-trained jockey

needed to exorcise the frustrating times on the

sidelines through careless riding suspensions

(13 meetings out in the last three months).

“I’ve won a Group 1 in India, the Cesarewitch

Handicap in UK (2010 aboard Aaim To Prosper),

but this is my first Group win in Singapore. It’s an

unbelievable feeling,” said Beuzelin.

“I can’t afford to be suspended anymore. I still

have the ride on Bold Thruster in the Group 3 Silver

Bowl (1400m) in two weeks’ time (February 29).”

The flashy black four-year-old is also prepared

by Clements, who compared to Beuzelin, is a lot

more accustomed to such limelight at Kranji, but

the Zimbabwean-born handler was himself quite

blown away by that 16th Group winner.

“The plan was to get back in midfield as

we thought there wouldn’t be a lot of pace on

paper,” said Clements.

“But there was a fast pace, and even though

he got back further than we expected, it still

worked out good.

“He’s a true genuine horse who always puts

his best foot forward, but I think with maturity,

he gets the mile whereas previously, it was a bit

of a task.

“He settles better now, gets back and sprints

home. I told Louis if he got further back today,

don’t panic as he has been running on in his races.

“He rode him very well. Let’s hope he gets

to stay on Countofmontecristo after that!”

Beuzelin has certainly done his chances of

staying on no harm after such a ride, even if it was

not for the faint-hearted, but though it’s a long shot,

he might even have to pack his bags for the next gig.

With Countofmontecristo nominated for the US$6

million Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m) and US$1.5 million

Godolphin Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) on dirt at Meydan on

March 28, it will be interesting to see what will be the

fallout in that regard in ensuing days.

While an invitation will hinge on the

selection committee, Clements would rather

not harbour any hope at this juncture even if

the Chairman’s Trophy win was not a harmful

addition to his resume when it lands on the

Dubai Racing Club’s handicappers’ desk.

Singh for one was a lot more upbeat his

horse would not be out of his depth against the

best horse in the world in March.

“He had to win today to be considered. I

hope we get an invite after today’s win,” said the

movie-making businessman.

“I actually nominated three other horses

– Gingerella, Eye Guy and Yabadabadoo – but

Countofmontecristo is the only one with a

chance on ratings. It’ll be either the Dubai Turf

or the Godolphin Mile.”

While Dubai dreams can wait, Singh could

not be prouder of what his stable star has

achieved at home – nine wins, including five at

Group level, and more than $1.9 million gained

in prizemoney.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s

Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking

despite being last and a long way off the leader

Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer

Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart

sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow

margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

right grade I can keep him progressing along.

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

A surprisingly slow run Melbourne

Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on Tuesday

turned Australia’s favourite race

into a sprint home that resulted in

the first five horses crossing the line less than

a length apart in a time that was 8.46 seconds

outside of Kingston Rule’s (Secretariat) track

record.

Even allowing for the fact that the race was

run on a soft 5 track, the time was excessively

slow with the leaders clocking a pedestrian

1:44.80 (13.10) for the first 1600 metres.

The final 1600 metres was naturally quicker

but not dramatically so with that distance

covered in 1:40.23 (12.52 200m rate).

The only serious tempo came into the

$7,750,000 race from the 1000 metres with that

final section clocking 59.86 – then 47.13 (last

800m), 35.08 (last 600m) and 23.60 for the final

400 metres.

And in a bumping, keenly contested

finish the Australian-bred Vow And Declare

(Declaration Of War) got the nod by a head

with Prince Of Arran (Shirocco) placed second

and Il Paradiso (Galileo) placed third after the

relegation of Master Of Reality (Frankel) to

fourth.

Next was the appropriately named Surprise

Baby (Shocking), the other local hope who

returned some of the fastest closing sectionals

of the race in coming from 20th to finish (0.9

lengths) fifth.

Surprise Baby ran his last 1000 metres in

57.86, last 800 metres in 45.68, last 600 metres

in 33.79, last 400 metres in 22.77 with his final

200 metres in 11.36.

The winner Vow And Declare, who worked

in the early stages from his wide barrier and

then obtained a perfect trip in third spot under

an inspired Craig Williams-ride, dug deep to

score clocking 59.85 (last 1000m), 46.95 (last

to the front at the home turn and then dashed

clear to defeat her main rival by two and a

quarter lengths in the time of 1:09.89.

California Zimbol’s early sectionals were

very good. Clocked from the 1000 metres, her

200 metre breakdown was: 11.02, 11.25 (400m

in 22.27), 11.83 (600m in 34.10), 11.00 (800m

in 45.10) and 11.25 to give her a fast final 1000

metre time of 56.35.

It was California Zimbol’s fifth race start,

her third win and her first at stakes level. Her

experienced co-trainer Peter Snowden saying

post-race that connections would now target other

fillies’ features over the Melbourne Spring Carnival,

adding that he had always held her in high regard.

Another winner to impress on the watch

at Caulfield was the Godolphin-raced sprinter

Trekking (Street Cry) who gained an eleventh

hour berth into Saturday’s $14 million The

Everest (1200m) by taking out the Schillachi

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m).

After racing back in seventh place on the

rails, Trekking saved ground closer to the rails

at the home turn, hit the front at the 100 metres

and then battled strongly to defeat the speedy

Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi) by a long neck.

Time for the 1100 metres was a fast 1:02.32

(11.33 200m rate), equivalent to 1200 metres in

1:07.98.

And Trekking’s sectionals were very smart,

his 200 metre breakdown (from the 1000m)

was: 10.71, 10.50 (400m in 21.21), 10.91 (600m

in 32.12) 10.68 (800m in 42.80) and 11.20 for a

fast final 1000 metres of 54.00.

The winner of the Stradbroke Handicap

(Gr 1, 1400m) in June, Trekking is now in

tomorrow’s Everest with a better chance than

his odds might indicate in a very strong field.

In the Ladbrokes Stakes (registered as

Caulfield Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) the Irish-bred

import Cape Of Good Hope (Galileo) scored a

narrow but very good win in this Group 1 race at

his Australian debut.

After settling in seventh place, one off the

rails, he got into clear running nearing the 200

metres and then came with a strong late bid to

defeat Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) by a short

half head in a time of 2:02.51.

The early tempo was not strong with the

first 1400 metres clocking 1:28.17 (12.59 200m

rate) with the final 600 metres in a quick 34.34

(11.44 200m rate).

That resulted in Cape Of Good Hope

returning fast closing sectionals of 33.74 for his

last 600 metres, 22.19 (last 400m) with his final

200 metres in 11.31.

That was a very smart effort especially

considering it was Cape Of Good Hope’s first

start since racing at Saratoga in August.

It should also be pointed out that the lack

of a solid early tempo proved costly for the

favourite Avilius (Pivotal) who faced the task

of making ground from ninth in the sprint

home.

His late-closing (1.7 lengths) fourth was

therefore full of merit with Avilius clocking fast

fractions of 33.68 (last 600m), 22.19 (last 400m)

and 11.28 for his final 200 metres.

The Anthony Freedman-trained

colt Super Seth (Dundeel) really

showed his talent with impressive

closing sectional times in his

exciting burst to grab victory on the post in

Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

After settling back in eighth place, tracking

a solid tempo, Super Seth arrived in time to

defeat Alligator Blood (All Too Hard), who had

seemingly held a winning break of five lengths

in the straight, by a nose in a time of 1:36.44.

Super Seth returned the fastest closing

sectionals of the race with his last 1200 metres

in 1:10.73, last 1000 metres in 58.55, last 800

metres in 46.32, last 600 metres in 34.23, and

last 400 metres in 22.56.

But the feature of those times was the 200

metres splits for the last 600 metres: 11.66, 11.25

and 11.31, fractions that quickened off a solid

mid-race tempo.

The runner-up, the David Vandyke-

trained Alligator Blood also deserves

acknowledgement.

He tracked the free-running leader

Roccabascerana (Fighting Sun), went to

the front on turning for home, held a clear

advantage at the 200 metres and was only

caught in the last few strides.

Alligator Blood’s early sectionals were

good, in particular his 1000 metre section of

59.56, from the 1400 metres to the 400 metres.

That mid-race pace was telling for the

favourite Dalasan (Dakakhani) who went

forward from his outside barrier (16) and

settled back in third place, without cover,

behind a solid tempo, so his effort in holding on

for (3.7 lengths) fifth was certainly sound under

the circumstances.

However, there was no such tempo in the

Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), with the

fillies’ classic turning into a sprint home with

Flit (Medaglia d’Oro) claiming a nose victory

from Missile Mantra (Smart Missile) with

Southbank (Fastnet Rock) a short half head

away third.

Time for the 1600 metres was 1m 37.19,

which was almost three seconds outside of the

track record, after the first 1000 metres clocked a

moderate 1:02.26 (12.45 200m rate) with the last

600 metres in a quick 34.93 (11.64 200m rate).

Subsequently, Flit’s rider Hugh Bowman

said the slow pace almost cost his mount

victory, the filly taking a while to accelerate

when a split finally presented in the latter

stages.

The lack of early pace also told significantly

against the runner-up Missile Mantra whose

racing style again saw the Peter and Paul

Snowden-trained filly settle near last before

flashing home in the dying stages for second.

Missile Mantra returned the fastest closing

sectionals of the race with her last 1000 metres

in 58.88, last 800 metres in 46.24, last 600 metres

in 33.98, last 400 metres in 22.40 with her final

200 metres in 11.46.

Earlier in the day, her stablemate

California Zimbol (I Am Invincible) stamped

her potential with an impressive win over the

well-performed Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)

in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Having her second run this preparation,

California Zimbol raced in second place, went

in a keenly contested finish where only a length

separated the first seven at the post.

The winner was the British-bred Chief

Ironside (Lawman) who scored by a short head

from Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs) with Best Of

Days (Azamour) a short head away third in a

time of 1:35.46 (first 1000 metres in 59.41 and

final 600 metres in 36.05).

The runners responsible for the solid tempo

were Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) who led and

Cliff’s Edge, who raced at his girth, and both did

well considering their early efforts, especially

Cliff’s Edge who fought bravely for second

while Dreamforce was far from disgraced in

finishing (0.7 lengths) fifth.

One to catch the eye in the race was Debt

Agent (Thorn Park), a multiple Group 1 winner

in Singapore who was having his second start

in Australia and he made good late ground for

seventh, beaten only a length.

Debt Agent returned the quickest closing

sectional of the race with his last 1400 metres

in 1:21.64, last 1200 metres in 1:09.90, last 1000

metres in 58.33, last 800 metres in 47.09, last

600 metres in 35.16 and last 400 metres in 24.21.

At Moonee Valley’s Friday night meeting,

the quality filly Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)

staged a dashing display in taking out the

Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Having her third run back, she showed

surprisingly good early pace from barrier two

and after almost leading in the early stages,

she settled in third place on the rails, tracking

a solid tempo.

Craig Williams eased her across heels on

turning for home, she then grabbed the lead

on passing the 100m before going on to score

in good style by three-quarters lengths from the

West Australian Vital Silver (Wanted) in a time

of 1:09.29.

Loving Gaby’s early sectionals were

impressive (from the 1000m): 21.21 (first

200m), 32.61 (first 600m), 45.11 (first 800m) and

56.73 for the final 1000 metres.

However, the last word this week goes to

the Jean Dubois-trained filly See You Soon

(Siyouni) who impressed in winning the

Kirkham Plate, for two-year-olds (1000m) at

Randwick on Saturday.

After a slow beginning, See You Soon was last

early on in the six-horse field before dashing home

to score by a short neck from the promising Peter

and Paul Snowden-trained filly Dame Giselle (I

Am Invincible) in the smart time of 57.77.

In a race that developed into a sprint home,

See You Soon showed a sparkling turn of speed,

clocking 32.89 (last 600m) and 21.62 for her

final 400 metres.

And even taking into account the

amount of fast times at Randwick recently,

closing sectionals of that standard are quite

outstanding, especially by a two-year-old filly

who was having her first race start.

The Japanese mare Lys Gracieux

(Heart’s Cry) stamped her class

in no uncertain manner with a

decisive victory in a solidly run

Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on

Saturday – a performance she endorsed on the

clock.

Having her first start in Australia, Lys

Gracieux settled nicely back in 11th place from

her wide barrier before Damian Lane brought

her into the race with a strong, wide move from

the 600 metres.

Momentarily, the three-year-old colt

Castelvecchio (Dundeel) seemed to have

stolen a winning break, but Lys Gracieux went

to another level when asked by Lane halfway

down the straight, and she immediately put

the race beyond question with a quick final 200

metres in 11.22.

She then went on to win by a length and a

half from Castelvecchio, who ran the race of his

life in taking second with the well-performed

New Zealander Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle)

two lengths away third.

Time for the race was a really smart 2:04.21

(12.17 200m rate), equivalent to 2000 metres

in 2:01.57, and 1.27 seconds outside of Winx’s

outstanding track record of 2:02.94 (12.05 200m

rate) established in 2017.

The genuine tempo was set by the Aidan

O’Brien-trained mare Magic Wand (Galileo)

who led the field under Ryan Moore before

fighting back well for (3.9 lengths) fourth.

Magic Wand’s solid early sections were: 23.46

(first 400m), 35.10 (first 600m), 47.05 (first 800m),

59.43 (first 1000m), 1:11.56 (first 1200m), 1:23.67

(first 1400m) and 1:35.47 for the first 1600 metres

(from the 2000m to the 400m).

Lys Graceieu’s final sectionals were

therefore very good - especially noteworthy was

her final 2000 metre time of 1:59.51 (first 1000

metres in 60.77 and last 1000 metres in 58.74).

The other feature of Lys Graceieu’s

performance was her aforementioned final 200

metres in 11.22, which is very smart considering

she produced that burst when needed, despite

having raced at a solid tempo throughout.

The runner-up, the three-year-old

Castelvecchio also did well on the watch,

clocking 59.53 for his final 1000 metres, so too

the third-placed Te Akau Shark who clocked

58.80, the second quickest last 1000 metres of

the race.

While the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)

winner Kings Will Dream (Casamento) staged

a nice effort as he settled near the tail of the

field from a wide barrier, went deep rounding

the home turn and then battled on quite well

for (6.6 lengths) sixth, clocking 59.50 for his

final 1000 metres.

The Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) was also a

race with a very genuine tempo, which resulted

Analysis: In a shock result in this Group 1 feature, South Australian-trained

gelding Gytrash scored a first-up win, his seventh success in 15 starts, but his

first success beyond Listed level. He tracked the leader (Redzel) on the far

side, went to the front nearing the 100m and then fought back to win well.

Redzel went to the front on the near side and ran along at a good tempo. He

was headed at the 100m and then fought on well for second, beaten a length,

at his first run since October. Loving Gaby settled last of the four runners on

the near side, improved at the 400m and kept running on particularly well

for a very good third at her first run since November. The favourite Nature

Strip was taken to the near side by James McDonald and ran along in front

of that group of runners, travelling at a good tempo. But he was surprisingly

overtaken at the 100m and then battled on for (3.2 lengths) fourth in a

disappointing effort, resuming here after his brilliant victory in the VRC

Sprint Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) at this track in November. I Am Excited battled

on nicely for (3.5 lengths) fifth in a sound first-up run. [KB]

to the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and a clash with last week’s

impressive Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Two Illicit (Jimmy

with just under a circuit to run to sit a handy sixth until passing the 1400m.

Opie Bosson crept him forward at the 600m and rounding into the home

straight was perfectly poised to challenge. At the top of the straight he

went five wide, cruised alongside the leaders at the 300m, and went clear

to win by a length and a half for win three from four starts with plenty

in reserve. Scorpz was a handy fourth (one out) down the back straight,

third at the 600m, bumped just short of the straight but recovered. He

shared the lead at the top of the straight and looked a chance but was not

able to accelerate with the winner yet kept going quite well to the line

for second. Sherwood Forest was third (rails) at the 800m, moved out

upon straightening and co-led briefly then kept on gamely for third from

Tibetan, who from midfield finished fairly for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Lightweight Polzeath, enjoying some consistent recent form,

caused a surprise here, holding on doggedly for his fifth win and maiden

stakes success. He was a handy third (rails) with a lap to run then fourth

down the back and in a pocket from the 600m. Turning for home he

needed a run, found room one off the fence at the 300m and went after

the leader. He co-led at the 200m, led short of the line then just held on

from a flying late challenge. Platinum Invador was sixth last (fence) at

the 1000m, hugged the rail rounding into the straight, accelerated on

the inner to be handy enough at the 200m then found more over the last

100m, flying to almost catch the winner. Etah James sat a close up sixth

(rails) at the 800m, got off the fence at the 600m, went very wide, balanced

and kept up a strong run to grab third at the post. Masetto held a narrow

lead at the 800m, led them in and tried to slip clear but was caught then

fought well to the line for fourth. [LJ]

Then followed: Libertini (AUS), Emeralds (AUS), Electric Girl (AUS), Akari (AUS), Sangria (AUS), Darling Point (AUS), Missile Mantra (AUS) & Regimental Band (AUS), last.

Analysis: In a great result for Godolphin, their three Group 1-winning fillies

filled the placings, all resuming in this Group 2 event. The winner was Flit,

who was racing in blinkers for the first time, and she travelled strongly in third

place on the rails from her good barrier (1). She got through to challenge at the

300m, went to the front at the 100m and then drew away to score impressively

by almost two lengths. Lyre settled in sixth place on the rails, got along the inner

on turning for home and kept running on nicely for second. The Golden Slipper

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Kiamichi began brilliantly and went straight to

the front. She then travelled well and fought gamely when challenged in

the straight, just fading in the latter stages for third in a smart first-up effort.

Favourite Libertini was smartly away from her outside barrier (11) and after

being deep early on settled in sixth place, one off the rails. She improved from

the 300m and steadily made ground for (3.1 lengths) fourth, racing a bit below

her best resuming here on a soft 7 track. Emeralds settled back in seventh place

(and deep). She improved nearing the 600m and then kept running on well for

a very good (3.3 lengths) fifth in a promising first-up run. [KB]

Then followed: Verry Elleegant (NZ), Danzdanzdance (AUS), Life Less Ordinary (IRE), Hush Writer (JPN), Angel Of Truth (AUS), Come Play With Me (AUS) & Glenall (AUS), last.

Analysis: Alizee went one better after a slightly disappointing fresh-

up effort here two weeks back. From the inside barrier she soon found

fourth (rails) to sit just off the pace. From the 600m she edged closer to the

lead and into the straight was beautifully positioned to challenge. Hugh

Bowman waited until the 300m, sent her along the fence then accelerated

from 250m. She got the upper hand soon after and ran home well for a nice

win by a short-neck, her career tenth in 26 starts. Favourite Dreamforce

camped outside the pace all the way to the straight, went up to lead briefly,

was tackled by the winner at the 200m then fought hard to the line for a

solid second. Happy Clapper was fifth, one out from the 600m, in traffic

when they straightened, got out at the 250m then ran home strongly but

too late, and finished third. Verry Elleegant tracked the winner into the

straight, tried to quicken but didn’t get warm until the last 100m, finishing

quite well for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: The keenly-anticipated clash between top three-year-olds

Alligator Blood and Catalyst proved to be a stunning contest. Alligator

Blood went to the front as expected with his classy New Zealand rival

surprisingly at his girth after a smart beginning. Catalyst moved up to

challenge after turning for home and the pair then staged a head-and-

head duel down the Flemington straight with victory going to Alligator

Blood, who refused to accept defeat, scoring by a short-head with Catalyst

the gamest of seconds at his Australian debut. Chenier, who raced in third

spot on the rails, fought on very well for third, beaten just over a length,

with Soul Patch fighting on really well for (3.3 lengths) fourth. Dalasan

finished (3.8 lengths) fifth after travelling in that position before making a

short-lived bid at the home turn, while Yourdeel weakened to finish last

in the field of six. [KB]

Analysis: Former West Australian-trained gelding Special Reward took

his record to seven wins from 13 starts in scoring here, his first success at

stakes level. He began well from his good barrier (1) and settled in third

place before moving up on turning for home. He got to the front at the

100m and then dug deep when challenged to score a narrow but good

win. Cascadian settled in last place in the seven-runner field, moved up

(deep) at the 300m, challenged strongly on passing the 100m and then

battled on quite well for (long neck) second. Jungle Edge went to the front

as expected, set a good tempo and fought well under his top weight (59kg)

for third with another Victorian-trained runner Ashlor holding on for (1.5

lengths) fourth after being prominent most of the way. [KB]

Then followed: Fascino (NZ), Katalin (AUS), Parmie (AUS), Lunar Light (AUS), Swing And Boom (AUS), Feign (AUS) & Lady D’oro (AUS), last.

Analysis: The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained filly Bonvicini scored

a smart first-up win, her third win from six starts and her second at stakes level.

She was ridden patiently by Kerrin McEvoy and settled in second last place

in the ten-runner field before tracking up nearing the home turn. She went

deeper at the 400m and came with a solid finish to win quite comfortably at

the post. Pretty Brazen settled in sixth place, improved nicely on turning for

home, briefly looked the winner when she hit the front at the 100m but could

not hold off the late-closing winner to finish a sound second, resuming here.

Meuse raced in fourth place (one out and one back), moved up at the 300m

and then kept fighting on to take third. Fascino settled in eighth place, was

held up between runners at the home turn, got clear at the 200m and then ran

on for (1.9 lengths) fourth. Favourite Katalin missed the start and was a clear

last early on. She looked for a run closer to the rails on straightening before

easing widest of all at the 300m. She then came with a strong late effort for (2

lengths) fifth, looking unlucky. [KB]

another stakes-winnng graduate

CASINO PRINCESire of 100+ winners in last 3 seasons.

Analysis: Sweet Deal never gave her opponents any chance over the

closing stages for a big all-the-way win here, her career eighth and back-

to-back Group 3s. She went to the front from the outset but had to race

one out and didn’t find the rail until the 600m. Into the straight she kicked

clear, led by three at the 300m, 200m and 100m and was still away by two

and a quarter lengths at the line to win comfortably. Spiritual Pursuit

held the fence in second to the 600m, dropped in behind the lead turning

in and was left to do all the chasing to the line, running on well for second.

This was a nice effort from Pohutukawa, who was third last at the 600m,

took a long time to warm up then finished well between runners to claim

a fast-finishing third from Dawn Dawn, who also ran home strongly from

midfield between runners late for fourth. [LJ]

another stakes-winnng graduate

Analysis: Team Hawkes-trained colt Ole Kirk, whose dam is a sister to

Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), stamped his potential in taking out this Listed

race on debut. He settled nicely on the far side, just behind the leading

group, tracking a good tempo. Dwayne Dunn steered him through a gap

at the 300m to challenge at the 100m and he then finished a bit too well

to score a very good win. Nitrous raced just behind the leaders in about

fourth place before moving up to challenge the leader (Mildred) at the

300m. He then battled strongly for a good second. Consistent filly Mildred

shared the lead, got to the front at the 200m and then fought gamely under

her top weight (58kg) for third in another very honest performance. Amish

Boy was in about sixth place, close to the leading group on the far side. He

challenged at the 200m and then battled on well for (1.6 lengths) fourth

with his stablemate Toscanini catching the eye in making very good late

ground for (1.7 lengths) fifth. $1.1m yearling Pioneer River battled on

quite well on debut for (2.5 lengths) sixth. [KB]

another stakes-winnng graduate

Analysis: Progressive Anthony Freedman-trained filly Supreme Idea, who

showed promise in winning a Maiden (1112m) at Geelong on debut in

December, advanced to take this Listed race out in good style at her third race

start. She began well and soon drove through from her inside barrier (1) to

take the lead. She then travelled well, got a break at the 200m and then went

on to score a very good win. Gerald Ryan-trained colt Mission River settled

outside the leader and eventual winner and kept fighting well to hold second,

his second such placing in two starts to date. Favourite Dame Giselle began

well from her outside barrier (10) and settled in fourth place but deep. She

moved up on straightening, went to third at the 200m and kept fighting on to

hold that position, beaten two and half-lengths in a sound first-up run. Ticket

To Ride was fifth at the home turn and then battled on nicely for (4.5 lengths)

fourth at her third race start and her second run this preparation. [KB]

Analysis: From 12 starts, Flower Of War now has eight wins, a maiden stakes

win and three seconds, and is building a nice race career. She was a shade

slow but soon took up the pace, was passed approaching the 800m dropping

into the trail then went back to third at the 600m. Caught in a pocket starting

the run home she got a split at the 200m, drove through, switched to the inner

at the 100m then caught the leader short of the line to wear him down by a

long-head. Valour Road sat fourth, one out from the 600m, went forward

three wide rounding into the straight and took over at the 250m. He looked the

winner at the 150m but was not able to hold out Flower Of War’s challenge.

Floyd was last (rails) at the 600m, pulled widest at the top of the straight and

finished really well, but too late, for third. [LJ]

SEBRING’S FASTEST, MOST BRILLIANT SON AT STUD!

GREAT VALUE!

Analysis: An easy win here for the favourite Superstorm, having his sixth

start, who scored his second win and maiden stakes success. He was fourth

last (one out) when they settled and held his position past the 800m then

edged closer to the pace inside the 600m. Moving out four wide starting the

run home he went after the leader who had shot clear, cruised up to be almost

alongside at the 200m then breezed past and had the race well under control

by two lengths at the line. Naughty By Nature was fifth, one out from the

1000m, improved to fourth from the 600m and was handy enough when they

straightened. He co-lead briefly at the 150m but had no answer to the winner.

Wine Night was fifth (rails) turning in, hugged the fence from the top of the

straight and ran on without chance for third from Tuscan Queen, who from

last finished very well but much too late for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Back-to-back Guineas and three wins on the trot for Lightning

Jack who again finished too well here. He was slowly away and settled

second last, one out and dropped back to last at the 1200m. From the

800m he swept wide, continued a strong run and turning in was fourth

but wide. Out in the middle of the track he ranged alongside the leaders,

took over and was travelling well at the line by a half-neck but in control.

Poniard sat fifth (rails) at the 800m, moved out one track nearing the turn

in but needed a run. With space opening three deep he ran up to challenge

then co-led. He gave the winner a fight but relented late for a solid second.

Asathought was back on the fence at the 600m, moved forward to be

handier then hugged the rail the length of the straight, finishing well

but late for third. Sanctify made a promising run in the straight but was

caught at the line to run fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: Consistent Master Chum scored his maiden stakes success

and a hat-trick of wins in the process with a top effort here. He was

slow into stride to settle third last (rails) at the 1600m, maintained

his position past the 1000m but was shuffled back to last at the 600m.

Rounding into the home straight he waited, found room one out then

ran into traffic, squeezed through at the 200m, ranged up to co-lead

at the 100m and, travelling well, held on by a nose. Favourite Hasta

La War was last at the 1000m, made his run from the 600m and was

widest but one turning for home. He took some time to wind up but

kept on strongly to the line. Jackthegiantslayer sat fifth (rails) from the

600m but was shuffled back rounding into the straight. He had nowhere

to go until the 100m before flashing into third near the line from Dr

Dependable, who took over at the 300m, was caught at the 100m and

then held on for fourth. [LJ]

STEVEMORAN

DON’T MISS STEVE MORAN’S LATEST COLUMN - VIEWS, ANALYSES AND TIPS FROM ONE OF THE INDUSTRY’S LEADING VOICES EVERY WEDNESDAY.

STEVE MORAN

| 15 |

BY STEVE MORAN | @ANZ_NEWS

Spring’s major racing has highlighted

again that jockeys are arguably

the world’s greatest sportsmen

and women and, almost without

question, the most unique.

Regardless of age or gender; regardless of

background, reputation or accomplishments

they compete on equal terms. This even applies

to children (teenagers) if they happen to have

outridden their claim.

The world’s best travel from country to

country - probably with a business class airfare

- but without an appearance fee.

There is no other legitimate and physically

demanding sport where this happens. They risk

their lives daily.

They have greater balance and dexterity

than Kelly Slater and Valentino Rossi combined.

Greater fitness and upper body strength than

any other athlete according to several studies.

Greater courage is demanded of them

than in any other sport I can imagine. Not to

mention that split second decision making,

a component of most sports, is absolutely

exacerbated in race riding in terms not only of

winning but also survival.

This demands greater promotion and

celebration.

They come from extraordinarily diverse

backgrounds. Take this week at Flemington

alone.

Barend Vorster, here from South Africa via

Singapore, rides a winner on Oaks day. Young

South Australian Jake Toeroek scored on Derby

day - he’d not ridden a winner,

of any sort, in Melbourne until

January this year.

Meanwhile, Daryl “Digger”

McLellan, all but won the Oaks

on Never Listen on Thursday. On

Tuesday, he was punching them

around at Muswellbrook. The bush

reserves to first grade in two days is

unimaginable in any other arena.

There, at Muswellbrook,

he was locking horns with

61-year-old hall-of-famer Robert

Thompson who still more than

holds his own on any racecourse.

And while the usual suspects - Craig

Williams, Damien Oliver, Dwayne Dunn, Hugh

Bowman and Nash Rawiller - have largely

monopolised the Cup week winners (thus far)

- Billy Egan, Toeroek and Vorster along with an

Irishman and a handful of kiwis have been on

the board.

And on Cox Plate Day, 23-year-old Jamie

Kah had the better of 47-year-old Oliver who’s

been unstoppable since, in a Group 3 race

at the Valley while Linda Meech has also, as

always, been among the winners.

Meech has ridden more winners than any

other jockey in Victoria this season. She did

likewise, and by a fair way, last season.

Oliver may be nearing 50 but is riding

“better than ever” according to rival and

commentator Corey Brown.

Glen Boss is 50 and, in recent weeks, has

ridden the winners of two races worth $14

million and $7.5 million. No pressure.

They are quite remarkable these jockeys

coping with pressure and expectation and fear

of failure. The unheralded Declan Bates I’m

sure overcame elements of all of that to win

the Group 1 Rupert Clarke on Begood Toya

Mother.

Perhaps they learn to cope from an early

age. Michelle Payne rode her first winner at 15.

She was literally a little girl. I wondered then

at the almost surreal absurdity of wizened old

punters trusting their money to her. Little did

they know she’d win the Cup.

Now the jockeys have one more thing

to cope with - the vitriol of social media as

Michael Walker, for whom I feel sorry, certainly

discovered this week.

Across the board, the only solution is to

turn off these often insidious platforms.

In Walker’s specific case, the solution may

be to ban the whip. It’s inevitable. And the

reality is that jockeys, here and around the

world, are so good they will adapt.

followed up his Caulfield Cup win with another

first class performance. While Il Paradiso

was thwarted by a lack room late he was,

like Surprise Baby and Mer De Glace, also

disadvantaged by a slow pace with the first 1600

metres covered in a pedestrian 1.44.5.

Il Paradiso and Surprise Baby, for the

record, were the only two horses to break 34

seconds for the last 600 metres and, if you trust

the official data, the latter covered 3355 metres,

90 metres more than the winner.

The Europeans will continue to make a

strong challenge for the Cup as indeed will

the Japanese, you’d think, after this spring’s

performances of Mer De Glace and Lys

Gracieux (Heart’s Cry).

And could we face the prospect, in years

to come, of Japanese bred sons or daughters of

Declaration Of War, who also sired the Derby

winner Warning, raiding the Cup?

Declaration of War (War Front–Tempo

West, by Rahy) is now standing at Japan

Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association’s Shizunai

Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido.

At the risk of being a “smarty pants” it was

the central muse of this column last that there’s

a massive “what if” should Warning and Vow

And Declare win at Flemington.

“Declaration Of War never really captured

Australian breeders at the time,” Coolmore’s

Tom Moore told ANZ Bloodstock News last

week in reference to the horse standing just two

seasons in Australia. I now wonder if there’ll be

any moves afoot to get him back.

Needless to say I was on Surprise Baby

yesterday and I remain convinced he is

freakishly good but that didn’t help my bank

balance even though I mused I wasn’t “giving

up on the notion of a seemingly unlikely “local”

victory, most likely via Surprise Baby or Vow

And Declare in an incredibly even Cup.”

In the end, luck will play its part in such

a keenly contested race and full credit to

Craig Williams for his superbly enterprising

ride and to trainer O’Brien for adopting an

unconventional program more akin to those

employed by the Europeans.

It was the closest finish since 1999 when

Rogan Josh won and just 1.3 lengths separated

the first six.

Frankie Dettori rode the runner-up Central

Park that year. He finished in the same spot

yesterday aboard Master Of Reality but was

relegated to fourth after a stewards protest. I

suspect there’s every chance Il Paradiso would

have won had Dettori held his line.

Dettori was duly suspended for careless

riding. He was famously suspended for a month

and fined $20,000 for careless riding, aboard

Max Dynamite in the 2015 Melbourne Cup,

which saw several other runners have their

chances diminished.

Corey Brown, the dual Melbourne Cup

winning jockey, incidentally rode the third

placegetter in that 1999 Cup. This year, he’s

been commenting on television and his

contributions have been the broadcasting

highlight of the spring. His and occasional

cameos from Johnny Murtagh.

The on-track highlights yesterday, aside

from the Cup, came from the winners Aryaaf

(Epaulette) and Shared Ambition (Born To

Sea); the beaten Xilong (Deep Field) who just

might be a star and, of course, the riding of

Nash Rawiller.

A WAY TO READ STEVE MORAN

BY STEVE MORAN | @STEVEM_MORAN

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off a remarkable training feat by managing to rejuvenate the once retired Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three years on from his first victory in the Caulfield feature. Western Australian Smith took over the Warrnambool stables once owned by Black Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career. Smith conceded that he was not overly confident that Black Heart Bart would make it back to the races until an encouraging Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month."Before he trialled I started to doubt, but then he trialled well," Smith said."His first race was good and then his second run was plain, but we thought getting him up to the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't be chasing all the time."It's a good result." MORNING BRIEFING

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking despite being last and a long way off the leader Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic," Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his first trip away and this was his first time racing the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I think it's important if I can just keep him in his right grade I can keep him progressing along. We won't aim too high I don't think at this stage. And I think if we come back this time next year we're going to have a bona fide Group 1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

It was, unquestionably, a wonderful result

for Australasia in the 2019 Melbourne

Cup which produced the tightest finish

in 20 years.

However, it may be premature to declare

that it signals a return to continuing local

celebrations in the years to come on the first

Tuesday in November.

Less than one length separated the first five

to finish - from the winner Vow And Declare -

the Australian bred son of Declaration Of War

(War Front) - trained by Danny O’Brien to the

Paul Preusker trained Surprise Baby, the New

Zealand bred by Shocking (Street Cry) whose

career has been moulded in Australia.

The winner’s performance and that of

Surprise Baby, arguably the very best effort in a

very slowly run race, may be seen as portents of

a local resurrection.

While I’m sure that Vow And Declare and

Surprise Bay, veterans of just 13 and 11 starts

respectively, will remain forces in Australian

racing and that there are positive pointers

from the three-year-old stock of local stallions;

the argument against any wholesale local

rejuvenation in the Cup comes from the fact

that northern hemisphere bred runners filled

the other top seven placings in a race which had

just 2.1 lengths seperate the first nine.

The northern hemisphere bred three-year-

old Il Paradisio (Galileo) was arguably unlucky

not to have won and thereby produce a third

straight win for overseas bred and trained

horses of that age.

Lloyd Williams almost struck again with an

import, Master Of Reality (Frankel) which has

become a recurring theme. Prince Of Arran

(Shirocco) ran extremely well as he continues

to imitate/emulate the grand Red Cadeaux.

Japan’s Mer De Glace (Rulership) also
