Governance and civil society

The idea of “Good Governance” provides for the

opening of a broader debate about the role of

voluntary organizations in politics, including the rise of

networks that allow for decision-making by negotiation.

What’s the point of raking leaves?

Presentasjonens tittel 02.10.2015

Here were citizens reaffirming a small measure of control of their shared physical surroundings, and demonstrating a sense of community, which is part of what cities are about – or should be.

— Meet with responsible elected official at highest level in city government.

— Form local alliances

— Participate at open meetings.

Challenges for activists

— Know the steps in decision-making: Always too late?

— Gain transparency

— Speak the language of decision makers

Presentasjonens tittel 02.10.2015

What can be done by citizens to win

influence?

— Initiate co-production

— Seek publicity

— Secure timeliness

— Persist

— Accept incrementalism: One small step at a time

The future

The future of the cities, whatever form it takes, will

depend on the goodwill of its citizens for its well-being.

Questions for discussion

— What are the qualities required for cooperation between civil society and government? Discuss in relation to trust, openness, timeliness, decision-making process, and other requirements that you think are important.

— What would be effective meeting places for government officials and civil society people for discussing issues of common concern? What should be the role of one-way communication? What should be the role of multi-way communication?
