fter reading out the longest Budget speech till date in the history of Rajasthan Assembly, Chief Minister Ashok Ge-hlot is expected to be at his oratory best on Thursday, when the leader of the House will present his reply to the Opposi-tion’s attacks on the budget announcements. Known for be-ing a master of ‘to-the-point-sarcastic-remarks’, Gehlot will ensure that his message goes out clearly to the Opposition and the general public. The message being that he will make sure all of his announcements see fruition on ground and that the government is ‘Kaamyaab’ (successful) in imple-menting and completing the announcements, on time.

Knowing Gehlot to be the ‘Jadugar’ with words, his reply can be expected to be replete with puns (intended) and car-rying the exact information that will keep the Opposition mum and ‘his team’ in high spirits. It will also be the time for point-to-point answering the Opposition on its charges on the alleged ‘lacunae’ in the Budget, made over the course of arguments in the House these past weeks and how the state government will ford over the claimed ‘pit-falls’ of the budget.

With an experience of thirteen years in heading and managing the state’s finances and treasury, and an even bigger experience in floor management, expect Gehlot to be the firebrand yet jovial leader, who would dine out on the Opposition’s remarks, making them look blank and even ill-prepared while taking on the ‘behemoth’ that is Gehlot!

Amidst all this, Team Gehlot—Niranjan Arya, Kuldeep Ranka and Akhil Arora—must be equally keen and curious to watch the reply of their charismatic leader Ashok Gehlot in the House!

SEX, PORN DRIVE

POLITICS IN KARNATAKA

sex-for-job scandal has rocked the Karnataka government. The con-troversy erupted on Tuesday over a video CD in which Water Re-sources Minister Ramesh Jarki-

holi is shown getting intimate with an uni-dentified woman. A complaint filed against him alleges that the woman was lured with a job offer. Jarkiholi resigned “on moral grounds” after the opposition parties began baying for his blood but claimed the allega-tions to be untrue. Jarkiholi was earlier with the Congress but crossed over to the BJP along with other MLAs in 2019. He was in-strumental in the fall of the JDS-Congress government of HD Kumaraswamy.

This is not the first time that Karnataka leaders have been involved in inappropriate conduct. One can draw this inference going by the frequency with which the state’s legis-lators across party lines have been grabbing headlines. An alleged forgery case is pending against Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa (BSY). In January 2021 the Supreme Court stayed his arrest with the observation, “You are a sitting Chief Minister. Who can issue an arrest warrant against you?” In 2011 also Yediyurappa faced serious charges of corrup-tion in a mining scam which forced him to resign. He was later acquitted and went on to regain the CM’s office. Apart from BSY, the Reddy brothers of Bellary, who allegedly plundered India’s natural wealth in Rs 16,500 crore, also got away scot free. There were al-legations that they were set free as the BJP needed them to win elections. Reddy brothers were said to be close to BSY. The chief min-ister’s image remains tarnished. What is im-portant is that BSY and the Reddy brothers are match winners for the BJP.

When BSY chose party leader Laxman Sa-vadi for the post of deputy chief minister in 2019, he was neither a member of the state As-sembly nor of the Legislative Council. His one claim to fame was a porn clip he was caught watching on his mobile phone in the Assembly when the House was in session. Savadi was then a minister and was watching the risqué video along with another minister C.C. Patil. Both had to resign after newspapers reported the incident. In his defence Savadi said that he was “watching the footage to prepare for a dis-cussion on the ill-effects of a rave party”.

In January a Congress member of the Leg-islative Council, Prakash Rathod, was also caught watching a porn clip on his mobile phone when the House was in session. Rathod argued that he was deleting messages from his phone, although photographs showed him watching the video.

It is not that some politicians in other states don’t indulge in risqué behaviour but watching porn clips in the Assembly or Coun-cil is rare but not unheard of.

IN-DEPTH

A

eading aloud is an activity that we associate with the cosy comfort of chil-

dren’s bedtime stories. Cer-tainly, children’s classics from The Gruffalo to the Alice books are produced knowing that when they come to be read, the chanc-es are that an older person will be reading them aloud to a younger one.

The extensive benefits of reading aloud to children are well documented. Re-searchers have found that toddlers who are read to be-come children who are “more likely to enjoy strong relationships, sharper focus, and greater emotional resil-ience and self-mastery”.

Unsurprisingly, then, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading aloud to children. It is even used by sociolo-gists as one of the most im-

portant indicators of life prospects.

But if reading aloud is so good for us, why has it be-come primarily the pre-serve of childhood?

HOW SILENT READING TOOK OVER

Of course, it was not al-ways this way. As Meghan Cox Gurdon, the Wall Street Journal’s Children’s book critic, points out, since the advent of the written word until the 10th century, “to read at all was to read aloud”.

Even after silent reading became more common, it co-existed with what Eng-lish Literature professor Abigail Williams refers to as “communal” and “so-cial” forms of reading well into the 19th century. Only when the voices of mass media entered the home through radio and TV sets did reading as a shared

public activity between consenting adults specifi-cally start to wane.

But as books themselves reveal, reading aloud could be more than merely socia-ble. It can be deeply seduc-tive, forging intimate as well as communal bonds.

Azar Nafisi’s memoir

about life as a woman and as a literature teacher in post-revolutionary Iran, Reading Lolita in Tehran (2003), features students Manna and Nima, who “had fallen in love in large part because of their common interest in literature”. If a love of literature draws this

couple together, it is read-ing it aloud that cements their relationship. The words they read aloud con-jure a safe space from the difficulties of their word.

Likewise, in Mansfield Park (1814), Jane Austen uses reading aloud as a highly charged turning

point in the relationship between protagonist Fan-ny Price and her recently declared suitor, Henry Crawford. When Henry reads aloud to the gathered assembly, his skill and sen-sitivity is such that Fanny is forced to sit up and listen despite herself.

Her needlework, upon which she determinedly focuses all her attention at first, eventually drops into her lap “and at last … the eyes which had appeared so studiously to avoid him throughout the day were turned and fixed on Craw-ford, fixed on him for min-utes, fixed on him in short till the attraction drew Crawford’s upon her, and the book was closed, and the charm was broken.”

This insistent repetition makes for fairly steamy stuff in the Regency draw-ing room.

f you have a habit of ventur-ing into something only af-ter trying and testing it in several aspects, then it’s bet-ter you do not enter into business. Caution is impor-tant but many a times un-wanted fear or negative im-agination stops you from doing something new or in-novative. When you are working in a company or do-ing a business, there are many decisions you have to take applying logic and out of your own experiences.

Many times, your mind is flooded with negative thoughts. Mind is surrounded by unnec-essary anxieties. Even if things are moving smoothly in your business, your mind suspects a looming danger. Human mind is incomprehensible. It is con-tinuously swirling with thoughts. According to a sur-vey, only 2 per cent of people can live in the present. Rest of the population is consumed with thoughts of the future and thinking and worrying about untoward occurrences. Many people are lost thinking about the past and engage their minds thinking about good and bad occurrences of the past.

There was an officer who would get scary shivers just at the mere ringing of the phone. He would be preoccu-pied with fearful thoughts like thinking that the MD would call any moment now or there would be some un-pleasant news delivered any moment. Such individuals pass their entire lives worth-lessly waiting for such un-pleasantness and thinking negatively all the time. If the phone extension has the driver calling, just the buzz puts them in a fearful mode and they receive the call fear struck. Such people pass their lives living with fear of failure or living in unwant-ed fear.

The question that arises here is that what is this fear of fail-ure? It can be defined as the

mental fragility of humans. People, who possess a negative nature, get engulfed in the fear of failure very easily. People who are not mentally stable and people who do not possess positive thoughts, such people always fear that at any moment something untoward will occur and they perpetually live in this fear. Many top executives are also consumed worrying and thinking about maintain-ing their positions and keeping control over their juniors along with prevalence of favorable situations at all given times. Because of such anxiety, not only do they remain mentally strained, but they also spread negativity in the company’s en-vironment as well.

Let’s take a reference of an interesting instance here. It’s about a remarkable ex-ample of the industry giant, JRD Tata. When he would engage in discussions with the top management of TATA Company, he would al-ways talk about the art of positive thinking. He always says, Keeping self restraint, one has to create a positive environment. Leadership means to inspire people and to create a positive environ-ment. To maintain your leadership, you need to talk to fellow employees with a

compassionate attitude and create an environment of trust. For this, it is essential that your thoughts be pure and positive. According to JRD Tata, in all conditions of life, positivity is a prereq-uisite. Negative thoughts pollute your mental frame-work including the environ-ment surrounding you. It shakes your confidence and

fills you with unwanted fear.A business leader should

exuberate positive energy at all times. He would tell his leaders that always remember the com-pany runs because of its peo-ple. It is the prime responsibil-ity of leaders to see that each and every employee positively remains engrossed in their tasks. If the leaders themselves are feeble minded, then the company’s atmosphere would never be enthusiastic.

The gist of it all is that if you want to ward off the fear of failure, then you have to be strong minded.

Few tips for an employee/Business leader:z Remain positive at all times. In any given situation, look for the positive aspect first.z Always think about the ultimate goal of your life so that you get rid of everyday struggles.z Remain strong minded. Take decisions of the company rely-ing on your own experiences and logic. Not to be fearful at instances every now and then.z Stay away from negative news at the start of the day and to inspire people whole day long.z It is important for the business leader to remain joyful and to keep people happy.

Speaker registered his displeasure over neglect by some bureaucrats to the issues raised by legislators during sessionYogesh Sharma/ Naresh Sharma

Jaipur: The neglect on the part of bureau-crats and ministers in the House proceed-ings and their perpet-ual absence has not gone down well with Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Dr CP Joshi. On Wednesday, an im-mensely serious Joshi asked ministers and bureaucrats to sit in the House during Zero Hours and not talk among them-selves thereby dis-turbing the proceed-ings of the House.

Joshi has registered his displeasure over the neglect by bureau-crats of various depart-ments to the issues raised by legislators during session and is-sued a directive that

matters raised by the MLAs should be regis-tered and forwarded to the ministers of the concerned department.

Joshi gave these in-structions in relation to a question raised by Me-varam Jain, who during

the session said that in the last budget session he had raised an issue regarding sewerage in Barmer, however, UDH Minister Shanti Dhari-wal said that he did not receive any complaint in this matter.

Joshi said that if necessary, the legisla-tors should move out of the House only with permission from the Seat. He said said the dignity of the Legisla-tive Assembly should be maintained.

Jaipur: The matter re-lated to fee collection by private schools created furore in the House on Wednesday when BJP MLA Kalicharan Saraf raised the matter dur-ing Zero Hour. He claimed that private school operators are harassing parents by misinterpreting the or-ders of interim relief given by the SC and are pressurizing the par-ents to deposit the fees. The legislator demand-ed the govt to bring a bill or make laws to pro-vide relief to parents. 70 lakh parents of the state are worried about the matter, he said.

“The school directors

had approached the SC against the orders given by the Raj HC wherein

the Apex Court gave an interim relief & provid-ed that the school opera-

tors would be able to col-lect the fees in six in-stallments,” he said.

Jaipur: Congress MLA Bharat Singh cornered the state government over the issue of corrup-tion during the Ques-tion Hour. He asked what the compulsion of the state government was to appoint such of-ficers, who have a cor-rupt track record, as district collector and SP.

He said that the crime rate declined during the Corona pandemic but corruption cases did not decrease. The Speaker CP Joshi did not allow him to go beyond the question. Singh had asked a question about a police inspector who

was terminated from services last year. Parli-aentary affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal replied the govt has not reinstat-ed the officer in service.

BJP MLA Vitthal Shankar Awasthi said that Cong leaders have Modi phobia but Modi will return as PM for the third time, and for the next 30 years, Yogi is get-ting ready.

Jaipur: The RLP has announced to field candidates in the up-coming by-elections in 4 assembly seats in Rajasthan. Party chief and Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal also targeted the BJP national president JP Nadda’s visit to Jaipur. He said that the BJP is on the verge of breakdown in the state. Nadda has come here to han-dle it. Beniwal an-nounced to contest the by-elections in Sujangarh of Churu, Vallabh Nagar of Udaipur, Sahada of Bhilwara, and Rajsa-mand assembly seats.

Jaipur: MLA Rafiq Khan on Wednesday at-tacked BJP in the House

saying that Rs 45 per litre petrol crossed Rs 100 and Rs 400 cylin-der has

now gone up to Rs 825. PM Narendra Modi only does his ‘maan ki baat’ and not people’s ‘maan ki baat’, he said. This led to intense debate be-tween Khan and BJP MLA Ashok Lahoti. The debate was related to ra-tion distribution during the lockdown. Khan said ‘Hum ah bhi karte hain to ho jaate hain badnam, wo qatal bhi karte hain to charcha nahi hota’.

Jaipur: A detailed pro-ject report (DPR) for the proposed door-to-door piped water connection announced in the state budget for 2021-22 will be prepared before August 30, Public Health Engi-neering Minister BD Kalla said on Wednesday.

The state government is committed to provide fluoride-free drinking water to the people of

the state, Kalla said, re-plying to a question by BJP legislator Narayan Singh Deol.

After preparing the DPR of the project, ad-ministrative and finan-cial approval will be is-

sued on the basis of its actual cost and the imple-mentation of the project, he added. Replying to a supplementary question, the minister said Rs 20.98 crore compensation amount of a contractor has been withheld for negligence in providing fluoride-free drinking water in the Assembly constituencies of Bhin-mal and Raniwara. —PTI

Data from the third stage of trials - which measures the vaccine’s success in protecting against the coronavirus - has been widely antici-pated amid concerns over Covaxin’s safety and efficacy, particu-larly as mutated, and more infectious, strains of the virus are circu-lating in the world.

New Delhi: Amid at-tacks from the group of 23 dissenting Congress leaders, former party chief Rahul Gandhi said that he was criti-cised by his own party leaders after he pushed for Youth Congress and NSUI elections. Re-sponding to a question about Congress’ inter-nal democracy, Gandhi, who was attending a webinar organised by US University Cornell through video confer-ence, said he was the “first-person” to say that democratic elec-tion within the party is absolutely critical.

“I am the person who pushed elections in youth organisation and student organisation and got a serious beat-ing in the press for that. I was literally crucified for doing elections. I was attacked by my own party people. I am the first person that says democratic election within the party is ab-solutely critical but it is

important for the party to be democratic.

“But they ask about Congress because there is a reason. We are an ideological party and our ideology is the ide-ology of the Constitu-tion, so it is more im-portant for us to be democratic,” he said.

State govt sets fresh criteria for formation of new municipalitiesPer capita income and livelihood of residents have been included for the first timeAbhishek Srivastava

Jaipur: The State Gov-ernment has set the cri-teria for the formation of new municipalities in the state. Apart from population, for the first time other criteria has also been included.

Section 5 of the Old Municipal Act 1959 and Sections 3 and 5 of the existing Municipal Act 2009 provide for the set-ting of criteria for the formation of new mu-nicipalities and up gra-dation of municipali-ties. However, the crite-

ria for urbanisation, the necessary compo-nents, including popu-lation, were not set.

The State Govern-ment had constituted 17

new municipalities in the past few days. How-ever, a petition was filed in the HC against the formation of munici-palities wherein the

matter of setting up the municipality without setting the criteria was raised. The HC issued a stay order on the forma-tion of municipalities.

When HC stayed the process, the depart-ment ended the exist-ence of 17 new munici-palities formed by issu-ing notification.

Meanwhile, SC also ordered to set the crite-ria for the formation of a municipality accord-ing to the constitution in a case.

The local-self govern-ment department has recently issued a notifi-cation and the criteria for the formation of new bodies have been set under this notifica-tion.

Jaipur: Wildlife lov-ers have demanded proper assessment and monitoring of animals in Rajasthan saying despite in-crease in population, there is no arrange-ment for effective monitoring, which is taking a toll on wild-life.

The experts also in-sisted that the govern-ment should make ef-forts to ensure chee-tah’s reintroduction in Rajasthan apart from relocating Asi-atic lions. “These two steps can change the picture of the state,” the experts believe.

The state has many

wildlife sanctuaries, 3 national parks and ti-ger reserves, 2 Ram-sar sites and one gha-rial sanctuary, in spite of this, wildlife lovers are expecting to have cheetah relocation.

“It is the biggest need of the state’s wildlife at this time. Cheetah relocation in India is almost in final stage and several loca-

tions in different states are being con-sidered for it. Sher-garh Sanctuary and Mukundra Tiger Re-serve of Rajasthan are among the potential sites,” an expert said.

Kota: Ankur Padia, accused in the case of kidnapping mur-der of a 7-year-old boy Rudraksha in Kota for ransom, was given relief by a divi-sion bench of Justice Sabina and Justice Manoj Kumar Vyas in the Rajasthan High Court. While hearing the appeal petition of Pandia and other ac-

Jaipur: Former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, who had been keeping mum for the past several weeks, has suddenly taken on a aggressive role against the state government, a day after BJP nation-al president JP Nadda came to Jaipur and met all state party leaders.

On Wednesday, she opened a front against Gehlot government through three consecu-tive tweets, where she tried to corner admin-istration on self immo-lation of a mother in Jalore after police failed to act in a case of her daughter’s kid-napping.

“Disgusted by the

negligence of the police in the kidnapping of a minor daughter in Ram-sin police station area, Jalore, where the moth-er committed suicide. What kind of goondaraj

is there in the state, where the system itself protects crime and the victims also escape the demand for justice. Congress government should answer, when

will justice be done?,” she tweeted. In another tweet she said, “The promise was to give lakhs of jobs every year but (people were) cheat-ed. The main examina-

tion of AEN was con-ducted in December 2019, but the result has not been released even after 15 months. What kind of misrule does the Congress government have on the dreams of unemployed youth in the state?

Meanwhile, in a show of strength, Raje is all set to embark on a religious yatra on her birthday on March 8 and leaders who are considered close to her have been fully en-gaged in the prepara-tions and are mobiliz-ing people from villag-es for the yatra.

Former minister Yu-nus Khan is monitoring Raje’s ‘Dev Darshan’ yatra programme while ex-MLA Anita Singh is active at district level.

39 liquor shops fail to get allotted in 1st roundKashiram Choudhary

Jaipur: The opening response for online auc-tion of liquor shops was not much encouraging as 39 out of total 1669 shops could not be allot-ted in the first round held on Wednesday.

Also, there were sin-gle applications for 461 liquor shops.

The online auction will take place in five rounds till 10 March which started on Tues-

day. So far, more than 30,000 registrations have been done for the auction of 7665 liquor shops across the state.

However, on the first day, there were 500 shops for which either there was only one ap-plicant or there was no candidate.

39 shops could not be auctioned because there was not a single applicant for these shops. Now, a fresh date will be announced for

the auction of these 39 shops.

The response in Jaipur was compara-tively better than other

cities. On an average, 3 people applied for one shop in Jaipur.

There are a total of 404 liquor shops in Jaipur city and online auction of 81 shops was held today. The mini-mum reserve price of many of the shops in Jaipur is between Rs 1 to Rs 3 crores and there is high competition for these shops.

The state govern-ment has given a reve-nue target of Rs13,000

crore to the excise de-partment and to achieve this, the department has started several ef-forts.

This time, liquor shops are being allotted through online auction instead of the lottery system and the depart-ment has received around 30,000 applica-tions so far.

However, only about a quarter of these appli-cants have submitted the application fee.

Jaipur: A day after BJP National President JP Nadda visited Jaipur and took stock of the state unit’s workings, the Rajasthan Congress has quipped on Nadda’s visit. PCC Chief Govind Singh Dotasra claimed that Nadda had come to Jaipur to bridge the gap in the party, yet he could not do so.

“Nadda tried to show unity but their leaders are fighting among themselves. They are pushing each other around in order to get ahead. BJP is now di-vided in two factions,” he said. “An attempt was made to push each of them closer, but they failed. The BJP has split into pieces. Rajen-dra Rathore is frustrat-ed, Gulabchand Ka-taria is so dull. Vasund-hara Raje has been so aggressive. Satish Poo-nia has come into de-

fensive mode. Still their problems are ris-ing and they are unable to control the situa-tion,” he said.

After Dotasra’s state-ment, Poonia said, “BJP is united. There is no quarrel. The ru-mours about infighting in BJP are being ped-dled in a sponsored manner. The quarrel is in the Congress, but they feel that by blam-ing others, they will divert attention from their own quarrels. This is their illusion.

Ever since the Con-gress was thrown out of power at Centre, their leaders have been in pain and their pain does not seem to be ending anytime soon.”

Meanwhile, on the is-sue of serving food to Nadda and others dur-ing the national presi-dent’s Tuesday visit, Poonia said, “I was a worker, I am a worker and will be a worker. I am younger than many people in age and expe-rience. That is why I served food yesterday.”

WITH BRAINS

he perfect combination of ‘smarts and beauty’, Rajasthan based Shashi Bhati is proof that if you dare to dream big, work hard with dedication, then you can pave the way to your success.

Not only did she started her ca-reer at the age of 19, but she has also be-come an inspiration in her family and com-munity.

While talking about her inspiration, the model said, “I was inspired by Priyanka Chopra and her story. She started her ca-reer from scratch with a lot of criticism and no family background in the industry. Be-ing from a small town, I faced the same thing. When I shared my passion for avia-tion, my relatives suggested me to finish my studies and get married, but I had a very clear aim, for which I was ready to work hard.”

She added, “Being from a Rajasthani fam-ily, pursuing my passion wasn’t easy be-cause my family constantly forced me to-wards more “stable” careers such as bank-ing, IAS, RAS etc. I asked my family to give me a chance and I made it worth it by mak-ing them proud by becoming a successful air hostess and a model.”

Shashi holds a crown of miss beautiful eyes along with the top 8th rank at Elite Miss Rajasthan 2020. On being asked about her future goals, she said, “I want to become a successful model and actress so I can in-spire other girls to pursue their dreams.”

T

City First shares the journey of Shashi Bhati, who turned her dreams into reality with passion, motivation and dedication!

t is said that in In-dia, after every 100km, the lan-guage and culture changes. If that is true would it be in-sane to believe so

does the cuisine? Hold on to that thought!

It is very common to not know of veggies or fruits that are not regularly available in your region but are in the staple diet of another. One such vegeta-ble, that also gets mistaken as a fruit, is Wild Melon or Cucumis callosus/pubes-cent or Kachri. Kachri has many names depending on the region – in Gujarat and Rajasthan it is called Kachri, in Konkani lan-guage, it is known as Chib-din, in Maharashtra it is called as Shinde and in Ne-pal, it is known as Gurmi.

Kachri grows in rather hot and arid regions of the western part of India like Rajasthan. Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Bar-mer areas to be precise and are available from the

rainy season till October. It is said that when Ra-jasthan was dunes domi-nated the landscape, the Kachri vegetation amongst a few others were the only ones that survived the cli-mate and were the only source of greens.

Kachri growers say that it has traits of pest resist-ance and drought resist-ance, probably which is why growing Kachri is easier. Kachri has hairy stems, yellow flowers and triangular leaves. It resem-bles a miniature watermel-on but the taste would throw you off your game. It initially tastes bitter but becomes tangy with a hint of sweet when ripened.

Kachri is used as a veg-etable for everyday recipes in the western parts of In-dia, for chutney prepara-tion, as a souring ingredi-ent and even dried to make a powder that lasts longer. Kachri powder is used ex-tensively in rural Ra-jasthani cuisine, one may confuse it with ‘amchoor’ at first sight. Though both work the same with that mildly sweet tangy taste provider.

Kachri is also said to have medicinal proper-ties like soothing gas-trointestinal pains, having antioxidant properties and boosting immunity. It is known for be-ing rich in protein as well.

Dehydrated forms of Kachri are also used as souring agents in traditional dishes like Panchku-ta ki sabzi in Ra-jasthan. Here are a couple of recipes to make Kachri dishes:

KACHRI KI CHUTNEYThis delicious 5-minute chutney can save you a lot of trouble when trying to

impress guests. Take some Kachari melons (a handful should do the trick), an on-ion, some green

chillies and grind them into a mixture. Add some salt and red chilli powder to the mixture (give it an-

other whirl). Take ghee in a pan, heat it and

add the chutney, cook it for two

m i n u t e s and it

is ready to serve.

LASAN KACHRI KI CHUTNEYPeel and cut Kachri, add garlic cloves, dry red chil-lies, cumin, salt and curd, grind it well. Heat ghee in the pan and add cumin seeds then pour in the mixture, cook it for 3-4 minutes while stirring it continuously. We all love some garlic chutney, let’s

try this Kachri version for a twist.

KACHRI PHALI KI SABZITake beans and Kachri for this preparation. Boil the beans and strain them; cut the Kachri into small piec-es. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin, asafoetida, turmer-ic, chilli powder, coriander powder mix and add Kachri to it. Mix it for a while before adding the boiled beans and add salt to taste. You may choose to add some amchoor but do remember Kachri is sour in itself.

KACHRI FRIEDYou may choose to eat Kachri by just shallow fry-

ing it in ghee. Add some salt for taste. It tastes amazing with veg fried rice or khichdi. In Ra-jsthan, they eat it with ‘ba-jre ka kheechda.’

ALOO KACHRI KI SABZIHeat mustard oil in a wok, add cumin seeds, green chillies and onion, stir till light brown then add cube-sized potatoes. Mix until golden then add Kachri to the mixture and stir until everything turns golden. Add some turmeric, chilli powder, coriander powder, garlic (chopped finely) and salt as per your taste. Add lit-tle water and mix well un-til the spices are cooked properly. The delicious Dhaba style aloo-Kachri is ready to be served.

Note: Do remember to taste the Kachri before preparing to avoid any bitterness.

If you chance upon Kachri in the vegetable market, feel free to try the tangy and sweet melon out. Dip your toes in the age-long cuisine of Ra-jasthan with these easy to make recipes. And if you don’t find any green Kachri, you can always switch to Kachri powder instead of amchoor. It can be ordered online easily. The goodness of using Kachri in daily meals has many old tales in the Ra-jasthan region, why not try what grandma used to

say!
