Showstoppers: Lila Sutterby and Tess O’Connor were a hit when performing at Johnstone Court in Terang on Labour Day. 2022H

MUSIC reverberated through the arcade of the historic Johnstone Court earlier this week in a bid to increase the town’s artistic presence.

Tess O’Connor, 17, and Lila Sutterby, 16, took to the stage in a performance organised by Rusty Spanner Studio owner Chelsea Pope, who wanted to create an artistic environment for locals and travellers returning from the Port Fairy Folk Festival.

She said the performance proved a successful

trial run, and hopes to host more concerts in future.

“I think Johnstone Court is an awesome space, and I’d love to liven it up a bit and hold a few more events in the future,” Ms Pope said.

“This was a bit of a trial run and I feel like it went really well.

“I’d also like to help younger, local musicians to get a bit of exposure.”

The performance was originally intended to feature the duo of Tess and Melody Speed,

but due to a last minute change the younger Lila was thrust in to the limelight for her fi rst performance in front of a crowd.

“It was amazing and the girls defi nitely wantto come back again,” Ms Pope said.

“For Lila to come in last minute wasawesome. She did an amazing job.”

The performance drew a larger crowd than expected, but Ms Pope said nobody went without seating thanks to Terang Country Bakery and Crawley’s Middle Pub donating tables and chairs for all to enjoy.

MORTLAKE is set to play host to a country music festival which aims to shatter the negative stigma associated with mental health.

Ray Anderson’s Music Home-stead and the Let’s Talk Foundation will bring together a range of local country music acts for an eight-hour performance next weekend.

The performances will be inter-twined with presentations from Let’s Talk representatives throughout the day, aiming to create a greater awareness for mental health issues and the importance of seeking help when help is needed.

Music Homestead secretary Julie Stewart-Murray said all involved were proud to help promote such a worthy message.

“The main aim of the festival will be to promote Let’s Talk and to give people a voice to feel confi dent in talking about any mental health is-sues they might have,” she said.

“Let’s Talk presenters will be up on stage throughout the day to do some presentations, talk about their own mental health issues and encourage people to reach out if they have any concerns.”

There will be no admission fee to the event with musicians and those involved donating their time to

support the cause, however organ-isers are hoping patrons will provide a gold coin donation which will go to Let’s Talk.

“The idea behind running this fes-tival is if it can help to save just one life, then it has well and truly paid for itself,” Ms Stewart-Murray said.

“We’ve had lots of musicians dedicate their time to supporting the festival and Ray Anderson, who runs the Music Homestead, has put up a stage outside in the open.

“We’re hopeful it will be a nice, pleasant relaxing day for people to listen to some music, have a chat and have a sociable day.”

Let’s Talk Foundation co-founder

John Parkinson said it was hoped the festival setting could help to unite the community in a shared concern for the impacts of mental health is-sues.

“Our mission at Let’s Talk is to abolish the stigma associated with people who are suffering with men-tal illness so they are more likely to seek help, and to create more con-fi dence in the community to check in on their loved ones when they are concerned about their mental health,” he said.

“We’ve been very fortunate that the community has come on board with this themselves. It’s never been a government initiative or funded by

government, it’s purely a grassrootsinitiative which began back in 2006because of the fear in the communityon who would be next.

“That year, we lost 16 people by suicide that I am aware of.

“From our perspective, we contin-ue to push forward with numerous events to maintain awareness thatpeople shouldn’t hide.”

The festival starts Saturday, March 26 from 12noon to 8pm at 239 Mort-lake-Framlingham Road.

Avenue replanting set for WoorndooREPLANTING of the Woorndoo Avenue of Honour will begin in the coming months after councillors approved funding for the project.

Councillors approved a budget variation to re-allocate $30,000 of existing council funding towards the project at the Moyne Shire Ordinary Meeting of Council held last week.

Council will plant 48 Grevillea Robusta – commonly known as Silky Oaks – to replace the Monterey Cypress trees which were removed in 2021.

Silky Oaks were selected as the new species following community consultation and surveys in June 2021.

Moyne Shire mayor Ian Smith said it was great to be progressing the project and returning the avenue to its former glory.

“Heritage research showed the cypress trees were originally planted as an Avenue of Honour by returning service personnel from World War I. But they had been omitted from studies about avenues of honour and it wasn’t listed as one,’’ he said.

“It’s now recognised as an avenue of honour and I’m very pleased that we will be returning it to its former glory with a new tree species that is more suitable in terms on form, appearance, climate and maintenance.

“We’ll keep the community informed but it is likely planting will happen towards the middle of the year which has been suggested by arborists.”

Funding approved: Replanting of Woorndoo’s Avenue of Honour is set to begin in the coming months after Moyne Shire councillors approved funding for the project. 2021D

AN art exhibition which high-lights Terang as captured through the lens of photographer Christi-na de Water is set to open next month.

The compilation of images in display during the exhibition, titled “Postcards from Terang,” will fea-ture people, landscapes and all in between, in what the artist hopes will capture the spirit of Terang.

The exhibition will open from April 1 at the old Terang Courthouse.

Ms de Water originally developed a curiosity for Terang after hearing Commercial Hotel proprietor Les Cameron on ABC radio inviting artists impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to join the community as an artist in residence.

“At this stage in my career I was interested in teaching, but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit I system-atically lost all my photographic

work,” she said.“When I heard Les Cameron say-

ing artists had gone through a hard time and those who had lost work were welcome, I called him and came to Terang the next weekend.

“For two weeks it was pouring rain, and I just got up every day and went and took photos.”

Ms de Water said the hard work-ing, blue-collar aesthetic of Terang had captured her eye in a way met-ropolitan areas could not.

She made the decision to stay in town for an additional 12 months, seeing an opportunity to both grow as an artist and capture unique images.

“I have been photographing almost every day since, day and night,” she said.

“I decided to shoot Terang with no plan, no idea, just shooting every day.”

Capturing Terang in photography just as it is saw a story begin to for-mulate naturally, according to Ms de Water.

She wanted to capture the raw spirit of the town, using only the available natural lighting, through both its people and its landscape.

With the assistance of Terang’s Jo Kenna, Ms de Water set about famil-iarising herself with the people of Terang. The characters, their person-alities, and how their essence could be captured through the lens.

“I sort of wanted people who were in the background,” she said.

“I wanted the characters, the faces which looked the most spontaneous, and for me that was about making them real.

“The rawness was the truck driv-ers, the harvesting man and the kelpie breeder. The delivery driver at Greavesy’s who leaves for the

Melbourne markets in the early hours of Sunday morning. The milk-man, the postie, the newspaper guy.

“These activities don’t happen in bigger towns anymore and the im-mediate, personalised touch is gone. In Terang, everyone knows every-one else.”

Ms de Water jointed the Terang community with decades of experi-ence in photography after studying photography and visual arts in Mel-bourne, and was the fi rst woman to graduate with First Class Honours in 1973.

She had studied under prominent mentors Bruno Benini, Paul Cox and Athol Smith as well as being involved in the operation of a num-ber of galleries both nationally and internationally.

Despite establishing a lengthy career in photography, the 70-year-old said she feels her photographic aptitude has been further established

in Terang. “I came as an artist in residence,

which I have never done before, where all you focus on is your art,”Ms de Water said.

“I’d never worked seven days before. Every day I was just sofocused.”

Postcards from Terang will pre-miere at the old Terang Courthouse, 22 High Street, opposite the Com-mercial Hotel, on April 1 from 6pm.

From the opening through to April29, Ms de Water plans to open the exhibition from 10am-3pm.

Ms de Water said the exhibition, much like the photography, will be entirely a Terang affair with Coran-gamite Shire mayor Ruth Gstrein to open the exhibition and all food and wine locally sourced.

“The opening is a Terang affair, entirely put together with the sup-port of locals,” she said.

Unravelling the mount’s volcanic historyTHE Mount Noorat Management Com-mittee will host a special presentation next week to explore the rich volcanic history of the mount.

The evening will comprise a presentation from Dr Stephen Carey from Federation Uni-versity in Ballarat, followed by supper.

Mount Noorat Management Committee member Graham Arkinstall said the presen-tation would assist the committee to share its knowledge with the general public, allowing for a deeper understanding of the volcanic history of one of the most iconic landmarks in the region.

“The presentation is an opportunity to share the information the Mount Noorat Manage-ment Committee has been able to obtain through working with Dr Carey,” he said.

“The committee was keen to get up-to-date information about the geological history of the mount, and bring the information together as best we could.

“This is an opportunity to share that infor-mation with the broader community.”

Dr Carey’s innate knowledge of the science

made him the ideal candidate to lead the pre-sentation, according to Mr Arkinstall, allowing for an entertaining presentation which is not too information dense for geological laymen.

“The presentation is specifi cally on the vol-canic history of Mount Noorat, so we wanted an expert to bring it together and put it in a way that we could understand and learn from.

“While Mount Noorat was not his specifi c area of expertise, he certainly understood vol-canic processes and landforms.

“The presentation is very interesting, very informative and provides some great infor-mation on the site, how it has been created in different stages over time and how it fi ts in to the broader volcanic plains.”

The presentation is set for Tuesday, March 22 from 7-8pm at the Noorat Recreation Reserve.

For further information contact Graham Ar-kinstall on 0418 377 293.

NOORAT and Terang will once again bethe meeting place for Arundell descendantsfrom all over the country as they hold their family reunion this weekend.

The descendants come together every fi ve years to celebrate their Irish heritage and remember their ancestors and the challengesthey faced on the harsh and unforgiving landsof south west Victoria.

The Arundell name has been synonymous with south west Victoria since Patrick and Ellen Arundell arrived in Portland from Ireland in September 1855.

Patrick and Ellen’s youngest son John wasborn in 1860 in Crossley before the family moved to Laang in 1873. In 1888 John married Elizabeth Horan and over the next 21 years they purchased land in Ecklin, Glenormiston and McKinnon’s Bridge. They had 10 children and it is from these 10 Arundells the family have descended.

Reunion organiser Anne Bakker said she is expecting 150 people across the weekend with relatives travelling from as far as Ungarie in New South Wales, Adelaide and Canberra.

“It’s been a long time since the last reunion in 2015 as we were meant to meet again backin 2020, but like most things it was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

“So this weekend has some extra excitement about it.”

The weekend long event will kick off on theFriday night with a casual catch up at Crawley’sMiddle Hotel in Terang.

Saturday, as the main day, starts witha picnic lunch at the Noorat Recreation Reserve, followed by a casual dinner at the Mt Noorat Hotel.

On Sunday, March 22, the descendants willattend Mass at St Thomas’ Catholic Church in Terang before the Tony Arundell MemorialCemetery Tour.

The tour, which shows where a lot of the descendants have been laid to rest, in the past has been run by Terang resident Tony Arundell.Tony died in 2019, but his sons will run the tour this year in his honour.

The weekend ends with a barbecue at the Terang RSL Hall and the last chance for a catch up before everyone heads home.

MERCY Regional College is preparing to welcome the wider community for its annual Open Day later this month.

This year, the Open Day will be held in a new format showcasing the school ‘in action’ on Wednesday, March 23.

School principal Sharon Gillett said all classes will be running as normal on the day, giving prospective students and their families insight into what learning and life at Mercy Regional College looks like.

“There is no better way to discover what the college has to offer than by having a glimpse of students doing a science experiment, cooking meals, participating in a PE activity or problem-solving as a group,” she said.

“Our MRC classrooms are centres of engagement, creativity, curiosity, innovation, and enjoyment with students challenged and inspired to learn and grow, to improve and question.

“We are looking forward to sharing the vibe of learning at Mercy with our prospective students and families as they walk through the hallways and classrooms on a tour led by our students.”

Mrs Gillett said this year’s Open Day theme ‘Opening the Doors to Our Regional Community’ had been chosen to emphasise Mercy Regional College was “proudly and uniquely a regional school”.

“Co-educational and Catholic, we warmly welcome young people, families, and staff from across a broad geographic area inclusive of both the Corangamite and Moyne Shires,” she said.

“Everyone is genuinely welcomed at Mercy, and we have many support processes and services available should these be required.

“Care for our students and our regional community is at the heart of our Mercy Regional College. While we treasure our traditions and heritage, we are responsive to the dynamic nature of the world in which we live.

“We aim to create the environment, opportunities, support, and pathways for every individual student to fl ourish and thrive – academically, socially, spiritually, emotionally,

and physically.”The Open Day will be held at the McAuley

Camperdown campus, demonstrating school facilities and equipment in daily operation.

Mrs Gillett said prospective families are invited to attend either of the two Open Day sessions - at 9.15am and 4pm.

“They both will include campus tours and information sessions complemented with learning experiences and the opportunity to

speak with students and staff who will share the stories of their journey at Mercy,” she said.

“Please visit our website to fi nd out moreabout the Open Day and register to attend one of the sessions.

“We understand that choosing a school isone of the most important things you will do for your child’s learning and welcome all enquiries about enrolment at Mercy Regional College.”

THE third Eel Festival Art Auction next weekend will showcase nearly 30 high-quality, affordable artworks by 22 talented regional artists.

The auction, set for Friday March 25, will begin from 5pm at the Lake Bolac Memorial Hall.

“Funds from the auction benefi t both the art-ists and the future of the festival,” Eel Festival chair Rachel Taylor said.

The auction includes a dinner by indigenous caterers, the Murnong Mannmas, from Castlemaine.

Largely inspired by country, the artworks underscore the theme of this year’s festival, ‘Caring for Country, Caring for Culture’.

The biennial festival, delayed until this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, promotes respectful understanding of Aboriginal culture and environmental sustainability.

Among those with pieces available for auc-tion will be Dr Aunty Eileen Harrison, a re-spected Kurnai Elder (Gippsland region), who grew up at Bung Yarnda (Lake Tyers Mission).

Her paintings refl ect her deep connection to country, her ancestors, her family and theDreamtime.

Dr Aunty Eileen has created many works forcommunities, schools, government associa-tions and private collections.

She will also exhibit at the Gippsland Sale Gallery in June this year.

“I was inspired by watching my parents as a small child doing art,” Dr Aunty Eileen said.

“My father made artefacts and my mother painted small images on them such as kan-garoos, emus, possums and motifs, patterns and lines.”

The event is ticketed separately to the Satur-day festival program, with tickets available at eelfestival.org.au

A QUIRKY new campaign being rolled out by Wannon Water aims to highlight the importance of sewerage services.

Branch manager communications and engagement Garrath Darkin said the Big Brown Bin campaign was devised to “make the invisible visible”.

“We know from our engagement work that, when many customers think about Wannon Water, they naturally think ‘water’,” he said.

“We’re keen to educate them about the other side of our story because we all know that what goes in, must come out!”

The Big Brown Bin campaign focuses on the amount of sewage and wastewater that residential customers produce each week.

“We’ve estimated that the average family contributes 2,400 litres to the sewerage network on a weekly basis. This includes sewage from their toilets and wastewater from things like showers, baths, sinks and washing machines,” Mr Darkin said.

“To make it relatable, we’ve converted the fi gure to represent 80-litre rubbish bins, meaning the average family would produce 30 bins each week.

“Just imagine having to cart those out

onto your nature strip ready for their weekly collection.”

Mr Darkin said while the Big Brown Bin concept was just a bit of fun, the message was important.

“At Wannon Water, we’re more than just water. Our sewerage service helps protect public health and the environment and, as the campaign messaging states, we’re here to take a load off our customers’ minds,” he said.

The campaign began on Wannon Water’s social media last week with a series of three short videos.

BOOKAAR Cricket Club is the big winner in this season’s ‘Howzat’ cricket promotion.

Camperdown builder Murray Lucas won the Western District Newspapers competition on 1043 points, closely followed by The Farmhouse @ 153 on 995 points, with Nick Hose Fitness third on 980 points.

An avid supporter of Bookaar Cricket Club, Murray chose the club to be the recipient of the $500 prize.

Club president Eddie Lucas said the money would go towards clubrooms at Frederick Street.

“We are extremely grateful for this donation,” Eddie said.

“The money will go towards plans for new clubrooms.”

A COMBINED Cobden/Mortlake side won the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association (WDCA) under 15 grand fi nal against Merrivale on Saturday at the Walter oval, chasing down Merrivale’s 6/116 with six wickets to spare.

The Cobden/ Mortlake team was established last season in the WDCA’s under 13 division by Cobden’s Leigh Walsh and Mortlake’s Ian Mahncke to support young cricketers who were keen to take their game to the next level.

Including players from Cobden, Mortlake and Bookaar, the under 13s won their inaugural season in 2021, with many progressing on to under 15s.

Under 15 coach Leigh Walsh said he and Mahncke saw the potential in the young players and wanted to give them the opportunity to stretch themselves.

“Between me and Ian, we saw we had a fair few kids who were really keen on their cricket, and we thought we needed to give them a little more and take them up to a better standard,” Walsh said.

“So we joined up and put an under 13 team in the Warrnambool and Districts league, and it’s just gone on from there.

“Most of them have gone on to under 15s this year and we’ve developed another under

13s side as well.”Mahncke fi nished up his involvement

when his son moved on from the side, and Mortlake’s Shane Slater stepped up to coach the under 13s this year, taking them all the way to the grand fi nal in that age group as well.

The two sides train together weekly with Walsh and Slater in Mortlake, with the young cricketers also playing throughout the season for their home clubs.

“It’s a long season for them, doing both competitions, but they’re getting a lot of cricket and they enjoy it,” Walsh said.

“And then Mortlake beat Cobden in the under 16 grand fi nal this year as well, so lots of them were playing in that too.”

Walsh said the improvement of the youngsters was evident, especially over their second year in the WDCA competition.

“We’ve seen a big improvement, last year the kids had a lot of natural talent, but this year they’ve improved a lot,” he said.

“Playing against better cricketers, they see them perform and how they do it, and they want to do the same and perform at that level.

“They soon get a hold of it, they’ve done really well.”

TERANG Swimming Club conducted its season awards at its last training session last Thursday night.

After a season punctuated by interruptions due to COVID-19 and staffi ng issues at the Terang swimming pool, the club held a BBQ dinner and celebrated its athletes’ achievements and improvement throughout the summer.

Daniel Hyatt was awarded most consistent swimmer of the season and Imogen Barr was named most improved, while MacKenzie Dillon

received the coach’s award from coach Tori Parsons.

The club made special mention of sponsors Terang Co-op, thanking the local business for its support through a challenging period.

Now that the Terang pool has closed for the season the club hopes to hold its weekly training sessions for the children at a local heated pool and continue supporting the development of its swimmers.

LOCAL Cobden fi shing legend Darren (Wal) Wynd came up trumps the other day (or evening) in the whiting department.

Land-based fi shing at, I guess, his favourite spot down on the coast, Wal netted at least a dozen King George whiting off the beach measuring at 35 centimetres plus and due to running out of bait (I believe) he left them biting.

Now I haven’t spoken directly to Wal but I believe his favourite bait is squid strips or legs, for two reasons: it’s a hardy bait and survives pickers (for a while anyway); and it also attracts other, possibly larger species, so he is being prepared.

Wal favours the bait holder hook that is made from a more solid and thicker wire than your bog-standard whiting hooks, again, in case a larger fi sh turns up such as a gummy shark.

So be prepared just like Wal and cover most or all your bases, as its hurts when a decent fi sh is lost because of usage of underrated gear.

The long weekend’s weather was great, and I paid a visit on the Saturday to Lake Purrumbete to give the boat a decent run and hopefully catch a fi sh or two after being land-locked for so long.

The park was full of

holiday makers and the boat moorings and trailer parks were full, it was so good to see after all the COVID-19 restrictions in the past two years had curtailed our movements.

I got one good report from an angler from Melbourne down with his family and friends who also brought their boats.

This chap was downrigging to ten metres a variety of lures including Lofty’s Cobra-styled winged lures as well as minnow hard bodies.

Their boat was hanging out fi fty or so feet from the bank, and during the course of the day they caught a couple of good rainbows, one tiger

trout and several chinooks to two kilograms, but that bag of fi sh took the entire day and their catch was spread between three boaters.

So fi shing can be tough at this lake, even on a good day.

I did some jigging over on the north shore in eighteen metres depth this time using a metel paco spoon jig and managed a few reasonable redfi n with the help of dry burley dispersed at intervals while at anchor.

I found a huge school of fi sh on the bottom on my sounder but I may have hooked up and landed a fi sh only every ten or so minutes, which points to the school being, by and large, inactive.

This redfi n took a hard-bodied medium diving minnow lure in red on the troll at eight metres depth. 2022E

BRENTEN Farrer blitzed the fi eld to suc-cessfully defend his 360ci Sprintcars Victo-rian Championship at Heytesbury Stockfeeds Simpson Speedway last Saturday night spon-sored by Mainline DynaLog Dynamometers.

From position two the Bendigo driver led all but the opening two laps of the 30-lap A-Main and lapped half the fi eld with ease to defeat John Vogels and Chris Solomon.

Farrer’s evening began well when he set the fastest lap time of 13.084 seconds of the 42-car fi eld in time trials, following that effort with a fi rst and a fourth in his qualifying heats.

It was the fourth time Simpson Speedway has held this prestigious event and in a blue-print of last year, Farrer negotiated the tight bullring speedway easily with perfect race conditions that enabled drivers to pass on ei-ther the top or bottom of the track.

Farrer has not been out of the placings in this championship since 2017 and was ec-static with his efforts.

“I’m stoked,” Farrer said.“When I got the lead, I thought I’m not giv-

ing anyone a sniff. “I’m rapt to go back-to-back. It’s a big team

effort and I couldn’t be happier right now.” Polesitter and 2017 champion Jordyn

Charge began in style to lead the fi eld but would miss the placings and fi nish seventh while Vogels moved from fourth to second

early and 2012 winner Chris Solomon drove strongly to grab third after starting ninth.

Reigning national 360 champion Brett Mil-burn was fourth and Dayn Bentvelzen again showed his liking for the class fi nishing fi fth after winning the last chance B-Main and started 13th.

In the Junior Formula 500s it was again Tyler Maggs who showed the way to comfort-ably win the 15-lap feature from pole position.

Maggs led every lap and defeated Max Bevan, Zoe Pearce and Rusty Ponting to add another Simpson victory to his growing list of wins in a career that looks set to fl ourish in the coming years.

Brooke Buckingham held off regular sprint-car competitor Grant Stansfi eld to claim the 25-lap Formula 500 A-Main.

The pair staged a solid battle for race hon-ours throughout, but Buckingham eventually did enough to win from Stansfi eld.

A determined Jett Bell was third, followed by Terry Rankin and newly crowned state champion Jack Bell fi fth from the back of the 19-car fi eld.

The next race meeting at Heytesbury Stock-feeds Simpson Speedway will be on Saturday, March 26, with the Victorian Speedcar title, a round of the Modifi ed Productions, Formula 500 Stampede Series round and Junior For-mula 500s.

MORTLAKE Cats won through to their 11th grand fi nal appearance in 14 years when they defeated Bookaar at Camperdown Lakes Reserve last Saturday.

On a wicket made for batting Bookaar scored a competitive 195 runs, but it wasn’t enough for an imperious Mortlake top order, the Cats chasing down that total with eight wickets in hand in the 43rd over.

Bookaar got off to a strong start with an opening partnership of 58 runs between Eddie Lucas (26) and Simon Baker (47) and were at 2/79 at the mid-point of the innings when Fraser Lucas took the crease.

Lucas, who batted through till the last over of the Pelicans’ innings, made a solid 54 runs as he shepherded his fellow batsmen towards what was looking like a total of 220 or more, but a rash of late wickets from Neil Kelly (4/39) kept a lid on the run-rate through the tail end of the innings.

Mortlake openers Todd Lamont and Corey Rounds began patiently, waiting for the new ball to lose some of its shine, completing that task before Rounds fell for six runs off 33 deliveries in the 11th over.

Will Kain joined Lamont at the crease, bringing a controlled aggression to the game that lifted Mortlake’s run-rate, and the two set about chasing down the Bookaar total in earnest.

The pair amassed a partnership total of 93 runs before Kain (64) was dismissed for lbw at 2/121 with 31 overs remaining.

Isaac Wareham (40 n.o.) came in at second drop, and he and Lamont (70 n.o.) saw out the remainder of the innings in style, making nearly six runs an over to win the game with seven and a half overs to spare.

The win pits the Cats against Heytesbury Rebels in the grand fi nal next week, and Mortlake skipper Todd Robertson said his side were fi red up to face the side against whom his side won their last premiership in 2018.

“We’re very excited, we’re looking forward to the challenge Heytesbury are going to give us,” he said.

“We’ve made a lot of changes on and off the fi eld in those two or three years, so it’s a nice reward for effort to make it to this stage, and it’ll be even better if we can get across the line this week.

“Heytesbury are a really well-drilled side, they’re all on the same page, and they all play for one another,” he said.

“They’ll be a more than formidable opponent on the weekend, that’s for sure.”

Robertson said his side would need to perform at a high level in all aspects of the game to overcome the Rebels.

“There’s always room for improvement in our fi elding, we could probably scrub up a bit there,” he said.

“But key for us will be getting top order wickets, if we can get a breakthrough or two with the new ball early and manage to get out

Simon Harkness, that’ll go a long way towards us winning the game on Saturday.

“He’s the catalyst for their batting, and he’s had a terrifi c season, so he’ll be a big wicket for us.”

Robertson said the Mortlake batsmen were in good form and would need to continue that this weekend.

“As far as our batting goes, that played out quite well for us on the weekend,” he said.

“Our batsmen were terrifi c, Will Kain in

particular, and while Todd anchored the innings and we all bat around him, Will came in and took all the pressure off him with the aggressive way he batted.

“Credit’s got to go to Corey Rounds as well, he batted through the toughest overs of the day, he was there for his ten overs and wore the shine off the new ball.

“He did his role, all of then played their roles perfectly.”

FRIDAY will see the start of the much awaited 2022 Jumps Racing Season kick off with three jumps races scheduled at Terang.

The day will commence with a steeplechase followed by two hurdle races.

Terang Racing Club president Wayne Johnstone said the Terang and District Racing Club are staunch supporters of jumps racing.

“It was fantastic that our club has been selected to host the opener for the season,” he said.

“At this time of the year horses are preparing for the iconic Warrnambool May Carnival and looking for lead-in races to boost their fi tness and ratings.”

Mr Johnstone predicts the track will be in perfect condition for jumpers with the rain received earlier this week and said the club was looking forward to the day.

“Some of Victoria’s leading jumps trainers have horses entered with multiple entries from the Wilde, Maher, Musgrove and Durden stables

all vying for starts in the three races,” he said.Warrnambool trainer Symon Wilde will be

trying to get his up and coming steeplechaser Britanicus off to a winning start to the season when he starts as one of the fancied horses in theBill Roycroft Steeplechase.

Wilde said the seven-year-old gelding wasmaking the progression to the bigger fences after performing well in the Galleywood and Australian Hurdles last season.

Gates open at 11.30am with the fi rst race the Bill Roycroft Steeplechase scheduled for12.40pm.
