Founders’ Message

Graduations are a time of joy. Today, we are filled with immense joy as we send you our

warmest congratulations on your graduation. We are happy to share in the excitement of your

graduation as we join you, your families, relatives and friends in celebrating your wonderful

success. We are also proud of Riara University, its staff, parents and continuing students for

being part of the success story of this institution. This graduation is the culmination of your

hard work. We recognise that the journey was long and steep and you had to put in a lot of

effort. Your hard work has paid off, and we are immensely proud of your achievements today.

The successful are those that adapt and evolve continuosly

3

As you graduate, we hope that you will continue to embrace a strong work ethic and discipline

day in and day out in those things that will be important and worthwhile in life. Graduation

is not only a time to celebrate completion of your studies, but also a time to look forward

to what the future holds and how to make a positive contribution in society. The world

awaits all that you have to offer especially in helping to solve so many problems in our midst.

The world is facing issues such as corruption, food insecurity, COVID-19 pandemic, climate

change, poverty, pollution, terrorism and credit access, among others.

One of the reasons for achieving University education is to help in solving some of these

problems. We urge you to keep achieving, accomplishing, and above all, keep being the

person Riara University has molded you to be – diligent, kind and innovative.

In the challenges facing the world, there are opportunities for innovative thinkers, inventors,

policy makers, among others. Use the achievements that we are celebrating today to make

the world a better place for humanity. Do not give up on exploiting your talents, knowledge,

empathy and skills to help others. There is a place for each and every one of us when it comes

to finding solutions to societal problems. In this regard, some of you may be able to serve

that goal as entrepreneurs, farmers, environmental activists, economists, digital players,

journalists and so forth. You can play a part in agitating to preserve good agricultural land

and water resources, in campaigning against bad governance, campaigning against illegal

dumping and pollution, drafting appropriate policies that lead to the sustainable growth of

the economy and innovative solutions for your communities and nation.

We assure you that you have the skills to help you achieve that and much more. Don’t get

complacent, discover the trends and changes happening around you and especially within

your industry and where it is headed. Keep honing new skills to align yourselves with these

changing trends. The individuals who succeed are not necessarily those who graduate top of

their class, but those who are adaptable and able to continuously evolve.

We therefore urge you to go out and change the world, not because it is desirable, but

necessary and achievable. Live up to today’s theme “Adapt, Soar and Impact the World”.

With regard to the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, it is absolutely vital you provide a living

example of the new lifestyle order that will protect your family and nation.

Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

Be the difference the world desperately craves for

It is my pleasure to preside over this 5th Commencement Ceremony of Riara University. First, let me take this opportunity to pass my most sincere congratulations to the Class of 2021 for this great achievement. Indeed, this is a great milestone in your lives and I am truly proud of you.

Since the moment the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Kenya in March 2020, Education is one of the sectors that have been critically disrupted and pushed to innovate faster than ever before. The pandemic did indeed test the University’s preparedness in teaching and administration of examinations online but I am delighted to note that the University has done very well. In the same breath, I wish to heartily commend the gallant faculty, tutors, and support staff of Riara University for going way out of their comfort zone to walk this journey with you despite the very difficult circumstances. I would also like to

sincerely thank your parents, guardians and sponsors for the immense role they played in helping you graduate today. They supported you selflessly despite the immense challenges brought about by COVID-19.

As for you, our Class of 2021, we take pride in the fact that you showed tremendous commitment and determination even when confronted with the challenges of the pandemic, and you did not let the pandemic ruin your dreams. You soldiered on and managed to complete your studies under the difficult circumstances and it is the reason we are holding this second virtual graduation today.

What is even more important is that your ability to adapt following the disruptions occasioned by the pandemic shows that you are capable of thriving in the face of change. That is what should guide you even as you leave the University or continue to study with us. Times are changing rapidly and the world is evolving very fast even in the work spaces where you are moving to. The lessons learned are that you need to be resilient and adaptable to the changing situations as change is constant, and only those willing to adapt are able to fit in. You must, therefore, adjust to the new normal and strive to find your place in it.

I, therefore, encourage you to strive and live by today’s theme, ‘Adapt, Soar and impact the World’. The University has prepared you for this. The concept of a permanent job is increasingly becoming elusive. The world of employment is waiting for those not just interested in working in the sector they have been trained in, but those who can and will solve problems in that field. What difference can you make in that field?

The theme of your commencement, ‘Adapt, Soar and impact the World’ reminds you to adapt to the changing trends. With hard work and focus, you can soar high like an eagle. You have the skills to solve the problems that plague the world today. Indeed, you have the power to impact the world. Go out and BE the difference the world desperately craves for. I wish

you God’s blessings as you venture out into the next stage of your PURPOSE here on earth.

HONGERA CLASS OF 2021!

Never stop learning, growing and challenging yourself to be the best you can beOn behalf of the University Council, I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your graduation. We are truly proud of your achievement today. We recognise that it did not come easy. You had to put in a lot of hard work in your studies to achieve what we are celebrating today. Be reminded that nothing comes easy, the world of work will equally demand hard work, persistence, and consistence. I am confident, however, that the University has equipped you with the skills and attitudes that you will need to navigate through a rapidly changing work environment.

The University Council continues to support teaching and learning by ensuring the required resources are available. One of the most important recent investments, and which helped the University to respond accordingly to the challenges of COVID-19, is the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Investment in the Canvas system that allows online/blended learning became important when the traditional ways of teaching and learning were rendered useless. The LMS helped to deliver courses remotely through live virtual classrooms and dynamic e-learning materials, which gives students the flexibility to learn in the pace and style that works best for them. This was complemented by professional development of faculty, to help them shift from physical teaching to online pedagogy. I am certain that majority of you have been able to graduate because of these investments and I applaud you for not allowing the pandemic to dim your career aspirations.

Be assured that the Council will continue to ensure that the education given at Riara University is of the highest quality. In recognition that the pandemic may have altered the traditional ways of learning for good, we will continue to invest in the online teaching and learning methodologies and I urge you to tap into the capabilities of the LMS and continue learning with us even for short courses.

Finally, I am personally very happy to share in the excitement of your graduation, and to see you join the corporate world where we expect you to be the positive difference that we all wish to see in our society. Graduation is a bridge to the next part of your life, and everything that got you here – hard work, drive and confidence – will take you to the future that you deserve. We, the members of the University Council, encourage you that no matter what, never stop learning, exploring, growing and challenging yourself to be the best you can be. I know you can, and will, make the world a much better place for yourself, your loved ones, and future generations.

Congratulations Class of 2021!

Vice Chancellor’s Message

We count on you to be trailblazers of innovation Today marks a very important milestone for you, and the University, as we mark the 5th Commencement ceremony. Personally, I am filled with immense joy as I join you in this celebration, but I am also deeply saddened to see some of you leave for the world of work as well as for postgraduate studies out there. I am thrilled however that I know majority of you personally and I deeply treasure the moments we have created together, while appreciating that some of you are continuing with us for further studies at RU.

The contributions that my colleagues and I have made in your journey at RU have been our utmost delight and privilege and we can only pray that God opens many more wide doors for you as we count on you to be trailblazers of innovation wherever you go, whether as Captains of Industry, Diplomats, Advocates, Mediators, Managers, Content Developers, Entrepreneurs, News Anchors, IT Programmers, Artificial Intelligence Experts, you name it. We are truly proud of you, more so how you overcame COVID-19 challenges to complete your studies and graduate today.

As you graduate, I urge you to please join the Alumni Association and be actively involved. The benefits for joining the Alumni Association are many including remaining connected to your Alma Mater, accessing discounts for future courses and initiatives for lifelong learning, mentorship of those behind you, making career and business connections with fellow alumni, among others. Further, giving back is one of the most altruistic, noble acts of humanity that you will truly cherish even in old age. We therefore count on you to remain in active touch with your colleagues and your Alma Mater.

Finally, as you transition, I urge you to be ready to adapt constantly to the challenges that life throws at you. Create pathways where there are none, adapt where you cannot change, and reinvent yourself daily as new challenges will always be expected in the journey of life.

However, remain true to your inner values, embrace lifelong learning, invest in new skills especially on the digital/technology fronts, and always seek to leave the

world and every human being much better than before. Give yourself to worthy causes and recognise that adaptability and innovativeness will be key to your success out there.

I cannot state how much it has been my immense pleasure and privilege to know you and to have contributed together with my colleagues to your

success and empowerment, and I assure you that RU has been truly blessed that you have walked among our midst and we hope that you will come back over and over again. May you now make us truly proud by empowering other people out there, impacting society positively, and remaining a true

ambassador of your adoring Alma Mater.

Congratulations Class of 2021!
