CITTASLOW SANGJU RESIDENT WORKSHOP

Summary project

Cittaslow Sangju has showed excellence in planning and operating a project called ‘Cittaslow Sangju

Residents Workshop’ spontaneously from 2012 to 2015 that helps citizens deepen their understanding the

Cittaslow Movement and support the Cittaslow initiatives in the region.

Goal project

Result project

The project of intensive training programs like expert lectures and field trips was conducted intensively for

3-4 months every year from 2012 to 2015, and it was planned under the necessity for residents and

implemented by residents.

Each training course attracted average 40 citizens, and especially middle-aged citizens showed more active

interest and high attendance rate.

Lectures of experts from a variety of fields are to deepen citizens’ understanding on their role in

implementing the Cittaslow principles, and encourage them to actively participate in community activities.

The project aims to help citizens heighten their perception of the philosophies and purposes of Cittaslow, to

make them feel pride through in-depth education programs, and to encourage them to participate in the

community movement through using the concept of Cittaslow.

Field trips gave citizens who are participating an opportunity to experience the best practices of other towns

at home and in Japan, and helped them create ideas for Sangju.

Sangju’s citizens had opportunities to exchange opinions and produce ideas for the development of Sangju

through professional train programs of or discussions and forums.

Visits to towns with agricultural cooperatives, farm houses of the 6th

industrialization of agriculture, and the

community movements helped create ideas which are applicable to the Cittaslow concept for Sangju.

The project demonstrated the citizens recognized that their efforts and passion are the most important factor

for success in Sangju and they were motivated to participate more actively in the community movement.

The citizens implemented promotional activities like the publication of promotion materials, the operation of

some experience programs accompanied with masters of Sangju, and so on.

SUMMARY OF EXPERTS’ LECTURES BY THEMES FROM 2012 TO 2015

Dr. Hee-jung Jang, general director of the National Cittaslow Network and professor of Silla University

gave some lectures on the trends of the movement and the best cases of international Cittaslow member

towns to increase residents’ interest in and help them understand the Cittaslow.

Dr. dehyun sohn, coordinator of the National Cittaslow Network did some presentations on the importance

of resident’s role to encourage them to show their more active and spontaneous participation in the

movement.

Dr. Yuri Na, author of “Slow Life in Finland” and professor of Keimyung University in Corea gave a lecture

on the case of Finland’s slow life and suggested slow lifestyles for citizens in Sangju.

Dr. Ho-seob Yoon, green designer and professor of Visual Design, Kookmin University in Corea introduced

the ideas and cases of green design in the world that can be applied to Sangju, including designing recycled

items.

Ms. Gyeong-sook Choi, food expert gave a lecture on the recipes for healthy food using local ingredients in

Sangju and conducted a cooking class.

SUMMARY OF FIELD TRIPS FROM 2012 TO 2015

Wonju County in Gangwon-do Province: Participants visited ‘Wonju Sericulture Theme Park’ and

learned the development strategies of sericulture industry of Wonju to boost Sanju’s traditional sericulture.

Wonju County in Gangwon-do Province: Participants visited Wonju designated as one of the best

cooperative cities, and looked around some cooperatives for successful management of cooperative.

Imsil Cheese Village and Junggeum Village in Jeollabuk-do Province: Participants visited ‘Imsil Cheese

Village’ to learn local know-how for the production of high-quality of cheese by using local ingredients and

‘Junggeum Village’ to learn the practices of energy independence.

Sungmisan Village in Seoul: Participants visited ‘Sungmisan Village’, an urban village that is forging an

alternative model of twenty-first century living to learn their community practices for house, childcare, and

education.

Apple wine farmhouse in Cittaslow Yesan and Baekseok-Allme Agriculture Cooperative in Dangjin

County: Participants visited the best farmhouses of the 6th

industrialization of agriculture and learned the

strategies of combining agriculture and tourism.

The community movement of Japan: Participants visited some Japanese towns that are famous for the

local community movement, and learned their best practices; Shinano-machi (town)’s healing forest

therapy, Obuse-machi (town)’s agriculture, and Kusatsu-machi (town)’s hot spring to have ideas of

development strategies for Sangju.

Finance (costs and benefits)

While experts’ lectures cost a comparatively small budget and field trips were at citizens’ own expense, the

project had a much greater effect including more opportunities to experience and learn the best practices.

As the project was undertaken by citizens’ support fund, not the administration and citizens volunteered to

organize and implement the education program, they could develop their abilities and recognized the

importance of Cittaslow education programs for citizens.

Staff (staff involved and use of time)

Public officials of Sangju and the National Cittaslow Corea Network cooperated to help citizens organize the

education programs and support them in implementing the programs, to establish a platform to attract their

more active participation.

Additional information (if necessarily)

The citizens understand that the education project needs to continue and to be conducted periodically.

Since the project citizens and public officials have kept communicating with each other and exchanging

views and opinions to seek for the solutions to reproduce and extend the results of the projects.

If Cittaslow Sangju wins the Best Practices Contest, it is expected to encourage other Corean member towns

to organize and implement more aggressive Cittaslow activities, and to help improve prestige of Cittaslow

International.
