© FLUORINE-CONTAINING ELASTOMER AND ITS MOLDINGS. @ A novel fluorine-containing elastomer which has viny- lidene fluoride units, hexafluoropropylene units and, option- ally, tetrafluoroethylene units, and which has a fluorine con- tent of 63.5 to 71 wt %, a content of a fraction of not more than 50,000 in molecular weight (Ms) of up to 5 wt %, a fraction of not less than 1,000,000 in molecular weight of 10 to 35 wt %, and has an intrinsic viscosity (ml/g) of 100 to less than 250. This elastomer has extremely excellent compression set re- sistance and mechanical strength, and satisfactory work- ability in addition to excellent heat resistance and chemical resistance, and can provide excellent moldings such as rings, gaskets, seals, diaphragms, etc. by vulcanization.

An o b j e c t of t h e p r e s e n t i n v e n t i o n i s t o
p r o v i d e a f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g e l a s t o m e r h a v i n g
e x c e l l e n t p r o p e r t i e s w h i c h can be u s e d u n d e r
s t r i n g e n t c o n d i t i o n s , t h a t i s , a f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g
e l a s t o m e r w h i c h i s n o t o n l y e x c e l l e n t in c o m p r e s s i o n
s e t r e s i s t a n t p r o p e r t i e s and r e s i s t a n c e to c h e m i c a l s
and s o l v e n t s bu t a l s o h a s a w o r k a b i l i t y s u p e r i o r t o
or c o m p a r a b l e w i t h c o n v e n t i o n a l f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g
e l a s t o m e r s .
The p r e s e n t i n v e n t o r s h a v e made an e x t e n s i v e
and i n t e n s i v e r e s e a r c h a n d , as a r e s u l t , f o u n d
t h a t a f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g e l a s t o m e r can b e
i m p r o v e d w i t h r e s p e c t to i t s c o m p r e s s i o n s e t r e s i s -
t a n t p r o p e r t i e s and w o r k a b i l i t y by c o n t r o l l i n g t h e

c o n t e n t of low m o l e c u l a r w e i g h t c o m p o n e n t s to a
s p e c i f i c l e v e l and l o w e r i n g t h e c o n t e n t of h i g h
t n o l e c u l a r w e i g h t c o m p o n e n t s t o a l e v e l as low a s
p o s s i b l e . B a s e d on t h e s e f i n d i n g s , t h e p r e s e n t i n -
v e n t i o n h a s b e e n c o m p l e t e d .
A c c o r d i n g to t h e p r e s e n t i n v e n t i o n , t h e r e i s
p r o v i d e d a f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g e l a s t o m e r c o m p r i s i n g
v i n y l i d e n e f l u o r i d e u n i t s , h e x a f l u o r o p r o p y l e n e

The f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g e l a s t o m e r of t h e

The m o s t p r o m i n e n t c h a r a c t e r i s t i c f e a t u r e o f
t h e f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g e l a s t o m e r of t h e p r e s e n t
i n v e n t i o n r e s i d e s in t h a t i t h a s a s p e c i f i c
m o l e c u l a r w e i g h t d i s t r i b u t i o n . As e x p l a i n e d a b o v e ,
in g e n e r a l , i f t h e c o n t e n t of low m o l e c u l a r w e i g h t
c o m p o n e n t s in a f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g e l a s t o m e r i s
i n c r e a s e d , t he w o r k a b i l i t y b e c o m e s i m p r o v e d b u t t h e
m e c h a n i c a l p r o p e r t i e s i n c l u d i n g c o m p r e s s i o n s e t
r e s i s t a n t p r o p e r t i e s a r e l o w e r e d , w h e r e a s i f t h e
c o n t e n t of h i g h m o l e c u l a r w e i g h t c o m p o n e n t s i s

i n v e n t i o n , i t has u n e x p e c t e d l y b e e n f o u n d t h a t b y

In t h e p r e s e n t i n v e n t i o n , M5 i s 5 % by w e i g h t

t h e e l a s t o m e r . The s m a l l e r t h e M5, t h e m o r e
e x c e l l e n t t h e c o m p r e s s i o n s e t r e s i s t a n t p r o p e r t i e s
and , h e n c e , t h e r e i s no p a r t i c u l a r l o w e r l i m i t w i t h
r e s p e c t t o M5. H o w e v e r , f r o m t h e v i e w p o i n t of e a s e
in m a n u f a c t u r i n g , t h e l o w e r l i m i t i s p r e f e r a b l y
0 .4 % by w e i g h t . T h e r e f o r e , f r o m t h e v i e w p o i n t s o f
t h e d e s i r e d p r o p e r t i e s of t h e e l a s t o m e r and e a s e i n
m a n u f a c t u r i n g , M5 is in t h e r a n g e of 0.4 to 5 % b y

The f l u o r i n e c o n t e n t d e p e n d s s o l e l y on t h e VdF u n i t
c o n t e n t among t h e s e t h r e e t y p e s of m o n o m e r i c c o m p o -
n e n t s . T h a t i s , i f t h e VdF u n i t c o n t e n t i s
i n c r e a s e d , t h e f l u o r i n e c o n t e n t i s d e c r e a s e d , w h i l e
i f t h e VdF u n i t s c o n t e n t i s d e c r e a s e d , t h e f l u o r i n e
c o n t e n t i s i n c r e a s e d . The f l u o r i n e c o n t e n t o f
53.5 % by w e i g h t c o r r e s p o n d s to 75 % by w e i g h t ,

was 10.3 x 104 , Mw/Mn was 1 0 . 5 , M5 was 9.5 %, a n d
M100 was 27 .4 %.
T h i s f l u o r i n e - c o n t a i n i n g e l a s t o m e r w a s
s u b j e c t e d t o p o l y o l v u l c a n i z a t i o n u n d e r t h e s t a n d a r d
c o n d i t i o n s . The Mooney v i s c o s i t y of t h e v u l c a n i z a t e
