3HEXAGONAL POMPOUS VASE IN SHIBUICHIShibuichi bronze with inlay (takazogan) in silver, gold and copper. Japan, Meiji period

Elaborately designed showpiece consisting of six parts, namely, a three-footed base, base, collar, separate mouth which opens up extremely widely and handles. The alloy of this bronze is presumably shibuichi, meaning that copper was mixed with silver, thus creating a beautiful olive-brown color. On the base is a border of strung together c-forms and, on the foot, are fluttering leaves, bats and pairs of stylized magical creatures as well as a meander. Inside the curved borders of one of the vase’ large reserves is a bird amongst blossoms, while the other reserve features a dog sitting surrounded by grass. Also featured are variously stylized magical creatures, i.e. dragons.

On the open-work collar is a Japanese variant of the ancient Chinese taotie-monster. The wide, plate-like mouth has tendril-form, inlay decoration on the rounded lip with an engraved lotus on the inside. The handles are removable and depict a long-tailed phoenix, called ho-o in Japan. The inlays are made of silver, gold (or gilded metal) and copper and are flat, with the exception of the dog, bird and blossoms in the reserves, which are takazogan (raised inlay). Very beautiful, refined patina with polish. A rare, impressive peace.

23A ‘WINTER’ CLOISONNÉ PLATE, BY NAMIKAWA SOSUKE, SIGNED WATANABE SEITEIPolychrome enamels with cloisonné. Japan, Meiji period ca. 1880

Watanabe Shotei aka Watanabe Seitei (1851 in Edo – 1918) was a Nihonga painter and one of the first to visit Europe, attending the 1878 International Exhibition in Paris and being awarded a medal. His works have enjoyed great popularity in the West, and a large number are to be seen in both European and American collections. On his return from Europe, Seitei started to create designs for cloisonné, working closely with the accomplished cloisonné artist Namikawa Sosuke (1847–1910), this cooperation leading to further acclaim from abroad. Sosuke’s perhaps greatest achievement was his development of a technique called musen-shippo, also known as wireless enameling. This enabled him and Seitei exclusively to recreate brush painting on paper or silk in Cloisonné, a modus operandi completely unknown before and well visible on this plate, with the multicolored enamels in the snow-covered tree, and a little icicle dropping down like the picturesque stroke of a

brush. Today, some collectors regard the output of the short yet fruitful cooperation between Seitei an Sosuke as the pinnacle of Sosuke’s cloisonné work.

Technically speaking, this work is a combination of inlaid wire and musen-shippo, which marks the transition from one technique to the other. It can hence be dated to after 1879, because it must have been created shortly after Seitei’s return from Europe. The flat, four-lobed plate shows a brown sparrow, or suzume, sitting on the snow-covered branch of a pine tree on a light grey background. His wings are retracted as he is visibly freezing. The sparrow is a symbol of friendship and is also called ‘lucky sparrow’. Gilded rim, small bordure with very finely inlaid meander. Stylized cloisonné blossoms and many spirals on the black-grey underside.

64A KAKEMONO OF A MOUNTED SAMURAI WARRIOR Kakemono painting with colors on silk. Japan, late Edo period

A precisely painted, realistic work that offers a considerable amount of blood but also has a humorous side, thanks to a skillful mannerism. The battle is over, the samurai’s helmet on his back, his long tachi back in its sheath; both the warrior and his horse have been hit by several arrows, yet he is holding up his lance, with the severed head of an enemy on top, in victory. Three more heads are tied to the horse. They appear quite lively, one of them is screaming while the head on the lance has a fierce expression. The samurai’s unflinching yet satisfied

expression is a sight to see. The horse’s mane, tail and head with large blue eyes are excellently painted, its posture is dashingly directed forward. A discreet mounting lets the painting come into full effect. Ivory jikusaki.

Some are pleadingly raising their hands towards a floating figure in elegant courtly garments with fine, devout facial features and folded hands. Inscription
