Father Greeley, director of the Center for Study of American Pluralism at the National Opinion Research Center said the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has attempted to d iscredit findings in "Minority Studen- ts in Catholic Secondary Schools" with a memo he said, "was designed to question my report and integrity." Italian mountain village of Montella had probably never heardof Philadelphia. But that was before the Nov. 23,1980, earth-quake, which destroyed half of the town. Funds for assistancepoured in from Philadephia and other U.S. cities to aid the ap-proximately 350,000 southern Italians left homeless by thequake. Through the Philadelphia Project, a program of CatholicRelief Services, overseas aid agency of the U.S. Catholics, 52families will receive new homes and the entire town will get anew community center.

Still 5,000 Cubans in campsNEW ORLEANS (NC) - In an effort to "wind up this terrible

situation called the Cuban problem," John McCarthy, directorof the Migration and Refugee Services of the U.S. Catholic Con-ference met with diocesan resettlement directors. "We havesettled 70,000 Cuban refugees from the latest exodus, butthere are still 5,000 left," McCarthy said. He said that those leftin camps - after 10 months - will have difficulties. "We aretrying to solve the problem and we really only have two op-tions: either we keep them confined the rest of their lives or wecarefully fit them into our society," McCarthy said at theDiocesan Cuban Special Placement Workshop in New Orleans.

Pope rips into abortion issueVATICAN CITY (NC) - Abortion is

not a matter of private conscience orpersonal decision, Pope John Paul IIdeclared April 5.

At times shouting into themicrophone during his SundayAngelus talk, the pope sharply con-demned legalized abortion.

"In our age there is a growing threatto the value of life . . . If the citizenry isgranted a right to kill a human beingwhen it is still in its mother's womb,then by that very fact it is cast down apath with incalculable consequencesof a moral nature," he said to the100,000 people gathered in St. Peter'sSquare.

"If one is allowed to take away thelife of a human being when it is at itsweakest, totally dependent on themother, on the parents, on the ambitof human consciences, then one mur-ders not only an innocent person butconscienceitself," he said.

'THOSE WHO THINK and assert thatthis is a private problem and that it isnecessary in that case to defend thestrictly personal right of decision, donot think or speak the whole truth,"the pontiff commented. "The problemof responsibility for life conceived inthe womb of every mother is aneminently social problem.

"At the same time it is the problemof each and every person," he con-tinued. "It is at the basis of the moral

culture of every society. The Future ofmankind and society depend on it."

"IF we were to accept the right totake away the gift of life from a humanbeing not yet born, would we be ablethen to defend the right of a humanbeing to life in any other situation?Would we be able to halt the processof destruction of human consciences?"he said.

POPE JOHN PAUL made no directmention of Italy, but he was alluding tothe two abortion proposals facing Italianvoters in May 17 referendums.One proposal would remove most

restrictions still existing in Italy'scurrent abortion law, which allowsstate-paid abortions virtually ondemand to adult women during thefirst three months of pregnancy.

The other proposal, publicly backedby the Italian bishops and the pope,would halt all legal abortions exceptthose performed to save a mother'slife or prevent serious damage to herphysical health. The campaign to havea referendum on this proposal wasorganized by Italy's pro-lifemovement.

Twentyeight bishops of the regionissued a joint appeal, published in theApril 2 issue of the Vatican newspaper,L'Osservatore Romano, which toldCatholics that they were bound inconscience to vote "Yes" on the pro-

The Radical Party filed a formalcomplaint charging the Latium bishops

Cardinal Ugo Poletti, papal vicar forthe Diocese of Rome and president ofthe Latium Bishop's Conference,responded with a public statementcalling it "curious that the exercise offreedom of thought and speech in Italyis considered a crime."

Father Greeley, who said he isneither for nor against tuition taxcredits for parents of students in non-public schools, said if he were aCatholic school administrator hewould summon together members ofthe National Education Association,the education bureaucracy, the BlackCaucus and say:

'To hell with you - we've done it byourselves so far. If we have to close itwon't hurst us...the only ones to sufferwill be the inner city minorities. Don't

, blame us if the minorities suffer whenwe close down."

Father Greeley had similarly strongwords for private foundation, whichhe said have not supported parochialschools and "have been content withyour own pat answers and simple ex-planations."

THOSE SIMPLE explanations, accor-ding to Father Greeley, are based onthe assumption that minority studentsat Catholic secondary schools do bet-ter because they come from wealthy,educated families. The researcher saidhis findings show that "twice disad-vantaged" minority students - those

from economically and educationallydeprived backgrounds - make moregains in Catholic schools than in pubicschools.

"If there are common schools in theUnited States, they may well beCatholic," Father Greely said. "Whyare Catholic schools so good ateducating the black and Hispanicpoor?" Becasue they came intoexistence to educate poor Irish, Polishand Italian immigrants, a job they didwell, he said.

Father Greeley found that thepresence of religious orders make adifference in the schools.

David M. Breneman, senior felfow inEconomic Studies at the Brookings In-stitute, urged NCES to bring togetherquickly a broad representation ofpeople to reanalyze, criticize and sortout the report.

"There are possibilities for endlessingconfusing people," he said. "They (theNCES) have to recognize that they arenot dealing with just another socialscience report," Breneman said, scan-ning a crowded ballroom. 'This is amedia event."

Missioners not leftists,Salvador bishop says

WASHINGTON (NC) - Salvadoran Bishop Ar-turo Rivera Damas praised the pastoral work ofU.S. missionaries in El Salvador and. pleaded withU.S. immigration authorities to help Salvadoransseeking political asylum.

The bishop, apostolic administrator of SanSalvador, El Salvador, spoke at the National PressClub April 6 during a visit to Washington.

"The work of Maryknoll priests and nuns, andother American missionaries, is a praiseworthyexample of devoted sacrifice for the people," hesaid. .

THE BISHOP said he disagreed with publiccriticisms in the \ U.S. that Maryknoll Sister ItaFord, killed in December along with three otherwomen missionaries, favored the left.

There are 34 U.S! missionaries in El Salvador.They include diocesan priests, Maryknollers,Franciscans, Vincentians and Ursulines.

"U.S. missionaries take care of parishes anddischarge regular pastoral duties, but of coursethey place strong emphasis on social aid to thepoor since there is so much need now," BishopRivera said.For almost five years, El Salvador, a nation of 5

million, has undergone an undeclared civil war.Close to 100,000 people have been displaced,and 16,000 killed.

"I knew Ita Ford and I have no indication thatshe had become a political radical. From thepoint of view of the Gospel, she could have

voiced criticism of the behavior of governmentauthorities. But again, a church person has aprophetic mission to fulfill at the place where heor she works. Now, among the needy there arerelatives of leftists. This could have been onereason she was targeted and killed," the bishopsaid.

"I WANT TO REPEAT my plea that U.S.authorities lend understanding and humantreatment to the undocumented refugeesfleeing from violence in El Salvador," he said.

Human rights groups in the United Statesestimate the number at 30,000.

The bishop said about 4,000 refugees from ElSalvador have recently been deported from theUnited States and they face a certain death ifthey return to El Salvador under the current cir-cumstances.

The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Ser-vice announced in early April that if a Salvadoranillegally in the United States applies for politicalasylum, the INS will not enforce departureprocedures.

Bishop Rivera became apostolic administratorof El Salvador after the murder of Archbishop

Oscar Romero on March 24, 1980. He said hismain purpose in coming to Washington was "torenew the call made by Archbishop Romero andask President Ronald Reagan to stop sendingmilitary aid to El Salvador."

Latin bishops back poorSANTIAGO, Chile (NC) - Latin America's

bishops have restated their support for the poorand for human rights and pledged to promotedialogue on the controversial theology ofliberation.

The Latin American Bishop's Council (CELAMafter its Spanish initials) said in a statement at theend of its plenary assembly: "We reaffirm thevalidity of our commitment at Puebla of sidingwith the underprivileged in our countries and ofsharing their joys and sorrows."

People from all over South Florida —teachers, family counselors, priestsand parents - recently attended atwo-day seminar dealing with familyproblems, held at the St. Vincent dePaul Seminary in Boynton Beach.

They came to learn more about thePope's recent teachings on sexualityand marital intimacy, some recentstudies of Catholic families in America,and most of all to get practical ideasfor dealing with problems of the family.

Throughout the seminar the audien-ce became participants, as a livelygive-and-take with the four featuedspeakers took place. Focusing onvarious aspects of family life were Fr.Donald Conroy, a theologian andformer Family Life director at the U.S.Catholic Conference, Mrs. MaryDurkin, a housewife-turned-theologian from Chicago, BishopHector Rivera of Puerto Rico, and Dr.William McCready, a professor insociology and study director at theNationalOpinion Research Center.

WHILE EACH EXPERT dealt with a dif-ferent specialty, one common beliefseemed to unite everyone: The Chur-ch needs to concentrate more onfamily problems, and one of the bestways to do this is by forming smallparish groups, "communities of faith."

There needs to be more sharing ofideas, and the love and concern theChurch has for families needs to be ef-fectively communicated, from thePope through the bishops and priests,down to the parents and children whoneed it.

Mrs. Durkin, who spoke on the topic"Sexuality and Marital Intimacy," urged

the Church to foster local, community-level "support systems" — parish-sponsored programs to assist marriedcouples, young and old. She saw thisas a good way for the Church to regainsome of the credibility it has lost withmany of its people.

Fr. Conroy also spoke of teamministries in the parish that would not"dump on families just anothertheology" but encourage people toget together as "small Christian com-munities, people knowing people," tobring the Church's teachings and helpwhere they are needed.

He said that a new Canon Law is ex-pected next October, but without themeans to explain it and apply it in thehome, "who will even hear about it?"

While it has become fashionable toblame the Church's teachings on birthcontrol for the gap in Church - peoplecommunication, Bishop Rivera felt thatoften it was fear that prompted someCatholics to turn to contraception. Hesaid that by dealing with this feartoday, we'll be better prepared to copewith newthreats on the horizon, such asgenetic manipulation.Dr. McCREADY, whose work on

surveys of Catholic opinion has turnedup some interesting information,compared the family of today with itscounterpart of the past. "100 years agoa couple had no time alone after thelast kid left home. Some never left.Today they have upwards of 25 - 40years alone together. The human racehas never had to cope with thatbefore."

He predicted other changes in familylife caused by a changing society, andurged the Church to prepare for them.

have two equal wage earners. Thosewho take their careers seriously maynever have time to talk to each other.There will be competition within thefamily - who is doing the better job?When a man feels he is failing and hiswife is doing well, he feels vulnerable.This puts marriage in a precariousposition."

"With the aging of the Americanpopulation," McCready predicted, "by1985 two-thirds of people who startdrawing social secu ty will have atleast one parent also drawing socialsecu ty. Society has never had to dealwith a four-generation spread."

HE URGED the Church hierarchy tocommunicate new information aboutfamilies — good and bad — to thepeople, and not to fear of "killing themessenger for bringing the bad news".

He said that we have to pay attention

to data about people in their real livesand cited four major studies that hisorganization has been commissionedto do. "The Knights of Columbus wan-ted their survey to be done right -regardless of the findings. The otherthree were checked over carefully bytheir sponsors to make sure the fin-dings were "OK" before releasingthem."

In his final talk at the symposium; Fr.Conroy came back to the idea of for-ming small Christian groups. The earlyChurch, according to the apostle Paul,spread via the establishment of"households of faith" - 35 to 50people gathering in a home. The Bookof Acts tells or the first Gentile -Christian conversions, where the HolySpirit came upon Cornelius and hishoushold during one of thesedomestic gatherings.

Andagain the Lord reached out toher in a special way, He said,'My love for you is so great. Iwish you to serve me in aforeign land. Leave your home.Leave what you're familiar withand I will lead you to furtherservice.' And again, Anne freelygave of herself," Father LaCerrasaid. "And the blessings thatGod had brought us are im-measurable. Which of us in theArchdiocese of Miami are notricher because of Anne'spresence?" he asked the hun-dreds of priests, Religious,and laity in the congregation.

"Not too long ago," FatherLaCerra continued, "God called

Anne one more time when Hesaid, 'Your family at homeneeds you. And I want you,again to give of yourself. I wantyou to leave what you're com-fortable with. I want you toshow your love for me throughlove for your family.' Again,Anne gave of herself and shereturned home. She took careof her sister, took care of herchildren, served her family; didthis well and brought God'sconsolation and His peace. Andagain the Lord reached out toAnne and said, 'Anne, if s timeonce again. I love you in aspecial way. There is anotherfamily that needs you. A per-sonal family, and Archdicese.'And Ann left her family againfollowing the call of the Lord."

On April 1, Father LaCerraemphasized, God gave hismost difficult call to Anne, andshe said, " 'Yes Lord.' Again inher love, love met love. AndAnne is at peace. She has ser-ved the Lord and now the Lordis serving her, " Father LaCerrasaid.

ANOTHER MAJOR section of thestatement discusses the pros and consof various energy sources.

On conventional oil and natural gas,the statement acknowledges that thecountry cannot "wean itself overnight"from reliance on petroleum. Thus, ef-forts to find new oil and to force morecrude from old wells, "have clearvalue."

Nonetheless, the certainty that thesupply of oil is finite means productionof petroleum should not be overem-phasized. "Why pursue a policy thatguarantees the early exhaustion ofdomestic supplies, especially when oilhas certain uses (in the production ofPharmaceuticals, for instanced thatwould be very difficult to replace?" the

statement asks.Coal, the statement says, "could

become the key transitional fuel,bridging the gap between petroleumand renewable energy resources." Butcoal also has environmental im-plications, both for those who livenear and work in the mines and forpotential atmospheric changes whichcould affect climate worldwide.

Nuclear fission also is a complex anduncertain technology, "and both pro-and anti-nuclear advocates seemprone to exaggerated claims, creatingan atmosphere in which rational publicdiscussion is difficult," remarks thestatement.

While noting the argument thatfailure to develop nuclear powercould put the Unitd States at a disad-vantage in supplying energy to itspeople, the statement also warnsabout the "great evil" that can be doneby nuclear energy and says the defen-ders of nuclear power must "demon-strate its safety beyond a reasonabledoubt."

Later, the statement turns to solarpower and remarks that contrary tothe apprehension which greets mostenergy sources, "the general reactionto solar power is hope."

But it also remarks that since mostsolar technologies are in an earlystage of development, it is extremelydifficult to predict their potential orthe unforeseen problems they maypresent.

What do other countries do for schools?A sociological study by the National Opinion Research Center

of Chicago reported findings this week that Catholic high schoolseducate minorities better than public schools do.

This made headlines around the nation and is one more reasonwhy the government should provide tax relief for the parentspaying for these schools to exist. The non-public schools aredoing a great service for America in educating people of all walksof life, the study proves, and are not havens for the priviledged.Catholic and other schools are doing the same thing the publicschools are supposed to be doing, but, at present, are doing it alittle better and solely by parental economic sacrifice.

So--what is the big problem with this country?It is only in the totalitarian countries that private education is so

oppressed. In Western democracies, from which this nationtakes most of its traditions, private schools receive aid routinely.

EDITORIALThose countries are overjoyed to have private and church-related institutions do the job of educating the nation's childrenand are quite willing to provide tax money to help. After all, it (themoney) comes from the people.

Here are some examples, from Sister R. McLaughlin's book,"The Liberty of Choice: Freedom and Justice in Education:"

• ENGLAND; "All current day-by-day costs of the voluntary-aided (i.e., private) schools are paid by the LEA (LocalEducational Authorities) and ministry grants. Both Religious andlay teachers are paid the same salaries." Since 1975, 85 per-cent of capital costs are paid by the government.• SCOTLAND: "The entire cost of building, staffing and main-taining the Catholic and other denominational schools is borne bythe State, while the schools have continued to keep their deno-minational character intact... Teachers' salaries are standarized,members of religious congregations receive the standardsalary."

• WEST GERMANY: In most of the 10 states of West Germany,church-related schools receive from 75 to 100 percent ofoperatina costs from the state and local communitv.

• FRANCE: Under a "simple contract," "teachers in privateschools are paid salaries identical to those paid teachers in publiceducation." Under a "contract of association" the entire costs ofsecular classes "are paid by the State: teachers' salaries, run-ning expenses, equipment, etc."

• BELGIUM: "Teachers in elementary schools receive the basicsalary (about 60 percent of the standard) from the State. Layteachers of both lower and higher secondary levels receive 100percent of the standard salary."

• HOLLAND: "All private schools, not only denominational, arecompletely supported by the State," ... teachers' salaries, capitaland maintenance costs..."are paid for by tax funds.'"

WHOSE FREEDOM IS HE GUARDING?

The parent-supported sphpols in these countries are totallyAmerican and are helping millions of young people towardfulfillment of the American dream of equal opportunity.

It is time for the government of this nation to stop listening tothe Know-Nothings of the land, to stop discriminating againstcitizens who choose alternate schools, and bring them in fromthe cold as partners in forging tomorrow's dreams.

Salvador reporting biasedTo the Editor-

It is frightening to witness the man-ner in which the Catholic press inAmerica is reporting events in ElSalvador.

Archbishop Arturo y Damas and theSalvadoran Bishops Conference havecondemned the Communist-ledguerillas because of the execution ofalleged government collaborators andthe killings of innocent victims.

But does the Catholic press in theUnited States report this?No!

Instead, the Catholic press in theUnited States would rather report thepropagandizing of a group of MarxistMaryknoll Missionaries (a small groupin a great religious order) and themouthings of a few leftist-leaningJesuits

Do we read in the Catholic press inthe United States that ArchbishopDamas, the man Archbishop Romerocalled "my best friend and advisor" hassaid he "has trust" in the junta? Ofcourse not!

Do we read in the Catholic press in

Moments ofbeauty

I have been an opera fan since I firstheard excerpts of "La Traviata" at theage of 14. So I looked forward to en-joying a recent television special aboutLuciano Pavarotti, the magnificentItalian opera tenor.

The program held a treat I had notexpected - a duet, sung by Pavarottiand his father in an Italian church. Theysang "Panis Angel icus" and I was en-tranced.

I knew I was experiencing aprivileged moment of beauty. It wasprayer — for I was intensely consciousat that moment of how God com-municates something of himself to usin such moments.

Beauty is one of the mysteries of thisearth that we all too often take forgranted. Occasionally, however, wewitness a beauty that jolts us out ofour complacency and makes us con-scious that we are, at least thismoment, privileged. We are savoringa spectacular gift which has.,its ori-gins, somewhere beyond this earthlysphere.I feel blessed that I have been wit-

ness to beauty - God's reflection onthis earth — many times in my life.

I especially remember the summerof 1967 when I saw the Broadwayproduction of "Fiddler on the Roof."This was the perfect story, set againstthe background of a people at a tran-sition point between the life they knewand a most uncertain future, andperhaps facing the death of theirculture.

It had marvelously witty dialogueand lyrics set to fine melodies. Ab-solutely beautiful was the Saturdayevening scene when the familycelebrated the Sabbath. The very poorfamily gathered around the candlelittable and, remembering the ways theywere rich, praised God. The scenetransported me and I felt a personaland complete moment of connectionwith God, caused by its beauty.

I have often wondered how theauthor and composer felt when theylooked at what they had done andfound it good. They must have had amoment when they too soared. I feltgrateful to them for creating thisbeauty for us to hear and feel.

Viewing Michelangelo's Pieta in St.Peter's and some of his other worksgives me the same curiosity, imagining

how the artist must have been tran-sfixed when he saw the work of hisown hands and knew it was a gift tothe world.

I have a reason for talking about thecreators of spectacular beauty. I wantto make the point that beauty has areligious function since it always stemsfrom an act of creation.

I believe, furthermore, that every lifehas moments in which one imitatesthe Creator. Some acts of our creationare relatively mundane, such asmaking bread; some are spectacularsuch as planting and cultivating seeds;others are visual bridges between Godand humans, such as the birth of ababy.

I doubt that endowing us with theability to create was an afterthought onthe part of God. I think he knew that ifwe were to yearn to get back one dayto him, this could happen only if wewere given a sample of theexhilaration that comes from creating— a glimpse of his beauty and good-ness.

Beauty in the universe and humanlife is the trademark of the Creator. Inexperiencing beauty, we've madeanother breakthrough to heaven

This week's column is second of aseries dealing with one of the majorstruggles of the 1970's and 80's: thecancellation of the right to life of un-born infants and the effort to regain it.Several aspects of the issue will becovered, including answers toquestions about the proposed HumanLife Amendment.

Why is a Constitutional AmendmentNeeded?

Before 1973, abortion was favoredby only a small minority. A handful ofstates had legalized it to some degree,mostly for so-called "therapeutic"reasons. "Abortion on Demand," aprophecy of the budding pro-lifemovement, was considered by mostpeople as unlikely, even impossible.Even the most vocal pro-abortionistsdenied it as a goal.

A Texas anti-abortion decisionbecame the first lower court case tomake it all the way to the U.S.Supreme Court. Both sides gave theirtestimony, the state on behalf of theunborn baby in the case, and attorneySarah Weddington (later to become anaide to President Jimmy Carter) arguedfor the woman's right to privacy.During the hearings, the nine justicesrefused to consider the proof of achild's "personhood" before birth —the medical and scientific evidenceavailable. "Out of our jurisdiction",they argued, yet their decision wouldsound a death sentence for futuremillions of America's children.That January 22, 1973 ruling struck

down the existing state laws protec-ting the child from abortion. It did thisby interpreting the words of the con-stitution, "the inalienable right to. life,liberty and the pursuit of happiness" asnot pertaining to the child in thewomb. As history again repeated it-

self, a whole class of humanity — justas with the Dred Scott decision on theslaves - was re-classified as "non-persons".The Court didn't stop there. True,

the decision revoked the right to lifeup until the moment of birth, but thejustices also arbitrarily divided thepregnancy up into three "trimesters"for the purpose of defining the state'sjurisdiction. For the first three months,abortion on demand was, for all pur-.

A newwording, however slight, means anamendment. And an amendment, on-ce proposed, must be ratified bythree-fourths of the states: 38 statelegislatures, both houses. No smalljob.

But once the amendment is ratified,it becomes permanent, for all of thestates, for everyone. And no furtherSupreme Court could ever misinter-pret the constitution regarding its

* blanket of protection for human life —from beginning to its natural end.

Weren't there other Supreme Courtabortion decisions?

There have been several over theyears. Most significant were the rulingsto (1) abolish state laws requiringparental approval of an under-18daughter's abortion. (2) Agreementthat the states and the Congresscan refuse to use tax money for abor-tions, and just recently, (3) theupholding of a Utah law requiringparental notification before an abor-tion is committed on their minordaughter. Most states, includingFlorida, have already stopped abortionfunding, and are now expected toadopt parental notification laws. Getting poorQ. I Haven't bought a new record

album in three months, and I used tobuy one every other week. Although Ihave a good job after school, I neverseem to have enough money anymore. What am I going to do? (Nev.)

A. A teen-ager in my neighborhood isfeeling the money pinch just as youare. Latetly he's been riding the busand leaving the driving of cars to thosewho have enough money to buy high-priced cars. Other young people alsoare reporting more financial problemsbrought on by inflation.

What many persons of all ages arelearning is to buy wisely. One youngfriend kept an account of all themoney she spent for two weeks — anddecided some of it had been foolishlyspent on things she really didn't wantall that much.

Think for a day or two or three aboutthe purchases you may be planning:How much do you really want thatnew record album? Will you play itonly a few times and then put it aside?

Another way to save money is toguard against impulse buying. Do youabsolutely need that latest shade ofeye shadow or that new sweateryou've just seen on display?

In a bookstore I am often a victim ofimpulse buying. Every 20 seconds orso I see a book I want. Over a longperiod of time, I have learned to keep-tight rein on my book-buying im-pulses. I'm still not always successful,but I keep trying.

A friend tells me that now we shouldall master the art of getting poor. Shedoesn't mean we'll be without heat,food and clothing, but we simplywon't have as much as we used to andwe'll have to revise our spendinghabits.

This doesn't mean cutting out allgood times. One example: Manyfamilies, instead of taking a vacation atexpensive motels, save money bycamping - and have lots of fun doingso.

Some may be led to find out whattheir community has to offer in theway of free leisure activities. In someareas not even a penny is needed totake a book, tape or long-playingrecord out of the public library. Oftenmuseums are free as well asfascinating. What else does yourcommunity offer?

Perhaps getting poor will lead manyof us to some new, unexpectedpleasures.

Surprisingly, the Bible gives us a clueabout how to view the problems ofour inflationary times. Apparently thatadventurous saint, Paul, discoveredthe secret of contentment. In Chapter4 of the Letter to the Philippians, hewrote to some friends:

"I have learned to be satisfied withwhat I have. I know what it is to be inneed, and what it is to have more thanenough. I have learned this secret sothat anywhere, at any time, I am con-tent, whether I eat well or go hungry,whether I have too much or too little. Ihave the strength to face all conditionsby the power that Christ gives."

Paul's secret is a secret for allseasons.

J. WalshThoughts on suffering and Good Friday

As Good Friday approaches, we face again moreintensely in the person of Jesus the all embracingproblem of suffering in our lives. No one needremind us that the year round the problem isthere, now in this form, now in that. There is noescaping it. It won't go away. Some years, as werejoice with relief, seem to be more free of painand tension than others. The future, we realizehesitantly, has a variety of problems about whichwe dare not think.

If there is one law of life one never forgets, it is thelaw of suffering.

People have always questioned this. From the verybeginning, it had to be asked, "Why is it like this? Whycan't we be bom and live and die without this con-stant threat of suffering? Why must the beginning oflife and the need of life be in circumstances of pain?Why must all of life in between, from the cradle to thegrave, be portioned out a moment at a time, neverwith the certainty that tomorrow is coming, never surethat this moment's relief will belreplaced by the nextmoment's grief?"

WHY? THE BOOK of Genesis tells us how it allstarted, this problem of suffering. As our first paren-ts were created, they enjoyed perfect natural hap-piness. They knew no pain. They did not expect todie, as we know death. Both body and soul weregifted beyond our experience or understanding.

Then came the cause of all suffering, the sin, theact of rebellion, the defiance of God's will.

'To the man he said, 'Because you listened toyour wife and ate from the tree of which I had for-bidden you to eat,

Cursed be the ground because of you.In toil shall you eat its yieldAll the days of your life.Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you,As you eat the plants of the field.By the sweat of your faceshall you get bread to eat,

Until you return to the ground,from which you were taken;For you are dirt,and to dirt you shall return.'"

SUFFERING, then, became a "state of disorderproduced in life by sin." All that we know today asevil thoughts, evil deeds, evil words became part ofAdam and Eve's existence and that of all theirdescendants.

For awhile in the Old Testament there was a ten-dency to explain all suffering, even that of the in-nocent, as punishment for the sins of the parents or

THE PROPHET ISAIAH clarified the mysterysomewhat by insisting that the innocent suffering ofthe Servant of Yahweh is the only way to makesatisfaction for the guilt of the world.

The Gospels, of course, are full of the endless suf-ferings of the Lord. Sinless, without guilt of any kind,always perfectly united with the Father, Jesus

frequently predicted his own suffering as necessaryfor the redemption of the human race. 'Thus it iswritten that the Messiah must suffer and rise fromthe dead on the third day."

"He began to teach them that the Son of Man hadto suffer much, be rejected by the elders . . . be putto death and rise three days later."

AFTER HIS RESURRECTON, the Acts of theApostles summed it all up in reporting Peter'sdiscourse to the people. Men of Israel, listen to me.Jesus, the Nazorean, was a man whom God sent toyou with miracles, wonders and signs as his creden-tials. These God worked through him in your midstas you know. He was delivered up by the set pur-pose and plan of God. You even made use ofpagans to crucify and kill him. God freed him fromdeath's bitter pangs, however, and raised him upagain, for it was impossible that death should keepits hold on him."

Thereafter Paul is forever speaking of the suf-ferings of the followers of Jesus - you and I - beingunited with the sufferings of the Lord and therebygaining great merit.

He insisted, "All that a Christian must suffer hereon earth is nothing in comparison to this futureglory." .

We do, of course, suffer in mind and soul andbody. We suffer the pain of temptation, the grief ofsin, weariness and torment in the body. None of itmakes any sense unless we lay it all against thebackground of Adam's fall and the Paschal Mysteryof Christ's death, resurrection and ascension. •

WHAT A CONTRADICTION to the world'swisdom is it to realize that Good Friday and Eastershow peace and consolation and victory in pain,sorrow and tribulation.

What services mustgovernment provide?

David Stockman may unwittingly be doing theReagan administration a disservice by talking somuch about his philosphy of government. Some ofhis statements are so conservative they make evenCalvin Coolidge look like a liberal.

People are not "entitled" to any federally fundedsocial service, Stockman said during a recent ap-pearance on "Issues and Answers." "I don't believethat there is any entitlement, any basic right tolegal services, or any other kind of services..Theidea...that almost every service that someone mightneed in life ought to be provided, financed by thegovernment as a matter of basic right, is wrong. Wechallenge that. We reject that notion."

If Stockman's hard-nose ideological pronounce-ment accurately relfects the thinking of the newadministration, ifs going to be a long cold winterfor the poor and the disadvantaged. Stockman hasbluntly put them on notice that the administrationis prepared to eliminate any federally funded socialprogram in order to balance the budget.

WHILE IT IS TRUE Stockman is prepared for nowto put a "safety net" under the "truly" needy; hisstatement indicates he does not believe even thetruly needy are "entitled" to such protection.

Many church-related social agencies have alreadyexpressed their disagreement with Stockman'scoid-biooded social pbiiosophv. charging that the

administration's approach to budget cutting lackscompassion.

Their criticism shouldn't surprise Stockman. As aformer Yale Divinity School student, he must knowthe majority of religious authorities in social ethicsdisagree with his philosophy, holding that citizensare entitled to certain essential services from theirgovernment in cases of necessity.

Pope John XXIII summarized Catholic tradition on

"Church social agencies do not opposefederal budget cuts in principle. They un-derstand the need to trim the budget andcurb inflation. They argue, however, thatmany of the proposed cuts will cause thepoor and disadvantaged undue hardship."

this issue in the encyclical "Pacem in Terris.""EXPERIENCE HAS TAUGHT us that unless these

(government) authorities take suitable action withregard to economic, political and cultural matters,inequalities between the citizens tend to becomemore and more widespread, especially in themodern world, and as a result human rights arerendered totally ineffective and the fulfillment of

duties is compromised."The encyclical points out that governments must

"make efforts to see that insurance systems aremade available to the citizens, so that in case ofmisfortune or increased family responsibilities, noperson will be without the necessary means tomaintain a decent standard of living."

The majority of Protestant and Jewish socialethicists agree.

CHURCH SOCIAL AGENCIES do not opposefederal budget cuts in principle; they understandthe need to trim the budget and curb inflation.They argue, however, that many of the proposedcuts will cause the poor and disadvantaged unduehardship.

Church groups are not about to get involved in apartisan controversy with the administration. But ifStockman's philosophy prevails in the ad-ministration, the church agencies will have nochoice but to break with the administration andstand up for the rights of the poor and disadvan-taged. They will not repudiate their own socialphilosophy for the sake of currying favor with this .or any other administration.

Having already declared their political indepen-dence regarding the E! Salvador crisis, i would fullyexpect them to do the same with the ad-ministration's budget-cutting proposals.

WASHINGTON (NC) - Appliedresearch in the Catholic Church is un-dervalued, underused and underfun-ded, William C. McReady told par-ticipants at the symposium "TowardMore Effective Research in the Chur-ch" held April 1-3 in Washington.

McReady, director of the NationalResearch Center (NORC) in Chicago,said, "If s easier to see the relevance ofmoney donated to build a shrine orrestore a church" than to see the needfor money to be donated for research.But, "the problem is not in bricks andmortar, and he called on the churchnot to underrate research's con-tributions.

THE SYMPOSIUM was sponsored bythe Foundations and Donors In-terested in Catholic Activities, Inc.(FADICA). McReady told the groupthat funds for research in Catholicareas come almost entirely fromgovernment and other secular areas.

McReady gave what he called a briefportrait of American Catholics, asstudied by NORC over the last 20years.

He cited recent studies which showthat Catholic school graduates do bet-ter than other graduates and called theimpact of Catholic schools an ex-traordinary finding.

In other studies, he said, "We areunable to detect a crisis in Catholicfamilies," but added that support forvocations has diminished, especiallyamong priests and mothers. He saidthat research shows that CCD instruc-tion provides little more than noreligious education at all, a study CCDleaders "tried to suppress."

Citing the controversial finding thatthe majority of Catholic laymen andpriests have rejected church teaching onbirth control and divorce and the findingthat "drifters return to the church on ;their own terms," McReady said peoplemisunderstand the purpose of research.

"WE DO NOT SAY it is right forthem to do so (reject churchteachings) - we're merely saying that iswhat they are doing...You must not fallinto the practice of confusing theherald of the bad news with the badnews itself."

McReady urged foundations in-terested in research to provide

adequate money and to hireprofessionals. "You must not restrictscholars," he told the group, addingthat "the facts the church needs to ac-cept should not be suppressed."

"Almost every research project willturn up something acutely em-barrrassing and that is probably mostimportant," he said. When a report ispublished, he said, researchers mustprepare "to contend against misunder-standing and distortion."

Some research is found useful, someis ignored and most is not supported bythe church, McReady said. PeterRobinson, president of FADICA,responded that Catholic foundations"are conservative creatures" and that"Catholics have arrived recently as faras wealth is concerned."

Robinson said foundations look tothe church for support and they do notsee much evidence of it fromAmerican bishops.

"It looks like you want to walk out onthe plank," he said, addressing thebishops. "If you step with us we'd bemore assured."

Father Joseph Komonchak, associateprofessor of religion and religiouseducation at the Catholic University ofAmerica, gave a theologian's view.

"ONE SHOULD not have to choosebetween the theological and the,sociological view of the church," hesaid. "The theologians have torecognize that the church is a quitehuman community."

He said this is not easily done. "Ifsdifficult for what once called itself the'queen of sciences'" to accept that "it isnot the full science of man."

Merton Strommen, president of SearchInstitute, Minneapolis, addressed thequestion of how best to get the resultsof research into the mainstream of thechurch.

Strommen pointed out some researchroadblocks. Reports are often hard toread and apply and they often fail toaddress real life issues, he said. Also,there is a general resistance to change.

"We need to demonstrate that thepay-off is worth the investment of timeand effort required in adopting theresearch results," Strommen said.

they were not surprised at the finding of a govern-ment study which said that Catholic ana otherprivate schools provide a better education thanpublic schools.

The study was done by sociologist James S.Coleman. It was funded by the National Center forEducational Statistics, a government agency.

The study, "Public and Private Schools" met withcriticism from public school groups, but Father

Thomas Gallagher, secretary of the U.S. CatholicConference Department of Education, said, "Sowhafs new? I knew it all along. I've always beenconfident of Catholic Schools."

Father Gallagher said the study "augurs well forthe whole issue of tuition tax credits" for parentswho send their children to private schools.

IN HIS STUDY, which was to be presented April 7in Washington, Coleman stated that, "Catholicschools more nearly approximate the 'commonschool' ideal of American education than do publicschools, in that the achievement levels of studentsfrom different parental educational backgrounds, ofblack and white students, and of Hispanic and non-

Hispanic white students are more nearly alike inCatholic schools than in public schools."

"Thafs true," according to Father John F. Meyers,president of the National Catholic EducationalAssociation (NCEA). "Catholic schools haveprovided that function of upward mobility for theimmigrants of the last century and they provide itfor the poor of this century."

Coleman found that "private schools producebetter cognitive outcomes than do public schools,"and "private schools provide a safer, moredisciplined and ordered environment than publicschools."

He also found that private schools may do moreto encourage interest in higher education.However, he found evidence does not indicate thatprivate schools are more efficient than publicschools, accomplishing their task at a lower cost.

CRITICS SAY Coleman has read more than waswarranted into his data. One educationalsociologist said the statistical techniques are out ofdate, overestimating the quality of private schools.Critics argued that students are in Catholic schoolsbecause they have high scores, they don't have highscores because they are in Catholic schools.

Catholic schools enroll about half as high a propor-tion of blacks as the public schools and otherprivate schools only about a quarter as high aproportion, Coleman reported. Internally,however, the other private sector is least raciallysegregated and the public sector by far the mostsegregated.

The study indicates that Catholic schools do have

a good integration rate in places where there is notas much funding, Father Gallagher said.

Father Gallagher added that he is grateful for thewealth of information about Catholic schools thatthe study provides. "Ifs of great value to Catholicsecondary school educators, ifs an encouragementto them," he said.

"Instead of criticizing the study, people shouldlook at the success of Catholic schools to see if theycan learn from those success stories to improve theother schools of our nation," said Father Meyers.

WASHINGTON (NC) - As expected, the at-tempted assassination of President Reagan inWashington March 30 has intensified debateover gun control. Within hours of the shootingpro- and anti-handgun lobbies were firingilvos at each other, often using the well-worn•ogans of the past.The shooting prompted at least two Catholic

bishops, as well as some Catholic editorialwriters, to renew calls for effective handguncontrol laws as a means of stemming the tideof violence that seems to continue to sweepthe country.

"THIS GREAT tragedy reminds us that violen-ce and the easy availability of firearms makeevery citizen of high or low station vulnerableto a murderous gun," said Cardinal HumbertoMedeiros of Boston. "An appropriate solutionmust be sought now to guard against more ofthese tragedies."

Church involvement in the gun controldebate has gone on for several years, includingone episode when a pro-gun lobby urgedCatholics to withhold their contributions to thechurch until the U.S. Catholic Conference, thenational public policy agency of the U.S.bishops, ceased its anti-gun "propaganda."

One of the church's initial involvements inthe debate came in 1974, when the bishops in-cluded gun control in their overall "RespectLife" program.

Early that year Cardinal John Cody of Chicagoin a letter to his pastors linked gun control withabortion. Referring to recent shooting deathsof two Chicago policemen, the cardinal, whoat the time was chairman of the bishops pro-lifecommittee, said he was concerned "not onlyfor defenseless unborn" but also for "human lifewhenever it is under attack or threatened."

THEN WHEN the annual respect life obser-vance rolled around in October, stringent guncontrol legislation was listed as one of theprogram's aims.

"The continued manufacture and sale offirearms is a serious threat to law and order,and it makes it easy for the criminal or theemotionally unstable person to seriously harmothers," said that year's respect life studyguide.

The next year the bishops through their socialdevelopment and world peace committeepublished a major statement favoring anational firearms policy, including a ban onSaturday Night Specials, a several day coolingoff period between purchase and actualpossession of a handgun, registration of han-dguns and licensing of handgun owners, andmore effective and better enforcement ofexisting handgun regulations.

"We realize this is a controversial issue andthat some people of good faith will find them-selves opposed to these measures," thebishops acknowledged, but handgun control,they added, while not eliminating gun violen-ce, would be "an indispensable element" inany resolution of the problem.

In 1978 the committee reiterated its positionin a broader statement, "Community andCrime." It expressed shock at the level of crimein the nation and listed handguns as one ofseveral areas where crime control initiativesshould be taken.

It also was in 1978 — when emotionssurrounding the handgun debate were par-ticularly high because of proposed newTreasury Department gun regulations - whenthe Citizen's Committee to Keep and Bear Armsurged members to boycott Catholic schoolsand church collections because of thebishops' involvement in the issue.

"GUN-OWNING Catholic parents withchildren in Catholic parochial schools couldtell their pastor in polite but no uncertain termsthat they're going to yank their kids out ofthose schools unless they're guaranteed thatthis anti-gun USCC propaganda is kept out ofthe school curriculum," the organizationsuggested.

It argued that anti-handgun legislation wouldleave the poor defenseless because the poorwould no longer be able to purchase inexpen-sive handguns for their protection.

One of the more dramatic handgun proteststook place in 1975 when a Columbus, Ohio,pastor sponsored a 20th century equivalent ofthe beating of swords into plowshares byurging parishioners to turn in their handguns"as a protest against America's frontier men-tality."

Eighteen handguns were turned in andmelted down into metal crosses for delivery toarea members of Congress.

Individual bishops and dioceses, meanwhilehave issued their own statements favoring gunrestrictions.

Whether the near miss on Reagan's life startsa further debate on Capitol Hill over the con-trol of guns remains to be seen. The shootingof ex-Beatle John Lennon nearly four monthsearlier also brought a flurry of new gun controlproposals, but also resulted in little concreteaction.

President Reagan, investigators had nohard evidence that John W. HinckleyJr., despite his infatuation with actressJodie Foster, actually saw the film "TaxiDriver."

In it Miss Foster plays a 12-year-oldprostitute who attracts the attention ofa mentally disturbed young mannamed Travis Bickle (played by RobertDe Niro), whose character andbehavior bear a strong resemblance tothat of Hinckley himself.

Bickle, having been spurned by thepretty campaign worker of a senator

up for re-election, shaves his headMohawk-style and arms himself withthree handguns and a knife with the in-tention of assassinating the senator.Balked in this by an alert security man,who recognizes him from a previousencounter, Bickle flees and then ventshis rage on the young prostitute'spimp and his cronies in a protractedorgy of violence that very nearly ear-ned the film an X rating.

EVEN IF IT TURNS out that Hinckleydid in fact see "Taxi Driver," I think thatit would be dubious reasoning to con-tend that the movie provoked his at-tempted assassination of PresidentReagan.

By the time Travis Bickle made hisappearance on the screen, he hadalready become a cliche in theAmerican consciousness - the lonely,unloved drifter, acutely insecure, filledwith ill-suppressed rage, aching to dosomething that will make people payattention to him. Lee Harvey, Oswaldand Arthur Bremer had no rieed of a"Taxi Driver" to provoke their mur-derous acts; nor did Hinckley or MarkDavid Chapman, that muddled youngman who shot down John Lennon afew months ago

On the other hand, if Hinckley didsee "Taxi Driver," it could hardly havebeen a boon to his mental health. The

film takes a grave problem and, in-stead of treating it in a serious and in-telligent manner, sensationalizes it,shamelessly exploiting its potential forviolent display.

"TAXI DRIVER," has no intellectucaldepth, no human resonance. Wenever learn what makes Bickle tick orhow he got the way he is. We can'tempathize with him any more thanwe can empathize with Popeye orSpiderman. Though based upon realassassins, Bickle has no validity as acharacter. His only function is to serveas the vehicle for a fantasy of

Natural Family PlanningDear Mary: My husband and I, abiding by the

teaching of the Catholic Church, have practiced"rhythm" throughout our marriage. We have readof the Billings method, but wonder if it -offers anyhelp to us now that I am of menopause age. We areboth 51. (Minn.)

A. Natural family planning is a method of plan-ning or avoiding the conception of children basedon the fact that a woman has fertile and infertiletimes in the. course of her monthly cycle. Naturalfamily planning involves much more than calendarrhythm and the taking of a temperature.

In recent years medical researchers have iden-tified several physiological signs associated with theprocess of ovulation. The Billings method refers tothe detection of ovulation through certain signsdiscovered by Drs. John and Lynn Billings.

A HUSBAND AND WIFE can learn to recognizethese signs themselves and thus recognize whenovulation is about to occur. Since NFP is not basedsolely on a calendar, couples can learn to recognizeovulation even when a calendar is inadequate, forexample, after childbirth or, as in your case, in pre-menopause.

NFP is best taught on a couple-to-couple basis for• several reasons. While there are manuals available,

a reader might misunderstand or misinterpret someexplanation. A book cannot answer the reader'squestions.

Second, NFP requires the cooperation andcommitment of husband and wife. NFP teacherspresent not only techniques, but the philosophyand theology which they recognize as an integralpart of the method.

Much of the information on NFP in the UnitedStates comes through the Human Life Center, St.John's University, Collegeville, Minn. 56321.The center runs seminars and offers extensivematerials on NFP. Mail Kit No. 3, available for$12.95, offers the materials necessary to learn andpractice NFP, and most important, includes thename and phone number of the certified NFP.teaching couple nearest you. So important is thispersonal contact that the NFP director at the cen-ter, Carmen Sallace, says, "I can't recommend1 anybook, even our own, without a personal teaching."

NFP does, of course,always involve some period of abstinence.When the rules are fully understood and faithfullyfollowed, NFP is an effective way to preventpregnancy.

Terry Reilly4*fe Thoughts on Holy Week

It seems that in the cycle of Voice columns thatMimi, Carol Farrell, and I offer, I have the privilegeof writing about Holy Week every year. I guess oneof the mysteries of this time of year is that it isalways different yet never changes. The reality ofHoly Week and especially of Holy Thursday, GoodFriday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday is the samealways and ever.

The reality of the Passion, Crucifixion, andResurrection as it meets us makes our experiencedifferent every year. Hopefully, it is how we meetJesus in these events that helps us to grow in Hisgrace. It would be ,unfortunate ;if we were soprogrammed that vy experienced Holy Week onlyby our routine presence in Church: go to Churchfor Holy Thursday Mass, go to Good Friday services,

attend Easter Sunday Mass. These alone are okay,and essential to our devotional life. Yet what we andour family experience individually is even morecritical. We need to dispose ourselves not only tothe schedule of services of Holy Week. We may fallinto the trap of "obligation" in the legal sense,rather than in opening ourselves to grow in agreater love of the Lord.

In years past we have suggested that families notonly attend all the services and programs that theirparishes offer, but also plan on home ceremonies.We have suggested parents washing the feet oftheir children, a reconciliation evening whenfamily members may seek the forgiveness of oneanother or even of someone outside the family, ora passover (seder) meal.

We encourage you and your family to continue toparticipate in all these opportunities as well as anyparticular cultural observances or other ideas youmight develop. But my suggestion this year is toleave some SPACE. We might get so involved in allof our observances that we might forget to.praya;one. We might forget to "stop and rest awhile" asJesus tells us.

It is hard for me to stop. Somehow I seem to be aglutton for activity, and if there is one week of theyear that should be low on activity, it is Hqly Week.I believe the singlemost important way to observeHoly Week is to "stop and rest awhile!" Maybe thenthe other observances and celebrations wili have adeeper meaning. Maybe our children will also catchon and we can truly experience the week IN PEACE.

Holy Week, the most solemn week of theyear, has arrived. It is time to pause in thought,to gaze into the past, and the future. Time well-spent. The philosopher Santayana once said,"One who is ignorant of history is condemnedto repeat its errors." We look, to learn.

Five weeks of Lent have passed, during whichtime Jesus has occupied center stage. We haveseen Him tested by temptation, and learnedfrom that the kind of Messiah He was. On Mt.Tabor, where He was transfigured, we heardHim speak of His coming death. Next, we sawHim conversing with a Samaritan woman atJacob's well, and heard Him telling her of theliving water that would slake thirst forever,meaning by that the truth He had come toreveal. A bit later He openly claimed to be the"light of the world" (Jn 8:12), and demonstratedHis power by giving sight to the man bornblind. More astonishing even than that, he whowould say "I am the Life" (14:6) was also a life-giver; Lazarus came forth from the tomb at Hisbidding.

WE HAVE MEDITATED, then, on Jesus theMessiah, stronger than the devil, and upon theBeloved Son of Cod, preacher of truth, giver oflight and Master of death. Jesus is truly thetremendous, fascinating mystery.

In today's first reading, Isaiah speaks aboutthe Suffering Servant of the Lord, a willing vic-tim for others' sins. We are first puzzled at this,then impressed as we begin to understandsomething of what love is all about. In thesecond reading, Paul sends the Philippians (andus) a highly compressed expression of true

Christianity. Jesus who was pre-existent withGod from all eternity, "emptied himself ofglory in becoming man. But in the end he wasrichly repaid for his obedience, for He is nowknown to be, and is universally saluted as,Lord.

Small wonder that the faithful, in every age,listen with rapt attention to the story of hispassion and death. Jesus with great personalcourage advanced resolutely towards Hisdeath, and by deliberately accepting it, gave anew dimension to unselfish love, and humility.

ON THIS ONE OCCASION, Jesus not onlypermitted, but took a hand in arranging apublic manifestation in His honor. Palm bran-ches, classical symbols of victory were wavedabout him as He rode in modest triumph fromBethany to Jerusalem. The air resounded tocheers ("hosannas") for the Son of David whocame in the name of the Lord (Psalm 118:25).These joyous shouts are heard even today atMass at trie Sanctus.The crowd that shouted Hosannas soon lost

its enthusiasm, and in a short time clamored forJesus' death. This comes as no surprise. Allthrough the gospel, parallel to the-growinglight, a stubborn darkness also grew. As thepassion unfolds, we view with awe the giganticstruggle between Good and Evil. It was astruggle to the death, and Jesus was the victor.Not even death could hold Him.

What makes Jesus' victory so stupendous, isthat he shares it with us. Men may still die, butdeath - whether physical or moral - no longerhas power to hold them captive. Blessed, thriceblessed is He who came in the name of theLord.

'Think One!'Miami Rally for Jesus brings many Christians together

'Think one," read the banner overthe Orange Bowl Saturday as thousan-ds of Christians from alldenominations and cultures and evenpeople of different faiths gathered fora day of prayer and celebration at thefirst "Miami for Jesus" rally.

The Miami event, organized by theecumenical leaders who put togetherthe "Washington for Jesus" rally lastspring, is just the beginning of what ishoped to be a 20-city sweep of thecountry with similar events over forth-coming years.

But no one would argue that Miami,facing it's own serious problems, wasan appropriate place for the rallies tobegin.

"WE SINCERELY believe Jesus can dosomething for Miami and bringtogether different sects," said NationalChairman John Cimenez before theevent.

Catholics who attended the eventseemed to agree that the main pur-pose of the gathering which featuredspeakers and music was unification.

"The main concern is the com-munity, in order to pull together totranscend the language differences.The only bridge we can have is JesusChrist," said Jim Lamb of St. Louisparish in South Miami.

About two dozen members of theparish car-pooled to attend the eventand listen to their pastor Father DavidRussell who was one of the afternoon's

speakers. There would have beenmore, they said, but some of theyounger members of the parish wereattending a retreat.

"WE PRAY THAT the Lord sheds lighton Miami so we can all be together,"said parishioner AngieFredella.

"These are people who know loveand can share it," another parishioneradded.

"I think this is great, we should havemore of these things (ecumenicalevents)."

"THE COMMUNITY is desperately inneed of healing within ifs religiousbodies. If the body is fractured howcan we even expect to have a power-ful impact on the community? I thinkwe should make time for ecclesiasticaland personal renewal."

"Ifs rare that Catholics have a chanceto join together with other Christiansstraight across denominational lines inacts of repentance, praise of God andlove of each other."

"To the degree that it is that kind ofexperience, ifs something the Lorduses for our Christian maturity."

Saturday was not a time for complexpolitical posturing or seriousdiscussion about local issues. It was aday of faith, and sharing of spiritualfeelings.As one enthusiastic young member of

St. Cecilia parish put it simply:here for the Holy Spirit."

At age 74, Mrs. Rebecca Doe isknown in Dade County as the"dynamic backbone" of the federallyfunded Spectrum Program and ProjectNeed, a preventative program dealingwith mismanagement and misuse ofdrugs among the aged.

During the first year of the grant,Mrs. Doe has directed 84 seminars andspoken to 4,000 senior citizens inchurches, retirement centers, hotels,"condominiums, etc. •

A Miami resident since 1967 she wasformerly a staff member of the Expan-ded Nutrition Program of FloridaCooperative Extension Service. Golden jubilariansBishop Paul F. Tanner, D.D.

The seventh Bishop of St. Augustine,mother diocese of the Province ofMiami, is now a resident of the Arch-diocese of Miami following hisretirement in 1979.

A native of Peoria, III., who was or-dained a priest on May 30, 1931 forthe Archdiocese of Milwaukee, BishopTanner was a high school teacher,assistant pastor and archdiocesanyouth director in ,his home diocese,before being appointed director of theUSCC Youth Dept. in 1942.

In 1945, the prelate, who is the co-author of a textbook, "Methods ofTeaching Religion in ElementarySchools," was named assistant general

. secretary of the USCC. Nine years laterthe Holy Father honored him byelevating him to the rank of mon-signor. For the npvt 10 vears he servedas general secretary of the USCC andduring that time became the first priestholding that office to be appointed tothe episcopacy.

Following the death of ArchbishopJoseph P. Hurley in 1967 Bishop Tan-ner was named Bishop of St. Augustineearly in 1968. During the next 11years, as the spiritual head of thenation's oldest Catholic community,Bishop Tanner ordained 20 newpriests, dedicated nine new churchesand numerous parish centers.

In addition he inaugurated a self-support system for financing thediocese which has been a model forother Sees throughout the nation anddeveloped an in-house fund to financeparishes, and other construction toavoid-skyrocketing interest rates ofbanks and mortgage companies.

Now residing in St. William parish,Naples, Father Geary, who retiredfrom active duty in 1973, is a native ofCharleville, Ireland, who waseducated in his native county and or-dained on June 14, 1931 in Water-front.

His first parochial assignment in theDiocese of St. Augustine was as anassistant for three years in Little Flower

Late in 1954 he was assignedby the late Archbishop Josepn P.Hurley to organize a new parish inNaples.

At the Archdiocesan level he wasdirector of the Apostleship of Prayerfrom 1958 until his retirement andwhile serving on S. Florida's west coastwas Vicar Forane and spiritualmoderator of the Southeast CoastDeanery of the Miami ACCW.

Fr. John W. Schlinkmann

A native of Germany, FatherSchlinkmann studied for the priest-hood in his home country and atCatholic University of America, whichawarded him a Bachelorate in SacredTheology prior to his ordination onJune 9, 1931 at the National Shrine ofthe Immaculate Conception.

As a priest of the Society of theDivine Savior he served in St. Georgeparish, Baltimore, following or-dination, and came to South Florida asa chaplain at Holy Cross Hospital, FortLauderdale in 1956. He served in thesame capacity at Miami's MercyHospital from 1957 to 1959 when hewas named an assistant pastor at LittleFlower church, North Palm Beach.

In 1972 he was reassigned as pastorof St. Gregory parish, Plantation, andchaplain there for K. of C. CouncilNo. 5971. Two years later ne was ap-pointed pastor of St. Paul the Apostleparish, Lighthouse Point. In 1976 thelate Archbishop Coleman F. Carrollappointed him to the Archdiocesan

Msgr. Maurice W. Foley

A native of Chicago, Msgr. Foleystudied for the priesthood at St. Maryof the Lake, Mundelein, III. prior to hisordination for the Archdiocese ofChicago on April 11,1931.

A former chaplain in the U.S. Navy,he retired from active duty in 1972 andestablished residence in BrowardCounty assisting in St. ElizabethChurch.

Rocco D'Angelo is a native of newYork City who attended schools there

He was ordained in Martinsburg, W.Va. after graduation from CatholicUniversity of America, and wasstationed at various parishes in Ohio,Puerto Rico, and California beforecoming to the Archdiocese of Miami in1962. From 1962 to 1964 he was anassistant pastor in Holy Rosary Church,Perrine. From 1966 to 1968 he was anassistant at St. Berdanette Church,Hollywood.

A veteran of four years overseasduty with the Navy in World War II,Fatner D'Angelo also served as astudent counselor at Our Lady ofLourdes Academy and was moderatorof the CYO East Coast and SouthwestDeaneries.

He is presently engaged in priestlyministry in the Diocese of St. Peters-burg where he is administrator ofGood Shepherd parish, Tampa.

Dea is a native of Braddock, Pa. whoprepared for the priesthood at St.Fidelis Seminary, Herman, Pa. and St.Francis Seminary, Loretto, Pa.

Following graduate studies atVillanova University, Father O'Deacame to South Florida in 1963 and ser-ved as ah assistant pastor in LittleFlower parish. Coincident with thisposition he was also Scout Chaplainfor the Broward County Deanery.

Late in 1965 he was assigned asassistant in St. Mark parish, BoyntonBeach, where he served until thefollowing year when he was named anassistant in St. Anthony Church, FortLauderdale. In 1969 he became anassistant pastor at St. Luke parish, LakeWorth where he was stationed until1971 when he was named ad-ministrator of the hewly establishedparish of St. Agatha in Sweetwater.

Since 1979 Father O'Dea has beenpastor of Holy Spirit parish, Lantana.

Fr. John E. ReiserA native of Clarksburg, W. Va.,

Father Reiser was ordained on June 9,1956 following studies for thepriesthood at the Abbey ofGethsemani, frappist, Ky. and XaviefUniversity, Cincinnati.

Formerly Novice Master and RetreatMaster at Our Lady of GethsemaniMonastery, he came to the Arch-diocese of Miami in 1965 and was fortwo years an assistant pastor at St.Lawrence Church, North Miami Beach.From 1969 to 1970 he was an assistantin Blessed Trinity Parish, MiamiSprings.

In 1970 he was appointed ad-

ministrator and subsequently pastor ofOur Lady Queen of Martyrs Church,Fort Lauderdale. Since 1971 he hasbeen chaplain for Court Maria Reginaof Catholic Daughters of America.

Fr. Thomas J. RynneBorn in Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland,

Father Rynne was educated at InaghNational School, St. Joseph College, Mt.Melleray Seminary and All Hallow'sCollege, where he was ordained June17,1956.

From late 1956 to early 1960 he ser-ved in parishes of the Archdiocese ofWellington in New Zealand. From1960 to 1963 he served as an assistantin St. Francis of Assisi parish, RivieraBeach. In 1963 he'was assigned as anassistant in St. Patrick parish, MiamiBeach. From 1964 to 1968 he wasadministrator of Holy Spirit parish, Lan-tana.

During • his assignment at MiamiBeach, Father Rynne was chaplain to K.of C. Council No. 3270 and from 1965to 1966 held the same chaplaincy inthe Boynton Beach Council. For oneyear he was also spiritual director ofthe Palm Beach District of the MiamiCouncil of Catholic nurses.

Since 1968 he has been pastor of St.John the Apostle parish, Hialeah.

Fr. Robert E. Backherms, S.M.A priest of the society of Mary,

Father Backherms was born in Akron,O. and attended schools there as wellas the University of Dayton and theUniversity of Fribourg before his or-dination on July 22,1956 in Fribourg.

A member of the New York Provinceof Marianists, Father Backherms has aDoctorte in Sacred Theology awardedhim by the University of Fribourg andprior to coming to South Florida was amember of the faculty in various ,schools administered by his com-munity. ;

He is presently a member of thefaculty at Chaminade High School,Hollywood. In the early 1970's FatherBackherms conducted retreats at boththe Cenacle and Dominican Retreat.House.

Fr. Nelson FernandezOne of four priest-brothers, Father

Fernandez is a native of Havana whostudied at El Buen Pastor Seminaryprior to his ordination on Sept. 16,1956 in the Cuban capital's cathedral.

During the summer of 1961 he cameto the Archdiocese of Miami andjoined the staff of the UnaccompaniedCuban Children's Program as chaplain

in the Cuban Boys Home located atthat time in Miami's northeast section.

Early in 1962 he was appointed anassistant pastor at St. Mary Cathedralwhere he served until 1965 when hewas named an assistant in ImmaculateConception Church, Hiaieah. Twoyears later he was reassigned to FortMyers on S. Florida's we«t coast as anassistant in St. Francis Xav̂ er parish andadministrator of San Jose Mission. In1970 he was appointed assistantpastor of St. Monica parish and oneyear later became an assistant in St.Francis de Sales parish.

Since 1973, Father Fernandez, whosesister, LiliaJs a Sister of St. Joseph anda member of the faculty of St. MaryCathedral School, has been pastor ofSt. Robert Bellarmine Church. In ad-dition he is chaplain of Our Lady ofCharity Council of the K. of C.

Fr. Michael P. Hogan, O.S.A.A native of Chicago, Tie attended the

Augustinian College and VillanovaUniversity before being ordained apriest of the Augustinian Fathers onJune 9,1956.

After teaching in schools ad-ministered by his community inDetroit and Chicago, Father Hoganbecame public relations director forthe order's midwest province withheadquarters in Chicago. Whilestationed there he took graduatestudies at DePaul University, whichawarded him a Master of Educationdegree in Counseling in 1967. From1970 to 1974 he was assistant principaland guidance director at MendelCatholic Prep School, Chicago.

He came to the Archdiocese ofMiami in 1974 and in 1978 wasassigned to the staff of the CatholicService Bureau as director of Alcohol

-Outreach services as well as anassistant pastor at St. Augustine Chur-ch. .

Father Hogan serves as president ofthe Dade County Council onAlcoholism. He is also a member ofthe faculties at Biscayne College andSt. Vincent de Paul Seminary, BoyntonBeach.

Fr. Edward D. Lowney, O.M.I.Born in Lowell, Mass., Father Lowney

studied for the priesthood at OblateSeminary and Catholic University ofAmerica, Washington, D.C. as well asBoston College.

And I believe, fur-thermore, that a filmmaker, like everyother kind of maker, is responsible forwhat he makes.

Scorcese and Shrader can't be heldresponsible for what happened thatMonday afternoon in Washington butthey, along with the likes of Brian dePalma ("Dressed to Kill") and MichaelCimino ('The Deer Hunter"), and criticssuch as Ms. Kaelwho gleefully hai!their worst excesses, are certainlyresponsible not only for the ex-ploitation and the celebration ofviolence that occurs in films such asthis but also for obscuring with theirsensationalism issues of tragicsignificance in contemporaryAmerican society.

No, we can't blame filmmakers forassassinations and for the brutal mur-der of women. But we can blamemany of them for making it more dif-ficult to confront the ills of our society.

WE CAN BLAME them for distortingreality with fantasies — fantasies con-jured up by the most advanced andp e r s u a s i v e c i n e m a t o g r a p h i ctechniques at a cost of millions. Wecan blame them for a climate in whichviolence,especially machismo violence,has been elevated to a mystique. Wecan blame them for dulling our moralsenses and making it more difficult todeal with the ills that plague us.

No, a pernicious movii may not havethe same direct effect upon us that abadly positioned gas tank in our carmight, but I think that we are deceivingourselves if we believe that it has noeffect. We can never link a particularcase of lung cancer to a particular un-filtered smoke stack, but every un-filtered smoke stack that exists makesthe atmosphere more dangerous toour lungs.

After serving as a missionary in Africafor more than 10 years, Father Nolancame to South Florida and in 1973 wasassigned as an assistant pastor in St.Jerome parish, Fort lauderdale, untillater that year when he becameassociate chaplain at Holy CrossHospital. According to a Gallup Poll, as many as 49 percentof adults born into Catholic families do not par-ticipate in Mass on Sunday; nearly 20 percent ofadults born into Catholic families consider them-selves.totally alienated from the church.

These statistics have been recognized by manyparishes as a challenge. Well-planned efforts havebeen undertaken to invite non-practicing Catholicsback to parish communities. There are even caseswhere it has been discovered that some peoplewere just waiting for such an invitation.

Of course, it isn't easy to capture anyone's atten-tion in today's society. The media and the mails areflooded with attempts to capture people's atten-tion - to buy, to join, to support, to oppose. So theimpact a parish will make in its attempt to reachout is going to depend on how intent it is to em-•body the Gosple in its worship, to be a communityIn which people care for each other, and to furtherthe kingdom of God in the world.

WHAT CAN parishes and their people do aboutthis challenge? Many parishes, spurred on bythe 1974 Synod of Bishops in Rome, whenchurch leaders from all over the world met todiscuss "evangelization," and by the late Pope PaulVJ's apostolic exhortation on evangelization, recog-nize that definite action is needed to reachCatholics who are alienated from the church. Theseparishes and their people want to share themeaning of faith in their lives.

The word "evangelization" simply means spread-ing the good news of Jesus - doing what the earlyevangelists of the church did.'

As a matter of fact, there are several waysparishes and their people do this.

1. Parishes do the work of evangelization whenthey encourage people to Fefleet-on the Gospelana to examine the meaning of their faith.

2. Parishes do the work ot evangelization whentheir love and commitment can be seen in theircelebration of the liturgy, in their preaching, in theircare for youth and families, in their appreciation ofpeople's struggles in life and in their hospitality.Then alienated Catholics, recognizing the Spiritwithin the parish, may want to look in on thechurch again.

3. Parishes do the work of evangelization whenthey undertake-specific efforts-to- reach out to

people. Door-to-door visits, letters of welcome toall residing within the parish's; boundaries. Articlesand advertisements in local newspapers, andspecial events such as lectures or discussionsdevoted to questions and problems people haveconcerning the church, are among the waysparishes and their people do this.

4. Parishes do the work of evangelization whenthey promote activity that will influence societywith the values of the Gospel, values such asfreedom and justice and the value of caring for

people most in need.THESE FOUR approaches are all dimensions of

evangelization. They are ways to fulfill Jesus' man-date to make discipfes of all people.

In fact, these four aspects of evangelization mustbe carried out together. Reaching out to others haslittle meaning if there are no efforts at the sametime to deepen our own faith and to make theparish community an authentic expression of thatfaith. For one thing, the credibility of efforts toreach alienated Catholics increases when those ef-forts reflect our own love and interest in the faith.

We may even suggest that the primary means ofCatholic evangelization in through the vitality of theparish and its people. For the parish is a peoplewho are trying to be Christ in the world today. It is acommunity in which people come together to growin faith and to support one another in living the lifeof Christ.

There can be many efforts to reach alienatedCatholics. In fact, many efforts are needed, in-cluding all the well-planned efforts to capturepeople's attention, to train leaders for this work, toprepare to encounter the people who are, it mustbe remembered, not always alienated for the samereasons.

But nothing takes the place of the Christian com-munity and its visible faith - the community that willbe met when and if an alienated Catholic comes tothe parish.

It is generally agreed that the author of the Gospel of Mat-thew - who, for convenience sake, we still call Matthew - usedthe Gospel of Mark as one of his resources. But if Mark's Gospelwas accepted and used with veneration in Matthew's com-munity, why would another Gospel have been needed?

The answer does not lie in the author's desire to add materialthat Mark did not use.

MATTHEW'S GOSPEL is longer than Mark's (28 chaptersagainst 1ft in Mark's Gospel). Matthew also wrote a quite dif-fereht Gospel: Even when ne uses Mark, he frequently editshim, providing a fresh application of the traditional material.Sp^rjyjwas thfeGospeJ pfj Matthew written? To come up with

ah answer, it needs to be realized that the Gospel do morethan supply information about Jesus. They interpret the infor-mation about Jesus for specific Christian communities, eachwith its own pfeoeupations and problems. '^ '..-.

Mark had applied the available material to the needs of hiscommunity, but Matthew's community was not the same asMark's. Its ba|ic makeup was different, and so was its situation,which brought fresh questions and fresh problems. \ •

Matthew's cpmmunity needed a new Gospel, therefore, onethat spoke rhdre directly to its concerns.

THE CAREFUL way the Gospel of. Matthew- is structured hasled to descriptions of it as a "catechetical instruction." Ap-parently there was a need in Matthew's community forcatechesis, for religious instruction. This catechesis wasnecessary for converts of different types, but it was necessary

also for established Christians, even those in positions ofleadership. All of Chapter 18, for example, is directed toleaders.

Other concerns had to be dealt with, too. For example, therewere those at the time Matthew's Gospel was written whoquestioned and challenged the Christians. The., desire of theChristians to defend their position seems to be one the reasonswhy the Gospel of Matthew was written.

These kinds of needs had to be met and this called for a newGospel, one that would keep the memory and the message ofjesus alive and relevant. Matthew's efforts to respond to theseparticular needs of his community give his Gospel a quitedistinctive air, , ' [ .

But there were other, even more fundamental factors whichinfluenced his recasting of the traditional material. These, too,we,musttakeinto consideration if.-we .are really to understandthis fascinating Gospel.

George Clements, communications manager forIBM in Atlanta, Ca., was a force behind "OperationHomecoming," an evangelization effort of StThomas Aquinas Parish in Alpharetta, Ca. In thefollowing interview, Clements talks about what theparish did to invite former Catholics back to thechurch.

Q. MR. CLEMENTS, WHY DO PEOPLE FIND IT DIF-FICULT TO TAKE PART IN EVANGELIZATION EF-FORTS?

A. I think most Catholics fee) religion is a privatematter. We don't feel comfortable talking aboutour belief in Christ. The typical person finds it hardto say, 'The Mass charges my batteries." And layCatholics have no tradition of going out to otherson a personal basis to discuss religion,

Q. WHAT DOES THE WORD "EVANGELIZATION"MEAN TO YOU?

A. As I see it, evangelization means that everyChristian is obligated to share the good news ofChrist's resurrection and our salvation with otherpeople. We can't keep it to ourselves. And thismeans every Christian, lay people and Religious, ofall ages and backgrounds.

For me, the bottom line in evangelization is first,to look inward, to ourselves, to make sure our ownfaith is strong - to figure out why we are Catholics.Then, to reach out in a friendly way, first to our ownfolk, the alienated Catholics.

I got involved with Operation Homecoming aftermaking a Cursillo (weekend retreat) because thepastor, a good friend, asked me to help in thesummer of 1977.

Q. COULD YOU EXPLAIN HOW YOU RECRUITPEOPLE TO EVANGELIZE OTHERS?

A. First, in our parish, we pound away at peopleon what.it means to be a Christian in homilies andin the bul!etin,,through parish leaders and commit-tee members. We remind people constantly of theobligation to share the faith.

Second, when we have five or 10 people ready tohelp, we show them how to evangelize., InHomecoming II, we turned to those who workedduring Homecoming I to explain what they did.

I always tell people the best kind ofevangelization is through simple conversation, oneon one. Begin with someone you know • talking toone neighbor or relative about your faith. I alsoremind people you, dortjt have to be experts onchurch nistpxy.|x|dui h^yffto be able to say, "I likebeing a CaffoJif^fOr^My-life is better" because ofmy parish and my religion.

Let me add, jt is probably easier to do this here in.he South. Be?ng;a Christian is a more open thingdown here;SqsJt|erB Baptists talk frankly about theirreligion. Many Protestant businessmen.have; (Biblestudy groups over the noon hour. Some of this fer-vor rubs off .or* Catholics.

Q. COULD YOU GIVE EXAMPLES OF AP-PROACHES YOU HAVE USED?

A. Well, I've been working with a friend who drif-ted away from the church many years ago, I mightsay to him: "Hey, Harry, I'll bet you've never seen aMass in English: Aren't you curious? Won't youcome with me to Mass next Sunday?'

Or, again, if someone is having trouble with hiskids, and has no spiritual anchoring in his life, I willtry to introduce him to someone at the parish whois good with strangers.

Or a person can say something like, "I'd like totalk to you for a while about my church." This

works best if you invite the person to some specialparish event, like a social hour or a seminar.

Q. DO YOU FIND IT EASY TO APPROACHPEOPLE?

A. It's never easy. I never feel totally comfortable.I always think, "Am I going to say the right thingr Iworry people will walk away from me. I usuallypray and have a knot in my stomach the wholetime.

But the success stories keep me going. For in-stance, the man who was away from the church for25 years and now comes to church at leastsometimes.

And then, I have to believe that I am plantingseeds. That my encouragement will bring someoneback later on if not now.

NEW YORK (NC) - Of all superheroes popularized by MarvelComics - Spiderman, the Hulk, the Submariner - the one whomade his debut in a comic book last October is one of themost unusual: St. Francis of Assisi.

The 50-page comic book, "Francis, Brother of the Universe,"Marvel Comic's first religious publication, based on the life ofthe 13th-century founder of trie Franciscan order, has been sowell received that both Marvel executives and church officialsare considering cooperating on more religious books.

"IT'S IN ITS SECOND printing," said Franciscan Father RoyGasnick, director of the Franciscan Communications Office inNew York and author of the comic book's scenario. "Theoriginal printing was 250,000 copies. The Paulist Press hasalready sold its 100,000 copies and has ordered 50,000 more.And MarveJ has sent out 150,000 in normal distribution and30,000 to their Collectors'Club."

with Paramount Pictures in publicizing Franco Zeffirelli's film,"Brother Sun, Sister Moon," with NBC News on its hour-longdocumentary in 1977, "St. Francis of Assisi: A Search for theMan and His Meaning," and with the off-Broadway musical,"Francis," in 1978.

HE SAID HE used Omer Englebert's "Life.of St. Francis," con-sidered to be the definitive biography of the saint, as a guidefor the scenario.

Father Gasnick said he wasn't too surprised at the comic'ssuccess. About 65 books a year are written on St. Francis, whoremains a powerful force in the contemporary society becausehe "was so complex a person that he touched many fields ofhuman endeavor," the Franciscan said."There was St. Francis the naturalist," he said, "the mystic,

-which attracts people of prayer; the personalist, who lookedupon people as individuals rather than part of a crowd; the ac-tivist, who created an order-model of what the church shouldbe like, based on small, caring communities; Francis the refor-mer; Francis the peacemaker, who tried to stop the killing ofboth sides during the Crusades; and the St. Francis who pur-posely identified himself with the poor and the oppressed."

Meanwhile, Marvel is developing a full-length animatedmovie about St. Francis and another publisher has approachedMarvel concerning the production of a St. Francis coloringbook.

I was standing in line with 300 people theother day to buy 3-cent stamps to go with my15-cent ones, when the rumor filtered downthe line that the post office actually is seriousabout instituting a nine-digit ZIP code.

"Good heavens," the man behind me grum-bled, "I've written letters shorter than that."

"Look at the positive side," his wife said. "Itmight force people to get to know each otheragain. They'd have major conversations justtrading ZIP codes."

"THAT IS, if they could remember them," Ismiled politely.

The 12-year-old standing on a skateboard infront of me did a 180. "No sweat," he said."You just memorize it in three segments ofthree digits each."

"You are talking to someone who has beenusing the same recipe for spaghetti sauce sincebefore Babe Ruth was a candy bar, youngman," I said, "and I still look it up. How could I

memorize nine digits?" 'The man who wrote short letters agreed. "-If

you're such a math wiz, kid," he said, "explainto me Why we need 999 million potentialnumbers when there are only 230 millionpeople in this country. Everyone of us couldnave three of our own private ZIP codes withthat many numbers."

"HOW WOULD I ever get a number like thatto fit into my address books?" I heard someonedown the line yell.

"I'm not going to wear a dog tag just for aZIP code," someone else said in a loud voice.

It was getting ugly. "Down with ZIP codes,"screamed a little old lady. The crowd roared itsapproval.

"Zip lists, not letters," a group further up theline started to chant. The skateboard Einsteincaught the spirit and painted a sign on his T-shirt: "Cancel codes, not stamps."

Rededicacion al EspirituSanto,Pide el Papa

Vaticano (NC) - El Santo Padrepidio a todas fas ConferenciasEpiscopales Catolicas del mun-do incluyendo los patriarcadosdel rito Catolico Oriental, en-viar uno o mas obsiposdelegados a Roma para los ser-vicros del Dfa de Pentecostes,Junio 7 de 1981 para "confiar alpoder del Espiritu Santo laIglesia y su mision entre lasnaciones de hoy y manana."

La invitacion estuvo con-tenida en una carta del Papa alos obispos que marca el 1600aniversario del Primer Conciliode Constantinopla, en el cualse difinio la Naturaleza Divinadel Espiritu Santo y el 1550 delConcilio de Efeso, queproclam6 la Divina Maternidadde la Virgen Marfa.

La carta de 21 paginasfechada en Marzo 27 pasado ydada a la publicidad el 31 delpropio mes, refuerza la impor-tancia de estos antiguos con-cilios para temas contem-poraneos tales como ecume-nismo, renovacion de la iglesiay la crisis de vocaciones.

"Estos grandiosos aniversariosno pueden permanecermeramente como recuerdosdel pasado para nosotros", dijoel Papa. "Deben refrescar lavida de fe de la Iglesia, deben,revitalizar su espiritualidad,ciertamente deben encontraruna manifestacion externa desu sempiterna relevancia parala comunidad de los creyentes".

El Papa declard que las cele-braciones en Roma, conceremonias en las Basilicas deSan Pedro y Santa Maria Mayor,permitiran a toda la Iglesiarenovar conjuntamente " laherencia que hemos recibidode la habitacion alta en Pen-tecostes en el poder del Espiri-tu Santo".

Unareciente decision de la Cortefederal del Distrito, prohibien-dole al centra de estudiosvotar en contra de que seorganize formalmente dichogrupo, ha beneficiado a los ho-mosexuales en sus esfuerzos yno hay mucho que podamoshacer para revocar la decision.

Sin embargo, opino que el ac-tuar de acuerdo con los deseosde mis electores al redactar lasnormas de este estado esmi deber constitucional.^Pueden Uds. imaginarse la pre-sencia de "clubs" '• dehomosexuales en su iglesia, suescuela," y el lugar donde Uds.trabajan? Para evitar esto in-troduje el proyecto de ley SB108 en Enero, haciendo i legalla formation de coaliciones ogrupos organizados de homo-sexuales en cualquier colegiode ensefianza superior (statecommunity college). Creo queen la forma en que he redac-tado el proyecto de ley SB 108,si su constitucionalidad esdisputada en las cortes, pasaratriunfante la prueba y podrallegar a ser ley.

Por lo tanto, lespido a Uds. que se pongan encontacto (por carta, per-sonalmente o ambos) no s6locon los senadores y represen-tantes de su distrito, sino tam-bien con los que son miembrosdel Comite de Education delSenado. Cuando SB 108 seaaprobada por el senado enpleno, pasara al comite deEducation de la Casa deRepresentantes; por estemotive encontrara la lista detodos esos legisladores al finalde este artfculo.
