1 GENERAL

SCOPE 1.1

Req. ID. Description Type Fulfilled Comment

C These technical requirements set requirements on the

Mine Warfare Data System (MWDS), the technical

command support system that forms the basis for MWDC

operations.

Info

C The MWDS will be of great significance to the results of

mine and explosive ordnance disposal operations in

maritime environments. Information will be obtainable,

processable, analysable, presentable, communicable, documentable and storable in times of peace, crisis and

war.

Info

C The MWDS shall be able to operate and support the naval

units during missions. However, the MWDS shall not

function solely towards a purely military organisation in an interoperations environment, but also towards

coordinated civil authorities and, where applicable, be

able to exchange information with and support other civilian organisations.

Info

C The objective of this document is to specify technical and

technical-related design requirements and the technical

measures that must be taken on systems and materials

provided. The document also describes the logistical requirements for the MWDS.

Info

DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS 1.2

Definitions 1.2.1

Mine warfare analysis is

divided into three

categories

Preoperational: from the information available, to create as true a

description as possible of the situation and conditions in the

mission area.

Operational: to evaluate the results and effectiveness of the

resources deployed in the area relative to the true situation and

assignment given.

Post operational: to analyse the mission quality of deployed units

and clearance methods as well as the search for technical and

tactical information and, in addition, to draw conclusions from the

enemy’s mine laying activities.

Mine evasion measures Measures taken to secure own and allied ships from damage caused by sea

mines, known or suspected to be laid, without action taken to dispose of

sea mines. This is normally conducted as a combination of tactical and

technical measures including military as well as civilian ships. Mine

evasion consists of three subcategories: Localising the threat, Localising

the minefield and Reducing the risk.

Minesweeping Minesweeping is defined either as the triggering of mines or mechanically

removing them. The triggering of mines may take place through vessel

simulation (TSM) or through signatures adapted for the purpose of

clearing a defined mine threat (MSM).

2 SYSTEMS DESCRIPTION, PRECONDITIONS

GENERAL 2.1

Req. ID. Description Type Fulfilled Comment

C

Naval mine clearance operations are aimed at

determining whether there are naval mines present in

ports, archipelagos and bodies of water near the coast.

Info

C

The objective is to eliminate or reduce the threat of naval

mines to ensure the safety of military maritime traffic, commercial shipping and fishing.

Info

C

Naval mine clearance comprises minesweeping, mine

hunting and EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal). Info

C

The Swedish Navy has mechanical mine sweep systems on

board mine-clearance vessels such as the Koster class,

for sweeping anchored naval mines.

Info

C

To handle influence mines, the Swedish Navy has a

remote-controlled influence mine sweep system named SAM (remote controlled acoustic and magnetic mine

sweep). The SAM system can be operated from corvettes

such as the Visby class, mine-clearance vessels such as the Koster class and mine clearance diver vessels such as

the Spåro class.

Info

C

The Swedish Navy has mine-hunting systems on board

corvettes such as the Visby class, mine-clearance vessels

such as the Koster class and mine clearance diver vessels such as the Spåro class. The vessels use sonar systems to

detect and classify objects on the seafloor or in the water.

There are also systems on board for identification and disposal of naval mines.

Info

C For special missions when the vessels cannot handle the

naval mine threat, the Swedish Navy has EOD groups.

EOD groups have sonar systems for detection and

classification. The identification and disposal of naval mines is carried out by EOD divers or by means of

ROVs/AUVs.
