☩ GATHERING ☩

The Holy Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens, and makes holy the Christian Church when we together for worship. The gathering includes a time of spiritual preparation for this sacred time of worship. The Prelude is intended for meditation and reflection. The Confession and Absolution remind us of our need for God, for the saving work of Christ, and of our baptism into the holy community to which we belong. We respond to the good news of Jesus Christ with hymns of praise and a gracious welcome into the presence of the Lord. PRELUDE CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS We stand. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins:

In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The presiding minister invites us to prepare for worship: With humble hearts, we prepare for worship by seeking reconciliation with God and neighbor, let us remember the gift of baptism and confess our sin. We may kneel or stand. Silence is kept for reflection. Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

The presiding minister announces God’s forgiveness: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the

name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. We stand. The service continues with a gathering hymn. GATHERING SONG

ELW HYMN #787 On Eagle's Wings (VV. 1 & 2 ) 1. You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in this shadow for life,

Say to the Lord: “My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!” Refrain: And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn,

make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand.

2. The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear; under God’s wings your refuge, with faithfulness your shield. Refrain

ELW HYMN #396 Spirit of Gentleness (vv. 1 & 4) Refrain: Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness

calling and free, Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.

1. You moved on the waters, you called to the deep,

then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep; and over the eons you called to each thing: “Awake from your slumbers and arise on your wings.” Refrain

2. You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes. From the bondage of sorrow all the captives dream dreams; our women see visions, our men clear their eyes. With bold new decisions your people arise.

GREETING The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. CANTICLE OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY The presiding minister leads the Prayer of the Day. This prayer concludes the gathering time and prepares us for the main themes of the day which are heard from the Word of God in Scripture, preaching, and music. Let us pray. Silence is kept for reflection. O God, you resist those who are proud and give grace to those who are humble. Give us the humility of your Son, that we may embody the generosity of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. We sit.

☩ WORD ☩

The Word of God is the Living Word incarnate in Jesus Christ, who now comes to us through Holy Scripture. Reading God’s Word from Holy Scripture recalls the saving, redemptive story of God unfolding through history, climaxing in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we now participate in this ongoing story. Preaching proclaims the Gospel anew and applies the Word to our present situation and future aspirations. In response to the Word proclaimed, we sing hymn that unite our voices together, we confess the Creed as a statement of our faith, and we first engage our faith when we enter a time of intercessory prayer for the needs of the church and world. FIRST READING: The lector announces the reading: A reading from Proverbs. 6Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence or stand in the place of the great; 7for it is better to be told, “Come up here,” than to be put lower in the presence of a noble. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. We respond: Thanks be to God. PSALM The psalm may be sung or recited. The lector announces the psalm: We recite Psalm 112 responsively by whole verse. 1Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the LORD and have great delight in God’s commandments! 2Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3Wealth and riches will be in their house, and their righteousness will last forever. 4Light shines in the darkness for the upright; the righteous are merciful and full of compassion. (continues to next page)

5It is good for them to be generous in lending and to manage their affairs with justice. 6For they will never be shaken; the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance. 7They will not be afraid of any evil rumors; their heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. 8Their heart is established and will not shrink, until they see their desire upon their enemies. 9They have given freely to the poor, and their righteousness stands fast forever; they will hold up their head with honor. 10The wicked will see it and be angry; they will gnash their teeth and pine away; the desires of the wicked will perish. SECOND READING: The lector announces the reading: A reading from Hebrews. 1Let mutual love continue. 2Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. 3Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. 4Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. 5Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” 6So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?” 7Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 15Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. We respond: Thanks be to God.

We stand to welcome the gospel. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: The gospel is announced. The holy gospel according to St Luke, the 14th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 1On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. 7When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. 8“When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; 9and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” 12He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” The gospel concludes: The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON We sit. Silence for reflection follows the sermon. The Hymn of the Day is the proclaim the main theme of God’s Word in song. HYMN OF THE DAY ELW #608 Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling ELW #773 Precious Lord, Take My Hand CREED The Creed is rooted in baptism, in response to hearing and believing the Word of God. Trinitarian and scriptural, it is a summary of our faith. The Apostles’ Creed, used at baptism, is normally confessed on Sundays in Lent, the season of renewal and baptismal preparation, as well as Time after Epiphany and Time after Pentecost. The Nicene Creed, a more formal version, is used on festivals and during the seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Easter. The presiding minister invites to recite the Creed together: With the whole church, let us confess our faith: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

The presiding minister invites us into prayer: With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation. We may sit or kneel. After each petition, we respond: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The presiding minister concludes the prayers: Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. PEACE The presiding minister greets the assembly, then we in turn greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. And also with you. We greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace with, “Peace be with you,” or similar words. The peace concludes and we sit.

☩ MEAL ☩ The presence of Jesus Christ comes to the assembly. Baptized into his life, death, and resurrection, the meal Jesus offered his disciples is the same meal at which we now gather. The bread and wine are the Body and Blood of our Lord, and in this gracious gift, we receive forgiveness of sin, everlasting life, and a foretaste of the great heavenly banquet to come when the Lord Jesus returns in all fullness. OFFERING Money, music, and other gifts are offered as signs of our gratitude for God entrusting us with the stewardship of our time, talent, and possessions. An offering of music provides with a time of meditation and preparation for the Sacrament of Holy Communion. OFFERTORY MUSIC Benedictus Gordon Young (1919-98) OFFERTORY RESPONSE ELW #679 For the Fruit of All Creation For the fruit of all creation, thanks be to God. For these gifts to ev'ry nation, thanks be to God. For the plowing, sowing, reaping, silent growth while we are sleeping, future needs in earth's safe keeping, thanks be to God. OFFERING PRAYER The offering is presented, and the table is set. The presiding minister leads us in prayer: Let us pray. God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING Dialogue The presiding minister greets the assembly and invites us to give thanks.

Preface The presiding minister continues: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful Father, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Sanctus

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE The presiding minister continues: Wonderous are your deeds, gracious Father, and mighty are your acts. You fashioned

all of life and created humankind in your image. Though we fell into fear and despair, you did not abandon us, but sent your Son, our

Lord Jesus, born of a woman, to take human tribulation to the cross, thereby redeeming us and claiming us as your own, bring to us a holy comfort and joy.

In the night in which He was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my Body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Again, after supper, He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my Blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. As we now celebrate our Lord’s presence, send your Holy Spirit on us, and on this Bread

of Life and Cup of Salvation, that we who receive our Lord’s true body and blood in this holy communion may be filled with the peace and grace that comes from the forgiveness of our sins, and the promise of life and salvation.

Through Him, with Him, and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory are yours Almighty Father, now and forever.

Amen. LORD’S PRAYER The presiding minister may introduce the Lord’s Prayer. Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION The presiding minister may address the assembly in these or similar words. This is the Bread of Life that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Lord, give us this bread always. The assembly may be seated. The bread is broken for the distribution.

DISTRIBUTION All baptized Christians are invited to participate in the Meal. The method of distribution is intinction. Come forward to the altar, kneel or stand and open your hands to receive the bread. Dip the bread into the wine and consume. Those with dietary concerns are assured of the Lord’s presence in element alone, and you may consume accordingly. If you are a parent who’s child has not received instruction, or you are unbaptized or from a faith tradition of which you cannot commune, you may come forward with your arms folded across your chest and receive a blessing. When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say: The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond: Amen. We return to our seats for prayer and meditation. COMMUNION MUSIC

Hymnody and other music may accompany the communion. The Distribution is complete when all present have communed. We stand. TABLE BLESSING The Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in God’s grace. Amen. HYMN AFTER COMMUNION

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION The assisting minister leads one of the following or a similar prayer after communion. Let us pray. Gracious God, in this meal you have drawn us to your heart and nourished us at your table with food and drink, the body and blood of Christ. Now send us forth to be your people in the world, and to proclaim your truth this day and evermore, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
