anised a two-day Inter-national Conference onRecent Advances inEducational Psychol-ogy on March 15th &16th, 2018.

The objectives ofthe conference are toacquaint individualswith the advancementand emerging trends ineducational psychologyas well as to address thecritical issues pertain-ing to this field.

Mr. Conrad K.Sangma, Chief Minis-ter, Meghalaya inaugu-rated the conference inhis capacity as the chiefguest. In his speech,Mr. Sangma said he hasa long association withNEHU right from hislate father’s time andhas always been tryingto take up the educa-tion sector forward.He termed the theme asinteresting and apt forhis government rightnow. He also informedthat his government hasstarted the process ofputting up an education

policy in place. “We aretrying to get it out fast,”he said while lamentingthe fact that even afterfour decades of state-hood, Meghalaya is yetto have an educationpolicy in place. “This isone of the priority ar-eas for us and educa-tion in general is some-thing the governmentwill definitely be givinga lot of importancetoo,” he added.

Commenting onthe theme of confer-ence, Mr. Sangma saidthe sole idea of educa-

tional psychology issomething that shouldhave been looked atfrom the beginning.“It’s never too late butwe realize how impor-tant this aspect is. Ev-ery human being isunique and I think it isthat basic line that saysit all”, he said. “Weneed different aspectsof education and differ-ent areas of concern arethere when we look atevery child or humanbeing. Therefore edu-cational psychologyplays a very important

In his welcomespeech, Dr. SaurabhKumar Dixit, STH-MCON-2018 chair, in-formed about the mainthemes of the confer-ence. During the inau-gural session, the con-ference proceedingsalong with the ISBNnumber were also re-leased in both e-bookand paperback form.

The STHMCON-

2018 was divided intosix technical sessionsand two plenary ses-sions covering the dif-ferent dimensions ofthe sustainable tourismand hospitality market-ing. During the techni-cal sessions differentpresentations weremade by scholars tohighlight different as-pects of sustainablehospitality and tourismmarketing. The confer-ence was attended bymore than 150 del-egates coming fromdifferent parts of Indiaand globe. In total,there were 90 presen-tations made during thesix technical sessions.

The first plenarysession was held on

March 15 where twopresentations weremade. Titled Embrac-ing Sustainability forDestination Competi-tive Advantage, thepresentation was deliv-ered by Prof. JenniferChan Kim Lian, Profes-sor of Tourism andHospitality Manage-ment, Director -BorneoTourism Research Cen-tre, Faculty of Busi-ness, Economics andAccountancy, Univer-sity Malaysia Sabah.The second presenta-tion on Value Gap be-tween SustainableTourism and Marketingwas given by Prof.Manjula Chaudhary,

same time ensuring thateach one is happy aswell as productive atthe end of the day.” Hehoped that the pro-gramme is a successand that the govern-ment can incorporatesome of the ideas gen-erated into thegovernment’s policyalso.

The chief ministeralso said that the edu-cation system in thestate is facing a lot ofchallenges. “We talk ofprimary schools in thevillages where most ofthem do not haveschool buildings. Weface a lot of challengesas a large chunk of ourfunds go into payingsalaries for teachersand we actually do nothave capital expendi-ture into building therequired infrastructure.We are trying to find away forward. I can as-sure of our commit-ment to education be-cause we know thateducation can changethe future. We are allstakeholders in the areaof education.

“It starts fromteachers to students,parents, governmentofficials, politicians andit is only when we havea concerted effort thenwe can find a way for-ward and see that jump

in education that weneed so badly in ourstate. I'm hoping that itwill happen.”

Mr. Sangma alsotook the opportunity toshare some of histhoughts and ideas ongovernment policywhether its agriculture,youth and sports, edu-cation or tourism.“These are all very im-portant sectors for us.We are very focused oninfrastructure, we wantroads, bridges as wellas power, water supply,these are areas of bigconcerns for us. Bigconstraints ahead of usbut I think with the fo-cus and with the goodteam that we have, Ihope we will be able tomove forward. Thereare funds for a lot ofthings and I want toensure that every rupeewe spent has to be pro-ductive. There must beaccountability of themoney that we spentand what we spent on."

Commenting onthe Look East policy,the chief minister saidit's a very important as-pect of his government.“Because our state hasa very long border withBangladesh, almost480 kilometers, it's agreat opportunity forMeghalaya. It is veryimportant to have an

Act South policy. Weneed to look south andI think that if a goodpolicy and a frameworkcan be there in place,trade and tourism canimprove. I think we cansee a great change inthings and that wouldbe one of the objectivesof our governmentalso.”

Concluding hisspeech, Mr. Sangmasaid NEHU has a lot ofresources and thinktank, ideas that his gov-ernment is trying as faras possible to incorpo-rate. “We want to dis-cuss with you and weknow you have a lot tooffer. We will requireyour inputs and ideasand we definitely wel-come those ideas. Weknow you have done alot of research on thenortheast and Meg-halaya especially, andthat will help the gov-ernment to come upwith better policies sothat we can do a betterwork for our people.We definitely want towork with NEHU, notonly on education buton policy making also.I hope the associationwill continue withNEHU.”

ties to hold activitiesthat promote the lin-guistic diversity in thecountry.

In NEHU, a pro-gramme highlightingthe linguistic diversityin the country and theusage of mother tongueand other languages aswell was held on Feb-ruary 21 at the VC con-ference Hall which wasattended by ProfessorS.K.
