EDITORIALPositive news oneconomic front

The weather has its seasons and so do economicforecasts. The latest round, coming on the backof a Chinese economic slowdown, beats the drumof optimism and India’s potential of regaining theworld’s fastest growing economy tag. If thescorecard from the World Bank to the IMF toprivate forecasts place the FY22 growth rate at aconservative 9.5% and thereabouts, the govern-ment believes it’s about to crack double digits onthe year. If that happens, the achievement will bepraiseworthy and efforts must focus on thawingnational output not to its pre-pandemic levels, butto pre-slowdown state and lower unemploymentrate—which shot up to frightening levels owingto the Covid-19 pandemic.Forecasts peg India to be at the start of a largecapex cycle, which can ensure a sustained realGDP growth of 7% in the medium-term. Severalfactors appear to be contributing to this belief, including rising exports and robust tax collec-tions. The government initiatives such as assetmonetisation and the recent privatisation driveraised hopes of disinvestment proceeds pickingup steam. While bank credit growth remains aconcern, the resolving bad loan situation is com-forting. While booming corporate profits arewelcome, private investments are still sore andso is capacity utilisation. Yet, some like MorganStanley expect that a virtuous cycle is in the off-ing, supported by strong capex. This cycle, theybelieve, will be unlike the past decade and morelike the one seen during 2003-07, allowing stronggrowth rates while keeping macro stability risksat bay.Rising capex lifts employment and boosts incomeand consumption, creating a virtuous cycle. Butuntil private sector investment picks up, the gov-ernment must continue holding the spending ba-ton. States too must weigh in and increase ex-penditure, particularly on healthcare and educa-tion. All said, the risks to the positive sentimentfrom external factors cannot be completelyavoided or escaped. Be it in the form of US in-terest rate hikes and capital outflows or volatil-ity in crude, energy and commodity prices cancause an upheaval and knock down India’s growthstory once again.

Will you be part of positive change?Okay! Go die!” That wasone of the comments on myvideo where I spoke abouthow I had come down withcovid and I chose to remainunvaccinated. As a celeb-rity I’m used to beingtrolled. It pretty muchcomes with the turf and Icertainly don’t take it per-sonally, because in theworld of healing we believethat only what is within youis what you spew out-wards. You can only sharewhat you possess. What Idid stop and ponder aboutwas about the level of bile, intolerance, insensitivity, simmering anger, and lackof respect for democracyand personal freedom thatseems to be on the rise. How have we become sohypersensitive as a peoplethat our lives have becomecentred around fault find-ing, a persecution complexand hating people for hav-ing a good life. Religiondoesn’t divide people, people divide people.Wealth and success don’tdivide people, people di-vide each other based onnegative attitudes of “rich v/s middle class”. Coviddoesn’t divide people, people divide people basedon their fears and miscon-ceptions. All of these are

excuses used by many tofeel right about hating. Howunfortunate! To live in aworld of prejudice, angst, and self-defeating belief sys-tems only adds to a collec-tive growing mindset of un-happiness. Mental health istruly the one commodity thatis the most precious in thesetesting times. So manydon’t even realise all theirnegativity and viciousnessare symptoms of mental

malaise. It’s hard to stare itin the face. Not manypeople can look at them-selves long and hard in themirror and say they like whothey have become. In thevarious counselling sessionsand workshops that I haveconducted over the pastcouple of years I have somany break down and sim-ply weep. The helplessness, the negativity, the fear, thenot knowing, the uncer-tainty of everything makesthem realise they have pol-luted their own minds andhearts with so much unnec-essary evil. People attackinnocents, children, celeb-rities, family, “anti-vaxxers”, minorities and somuch more. A deep need

Spreading vaxawareness in TN

The National Committee on Serious Adverse EventsFollowing Immunisation (AEFI) has concluded that thedeath of Vivekh—a popular actor in Tamil Nadu andonce one of the faces of the state’s Covid-19 vaccina-tion campaign—two days after he took the jab in Aprilwas coincidental. The committee has ruled that the offi-cial medical reason for the 59-year-old’s death was ablockage of the heart and it had nothing to do with theCovaxin shot that he had taken. What created a messfor the state was that his vaccination had taken place ina televised event attended by several dignitaries, includ-ing the state’s health secretary. His death soon after hadled to several conspiracy theories and social media cam-paigns against vaccination. The news comes as a big relief for Tamil Nadu’s vacci-nation drive. That fact is that despite several efforts bythe government, it is yet to pick up pace. While Indiacelebrates the completion of 100 crore doses, the vac-cine hesitancy among the urban poor and the rural com-munity continues to be a reality in the state. As the fearof the third wave has nearly vanished, a feeling of beingsafe and complacent with one dose is palpable. On theflip side, the fear of side effects has kept many farmersand daily-wage workers off the needle as the farmingseason is underway. Despite mega vaccination camps,74% of its adult population is yet to go for the secondjab. The state lags behind the national average (29%)and all other South Indian states. The government isrightly focusing on those who are yet to receive theirsecond dose after the mandatory three-month gap fol-lowing the first one. According to TN’s health ministerMa Subramanian, as many as 57 lakh people are duefor the second dose. The state has managed to administer the first dose to73% of its eligible population, marginally better than thenational average of 70%. But this is much lower thanthe numbers lapped up by its southern counterparts. For TN, there is a long way to go and the governmentneeds to pull out all the stops

for Acceptance, forgive-ness, letting go, rebuildingtrust with the universe, sending out apologies (notnecessarily vocal) to thosethey have harmed are alldeep and necessary heal-ing processes. I will re-cover from Covid in a fewdays, but how long will ittake the haters and deathwishers to clean theirminds and hearts and getemotionally and mentally

well? We need to start ahashtag #PositivityStartsNow and post it onevery cruel comment andill intent we see on socialmedia. By healing others,we heal ourselves. Wedon’t want a blanket ofnegativity to envelope usall. Let’s start collectivepositive change, today.#PositivityStartsNow1. I have seen inBollywood there are mul-tiple couples with huge agedifferences. Most of thetime they seem happy –like Arjun Kapoor andMalaika Arora or Saif AliKhan and KareenaKapoor Khan. Actually Ireally like a guy who ismuch younger than me.

We have a nine- year agedifference. We are not afilmy couple. Is this okay –because we are just a nor-mal, middle class couple.Parents of course don’tknow about the age gap.Do you feel that this rela-tionship will not work?A relationship is dependenton 2 human beings connect-ing with each other. Race, religion, age, geography etcare all just social demarca-tions for “us” vs “others”.You have to only ask your-self how sensitive you are towhat family, society andfriends think. Because theirconditioning will be to makeyou uncomfortable about itand if you’re the type to suc-cumb to pressure and seekthe approval of others thenit’s best to choose anotherpartner. 2. I’m 32, marriedto a good man for nineyears. We have been happy. No kids yet. Recently I meta 30 year old woman in myworkplace. She is a lesbianand never hides that. She isa great friend and sometimesflirts with me too. Lately Ithink I have developed feel-ings for her. I do love myhusband but I get a highwhen I am with this girl. What should I do? Sheknows I’m married but hasrealised my feelings for her

Pooja Bedi

and of course she recipro-cates them too. Whatshould I do? Whether youare attracted to a man or awoman, your commitmentto your marriage needs tobe your focus and priority.Cheating is the easiest thing.Living with the guilt, the be-trayal, the breakdown oftrust or a divorce is emo-tionally and personally costlyand definitely not worth flir-tation and a temporary high. This is about your value sys-tem as the devil does it’sdance. Choose wisely. 3.There is one really nice guywho has moved into the flatopposite mine. I feel stronglyattracted to him. I am a 25-year-old man. While hedoes seem to flirt and givecovert glances wheneverwe meet, I do not knowwhether he is actuallygay. How should I ap-proach him? Ask him outfor a drink and get toknow him better. Casu-ally throw in past relation-ships as a topic to ascer-tain his preference and ingeneral gauge commonareas of interest andcompatibility. Even if he’snot inclined towards asexual relationship, hemay have the potential tobe a great friend. Whychoose? Let it flow.

Embrace your weirdness!

Vinita Dawra Nangia

While the world savorsuniqueness and is attractedby non-conformists, haveyou tried to uncover yourown brand of weird? If you go by its dictionarymeaning, ‘weird’ has super-natural, unearthly connota-tions. For the longest time,to be weird was to bestrange and abnormal.People would shun weird-ness. No longer so. Todayto be different is good; tobe strange is better, and tobe weird is highly attractive!Weird is the new attractive, the new exciting. Such is theflexibility of language and thefickleness of human choice. However, there is nothingnew about our attraction tothe offbeat, weird, strange,or eccentric. The novelty isthat we are now owning thatattraction. Weirdness hasbeen the greatest asset ofsome of our most popular, iconic figures. All greats inliterature, music, cinema, theatre, or art have beennon-conformists. It is theuniqueness reflected in theirwork that fascinates theworld even centuries afterthey are no more.It is unlikely that theseicons imagined themselvesas ‘strange’ or ‘weird,’even if the world did so.They were just beingthemselves! In a sea ofnormalcy, the few differ-ent ones will automaticallyarouse curiosity and standout. The difference is thatwhile some are naturallyweird or different, someothers deliberately culti-vate those differences toattract attention. A case inpoint of a naturally weirdperson adopting weirderhabits would be the verytalented but hugely bro-ken Michael Jackson.Grand gestures and culti-

vated weirdness are pos-sibly the preserve of therich and already famous. Not all of us can — norneed to — take such ex-treme measures. The factremains that novelty ishighly valued, and we areattracted to anyone who isbold enough to live andportray his/her own indi-vidual personality. In agroup of people al ldressed similarly, the eyewill always be drawn tothe one dressed different. That is also the reason forcyclical changes in fashionand styles. We all get tiredof seeing sameness, andthen the few who dare to

go against the trend, natu-rally attract us, and are re-sponsible for setting newtrends – long skirt/shortskirt , hirsute/clean-shaven, flares/tapered,etc. Enough of the quirksand weirdness of celebri-ties and trends. The pointis to understand how canwe possibly embrace ourown inner weirdness? For,if we are to define weird-ness as being ‘different’,then we are all weird inour own way, because notwo persons in the worldcan be the exact same byvirtue of our unique geno-type and the impact of ourenvironment on thosegenes. So, if the worldloves non-conformists andwierdos, how best can wechannel our own weird-ness to be attractive andstand out as different? Forsometimes the only way tostand out is to stand away— isolated, different, unique, weird… OscarWilde understood this

when he said, “Neverlove anybody who treatsyou like you are normal.”So true. We all deserveto be cherished for ourown brand of unique, weird, or different. AndWilde’s words, “Be your-self. Everyone else is al-ready taken” is the bestadvice anyone can giveon embracing youruniqueness. As we growin years and the enddraws inexorably near, the most important ques-tion we will ask ourselveswill be, “Was I different, and did I make a differ-ence?” Consider how sadit would be if the answer

to this were, “You werejust like the others – andso, forgettable.” We allwant to be rememberedwith love and wish toleave behind a legacy.Such a legacy cannotcome by being like every-one else. The only way tobe memorable is bydrawing out your ownuniqueness, embracing itand allowing the world toconnect with it.Be yourself, no matterhow the world tries tochange you and make youconform. If you find yourself one ofmany in looks, thought, ideas, frame of mind –pause and know that youare doing somethingwrong. Look desperatelyfor your difference andadopt it. So, what is yourbrand of weird? Remem-ber if it is what makes yourdifferent, it is probablywhat will make you memo-rable too. For this weird-ness is your strength!

Bhagwad Gita’s advice onbuilding better ties

The relationships we form are vital to our mental and emo-tional wellbeing. We have an inborn desire to connect withpeople. But as our lifestyles become more reliant on digitaltools, these simple interactions are under threat. We have relationships at various levels – professional, so-cial and family. Work isn’t just about the paycheque. It’sabout meeting like-minded people, sharing ideas and work-ing towards common goals. A happy family life is the foun-dation on which our personality develops. Sharing and form-ing ties at family get-togethers create bonds that give us asense of belonging. Communities help individuals cope withthe stress, struggle and chaos of modern life. However, inmodern times relationships are breaking at an alarming rate. The joint family system is vanishing. Today, the nuclear familyis the norm. Single parenthood is increasing. Organisationsare experiencing high-attrition rates and people do not evenknow their neighbours. This is because of increasing self-ishness and lack of self-sufficiency. As a result you be-come dependent. There are expectations from the otherperson, you make demands, and when these are not metwith, there is conflict and bitterness. This is called attach-ment. When the person is around, you argue and fight. When the person is absent you miss him. Attachment breedssuffering and eventually the relationship breaks down.Onceyou develop inner strength and grow spiritually, you nolonger need to lean on people. You establish wonderfulrelationships with them. You love them for what they arewith no strings attached. And they, in turn, adore you. Thisis pure love or detachment. How do you get detached?Get attached to something higher and the lower attach-ment wanes away. Feel for the larger community, nation, all beings, and finally God. Devotion to God has no mean-ing unless you love all beings. In the Bhagwad Gita, Krishngives 35 qualities of a devotee. The very first trait is ‘onewho hates no being’. Devotion is not about professing loveto God, it is the ability to love one’s fellow beings. TheGita says there are no adversaries out there. Your worstfoes are within. Question your beliefs and prejudices. Re-visit your convictions. And you will realise the enemies yousaw everywhere are your friends. You will view even wrong-doers with compassion. And embrace the whole world witha feeling of oneness. Enlarge your circle of love. When youidentify with the body you see maximum differences. Alignwith the mind and you feel one with the family. Stretch tothe intellect and your circle of oneness includes the entirenation. In the end, understand the Spirit as the commonchord that holds the whole universe. You feel one with allbeings. And cease to feel hatred or revulsion towards any-body. This is devotion. Then Krishn loves you whetheryou love him or not. He declares that such a person isexceedingly dear to him. Where do you begin? With thepeople you dislike most. Change your attitude towardsthem. Look at things from their perspective. There is in-stant relief! You feel happy. And grow spiritually. This helpsmore than any prayers, visits to temples, or pilgrimages.

Karwa ChauthKarwa Chauth will be observed today on Sunday, October 24. It is a

significant festival for Hindu women in India and is celebrated widelyacross north Indian states like Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh

and Punjab.

Women adorn themselves in new clothes and‘solah shringar’ and perform Karwa Chauthpuja for a happy and blissful marriage. On thisday, women observe a day-long nirjala fast, which means they avoid consuming water orfood between sunrise and sunset on this day.The origin of Karwa Chauth can be traced backto Mahabharata when Savitri begged the godof death, Lord Yama, for her husband’s soul.Another episode in the epic talks aboutPandavas and their wife Draupadi. It is saidthat Arjuna went to the Nilgiris to pray andmeditate for a few days, worried about hissafety Draupadi sought her brother Krishna’shelp. He advised her to observe a strict fastjust like Goddess Parvati did for her husbandShiva’s safety. Draupadi adhered to it, andsoon Arjuna returned home safely. On this day, married women observe a nirjalavrat (fasting without water). They also pray fora healthy, prosperous, and long life for theirhusbands. Women worship Karva Mata, LordShiva, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya onthis day and take a sankalpa (pledge) to ob-serve the vrat with utmost devotion and sin-cerity. Additionally, women begin their fast fromsunrise and don’t consume even a drop ofwater, let alone food, until they see the moon.

Fasting women also apply henna to their hands anddeck up in make-up, clothes and jewellery.Though, popular culture has told us that during KarvaChauth, women fast throughout the day and deck upin beautiful clothes and jewellery. The actual tradi-tions vary in each state. For instance, in Uttar Pradeshand Rajasthan, women pass pots called karvas amongthemselves, seeing the moon’s reflection in the wateror through a sieve. After this, they offer water to themoon and then drink water from their husband’shands. Women then break their fast and eat.

After Oil, Gas Price May See SurgeUpsetting CNG, PNG RatesNew Delhi: After fuelprice surge, prices of gasused for cooking andtransportation are ex-pected to soar this yearputting consumers in In-dia at the risk of inflatedCNG and PNG rates.Asper an assessment of gasmarket done by ICICISecurities, prices in gasfutures market is esti-mated to rise by US$4.1/mmbtu to US $7.35/mmbtu in H1FY23 andby another US$3.6/mmbtu (49 per cent) toUS $10.95/mmbtu inH2FY23.This wouldmean that three mainplayers supplying CNGand PNG — Green Gas(GGL), Mahanagar Gas

(MGL) and IndraprasthaGas (IGL) would need tohike CNG prices by 50-56 per cent in April-Oc-tober, 2022 to fully passon APM gas price rise tokeep their margins at loftylevels. APM gas pricewas at US $2.3-3.8/mmbtu in FY17-FY22and bottomed out at US$2/mmbtu in H1FY22. Itis up US $1.22/mmbtu(62 per cent) to US$3.22/mmbtu inH2FY22. What is inter-esting is that gas suppli-ers to CNG and PNGmarkets have made loftymargins in the pandemicperiod due to non revi-sion of piped naturalgas and compressed

natural gas prices dur-ing the inadequacy whenthe cereal gas prices hadfallen globally due to de-mand compression andlockdowns. SinceQ2FY20, gas cost fallfor CNG is Rs 5.7/scmvs Rs 1.3-2.2/scmCNG price cut by GGL,MGL and IGL. Hence, their margin was up 21-84 per cent (Rs 1.4-4.0/scm) to Rs 7.9-13.9/scm in Q1FY22 from Rs4.3-9.9/scm inQ2FY20. In fact, CGDmargins are up 44-130per cent since FY14, and21-84 per cent sinceDecember, 2019 as gascost fall has not beenpassed on.
