CONGRATULATIONS to our 2019 Cover Competition Winners

First: Tracy Loubser Second: Adele du Preez Third: Bruce Paterson

And, in a heartbeat, the clichéd New Year countdown ended and 2020 began!

My new year’s resolution is to remember to write 2020 instead of 2019. I found myself turning lots of 8’s into 9’s for the first couple of months last year. Although I am convinced it is more of an unconscious habitual phenomenon rather than anything to do with age.

I trust this year presents abundant opportunities to soak up and revel in our many blessings.

May 2020 shine!

Thank you, Featherbrooke! You helped make a BIG differenceOne of the highlights on the Featherbrooke social calendar (for me) is the end of year Appreciation Function in honour of the loyal staff that keep Featherbrooke as amazing as it is to live in. If I could just describe the gratitude on the smiley faces of the dear folk who take care of our beautiful gardens, security, refuse removal and cleaning when we gifted them with an envelope of cash from kind donations by residents.

With additional generous contributions, we were able to pack a shopping bag of groceries for each person. The FHA also provided each person with a delicious boerie roll that Jessica’s kindly cooked to absolute perfection.

At the November meeting, it was an honour to be one of the judges. The images were fantastic. Well done, FBiF, on your growth as photographers – it’s a pleasure to witness.

Bruce Paterson’s image, Hippo Snack, blew us out of the water. Forgive the pun. This watchful subject was captured perfectly as he wallowed down the Chobe River, with his mouthful of breakfast. The backlighting enhances the little droplets that cling to his hairs and dance off his skin into the glimmering early light, while Bruce’s relevant use of the aperture softens the background and foreground of the image, muting it into a perfect milky stage that showcases the texture and wonder of this African semi-aquatic subject. Textures pop, revealing his hairy snout, tough skin, and the whirls of water that surround his movement. The colours are subtle and pleasing. Well-deserved COM, Bruce.

Mimie Jordaan took the set subject ‘SIFIMG – Stuff I Found In My Garage’ and created art with her image, Garage Gold. The way she placed the frames off-center and not in a uniform manner, adds to the creative value of the image. The blue wall compliments the warm yellowy gold of the frames, while the lines and patterns add another dimension

Garage Gold by Mimie Jordaan

of interest. The crop is tight and uncomplicated, embracing the focus of the subject with the golden frame. The plastic protection wrap also adds texture and design, as the lighting lends to the drama dynamic of the scene. Brilliant artistic flair you have, Mimie. Very well done.

Indoor air pollution can make you feel sluggish, tired and run down. The solution is simple and beautiful. Indoor plants!

Feeling under the weather? It’s been proven that indoor air quality is generally much poorer than that of the outdoors. Not only are VOCs generally more concentrated indoors, but CO2 levels are much higher, especially when there are many people inhabiting a space. All you need to do is add a decent amount of indoor plants to your space. The more the better. Here’s why:

Indoor plants improve wellbeingCertain types of indoor plants have been proven to reduce levels of CO2 and increase relative humidity. Less CO2 means less stale air, and because plants release O2, more fresh air. The humidifying effect of indoor plants prevents eye, nose and throat irritation, and even has a positive effect on the general health of the lungs. And not only are there physical benefits of indoor plants, but emotional ones too. So, refresh your living space with life-giving plant energy!

Natural air purifiersThere are many gorgeous plant varieties to choose from for purifying (and beautifying) your indoor space. Bamboo Palms, Aloe Vera and Mother-in-law’s Tongue make great indoor plants as they absorb toxins and harmful particles, giving you cleaner and fresher air. And for increased humidity, English Ivy and Peace Lilies are good options as they release water through their stems and leaves, which evaporates into the air.

Time management is really all about managing yourself. You can't really “manage” time because there are 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour, 60 seconds in a minute — and that never changes. However, you can control where and how you spend your time and take actions to reduce or eliminate time wasters. Here are ten timeless ways to take control of your schedule each day to make the most of the time you have available.

1. Establish Prioritized GoalsWithout goals, you might find that you tend to chase after whatever seems most urgent or is staring you in the face. It's tough not to get distracted by shiny objects. To prevent this, figure out your true your priorities in life, and move toward them by setting yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals or desired outcomes. Rank each of these using the following system:

• Importance: (A=high, B=medium, C=low)

• Urgency: (1=high, 2=medium, 3=low)

Always work on the most urgent and important goals and tasks (A1) first, and then move on down your list.

2. Follow the 80/20 RuleThe 80/20 Rule, also known as Pareto’s Principle, says that 80 percent of your results come from 20 percent of your actions. It’s a way to view your time usage, prioritize your chosen tasks against your most important goals. Are you focusing in on the 20 percent of activities that produce 80 percent of your desired results?

3. Learn to Say NoWhile it’s great to be a team player, it’s also important to know when and how to be assertive and let people know you can’t handle their request at the moment if it conflicts with you achieving your goals. If you do agree to take on the task, negotiate a deadline that helps them achieve their goals without sacrificing your own.

4. Overcome Procrastination Using the 4D System• Delete it: What are the consequences of not doing the task at all?

Consider the 80/20 rule; maybe it doesn’t need to be done in the first place.

• Delegate it: If the task is important, ask yourself if it’s really something that you are responsible for doing in the first place. Can the task be given to someone else?

• Do it now: Postponing an important task that needs to be done only creates feelings of anxiety and stress. Do it as early in the day as you can.

• Defer: If the task is one that can’t be completed quickly and is not a high priority item, simply defer it.

5. Eat the FrogTo quote Brian Tracey from his book, "Eat That Frog,"

"If the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that that is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long."

Your frogs each day are the tasks that will have the greatest impact on achieving your goals, which are usually the tasks that you're most likely to procrastinate starting.

6. Reduce the Number of Meetings Poorly run meetings are time wasters, multiplied by the number of people in the meeting. Make sure you have an agenda and you aren't just having a meeting for the sake of having a meeting.

7. The Glass Jar: Rocks, Pebbles, SandCategorize your work in this way:

• Rocks: Your most important strategic projects

• Pebbles: Projects and tasks that are important but not the most critical

• Sand: Smaller, more insignificant tasks

Tackle the rocks first. If you keep tackling the small things (the sand and pebbles), and not the important strategic items, the rocks, then your jar will quickly fill up with no room for more rocks.

8. Eliminate Electronic Time WastersEveryone has certain distractions that interrupt them and take their time away from their work. Is yours Facebook? Twitter? Email checking? Continuous messaging with friends and family? Stop checking them so often and start batching these types of activities. Set a time, then check and deal with all of them at once. Give yourself 30 minutes and then get back on task.

9. Get Organized In order to effectively manage your time and be productive each day, you have to create the right environment. Eliminate useless clutter, set up an effective filing system, have a nearby place for all of the work items you need frequently, and utilize workflow management tools to help you create a productive environment.

10. Take Care of Your HealthA good night’s sleep, healthy eating, and exercise will give you the energy, focus, and stamina required to make the most out of your day. It may seem that work is more important and you can always catch up on sleep, food, and exercise later. If you lose your health, though, you can't work, or do much of anything else for that matter, so don't skimp on taking care of yourself.

In most instances the holiday season and celebrations have forced one to overconsume on every front. It was not for a lack of trying that you did not want to overeat or over consume certain substances that may not have been beneficial to you, it most likely the way it just is during the festive season.

The stress, the unwinding, the trying to let your hair down a little while getting ready for the new year. That is if you were already thinking about 2020. So if we do strive for a year that is more fruitful than the year prior, what should we do?

First step is to determine where you are in respect of your health. Not looking at the outside only, whether carrying excess weight, very muscular, slender or just average, we never know what is brewing on the inside. Nutritional deficiencies show up in the blood in various forms.

To be in the know with your body you need to consider a form of bloods tests that paint a picture that we understand. Not the blood tests you have done on a visit to a medical practitioner, but rather a few that are specific to your health. The correct blood profile can determine current and future health risk indicators. Nutritional markers determine deficiencies that impact every aspect of your health from weight gain to sleeping well to cognitive performance and much more.

If you are serious about knowing how you are wired internally, you could then consider a DNA test. The DNA test is not the ancestory testing, but rather determining whether your genes are low, medium or high risk to current and future disease, energy output, skin conditions and much more. Where you identify impaired genes, you then have the tools available to support them. When you do not know, you continue as normal which in many instances brings about the diseased state, lack of energy, impaired detoxification of the 2,1 million toxins we are said to take in daily. Just detoxification impairment is problematic on so many fronts.

Over the holiday season you could have experienced various bouts of bloating, headache, fatigue, diarrhea, irritable bowel and other gastroenterology and dermatology

related symptoms. If this is you, you may also include a food intolerance test that will highlight what foods are not well-tolerated in your body. Knowing this could help determine which foods are causing your weight gain, skin condition or gut health issues.

Your goal for 2020?Weight loss. improved mental state, muscle gain, improved sporting performance, reducing cancer and cardiovascular risks or just finding your right road to being the best kind of healthy you’ve ever been.

The longer I have spent in health and seeking the ideal method and steps to being well, having endless amounts of energy and preventing disease in my own future years, I find myself sifting though a complex assortment of scientific information and marketing hype.

To be well, we need to keep it simple. Sleep 7.3 hours each night, eat a balance of all the colours of the various fruit and vegeatables, drink a ton of clean water and move your body in the form of moderate exercise.

What does eating well entail when looking at it from the science of food? Our first tip would be if seeking optimal health, or balancing the foods you should not be consuming as much, we need to look to the family of cruciferous vegeatables and the cleaners in the fruit world.

As cruciferous vegetable intake increases, breast, lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers decrease accordingly. Similar associations linking total vegetable intake to lower cancer incidence have been noted, but cruciferous vegetables are far more potent and have a more profound association in the scientific literature.

• Cruciferous vegetables are twice as powerful as other plant foods. In population studies, a 20 percent increase in plant food intake generally corresponds to a 20 percent decrease in cancer rates, but a 20 percent increase in cruciferous vegetable intake corresponds to a 40 percent decrease in cancer rates.

• Twenty-eight servings of vegetables per week decreases prostate cancer risk by 33 percent, but just three servings of cruciferous vegetables per week decreases prostate cancer risk by 41 percent.

• One or more servings of cabbage per week reduces the occurrence of pancreatic cancer by 38 percent.

Maximizing the Benefits of Cruciferous Vegetables - chopping, chewing, blending, and juicing all allow for enhanced production of ITCs. Some nutrients are lost with boiling or steaming. So we get the maximum benefit from eating cruciferous vegetables raw.

The best way to extract the most nutrients from your vegetable is to blend, crush, chop, or juice the greens while they’re raw and then put the blended or chopped greens into a stew or soup to cook, you will still have those functioning and beneficial ITCs present after cooking.

To maximize the immune-function benefits of cruciferous vegetables, do the following:

1. Chew all cruciferous greens very, very well, trying to crush every cell.

2. Puree, blend, or chop cruciferous vegetables before adding them to stews or soups.

3. When steaming green cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage, try to undercook slightly so they are not too mushy.

Cruciferous vegetables are not only the most powerful anticancer foods in existence; they are also the most micronutrient-dense of all vegetables. These amazing vegetables are: Arugula, Bok choy, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Collards, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Mustard greens, Radishes, Red cabbage, Turnip greens, Watercress.

So make 2020 the beginning of a lifelong journey to learn how to improve your health, one step at a time.
