Module 6—Lab 1

Objectives After completing this lab, you should be able to configure quality of service (QoS) features on the ProCurve Wireless Edge Services zl Module.

Requirements For this lab, you and your partner need the following:

One ProCurve Wireless Edge Services zl Module

One ProCurve Switch 5400zl Series

One ProCurve Radio Port (RP): RP 210, RP 220, or RP 230

One serial cable (5184-1894)

Three unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables

One Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP Pro with the following components:

• TFTP server such as Tftpd32

• Console terminal software such as Tera Term

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or above (or equivalent) with support for Java applets

• Video-streaming server such as VLC Media Player

• Video file

• Traffic generator such as TfGen

One laptop that has a wireless network interface card (NIC) and is running:

• Microsoft Windows XP or 2000 and Service Pack 2 for Windows XP or Service Pack 3 for Windows 2000

• Windows Wireless Zero Configuration client utility (hereafter referred to as the Windows wireless utility)

• Traffic generator such as TfGen

• Video-streaming client such as VLC Media Player

Special Instructions This lab demonstrates one way to configure QoS on the Wireless Module.

In this lab, you will simulate a network with converged traffic. You will connect your Windows XP station to the PCU-x WLAN. The wireless station will receive two types of traffic from the Windows Server 2003—normal data traffic and time-sensitive multimedia traffic. You will use a traffic generator to generate the data traffic. A video stream between the Windows Server 2003 and the station will simulate the time-sensitive multimedia traffic.

You will first simulate a network that does not provide QoS. Next, you will next configure your Switch 5400zl to assign a higher priority to the video traffic. You will then configure the Wireless Module to use WMM to grant the high-priority traffic better QoS.

In the Mobility labs, the devices should be configured to use the following IP addresses.

Replace x with the number your instructor assigned you and your partner.

Initial Setup Checklist Complete the following setup steps:

Power up the 5400zl Switch.

Power up the Windows Server 2003 and connect it to port A1 on the 5400zl Switch.

Verify that the Windows Server 2003 is using the correct IP settings:

IP address: 10.x.10.10

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 10.x.10.1

Replace x with the number your instructor assigned you and your partner.

You can verify the server’s IP settings by accessing the command prompt and typing ipconfig.

Verify that the 5400zl Switch is running the configuration for the Mobility labs.

Power up the Windows XP or 2000 laptop with the wireless NIC. If you are using an add-on wireless NIC, ensure that it is inserted into the laptop.

Connect an RP to port A4 on the 5400zl Switch.

Task 1: Assess Performance in a Network Without QoS

In this task, you will simulate a network that does not provide QoS; the infrastructure devices have not been configured to prioritize the video traffic.

Note Ensure that the RP is the only wireless device that is connected to the switch. If the station connects to the AP 530, you will not see the difference in QoS when you configure WMM on the Wireless Module.

1. Connect your Windows XP station to the PCU-x WLAN. If prompted to enter your credentials, type the login credentials that you created for a user on the Wireless Module in Module 4—Configuring WLAN Security.

2. Access the command prompt for the station and type ipconfig to view the IP address that is assigned to this laptop.

3. On the Windows Server 2003, start the TfGen traffic generator. Then complete these steps:

a. Under Option, select Destination. Type the IP address that has been assigned to the station and click OK. (This station should have an IP address on the 10.x.8.0/24 subnet or the 10.x.24.0/24 subnet, depending on whether you logged in as a faculty member or as a student.)

b. Click OK.

c. Under Option, select Utilization. You should set the utilization to approximately 5000 Kbps.

d. Click OK.

e. Click Start.

4. On the Windows XP station, start the TfGen traffic generator. Then, complete these steps:

a. Under Option, select Destination. Type the IP address of the Windows Server 2003 and click OK.

b. Under Option, select Utilization. You should set the utilization to approximately 7000 Kbps.

c. Click OK.

d. Click Start.

5. On the Windows Server 2003, start a videostream to the station. Open the VLC Media Player and then follow these steps to start a video stream:

a. Under File, select Wizard.

b. Select Stream to Network and click Next.

c. In the Input window, make sure the Select a stream option is selected and click Choose.

d. Select Browse, navigate to the video file stored on the Windows Server 2003, and select the file.

e. Click Open.

f. In the Open window, click OK.

g. In the Input window, click Next.

h. Select RTP Unicast. Type the IP address of the Windows XP station.

i. Click Next

j. Accept the default encapsulation and click Next.

k. For Time-To-Live, type 15.

l. Click Finish.

m. Loop the file so that it plays continuously. Under View, select Playlist.

n. Click the button in the top bar for Repeat One.

6. On the Windows XP station, open the VLC Media Player and follow these steps to configure it as a video client:

a. Under File, select Open Network Stream.

b. Select UDP/RTP.

c. For Port, keep the default: 1234.

d. Click OK.

The video file should begin to play on the station.

7. What is the quality of the video?

Does the video break up? Y/N

If the video is not experiencing lays or breakups, increase the utilization in the traffic generators.

8. Keep the traffic generators and the video running.

Task 2: Configure the Switch to Mark the Video Stream for High Priority

In this task, you will configure your Switch 5400zl to mark traffic that is destined to UDP port 1234 (the port used by the video stream) with an 802.1p value of 7. The switch will mark traffic destined to UDP port 7 (the port used by TfGen) with an 802.1p value of 1. Note that these values are selected for the purposes of illustrating QoS in this lab.

1. On the Windows XP station, use TeraTerm to open a terminal session to the Switch 5400zl.

2. Move to the global configuration mode context.

3. Enter this command to mark the video stream for high-priority handling: ProCurve Switch(config)# qos udp-port 1234 priority 7

4. Enter this command to mark the TfGen traffic for low-priority: ProCurve Switch(config)# qos udp-port 7 priority 1

5. Save the configuration.

Task 3: Enable WMM on the Wireless Module

In this task, you will enable WMM for the PCU-x WLAN. The Wireless Module when then use 802.1p values to select traffic for better QoS. Because you configured a high 802.1p value for video traffic, the Wireless Module will now prioritize the video traffic over the traffic produced by the traffic generator.

1. On the Window Server 2003, open a Web browser interface management session with the Wireless Module.

2. Select Network Setup > WLAN Setup and click the Configuration tab.

3. Select the PCU-x WLAN and click the Edit button. The Edit window is displayed.

4. For Access Category under Advanced, select Automatic/WMM.

5. Click OK.

6. Click Save in the upper right corner of the window.

Task 4: View the Effects of Enabling QoS

On the Windows XP station, look for signs of improvement to the video quality. Be patient; it might take a minute or two for the prioritization to take effect.
