MECALAC LAUNCHES OPERATIONS IN THE AMERICASKey U.S. target markets for Mecalac machines are urban job sites that require space management and versatility in the building, construction, civil engineering (pipe, electrical, cable laying) and landscaping sectors. In the goal of moving into both North and South America, Groupe Mecalac has created a holding company based in the U.S.: Mecalac Americas LLC. Groupe Mecalac Vice President Alexandre Marchetta envisions an “organic” approach to expanding distribution throughout the Americas. “We will gradually introduce more products when markets are ready and opportunities arise. We foresee a mix of current and new distributors depending on market conditions.”

Acting on the desire to broaden the company’s range of products, distribution reach and industrial know-how, Mecalac acquired the Terex production facility in Coventry, England in December 2016, it becomes Mecalac Construction Equipment UK Ltd. This unit manufacturers a full range of high-tech backhoe loaders, site dumpers formerly sold under the Fermec and Benford brands, it also includes compaction rollers. This purchase will expand Mecalac’s range of compact equipment designed for urban settings to include machines for more massive work sites often found in the Americas.

In the U.S. the distribution of the backhoe loaders and site dumpers designed and manufactured in the UK will continue. Marchetta emphasizes, “We believe in

building on the past and intend to support the sales and service network already established. Mecalac wants to send the message loud and clear that we are a family-owned business dedicated to maintaining relationships and deeply committed to the quality and stability of our products.”

Responding to a great deal of interest from U.S. contractors across the ocean, Mecalac launched distribution in the U.S. in February 2016 by signing a cooperation with Massachusetts-based Lorusso Heavy Equipment (LHE). LHE will distribute loaders and excavators in, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. LHE will market MCR Crawler Skid-Excavators, AX and AF Wheel Loaders and, later this year, the new MWR Wheeled Excavator.

A NEW EQUATION BUZZING IN THE HALLS OF CONEXPO-CON/AGG THIS YEAR: “1 + 1 = 3”. This equation sums up the guiding principle of Mecalac, the award-winning manufacturer of compact excavators and loaders based in Annecy-le-Vieux, France. Mecalac Marketing Manager Patrick Brehmer stresses, “Ours is a very different approach from other manufactures who are focused on individual products. At Mecalac, we are process-oriented and are driven by a job site approach, not a product approach.”

Why process-oriented? “Because” explains Brehmer, “we are interested in changing the way work gets accomplished and making the job site safer. We start

by analyzing the entire job site where safety, comfort, usability and ultimately cost-efficiency and profitability for the contractor are all important criteria. This methodology creates new architecture that is changing the game from all standpoints.”

Case in point: the MCR Crawler Skid-Excavator being demonstrated on Mecalac’s booth at CONEXPO. The MCR is in fact two hyper-performing machines in one: a skid steer and an excavator, fortified with a telehandler equipped with a unique versatile boom. Both hydraulic and electronic technologies are applied, transforming the user interface. This machine is faster, safer, smarter, leaner and more powerful than any of its competition - 150% loader, 150% excavator – it can do more than the sum of the 2 machines with a single operator… 1 + 1 = 3. By providing one machine to do multiple jobs, the Job Site Manager has more freedom, more possibilities, less need for manual work, a safer and easier work environment. “This is how we achieve process innovation,” Brehmer explains.

This new gateway to the American market prompted Mecalac to exhibit for the first time at CONEXPO 2017 in Las Vegas, March 7-11, 2017. They will display nine machines on their Booth S6439 in the Silver 3 Outdoor Area. Mecalac models include the 6-, 8- and 10- ton MCR Crawler Excavators, the 9- and 15- ton MWR Wheeled Excavators, the AX 850 Wheel Loader and the AF1200 Wheel Loader. Terex models include the 6- ton TA6S site dumper and the TLB840R Backhoe Loader. The 6MCR will be demonstrated.

AWARD-WINNING TECHNOLOGYInnovation is one of the pillars of Mecalac’s strategic foundation. The company has earned numerous patents, design and innovation awards in France and Germany. In particular, they introduced the CONNECT® quick coupling system and the Kinematics boom, now standard features on their product range.

As AJ Lorusso puts it, the Mecalac MCR Crawler Skid-Excavator “is light years ahead of anything on the U.S. market today”. President of Massachusetts-based Lorusso Heavy Equipment (LHE), Lorusso had been watching videos online of the European machine for five years. He was riveted by how this unique and highly versatile piece of equipment had changed the way contractors excavated and moved material in Europe. It demonstrated multi-functionality like he had never seen before and he claims, “this machine had no weaknesses.” Then he saw the MCR at bauma in Germany before he finally got in touch with the right person at Mecalac France in January 2016. Lorusso recounts that “everything clicked” with Mecalac principals. Within a month, LHE launched sales of the Mecalac all-terrain high-speed MCR skid excavator in New England.

The MCR is in fact two high-performance machines in one: a skid steer and an excavator, fortified with a telehandler equipped with a unique versatile boom. It goes 2-3 times faster than any other mini-excavator on the market (6.2 mph); it can rotate 360° while carrying 40% of its own weight and it offers a 360° view to its operator. Its boom can lift and load materials to a height up to 16 ft.; it folds to 131 degrees for maximum stability and lifting performance. Its CONNECT® quick coupling system allows switching attachments in seconds, and auxiliary hydraulics enable standard

hydraulic attachments. Above all, it responds perfectly to the industry trend toward tighter urban spaces with its compact radius and small footprint. The MCR Crawler Skid-Excavator is in fact the perfect realization of Mecalac’s highly innovative process-oriented philosophy (as opposed to other product-oriented manufacturers). By virtue of the extensive range of jobs it can perform, the MCR transforms the way work is performed on the job site. Its multi-function ability reduces the number of machines, the number of man-hours and the amount of fuel required, greatly facilitating the Job Site Manager’s job. Its ergonomic architecture and ease of operation result in less on-the-job injuries and a smoother work flow. It has proven to hold the highest utilization rate in its class, achieving 700-800 hours per year as opposed to its competition at 500 hours per year.

Lorusso projects that MCR sales will represent 50% of his equipment business by the end of 2017. His customers in building, public works and landscaping are putting it to work on small excavation projects, septic system installation, site work, driveway and utility work. He believes the 6 and 8 ton models will sell the most. He adds, “Mecalac is bringing very very innovative products to the U.S. market; they will lower the cost of equipment ownership for our customers.”

03. Backhoe Loaders focus

Following its acquisition of the Terex Coventry plant’s compact construction business in December 2016, Mecalac is featuring the new Terex TLB840R backhoe loader on their booth at CONEXPO in Las Vegas, March 7-11, 2017. Mecalac Vice President Alexandre Marchetta sees the Terex backhoe loader line as a valuable addition to the Mecalac portfolio that clearly responds to a need in the U.S. market. “We are breaking new ground with this Terex range of versatile, innovative and efficient backhoe loaders. This line represents a tremendous opportunity for Mecalac to become a bigger presence in the U.S. market. The Mecalac group is 100% committed to standing behind this exceptional line of machines and ensuring a smooth transition that will work for customers and distributors alike.”

Designed to increase productivity and profitability, the Terex backhoe loaders are powerful workhorses armed with a host of new features aimed at enhancing comfort, reducing driver fatigue and aiding productivity. Each model features a curved boom design for outstanding reach and dig depth. The operator is afforded maximum comfort with ergonomically designed controls, climate control and a lumbar-supporting suspension seat. Service points are conveniently positioned within easy reach of ground level.

The new TLB840R backhoe loader is in the spotlight on the Mecalac booth at CONEXPO. This machine delivers what the rental channel demands – versatile,

dependable machinery that yields a high return on investment.

Configured to meet the rental market’s need for a high-performance backhoe with a low acquisition cost, the competitively priced TLB840R backhoe loader is designed to give rental business owners a more immediate return on investment without sacrificing performance or quality. The TLB840R backhoe loader is equipped with a powerful 74-hp, Tier 4 final 4-cyclinder Deutz electronic fuel injection diesel engine, a 4-speed synchro shuttle transmission and a robust hydraulic system to excel at digging, reaching, lifting and loading tasks. The engine, transmission, and hydraulic systems have all been designed for easy maintenance by rental company technicians and mechanics.

The design of the TLB840R resulted from taking a good hard look at the needs of the rental customers so it is configured specifically for the market. With the growth forecast for the North American rental industry continuing to be encouraging well into 2017, it was an opportune time to poll the customers in the rental community to gain a better understanding of the market’s specific needs and to know how to help them be more competitive. Because rental rates are driven by equipment acquisition costs and utilization, the company focused on a product that would be competitively priced without sacrificing the quality and features the company’s backhoe products are known for, at a price point that drives return on investment for the customers.

WHEELED EXCAVATORSMECALAC CREATES NEW ARCHITECTURE FOR WHEELED EXCAVATORSWheeled excavators are at the heart of Mecalac’s business activity, and the company has established itself as a major player in this market through its fundamentally distinctive machine ranges. At Mecalac, we believe that industrial offers of vehicles for construction and public works need to have innovation at their core, which is why we constantly strive to find new, practical solutions for construction sites.

Using the solid strategy of observing its customers’ work and construction sites, Mecalac has been able to identify an area for improvement for wheeled excavators: their stability. The very architecture of this type of vehicle, connected to an oscillating axle under the undercarriage and an upper carriage, gives it an intrinsically higher center of gravity. This results in a lack of stability which leads to discomfort and insecurity. On top of this, the inconvenient height of the cab means that the operator is forced to adopt unnatural, sometimes even hazardous, positions. In addition, the position of the diesel tank in the upper part is not ideal for using a refueling system.

It is these three key issues of stability, accessibility and refueling that Mecalac is tackling with its new wheeled excavator concept: the MWR range.

SOLUTIONS FOR THE USERLowering the center of gravity has proved to be the key. There is nothing more stable than a telescopic vehicle, as it must be inherently stable in order to carry out its main role: handling loads in motion. One of the techniques used to guarantee maximum safety is the installation of the cab as low as possible between the wheels. The design process therefore drifted naturally towards the distinctive architecture of this machine. The solution was found in the fusion of a telescopic loader and a wheeled excavator.

Rather than add new solutions to its existing wheeled excavator ranges, Mecalac’s designers decided to create a new concept: a combination of the rotation of a wheeled excavator and the stability of a telescopic handling vehicle. All the components in the upper carriage have been lowered as much as possible, and the shapes of the upper carriage and undercarriage have been completely redesigned around the oscillation of the wheels. The goal was to fit the upper carriage as low as possible between the wheels while still retaining its full rotation, essential development criteria for improving the dynamic stability of the future Mecalac excavator. With the announcement of Mecalac’s MWR range, a new standard of lifting stability and performance has been born.

04. product OVERVIEW

WORLD PREMIERe: MWR

9MWR.jPG

“Design is a key element in the identity of this Mecalac product. It is not just a matter of aesthetics but also of functionality, safety, and ergonomics. It is common knowledge that buying a machine has as much to do with its appearance and cab comfort as its performance. Beauty sells...”

Henri Marchetta, Chairman and Managing Director, Groupe Mecalac S.A.

13PRESS NOTE mecalac

One of the main design aims was to create an iconic vehicle whose functions are clearly manifested in a cohesive and balanced architecture. The continuity of the lines and the tension of the surfaces give the machine a unique dynamism which fully showcases its mobility and stability. The high level of attention to detail and the shrewd use of new components and technologies have enabled us to make significant progress in the domain of vehicles for construction and public works. This coveted stability can be clearly seen in the shape of the machine, where the rotating upper carriage is solidly integrated into the undercarriage. The continuity of the lines between the upper and lower parts showcases this integration by “anchoring” the machine to the ground. A PRACTICAL DESIGNDiesel refueling: Drivers fill the diesel tank on a daily basis. Thanks to a new swivel joint which is essential to maintaining full rotation, the tank, traditionally positioned on the upper carriage, has been integrated into the lower undercarriage, between the wheels. At shoulder-height, using the refueling system is simple, quick and safe. Without a diesel pump, this is a unique advantage from Mecalac.

There are also many different maintenance operations that the driver must carry out to guarantee the machine’s performance and longevity. The mechanisms

in question, such as the engine and hydraulic pumps, which have been lowered as much as possible in line with the new architecture, are now accessible from the ground without the operator having to climb into the machine and putting himself or the technician at risk. Operations can now be carried out efficiently and easily.

Cab accessibility: The height drivers must climb to access the driver’s compartment in the MWR machines has been reduced. The two handrails, left and right, can be gripped without drivers needing to twist their arms or wrists. Climbing down has also been designed ergonomically, as the feet fall naturally into position on the steps, with no risk of slipping. All problems linked to driver’s compartment access, such as falls, fractures, and muscle problems, are significantly reduced by this new architecture designed specifically to ensure the comfort and safety of users.

Dynamic stability: The shape of the machine itself is a clear display of its stability, as its upper carriage is fully inserted in the undercarriage. This lowered center of gravity helps to naturally anchor the machine towards the ground. Horizontal travel, including load handling, showcases the perfect balance of this new Mecalac wheeled excavator. The user interface has also been completely redesigned. With just one selector on the dashboard, the operator has the

15MWR.jPG

simple choice between one of three functions: park, work, or drive. The entire machine, complete with its oscillating axle, engine speed control and lights, adapts automatically to the selected sequence. Man and machine maneuver in perfect safety, day-to-day tasks are handled easily, and site performance and productivity are guaranteed.

A SOLID DESIGN STRATEGYMecalac excavators operate in urban and peri-urban environments, and their modern architecture blends in with their surroundings. Their innovative and distinctive design contributes to the visual identity of the brand.

Beyond the challenge, producing architectural excellence directly through innovation is an integral part of Mecalac’s DNA. The new Mecalac wheeled excavator has not only become a practical, efficient and profitable work tool, but stands out from the competition thanks to its design which fits seamlessly into the urban environment.

The MWR from Mecalac, was awarded the Bauma Innovation Award 2016 in Germany.

World premierThe 9MWR (9 ton) and the 15MWR (15 ton) models are available in this new range. They are premiering at CONEXPO 2017, Las Vegas.

12MTX The 12MTX, 2016 version, a 9.7 to machine equipped with an 80kW engine, offers various improvements for even better ergonomics, safety, flexibility, functionality, and reactivity.

A single selector – a unique Mecalac feature – enables the 12MTX to change configuration instantly. With an obviously simple gesture the driver sets the controls to those of an excavator or a loader - with all its functions combined and “ready for use”. Equally easy it can be put into parking or driving mode. At the flick of a wrist a construction site will benefit from increasedresponsiveness, safety and thus profitability.

Getting in and out of the cab is one major reason for many on-site accidents. In 2016 it is no longer suitable that drivers are climbing onto wheels and slipping. Now there is a new patented solution from Mecalac, which comes as a standard on the 12MTX. A step is automatically driven out when the operator raises the console to leave the cab.

The 12MTX from Mecalac, received an “Etoile du Design” award from the French Minister of Economy, Design, Industry and Information Technology on December 9, 2014.

switching stages selectable jolt-free under load allow for an optimum adaption to the work situation while helping optimize the fuel consumption. The additional MDrive function lets you allocate the hand throttle and the inching speed to the pedal and to individually set the inching speed. This significantly simplifies working with hydraulically operated attachments such as asphalt milling tool, mower, grader, plate compactor, or sweeper. The AS 1600 was specially designed for use in building, canalization and cable laying, track construction, agriculture and road construction.

WHEEL LOADERSAX 700The new Mecalac AX series wins over with its robust-ness, low running costs, ease of operation, simplified maintenance and, last but not least, a sleek design. All loaders are equipped with the latest stage III B Deutz turbo diesel engines. The articulated AX 700 with a bucket volume of 0.7-1.2 m³ is an efficient machine for every rental fleet. With a height of 2.47 m and a bucket width of 1.60 m, the AX 700 is ideal for con-fined construction sites. A highlight of the machine is the temperature-dependent hydraulic fan control. It ensures the lowest noise emission and minimal fuel consumption. The main areas of application for the AX700 are rental fleets, gardening and landscaping, and construction.

AX 850Whether it is used as a professional rental machine or for moderately difficult construction sites, the Monoboom appeals with its outstanding visibility. The quick-coupler, compatible with other brands, provides a high safety standard with the standard electrohydraulic interlock. The intelligent engine and traction drive concept of the AX series, a central multifunction display, the Mecalac MDrive function

and the evaluation of machine data via the Mecadiag diagnostic system all work to noticeably facilitate daily work. The spacious operator’s cabin (Mecalac Panorama Cab) with ergonomic operating elements is a further characteristic of the AX series. The articulated AX850, featuring a bucket capacity of 0.85-1.5 m³, was designed for rental fleets, gardening and landscaping, and construction.

AX 1000Featuring a bucket capacity of 1.0-1.6 m³, the professional machine for difficult construction sites comes through strong due to its powerful Z-Kinematics® with two lift cylinders. Precise parallel adjustment, high break-out forces and short duty cycles are the main characteristics of the newly developed, patented Kinematics®. The self-stabilizing articulated pendulum joint is another outstanding product feature of the entire AX series in addition to the lockable axles (100%). This is used to perfect the driving properties and to increase stability. Like all AX machines, the AX 1000 is available with the longer Highlift boom, e.g. for loading 3 or 4 axle trucks with high sides. The machines thus have a maximum load over height of 3300 mm. Compared to its predecessor, the new AX1000 has received a significant power boost: a thrust force increase by 8% to 4100 daN makes the loader much more agile. The main areas of application for the AX 1000 are rental fleets, gardening and landscaping, construction, and recycling.

When loading with Boost, the unique Kinematics® amplifies the lifting force by 17%. The Mecalac Four Wheel Drive with automatic steering adjustment ensures maximum stability and maneuverability. An intelligent cooling concept allows the cleaning intervals of the cooler to be prolonged. The hydrostatic fan drive ensures optimum, temperature–controlled cooling power. This reduces both fuel consumption and noise emissions. The standard electro hydraulic quick-coupler is compatible with a large range of third-party attachments. The AF1200 has been designed for application in building, road construction, gardening and landscaping, and recycling.
