EMS ANNUAL REPORT 2020-20212

As I reflect on the past year, I feel immense pride in all we accomplished together. While many other schools were unable to resume in-person education until this fall, EMS met the challenges of

the pandemic head-on, working creatively and collaboratively to stay open safely, while continuing to progress our strategic plan. This would not have been possible without the support and dedication of so many families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends across our remarkable community.

I would like to thank my fellow members of the Board of Trustees who, with their engagement, generosity, and leadership, ensure that our school stays true to our mission and vision as we continue to chart our course for our future. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express our gratitude to the EMS community members who serve on our Medical and Dental Advisory Committee and generously share their expertise and time to help us navigate a safe path forward. I would also like to recognize the leadership of former Head of School Dr. Maureen Fonseca, who, along with a dedicated administrative team, faculty, and staff, helped steer us through this incredibly challenging time.

As we emerge from the school’s 90th year, my fellow Board members and I feel a renewed sense of energy and excitement. We welcomed Dr. Marek Beck as our eighth Head of School in July of 2021. Within a few months, Marek and his leadership team have sought out and are delivering best-in-class opportunities to EMS, ensuring that our school remains at the forefront of new ideas in education and able to deliver a transformative student experience. Our students learn from teachers and projects that are wholly unique to EMS, with the continuing goal of developing our students into the curious scholars, ethical leaders, and global citizens of the future.

We have already started enhancements across the campus and curriculum under Marek’s leadership. Among these is an innovative STEAM partnership with NuVu, an initiative to engage students in multidisciplinary, real-world topics as they work collaboratively on self-driven projects. NuVu has been introduced in Morrow House and will extend across all divisions in the next few years. We also completed physical upgrades to our library teaching space, several classrooms, and the Morrow House lobby. We’ve additionally taken steps to strengthen our work around Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Belonging (DEIB).

The Apple Tree Fund continues to flourish through your participation and gifts. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank our donors and volunteers for being passionate about our school and giving so generously of their time and resources in service to all our students. Your active engagement helps us keep EMS thriving and preparing our students for a bright future. We look forward to your continued support and to a promising 2021–2022 school year ahead!

Warmly,

Dear Families, Alumni, and Friends,

Hanita Walia, President, Board of Trustees

EMS ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021 3

I’d like to thank you for your support and generosity over the past year, to say that it’s been outstanding that you rallied to support us like never before — but that wouldn’t be the

full story.Based on all that I’ve seen and experienced

since joining EMS last January, I am convinced that what is “above and beyond” for any other school is the standard of our community. How can anyone new to the EMS family be unmoved by the heartfelt adoption of the 4 C’s — Courtesy, Consideration, Cooperation, and Compassion — throughout our entire community of students, families, faculty, staff, and alumni?

When you combine this driven, intelligent, and idealistic group of individuals with a mission such as ours, you have a rarely-reproducible formula for real and meaningful change in our world. While success for each of our graduates reflects their own interests and motivations, success for our community is the continued fulfillment of our mission, to educate and inspire our students to grow into curious scholars, ethical leaders, and global citizens.

Every year, we rely on our donors to help us extend our ambitions and support for our students, faculty, and staff just a bit further. With your contributions to the Apple Tree Fund — our unrestricted annual fund, which we use to address our most pressing needs — you help ensure that our teachers can continue to inspire, uplift, and transform our students through education. Every student benefits from contributions made to the Apple Tree Fund and capital fund, as well as the income earned from our endowment.

Already this school year, our donors have enabled us to make great strides in our offerings. My leadership team and I have many exciting plans underway, including:

• Further elevating our innovative, hands-on STEAM programming (at the intersection of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) in Morrow House with enhancements we will extend throughout all divisions;

• Piloting personalized learning time (PLT) in Morrow House, allowing students to dive deeply into a topic of great interest, with research and

project guidance from our faculty and staff;

• Establishing a rigorous computer science program;

• Upgrading Morrow House, particularly the seventh- and eighth-grade wing;

• Creating a new curriculum of innovative design-thinking and applied science;

• Expanding opportunities for direct communication between parents, educators, division heads, newly appointed Associate Head of School Amelia Gold, and myself;

• Introducing “MAP” assessments (or Measures of Academic Progress) to gather data that allow us to further personalize learning;

• Exploring one of the key drivers in our five-year strategic plan, sustainability, and what steps we must take to not only achieve environmental certification but become environmental leaders in the region;

• And many enhancements yet to come.

We are able to pursue these efforts because of our donors, and our annual report is one way we humbly say thank you and recognize each donor by name. This past year, we surpassed our goal for raising unrestricted funds due to the outstanding generosity garnered from our 90th Anniversary Gala and Auction and our GivingTuesday Campaign, both record-breaking efforts.

Your continued care and annual participation have helped make possible all that EMS is today, and your continued support will be the catalyst for all that it will become. I cannot wait to see what we accomplish together through our shared energy and investment in our future.

With best regards,

To Our EMS Community,

Dr. Marek Beck, Head of School

EMS ANNUAL REPORT 2020-20214

Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure enrich the life of every child and

every teacher every single day. Thanks to your support,

our students had an amazing year! I heard them discuss difficult math problems, shout encouragement at Field Day and Activity Day, debate science theories with each other, laugh joyfully at Kindergarten Circus, and play beautifully at the 25th Anniversary Summer String Festival. Our students learned through facing academic challenges and navigated interpersonal relationships, guided by our community’s core values. They continued along their journey toward becoming curious scholars, ethical leaders, and global citizens.

This year, many of you gave your first gift, touched by gratitude. Graduates spoke warmly of their experiences and the influence their years at EMS had on their careers and lives. One alumna, Susan Thomases, a New York-based attorney and political strategist who served as personal counsel to Hillary Clinton, told us in August, “Everything that was important to my career I learned at The Elisabeth Morrow School: How to make decisions, how to communicate, how to be organized. It’s a marvelous school! I am so grateful my parents sent me.”

Speaking of parents, tragically, one of our students lost her beloved father this summer after a brief illness. She and her mother were quickly surrounded by compassionate teachers, administrators, parents, and students from EMS. Meals were made and delivered; her friends were by her side and will stick close.

Our school is truly an extension of family, and I thank all of you who rallied throughout the year to offer your time, kindness, and compassion — the gems money cannot buy. As new parents and students join our community, let’s continue reaching out with a welcoming hand and drawing each one close. And let’s continue to connect and re-engage with our alumni — our greatest legacy.

On behalf of all our students, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. As each of us values our EMS experience, we invest by providing as much financial support that is personally meaningful. Together, we make all the difference.

Greetings, Friends:

Molly McGarryInterim Director of Institutional Advancement

The Apple Tree FundThe Apple Tree Fund is the foundation of our fundraising efforts at EMS. Unrestricted contributions give EMS the greatest flexibility to meet the most pressing needs; however, restricted gifts are also deeply appreciated because they empower our school leadership to fund essential initiatives such as the EMS Response Fund; Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Belonging; and STEAM, among other specific funds.

Parents and grandparents of our students, along with trustees, alumni, and friends, give generously, providing a significant portion of the school’s budget, which allows tuition to remain steady and empowers the school leadership to spearhead new initiatives that benefit our students. We thank all of our donors for their commitment and generosity during the 2020–2021 school year.

Every classroom in each division benefited from the gifts provided to the Apple Tree Fund. These contributions enriched every student and every faculty member, every day. During school year 2020-21,

we were able to enhance the following areas due to the Apple Tree Fund, thanks to your support:

COVID-19 RESPONSEYour financial gifts empowered us to procure valuable COVID-19 safety resources, allowing us to take additional precautions: powerful air purifiers, plexiglass dividers, new desks that allowed us to spread out, highest-quality scanning thermometers, and additional crews deep-cleaning the campus buildings. Your gifts played a direct and vital role in keeping our students, faculty, and staff safe year-round.

STEAM/COMPUTER SCIENCE/APPLIED SCIENCEWe created a new computer science program and new applied science course in innovation and design for 2021–22.

MATHEMATICS AND THE SCIENCESWe continued to support learning in these subjects with state-of- the-art resources and integrating best practices in teaching.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND PLAYGROUNDSWe purchased new supplies and equipment, and maintained all playgrounds.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSIVITY, AND BELONGING (DEIB)Our values are reflected in all that we teach, and this year, we were able to incorporate this important work into teaching and learning across subject areas, developmental stages, and all three divisions at EMS.

FACULTY TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR FAMILY MEMBERSSimilar to other independent schools, tuition assistance is provided for qualifying members of the faculty and staff. This benefit not only helps EMS attract and retain the highest quality educators, but it also allows our educators to serve fully.

FINANCIAL AIDThis allows EMS to support the enrollment of academically qualified students across various socioeconomic backgrounds.

Ed and Nancy Barr Fund for Faculty DevelopmentNancy and Ed Barr, parents of Christopher ’88 and Andrew ’91, established this fund in recognition of our excellent teaching staff and to support ongoing faculty development.

Anne Moloney Black ’57 EndowmentAnne Moloney Black ’57 established this endowment in 2014 to provide tuition assistance for up to two children. Special consideration will be given to qualified students who have lost a parent. Anne, who lost her own father in World War II, believes EMS’ focus on the joy of learning and the 4 C’s helped form the cornerstones of her life and served her well over the years. She hopes this fund will provide others with a similar experience.

• Mrs. Anne Black ’57 and Mr. Stephen Black

Michele Bower Scholarship EndowmentEstablished in 2013 by the Scherl family, this endowment recognizes the influential role that Mrs. Bower plays in EMS students’ successes. It supports tuition aid.

Darryl Anne Burnham Memorial FundThe Darryl Anne Burnham Memorial Fund was established by the Burnham family in 1999. It provides annual tuition aid for a fourth-grade student who would otherwise not be able to share in the EMS experience. The school thanks the Burnham family and those who honor Darryl’s memory.

Richard A. Davies Teaching EndowmentEstablished in 1988 to honor former Head of School Richard A. Davies, this endowment provides faculty development funds to foster the values he so cherished: the love of

learning, sense of self-worth, and commitment to community.

Gloria Dunn Endowment FundThis endowment was established in 2015 through a generous bequest from Gloria Dunn, a beloved and longtime teacher at EMS. This fund will both honor Mrs. Dunn and provide tuition assistance.

Graham-Johnson Endowment FundEstablished in 1976 with a donation from an anonymous benefactor, the Graham-Johnson Endowment honors former EMS teachers Susan Graham and Janet Johnson. Miss Johnson was a founding teacher at EMS and is remembered as one of the “pioneers” of the time. She taught our youngest learners for more than 40 years. Miss Graham was appointed in 1930 by the school’s founder, Elisabeth Morrow. She was head kindergarten teacher and Chilton House librarian. She began the “cocoa parties,” a tradition that continues today. On their retirement, Constance Chilton commented, “These two teachers

NAMED ENDOWMENT FUNDSEndowment funds add to the long-term financial strength of The Elisabeth Morrow School. Only a portion of the yearly income is used while the principal remains intact and growing. We thank our endowment donors for recognizing this important school priority. won the admiration and affection of their colleagues through their dedication and talents. Their understanding and skill with 4- and 5-year-old children endeared them to hundreds of students. They will always be held in the highest esteem by all who know them.” This fund appropriately benefits faculty compensation.

Mary Hawkins Memorial FundMary Hawkins was a Chilton House teacher for 24 years and was revered for her dedication to young ones and their education. Her family established this fund in her memory to provide tuition aid for faculty children at EMS.

Stephen P. Jones Endowment for Faculty and Staff CompensationParents, students, faculty, alumni, and friends of former Head of School Stephen P. Jones established this endowment fund upon his retirement. The fund supports faculty and staff compensation.

George Penny FundThis endowment fund was established in 2000 to honor sixth-grade teacher George Penny, who taught at EMS from 1981 to 2013. Students referred to Mr. Penny as a friend and an incredible teacher who challenged them through his unique instructional style. This fund provides financial aid for faculty children at EMS.

Lee Starr Technology Education EndowmentEstablished in 1999 by the Toback family to celebrate the life of their cousin, Lee Starr, a teacher, this fund provides resources for the school to acquire cutting-edge technology in support of student learning.

Have you heard about the Linden Society?

EMS alumni, friends, parents, and staff who include our school in their estate planning are automatically qualified to become members of this special giving group.

Making a planned gift is a fantastic way of showing your support for EMS and its tradition of excellence, while incorporating your own philanthropic, personal, and financial needs and goals.

It’s a powerful way to secure the future of EMS for generations to come. Additionally, donors often find that by making a planned gift, they are typically able to make significantly larger gifts than they thought possible.

Planned gifts include:• Bequests• Gifts of retirement plan assets• Gifts of life insurance• Charitable trusts

We’d like to share that one of the very first charter members of the society is Charlotte A. Benner ’42, who sadly passed away on February 26, 2020. Charlotte was born in New York City on August 1, 1933, and spent her formative years in Englewood where she attended The Elisabeth Morrow School and Dwight-Englewood School. Following her graduation from Tufts University, Charlotte returned to New York City to begin a long and devoted teaching career which led her eventually to the Springside School, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia. Charlotte’s retirement from teaching in 1983 led to her full-time move to Cape Cod, where she pursued her love of antiques and devoted herself to preserving Cape landmarks and promoting the visual arts.

Charlotte’s cousin Robert Benner notes that she would regale him with stories about her years in Englewood, and feels that her time at The Elisabeth Morrow School may well have inspired her to pursue a career in teaching. Unbeknownst to us until after she passed away, Charlotte made a significant planned gift to EMS, bequeathing $100,000 to our school through her estate. We thank her posthumously for her transformational gift and wish that we could have recognized Charlotte for her generosity during her lifetime.

Remembering The Elisabeth Morrow School with a bequest from your estate helps sustain and strengthen the school’s ability to fulfill its mission and vision in the years to come. Please speak with your financial advisor about the various tax benefits of a planned gift, as well as what works best for you and your family. And finally, if you have already included EMS as a beneficiary in your will or trust, please notify the Advancement Office by calling Maura Byrnes at 201-568-5566 ext. 7221, so that we can properly recognize you for your planned gift and officially welcome you to the Linden Society.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN DONORSEMS is grateful to our donors who have made donations and pledge pledge payments in support of our school’s Capital Campaign.

EMS ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021 35

The 2020–2021 school year was a wonderful achievement for the Parents Association in that it successfully reimagined and transformed our beloved events and

social gatherings into virtual events with tremendous participation! Our great PA community worked together to further the school’s mission, celebrate the faculty with appreciation, and gave a gift to the Apple Tree Fund and to the new NuVu program at the school year’s end. Some of our PA highlights throughout the year were our Fall Festival with a wide variety of online activities such as a magician, scary puppet show, and a pumpkin decorating contest, Book Fair and Storytelling Festival with a large variety of guest author speakers, and our Upcycle Saturday with a special guest speaker from the Terracycle company.

Led by our committee chairs, our four standing committees advanced their goals with the help of fellow EMS parents. To spotlight some of the committee initiatives from the year, the Community Service Committee partnered with the Bergen Volunteer Center to contribute to “All Wrapped Up,” donating clothing and toys to local families in need. Our DEI Committee educated our parents about raising global leaders in conjunction with discussing difficult conversations surrounding race, racism, and parenting. Our Green Committee held many collection drives at the cul-de-sac, gathering items such as cork and mismatched socks, which they sent to Smartwool as part of their Second Cut Project — committed to 100 percent circularity by 2030. To speak to our parents about managing the unknown and equipping them with resources to stay resilient with change, the Health and Wellness Committee invited Stefanie Dunnigan, a motivational speaker who teaches about mindfulness and meditation as part of the Rodgers Family Meditation Program at the Graf Center for Integrative Medicine located within Englewood Hospital.

Importantly, our class parents were pivotal in sharing information with our class communities, writing to our families every month to ensure that each and every one felt included and informed. The PA offered a grade-wide special workshop, facilitated by an artist from New York City Children’s Theater, where students met online for a digital, interactive, and accessible storytime class that mixed reading a book with theater games and ended with a dance party.

Our school store spread EMS spirit to all families by providing a variety of EMS brand options, such as

sparkly sequined Apple Tree long-sleeved shirts, green screens, and music stands. To show our faculty our gratitude and appreciation, we organized a parade during carline with signs made by students and raised additional funds for our Faculty and Appreciation Gift Fund to distribute.

I would like to thank our outgoing president, Melanie Weinraub, for her years of unwavering dedication and hard work in support of our school. She led our Parents Association and community with warmth and unity. In addition to managing successful events year after year, Melanie instituted both the Health and Wellness and Green Committees, organized theater outings, started the online Parent Forum, and oversaw the PA taking over the planning of Fall Festival and the International Food Festival.

I would also like to thank the PA executive board, committee chairs, and all PA volunteers for their tireless hard work throughout the year. Together, the collective effort and consideration of all EMS parents, along with the guidance and support of the school administration, make our PA events and initiatives run effortlessly.

The Parents Association is looking forward to a new, exciting, and successful year as we work together to advance the EMS mission with a sense of togetherness and belonging, always with a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. I encourage our returning and new parents to be involved in the Parents Association this year because it is through our collective effort that we can help provide an enriching environment filled with loved traditions, old and new, for all of our families.

Kindly,

Lauren CamarinosParents Association President

The Parents Association promotes the mission of The Elisabeth Morrow School through a partnership with parents, students, faculty, administrators, and the Board of Trustees. Providing a rich menu of parent education and social opportunities throughout the year, the PA fosters a sense of inclusiveness that helps bind our families together and offers a forum for their interests. Further, the PA supports our faculty in the classroom and beyond, demonstrating the deep appreciation of the entire community for their work on behalf of our children.
