"In or about the Moneth of June last past hee this deponent being in the streete att Wapping Wall by accident mett with the said James Browne who then and there told this deponent that hee was now goeing out upon a desperate designe upon the tearmes and conditions of Noe Purchase Noe pay and then asked this deponent whether they should drinke together before his departure, to which this deponent condescended and soe went into the Blacksmiths Armes upon Wapping Wall together with the said Browne, And saith that about 3 weekes or a month since this deponent together with his contest John Hearne being att one Bells howse in Water lane in Tower streete London and heareing that the said James Browne and the arlate James Salmon were returned from a voyage which they had lately made to Sea in a man of warre sent for the said James Browne to come and drincke a cup of beere with them..." On December 18th 1651 "The said Lighter did lye fast moored over a Racke that had beene sunke in the River of Thames neere Lower Chalk Wharfe about half a mile from Gravesend and was there imployed to weigh Ordnance and iron out of the said Racke where shee had layen and beene in that imployment now eight monthes" (HCA 13/65 unfol., deposition of Edward Bolton, mariner, of Northfleete near Gravesend in the County of Kent)

“It is usuall to pay a Lighterman or a Tydesman for his labor for every Tyde 3 or 4s a tyde according to agreement and their paynes taken in theire imployment“(HCA 13/65 unfol., deposition of George Adds, servant to Thomas May, owner of the lighter called the May fflower)

“Hee found her soe much out of repaire and soe rotten, that hee refused to proceede on in her repaire till hee spake with mr Coltman who recommended the said worke unto him; whereupon mr Coltman accompanied with mr dandy wharfinger of the Customshouse came over, and viewed the said lighter and being made acquainted with her defects, hee desired the said John Mayor to goe on and to repaire her in what ever was needfull, which hee accordingly did, and hired men and laid out moneys for their wages and for materialls, and saith the said repaires happened and were done in or about the moneth of November 1654 and that the particulars thereof were in all things and of the severall valewes mentioned in the schedule annexed”(HCA 13/71 f.15v, deposition of Isaac Mayers of horsey downe Shippwright aged 24 yeeres)
