The Poultry Run.LIVER DISEASE.

The starchy liver is of a color re-presenting pale chocolate, and insteadof being "firm to the touch it is softand "pasty." The scientific name ofthis form of liver, trouble is hyper-trophy. The liver is enlarged, theresult of overfeeding, or feeding onmaize or starch foods such as riceand potatoes. Either an excess offood or food of a starchy nature re-gularly given vviirbring about hyper-trophy, and more especially if thebirds have little or no means of exer-cise.

Congestion of the liver is the sim-plest form of liver trouble, and isgenerally traceable to sluggishness. If neglected it is very likely to be-come acute, and acute congestion ofthe liver as a rule ends in inflamma-tion of that organ. Temporary over-,feeding will sometimes cause thetrouble, and then the fasting of thebirds for a day will suffice to enablethe liver to recover its actiyity. Lackof grit is often accountable for themischief, and the gizzard being be-hind in" its work, preventing the liverfrom unloading rapidly. ■

Inflammation of the liver is a se-rious ailment following an attack ofneglected congestion. It is attendedwith fever, which means that deathis not far off. Hypertrophy is liablealso to end in acute inflammation ofthe liver; indeed, so closely is thisailment connected with congestion, the one running into the other, thatit is difficult to say, at times, whichis mainly responsible for the more

. serious- ailment. When congestionexists tilery is not necessarily hyper-trophy, whilst, on the other hand, thelatter ailment is . always accompaniedby the former. It is enough to knowthat 'either ailment, if neglected, isliable to account for inflammationshould the fowls contract .a chill.

The symptoms of liver disease areseen in the shrunken and dark ap--pearance of the comb and wattles. When 1 the darkening of the comb andwattles is accompanied by a purplishhue, one may be certain that a de-ranged liver is the seat of the trouble.

The Remedies.First of all, let the birds, be put on

a short diet,l allowing them just

enough to exist upon, and then theywill feed. upon the fatty matter storedup,in their bodies. Add a little tinc-ture of iron and some Epsom salts tothe drinking waLT, which will havethe effect of clearing ana stimulat-ing the- wearied and degenerate or-gan. Should there be looseness of the'bowels, give a dose of castor oil toclear the intestines of foetid matter, and follow on later with a dose ortwo of sweet oil, which will soothethe bowels. During the time the birdshave been doctored let them havecharcoal, grit," and green food—allthey will eat—and when an improvedcondition is seen in them, let thembe. given a gradual increase in theirrations, and let the latter be more ofa flesh-former than a fat-producer.Make the birds exercise among litter,so that a good circulation of the bloodmay be ensured.

ON CAPONIZING.Caponizing is an operation which

removes the sexual organs of;the malefowl, and the emasculation- processproduces an unsexed bird, which putson extra flesh, of superior quality. Theoperation is performed at from threeto five month's of age, and- the gain inweight is considerable; in fact, it issaid that the ordinary iolb. bird wouldscale 151b. if caponized. Another, anda big virtue, is the fact that the emas-culated birds may be allowed,to runwith the hens.* This is a point of muchconsequence to the farmer whosefowlsall run together. In ordinary condi-tions with him the cockerels are anunmitigated nuisance; they worry thehens, and, worse still,, begin the workof propagation too soon, with the re-sult that they ■ become stunted ingrowth, the quality of their flesh de-teriorates, and they produce weedyprogeny. On the other hand, if themale birds—barring the breedingstock—were caponized at three or fourmonths of age, all the undesirableitems mentioned would disappear, tothe financial advantage of the farmer-

Improved Quality of Flesh. The improvement in flesh quality of

the capon is marked, for obvious rea-sons, and a further point in lavour otemasculation is the fact that the birdmay be rounded up and marketed asthey mature. This means that an tin-interrupted supply of good poultrymeat to the city consumers' could bemaintained, as the capon takes fromnine to 18 months to mature. As itis to-day the rule is to market thecockerels as soon as they begin tospar around and become aggressivewith the hens, the result being thatthe drafts from the country districts-are sent in more or less at the sametime.

Give us the man who sings at hiswork, Be his occupation what itmay, he will be equnl to any of thosewho follow the same pursuit in silent;sullenness, He Will do more i'ri the'same tioie; he will do it better; h6will persevere longer.—Carlyle,

WHAT WRINKLES MEAN IN THESTUDY OF CHARACTER.

How comes a specialist to declare hecan tell all about people simply bystudying their wrinkles, which, afterall, may not be an unreasonabletheory/? For instance, he says, life in-crowded cities stamps its mark on the*plastic faces of the people, and thestruggle for pleasures and for' wealthmarks the victim with unmistakablesigns.

With the aid of a mirror one canprove or disprove the statements madeby the wrinkle expert, who lays downthese general laws;—

"The horizontal furrows upon theforehead are produced by mentalanxiety, the worry and fret of life, andthey indicate a tendency to nervousanxiety and are wholly opposed to theserenity of unruffled brows. Shorthorizontal lines jus^ above the roof ofthe nose indicate benevolence; whenfound just below the roof of the nosethey show one tfrat is. accustomed toexercise authority, especially when ittakes the form of forbidding 1.

"A single vertical wrinkle betweenthe eyebrows shows strict honesty inmoney matters. A disposition to re-quire justice in others is indicated bytwo wrinkles each side of the first, while wrinkles outward from theseshow conscientiousness. These linesare often marked in those who aredeeply absorbed in business, inthinkers, writers, and inventors, whilestraight, lowered brows indicatestrong concentration of purpose, long:and haul thinking-, and absop^ion inaffairs.

'"The lines raying outwardjiom theeyes show capacity Tor enjoymem, aswell as the two deep fulrows from the

' mouth by the upper lip. They are thepenalty we pay for mirth, and formthe future channel of the tear. Eitherperpendicular or curved wrinkles "be,-low the angle of the mouth indicate'^

"love of truth and hatred of c.int andhypocrisy. When these lines arc verymarked Mt begets grumbling at menand things in general.

"All who are afflicted' with wrinklesof this nature usually take a seriousview of life, and do not look upon it asa holiday, but as a season of workand struggle involving much respon-sibility. We notice these lines in amother's face when she is, mourning-the loss of a child, and in the faces ofthose afflicted with some great sorrow.Trouble, poor health, and worry willalso leave their imprint and blur themind's outlook upon life.

"Low, projecting eyebrows indicatediscernment; when accompanied byeyelids which more nearly close theeye they denote less facility of expies-?'cn, but a clearer insight, more de-finite ideas, and greater permanence9.ni steadiness of action."

Whereto Ibasounding balloons havo been u^ci,whether near the equatoi* or in north-ern latitudes, the records havo shownthat after six miles above the earththe temperature no longer drops rapid-ly as the instrument ascends, but attimes becomes stationary. The lowest, temperature during the, recent remark-,able flight was seventy a,nd four-tenthsdegrees below zero,. Fahrenheit, at apoint 12J miles high. :

DATE OF BIRTH AND THESTATURE.

. Investigations recently made inEurope and the United $t;itcs rue s;iidto have completely established thefact that the time of the .year at whichchildren are born has a marked mflu-en.ee on their stature. Boys born inNovember are generally the shoitest, and those who first see the light inJuly are the tallest. Taking an over-age, male children who come into theworld in the autumn or winter do not"jgrow so tall as those born ?.'. oiliorseasons. As for girls, "the tallcpi aie
