See, Think, Wonder Stage 1: This stage uses students’ existing knowledge to describe an item.

Question: “What do you see?”

• The question prompts students to describe the object’s attributes without naming it.

• “tiny bumps”; “written in poetry form”; “there is a key to the symbols”

Stage 2: This stage invites students to make sense of the attributes by trying to name the object, document, or image.

Question: “What do you think?”

• “I think it’s a tooth”; “I think the two men are Abra-ham Lincoln and his son”; “I think it’s an old map of the world.”

Stage 3: This stage encourages students to ask questions that have not already been answered.

Question: “What do you wonder?”

• During this discussion some answers may be revealed; other questions may be revealed through research or further study.

Book to Video AnalysisWatching a movie is different from reading a book. Often the story is too long to include all of the details so directors have to think of creative ways to show thoughts, motives, and even background information without spoiling the storyline.

1. Choose a scene in the novel and describe it.

2. Is this scene in the video?

Why do you think it is?

OR

Why was it omitted?

3. What are the tactics used to portray thoughts or motives in the video?

4. Whose thoughts or motives are being shown?

5. Why did the director choose to emphasize this individual?

6. Does this tactic correspond to the book?

7. What major scene or event was included in the book but omitted in the movie?

8. What do you think is the greatest difference between the movie and the novel?

9. Which format of the story do you like the most? Why?

10. Which format of the story do you like the least? Why?
