CESAR TOLENTINO HERNANDEZ –

artist, painter, sculptor and muralist. Hewas born in Angono, Rizal on February 25,1953. Hernandez showed an interest in artsince childhood when he was alwayscaught peeking into the nearby Lambakstudio of the late master Carlos "Botong"Francisco. His inclination toward artflourished when he was selected byNemiranda to assist him with all of hissculptural commissioned works.

In 1975, he began practicing painting underthe guidance of his friend artist Nemiranda,who introduced him in galleries and let himjoin group exhibits. Hernandez later joinedthe Angono Ateliers Association. Hefinished his first serious work in 1982, andbegan making a living selling his artwork.He then quit his job as a textile designer toshift to full-time painting. He started aseries of works and joined several groupexhibits, including the annual "Gunita KayBotong" shows.

That same year, he was Awarded a Plaqueof Recognition by Sangguniang Bayan ofAngono for supporting the UP-Liftment ofArt in Angono, the artist’s village.

In 1983-1984, he was chosen by MannyDuldulao to be one of the Ten YoungPromising Artists to be launched by theGreenhills Art Center. He also received aPlaque of Appreciation for being one of thejudges in Kaleidoscope '84 –a ”Search forMiss JSJMC in Taytay, Rizal.”

Duldulao and was interviewed by DingTanjuatco for his TV program Open forBusiness, which aired on Channel 13.

In 1989, he became a house artist atGalleries of Fine Arts. He further learnedcomposition through ErTAgle, whilepreparing for a solo show and a groupshow with established artists. He was alsointroduced in print media.

In 1990-1991, his work was featured in aChristmas card for the Tahanang WalangHagdan fundraising project and he wastagged as the best seller.

In 1991, Hernandez headed the AngonoAteliers Association but he quit after histerm and co-founded the Angono GroupArtists along with Vicente Reyes, seniorartist and longtime associate of the late"Botong.” Fom Mang Enteng, he learnedcolors, style and vision in art.

During his term as President of AngonoAteliers, Hernandez created a record-breaking total of more than ten majorexhibits and he was given a Plaque ofAppreciation for serving as Chairman ofthe Board of Judges in the search for Bb.Agham, Rizal National High School.

In 1992, he held his first solo exhibit at theManila Hotel Gallery Hallway, then at theNemiranda Arthouse. His first Mural "TheFilipino Lifestyle Yesteryears,” was boughtby the Medical Center Manila through itsPresident Dr. Paulo Campos.

His first solo exhibit served as his majorbreak-though. After the show, which was asellout, several art collectorscommissioned him to do pieces for them

and he was featured, in an issue of MedicalCenter Manila, which cited him as one ofAngono’s best that year. He was alsofeatured in the book “Who’s Who inPhilippine Art” created by art writer ReyRessureccion. He was awarded aCertificate of Recognition for Leadershipand Stewardship as President of AngonoAteliers.

In 1993, he was commissioned by ISMC todo the mural “The Traders” throughEusebio Chua, Jr. He was also commissioned,by Unilab for a large masterpiece and joinedtheir other five Angono Painters Collectionwhich included Botong Francisco, VicenteReyes, Salvador Juban, Jose Blanco andNemiranda. He was commissioned byformer mayor Eleng Marinas to create athree-dimensional figure of "Malakas atMaganda," and "Mermaid," which was donein concrete and installed at Villa CristinaResort in Antipolo.

In 1994, he was commissioned to do aconcrete mural "Ang Kasaysayan ngAntipolo," also at Villa Cristina Resort.Thereafter, he did a series of contractualworks for private residences.

In 1995, he was included in a special showarranged by Nemiranda Arthouse.Megamall dubbed him one of the ten mostactive contemporary artists of Angono and,in an art exposition sponsored by thePhilippine Jaycees, Inc. which was held atthe 6th Level Megamall, he was dubbedAngono’s Best.

In 1995-1996, Hernandez conducted artlessons at Chrissamore Learning Center,and was featured on Channel 4’s program

"For Art Sake." In addition, he wascommissioned by JH Pajara to create a life-size Venus fountain on a three-dimensionalsculpture in concrete, which was installedin Pajara’s model house in Volleygolf.

In 1997-1998, he was commissioned by thegovernment of Cainta to do two largemurals, measuring 7 ft. by 18 ft. each, forthe lobby of the newly built MunicipalBuilding depicting the history of the town’spast and present. The oil painting wasfeatured on a calendar and Christmas cardfor Aetna Philippines. He built a gallery ofhis own, Obra Maestra Arts and Frame, thatserved as his studio. It was located alongthe Angono Highway. He exclusivelyprovided all of his paintings to the BuendiaOffice of Asian Precious Metals, Inc.

In 1999-2000, he was invited to be one ofthe judges by Decs-Rizal for its RegionalOn-The-Spot Painting Competition.

In 2001-2003, he did a portrait of Jose Rizalfor the cover of the book "Rizal: Buhay atIdeolohiya" as well as one for the cover ofthe book "Panitikang Pilipino." He was alsocommissioned by the Church of Antipoloto create a life-size statue of the SacredHeart of Jesus, which was installed in thevicinity of the church and was featured inRubin's Book "Persona." His painting, "Bythe Sea" was on the cover. He was alsoincluded in the Book “Angono Bukal ngSining” and in the book "Paano NagsusulatAng Isang Ina" by Ligaya Tiamson-Rubin.

In 2003-2004, he was featured in LiwaywayMagazine News Magazine (Living, the Arts)of the Malaya Newspaper by RomuloBaquiran Jr. in a full-color spread, "The Artof Cesar Hernandez," and was also the

In 2004, he was included in a special groupshow of renowned artists of Angono,"Sining Pagniniig" at Nemiranda Arthouse.He also finished an historical landmarkmural/sculpture monument for BantayogNg Mga Bayani Shrine, which wascommissioned by the Municipality ofCainta in honor of the guerillas.

In 2005, he was commissioned by the cityof Taguig through Arch. Licup to do aconcrete sculptural mural for the newlybuilt Taguig RTC located in Bicutan. Healso participated in "Sining Angono," an artexhibit sponsored by DBP for theirfoundation anniversary and formed agroup of six known artists for a showentitled "Harmony.”

In 2006, Hernandez was commissioned byPayapa Club of Morong to create asculptural landmark/park, did the portraitsof all past SPD Directors through Gen.Boycee Rosales and the portrait of the pastChief of Paranaque PNP through Col.Ronald Estiles.

In 2007-2008, he did a series of workscommissioned for private collectors whilehe moved his studio to 40 Tiamson St.,Brgy. Kalayaan, Angono, Rizal. He was alsocommissioned by Gen. Roberto Rosales todo the portraits of 47 past MPD Directorsand at the same time was commissionedby the University of Rizal System to createa sculptural landmark which was installedat the main campus in Sampaloc, Tanaythrough its President, Dr. Olivia De Leon.

In 2009, he did portraits of directors of theIntelligence Training Group at Camp Cramethrough Col. Jose Gentiles and created abust for the former President FerdinandMarcos, which was installed at AntipoloCity.

In 2011, he was commissioned by Sta.Rosa De Lima Parish to paint the 14Stations of the Cross. It was installed at the

newly built church in Teresa Rizal. He alsoparticipated in Rizal's Art Festival, whichwas held at SM Taytay.

In 2012, he painted two religious muralreproductions, measuring 15 ft. by 7 ft.,which were installed at the ImmaculateConcepcion Church in Cainta. He alsoparticipated in the Philippine Visual ArtFestival sponsored by NCCA.

In 2013, he furnished all of the paintings forthe newly-built East 1900 building of Engr.Ed Peralta and was chosen to paint asubject for Botong's centennial year for his60th birthday.

In 2014-2015, he finished the San Isidro deLabrador Mural and was commissioned byGov. Ito Ynares to furnish large paintingsfor his house in Antipolo.

In 2016-2017, he painted reproductionmurals for Immaculate Concepcion ParishChurch in Cainta and was commissionedby the Municipality of Angono to create anarc for Lakeside Eco Park.

In 2018-2019, he was included in the tenmost outstanding painters in Rizalorganized in video by SM Taytay and wascommissioned by the Municipality ofCainta to create Heritage LandmarksStatues for various locations in town.

Currently, he is continuously creating easelworks, mostly for commissions, and ispreparing for a solo exhibit of large pieces.
