We moved to the USA in summer of 2019. I had been accepted into a Fellowship Program in SUNY and I felt I understood
English well enough to navigate the American school system. However, reality was quite the opposite: one of the biggest
challenges we faced was getting my 3 children into public schools. Once we did, however, the scenario became even more
challenging and complex. Do I need to sign-up for after-school activities? How do the grading systems work? How do I contact
the school for their food restrictions? Do I let them have 'sleepovers' (pre-covid) or play-dates in which I'm not present
physically, with their friends from school? Can I ask the parents of the kids inviting one of my children, if the other siblings can
join the party too or is that socially unacceptable? I found no resources and had to resort to social media for this information
and more. As the single, full-time working parent of 3 bright young children (all under 10 years of age), I often feel my
interests are under-represented as I can't always attend all their events (in-person or virtual) nor take them to parties and
social gatherings like other children. I want simplified schedules and easy to navigate technology with unified platforms for
remote learning. I want to enable my 5 year old to have age-appropriate fun learning activities to enjoy rather than being
asked to ensure his 5/day assignments are complete! I feel being part of the Education Council could help me bridge the gap
between parents with difficult work schedules as well as various socio-economic backgrounds, and the education system;
parents who themselves haven't gone through the American schools' system and are often unaware of what's the difference
between English and ELA!

I was born, raised, and educated here in Southern Brooklyn. I am a proud product of the New York City public education system and am
the parent of two boys who currently attend District 21 schools. I want them, as well as all our students, to be afforded the same
educational opportunities I was, growing up here in Brooklyn. When my first son began Pre-K, I served as a volunteer on his school's PAC.
When he moved on to P.S./I.S. 226, I joined their Title 1 PAC. My wife and I have made it a point to volunteer at our children's schools, not
only because we have a strong desire to get involved, but because we want our boys to see us giving our time and our efforts to make a
difference in their school community. I am a graduate of CUNY Brooklyn College. Professionally, I am an engineer. Civically, I am involved
in community outreach, including serving on the Board of Directors of a local non-profit, Bay Ridge Cares. During the early months of the
pandemic, as part of an assistance program our organization quickly coordinated and implemented, we were able to deliver grocery and
care packages to high-risk community members across Southern Brooklyn. My wife and I would take our kids and deliver grocery packages
to neighbors in need. As we have done for many years, we also delivered Thanksgiving meals to homebound seniors. Our schools and our
students have faced many challenges for some time. The pandemic has not only added new challenges, but it has made the existing ones
more pronounced. We have an incredibly diverse district, which is a tremendous asset. Besides District 21's cultural and racial diversity, we
have a broad spectrum in other areas that require advocacy for particular attention and resources. 18% of D21 students are English
language learners (ELL). 20% have a disability. 74% are economically disadvantaged. As parents and guardians, we all want the best
educational opportunities for our children in the most socially and emotionally enriching school environment. Regardless of whatever
challenges any child faces, they all deserve to receive that. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of a local charitable
organization, I am a member of the executive committee of a local political club and have been involved with several successful political
campaigns in recent years, as well as community organizing around local issues. My experience working on affecting positive change for
matters important to our community with members of our community is something I would like to bring to our Community Education
Council. I am asking for your vote so I can work with other D21 CEC members to assess our district's educational programs and ensure they
are working for our children. I am asking for your vote so I can ensure the concerns of all parents and guardians are conveyed to the
Superintendent. I am asking for your vote so our district's concerns can be brought to the Chancellor and the Panel for Education Policy
(PEP). I will work to make the Superintendent and Chancellor available to D21 families, interface with the School Leadership Teams (SLTs),
and receive public feedback on what the district should be dedicating its capital resources to. I am extremely proud to be the dad of two
New York City public school kids because I am proud of my boys and I am dedicated to doing my part to make our school system the best it
can be for all our kids. I will always do that as a parent. I hope I can earn your vote so I can do that as your representative on the District 21
Community Education Council.

NYC Public schools community, I am an Assistant Professor of Biology in Kingsborough Community College. I have been a part
of public schools in NYC for the past 11 years, first as a graduate school student in our public university system - CUNY, then
as a parent of two public school students and finally as a professor to the students who just graduated from NYC public high
schools. As a result, I have different perspective: student perspective, parent perspective and educator perspective. Over the
years, as a part of my education and professional development I learned and experienced different aspects of public school
system in NYC as well as student learning. I have attended many seminars and workshops where we analyzed how students
learn, what curricular and extracurricular needs of students to progress academically and socially while being healthy and
happy. As a parent I made sure that I participate in school meetings and activities. I tried to interact with as many parents,
teachers and administers as possible to learn about their experiences and challenges. I volunteered in countless school
activities and fund raising activities to try to give back to the community that I was very much involved. I had wonderful
experiences, as well as not so wonderful experiences. I believe being a part of NYC public school system for years and holding
different perspectives and views within this system, I am ready to serve more by being a part of Education Council. I am
confident I can help everyone's voices to be heard and work on making necessary changes and improvements in the system
to give our children what they deserve: a perfect school experience with all it's ups and downs. Dr. Devany

children, parents and school community of District 21. As an active parent leader with the experience I've acquired over the
years, I feel I have the knowledge and skills needed to continue being involved in the decision making for our schools. All
parents need to have a voice in their children's education. There needs to be additional supports and resources for parents of
children with special needs, gifted & talented and Multi Language Learners so they can learn how to effectively advocate in
their child's best interest. I would like to continue to support all our children so they can be successful in the future. I hope
you will give me the opportunity to continue advocating for the District 21 school community.

Education should not be a privilege that is given only to the children of high-income families. I believe education is necessary
to bring up the best talent in every child regardless of her/his background. We can not depend on the public school alone to
help our children succeed. We have to do our part as parents and get involved as much as we can to deliver our children's
education. My child was diagnosed with language impairment and attention deficit disorder when he was in the first grade. I
got him tested, and he started to get the services he needed one year later due to the limited resources. The testing facilities
suggested that I enroll him in a private school to get the help he needed to succeed. However, the tuitions were way out of
our budgets, and we could not afford the educational lawyer either. So, we decided to accept what school services have to
offer him. To be candid, I do not see much improvement. So, I started to read more about special education so I can support
him at my end. I tutor him constantly to meet his academic standard. I understand the school's limitation that they can not
give him the attention he needs. I volunteered to help as much as I can in my community to help other children with similar
circumstances. I tutor children in public schools and volunteer in New York Cares to help other children. Instead of blaming
others for not providing enough help, we can all put our heads together and come with a plan to help our communities.
Children with special needs should not be held back due to their struggles. They need the right individuals around them to
guide them through their educational journey. There is no such thing as a smart child and dumb child. There is only one who
has an opportunity in a great school and did not have resource limitations. Let us give all children equal opportunity to better
education. I will be honored to serve as an educational council for 2021 to apply what I learned with my son and help other
children in need.

I am a graduate of Midwood High School and Brooklyn College, and the proud parent of an 8th grader at KECSS. I feel called
to serve the students and families of District 21 as we rebuild and reconnect post-pandemic. I'm particularly focused on
ensuring that our district's students have access to/are receiving and utilizing the available mental health resources. I have a
keen interest in developmental psychology and have always been passionate about working with children and families. I am
currently a candidate for a Master's in Social Work, where my work as a research assistant has been focused on anxiety and
social impairment in children and adolescents. I believe this expertise will be particularly relevant as we continue to rebuild
following the pandemic. I also have nearly ten years of experience working as an administrator and program coordinator in
the independent private school sector, where I provided support for faculty, staff, families and senior administrators. During
this time, I served as co-chair of a steering committee for accreditation from the New York State Association of Independent
Schools (NYSAIS). Therefore, I feel confident that I have the skills necessary to implement change within our school district. In
short, I am dedicated to maximizing the potential of young adults and ensuring that children are given the tools needed to
succeed. I am also aware of the needs of our teachers and administrators and look forward to the opportunity to collaborate
with them. If I am elected to serve on our District's education council, I will bring experience, dedication and passion for
education to my work.

I am the father of 3 NY public school students. Over the years, I've seen both good and bad decision being made that affect
the quality of a children's education. I feel that with the pandemic it has affected our kids even more. It is important that we
not only make all the right choices but double down on our efforts to ensure the children of tomorrow get the proper
education and extra help required. I have always complain in private how some of the decision isn't right but I now feel more
strongly that I need to step up or shut up. I saw a billboard over the weekend that said, "If not us, who? And if not now,
when?

Jonathan Martinez CEC21 Community Education Council (21) 21K121 NO NO
My name is Jonathan Martinez and serving on the NYC Department of Education Council is important to me for many
reasons. The first being that my daughter is a NYC student and if given the opportunity, my input, my ideas, creative way of
thinking can possibly help shape not just only her education, But, the thousands of NYC school children as well. Another
reason is to get a better understanding of what is becoming of our education system and be in the know of what is to come. i
would also like a role where leadership skills will be displayed and requested of at times. Although, i do not possess direct
PA/PTA or educational office held experience, i did volunteer twice for PTA after school activities and have volunteered as a
Auxiliary Police Officer with the 72nd precinct, at the Bowery Mission in Manhattan feeding the homeless, volunteered at
New Mt. Zion Baptist church during the holidays giving out food and gifts. Overall, i hope to speak to you regarding the
educational council seat. Thank you for your time.
Elie Mbys-Davidson CEC21 Community Education Council (21) 21K090 NO NO
I want to run because I want to impact and contribute to the betterment of my children's education. My eldest daughter is in
Kindergarten, and my older son is starting school next school year. I have had a plethora of complaints related to the NYC
education system, not only from my own past experiences as a student, not only from having witnessed my younger sibling's
similar experiences, but especially from my current experience as the parent of a child receiving a CoVid Kindergarten. I have
a list of complaints and suggestions, I've always wanted to be able to do more than just complain, and being part of the
education council allows me to serve my community, while participating in the improvement of something I care passionately
about. Rather than move away from the vast excess of flaws in my neighborhood, I would rather make it a better place while
I'm here.
Shanna Michel CEC21 Community Education Council (21) 21K199 YES NO
I am a strong believer in quality education; my motto is no matter what race, ethnicity, socio –economic background or
abilities of someone it should not determine whether one accesses quality education or not. I want to leave my mark, by
helping to stimulate young minds to want to learn. I completed a Masters in Special Education at Brooklyn College and
dedicated my time to being an educator not just to impart knowledge, but to also to encourage families to do their best to
expose their kids to the best education that caters to the child's needs. I have always played an active role in PTAs for any
school that my children attend. I was the PTA president for Aim High 2018/2019. As president I fueled fund raising activities to
allow kids to get exposed to hands on learning and learning while having fun. Funding puppet shows and giving awards so
that kids feel proud of themselves at an early age. I would love to see equitability among schools, families and scholars. A
reality where students, no matter where the school is located, are taught at the highest level and are encouraged to achieve
their best. Serving on the Education counsel would allow me to influence decision making and advocate for families that may
otherwise lack the knowledge needed.

community. With nearly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic and so many issues that we continue to face, I would like to be
the voice representing you and your children. I believe that parents should have a voice in their children's education. I want to
be that voice, listen to the concerns of parents and find support they need to help their children's reach full potential. I look
forward to serving the parents and children in our community.

I am running to join the Education Council committee. It is time to revise the educational community since the covid-19
pandemic, It has taught us as students, parents, teachers, and communities that the NYC Department of Education has
somewhat failed. More importantly, the school system and city government failed. It is time to move forward and bring back
our students and teachers to a safer environment. I am willing to commit to change the education curriculum to be more
technological advancement. Our students can achieve this by learning and studying both in the classroom and online
environment. I am a single mother with one child. My child attends public school just like I did from Kindergarten to High
School. I believe the NYC Department of Education can progress by getting rid of the reformist administration and allow new
progressive candidates to reconstruct our educational programs that our students missed.

I believe that I am a fair person . Someone who is open to different perspectives. I have served on the PTO , as class mom
many times and supported my schools in many different ways. I am willing to have the hard conversations in order to serve
our children in the best way possible. I currently am a firm believer in bringing emotional intelligence work into our school
system and am certified to do just that.

Education the instruction manual to how we see the world. I believe in education and the integrity of NYC public school
system. I went to school here and so are my children now. I would not give up that experience for the world. I love how far
the education system have come in integrating with the speed of knowledge. It would be honor and a privilege if i could help
guide the system in the right direction.
