PAST PRESIDENTS

09

The journey towards our becoming a Rotary Club started in 1998/1999 Rotary year when Rotary Club of Ikoyi established that there was a need for a new Rotary club in their territory. The Rotary President then, Rotarian Victor Oyolu started the process for establishing a new Club following Standard Rotary

Constitution.

Rotarian Jerry Okwuonu, an indefatigable, versatile, knowledgeable Rotarian, and an in-coming President of Rotary Club of Ikoyi was appointed our DGSR. He called the rst exploratory meeting in May 1999 and only 4 people responded. He was not discouraged and on the 28th of September 1999 a second meeting was called and this time 15 new prospective members responded. At this time 3 other great Rotarians from Rotary Club of Ikoyi – Rot Kola Ramos, Rot Faroun, Rot Liasu – joined Rotarian Okwuonu in seeing to the success of our becoming a Club. They gave freely their Time, Talent, Treasury; they treated us to Rotary jokes and riddles; we had talks on Rotary, etc delivered by distinguished guest speakers and as time went on, we were encouraged to make impromptu speeches and talks. A new vista was opened to us and some of us who had some preconceived notions about Rotary soon began to appreciate what this great organization was really about.

By May 2000, our application for membership of Rotary International was formally submitted having met the minimum requirements of admission fee of $15 per member and 25 provisional members. Our hope then was that we were to be Chartered before the end of June 2000 but this was not to be as we soon ran into several logistic problems the most serious being with our membership. We took up this challenge and with the support of another great Rotarian, Rot Gbenga Adekoya of RC of Ikoyi; and most importantly our District Governor Rot Charles Adebiyi, who on assumption of office on 1st July 2001 took us a priority and his efforts ensured we were hartered on 11th December 2001 and formally admitted as a Club in Rotary International.

A formal celebration of our Charter took place on the 15th of June 2002 and for the past 16 years, Rotary Club of Ikoyi metro has shown incredible resilience and has contributed immensely in advancing the essence and object of Rotary. It has produced 16 Rotary Presidents all with quintessential qualities of great leaders; it has impacted the Community it serves in all areas – Literacy, Health, Water, Vocations, Polio eradication etc all of which has earned the club the sobriquet 'Pride of Rotary'.

In 2010-2011 Rotary Year we chartered a new Club in the District, Rotary Club of Ikorodu Metro. As at today the club has chartered one Rotaract Club and 4 Interact Club.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we present to you all “ The United President” Rotarian Moses Omuetha.

It is my greatest pleasure this day for the trust and faith you bestowed in me as the President of this great Club. With all the opportunities and challenges that come with my acceptance to serve us all, I believe that this journey will not be a smooth one if I am to walk it alone, however, we thank our leaders and Past Presidents, for drafting a constitution that recognizes the importance of the various Avenues of Service Directors. As it is through this synergism that we are going to make sure that we connect the world this Rotary year.

His Speech

So what is it to be a seless person? As Elder Peterson described:

A seless person is one who is more concerned about the happiness and well-being of another than about his or her own convenience or comfort, one who is willing to serve another when it is neither sought for nor appreciated, or one who is willing to serve even those whom he or she dislikes. A seless person displays a willingness to sacrice, a willingness to [put aside] personal wants, and needs, and feelings.

In times of sadness people gather to comfort. In times of celebration they are there to celebrate. We are never too young or too old to engage in seless service. We all need caring people in our lives and also need to care for others. May we humbly recognize our individual ability to have an impact on other lives for good and have the courage to do so,

Let me take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous and adorable initiatives that were undertaken by the Past Presidents particularly the Immediate Past President, Rotn. (Dr) Tunde Adeleye. Indeed you are an inspiration, a challenge and an avenue for us to continue doing these great service that you began, I am certain though, that with the present Board of Directors that we have, we shall even do much better because We as a Club have faith in this Board.

To our members, we still want to say that, this journey we cannot make alone as leaders, but it i s t h r o u g h y o u r s u p p o r t , c r i t i c s a n d encouragements that we shall have something to do together because together we shall continue to make it.

Thank you all, God bless you, God bless Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro, God bless District 9110, God bless Rotary International.

CONGRATULATION

Fellow Rotarians and GuestOn behalf of the Rotary Club of Accra East – the overarching body of Board Members and Club Officers of the 2019/2020 Rotary year - I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the invitation to this very important ceremony of investiture. I am also honoured to extend my warm congratulations to President Moses Omuetha on his inauguration and investiture as President for the Great Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro for the Rotary Year 2019/2020. At the same time, I would like to extend a warm and personal congratulations to the entire Board and Club Officers of the club.May I also use the opportunity to welcome you all to another Rotary year and as you may be aware, RI President Mark Daniel Maloney's theme for 2019/2020 is Rotary Connects the World. He asks Rotarians to strengthen the many ways that Rotary Connects the World, building the connections that allow talented, thoughtful, and generous people to unite and take meaningful action through Rotary service. . Events happening around us, locally and internationally suggest to us that as Rotarians we have to continue and indeed, in some cases intensify the provision of services to

even many more people than we have done in the past. Health services are not reaching many people who need them. Many children are still out of school or drop out of school due to avoidable barriers. Falling educational standards have become a constant worry for parents and the society at large. Equally disheartening are sights of fellow human beings drinking water from the same sources as animals. As Rotarians who have accepted the call to provide service above self, this Rotary year presents us with another opportunity to continue providing services to those who are in need and to restore hope to those who are at the verge of giving up. We are aware that we cannot meet all the expectations of those suffering deprivation but the little that we do represents a welcome gift to them. And truly as we continue to render service we connect to a world that is in need of care.I wish you all a successful and enjoyable Rotary year as we build the Rotary bridge to connect the worldRotarian President Ibrahim WuntahRCAE 2019/2020
