HOMEBOUNDPUJA CHANGOIWALA

A Family. A Lockdown. A Journey.

For young Meher, living in Dharavi meant a life full of possibilities. Things were going well until the Indian government announced the world’s biggest coronavirus lockdown. Soon, her parents are left jobless and stand to lose all – their home and their lives.

As Covid-19 cases in the Mumbai slum soar, Meher and her family realize they have no choice but to leave for their village in Rajasthan. With the ban on public movement, it becomes clear that they would have to walk the 900 kilometres, facing barbaric police officers, searing heat, wild beasts and indifferent deities.

A deeply moving story about family, survival and relentless hope, Homebound brings to the page the stark realities of those who have remained too long without a voice.

In the middle of these grand and great political games, a little island called Ceylon floats peacefully in the waters of the Indian Ocean. Those who invaded it saw only the ruins of empire, and spent their lives planting tea and building holiday bungalows here.

1892. Bombay is the centre of British India. Nearby, Captain Jim Agnihotri lies in Poona military hospital recovering from a skirmish on the wild northern frontier, with little to do but reread the tales of his idol, Sherlock Holmes, and browse the daily papers. The case that catches Captain Jim’s attention is being called the crime of the century: Two women fell from the busy university’s clock tower in broad daylight. Moved by Adi, the widower of one of the victims – his certainty that his wife and her sister did not commit suicide – Captain Jim approaches the Parsee family and is hired to investigate what happened that terrible afternoon. But in a land of divided loyalties, asking questions is dangerous.

Captain Jim’s investigation disturbs the shadows that seem to follow the Framji family and triggers an ominous chain of events. And when the lively Lady Diana Framji joins the hunt for her sisters’ attackers, Captain Jim’s heart isn’t safe, either. LOOKING FOR THE ENEMYMullah Omar and the Unknown Taliban

BETTE DAM

GENRE Non-fiction/Reportage | FORMAT Royal/PB | PAGE EXTENT 360 | PRICE `599 | RIGHTS World

For twenty years, the Taliban was the number one enemy of American and Western forces in Afghanistan. But it was an enemy that they knew little about, and about whose founder and leader, Mullah Omar, they knew even less.

Armed with only a fuzzy black-and-white photo of the man, investigative journalist Bette Dam decided to track down the reclusive Taliban chief about a decade back. But in the course of what had seemed an almost impossible job, she got to know the Taliban inside out, realized how dangerously misinformed the global forces fighting it were, and made a startling discovery about the elusive Omar’s whereabouts.

The outcome of a five-year-long pursuit, Looking for the Enemy is a woman journalist’s epic story that takes the reader deep into the dangerous mountains and war-ravaged valleys of Afghanistan as it throws up several unknowns about an organization that is now once again at the helm in one of the world’s most fragile states.

EXCERPT FROM LOOKING FOR THE ENEMY

I realized what I had to do: I had to find out who the enemy was. I suspected that

if I understood better who the enemy was, I would be better able to fathom the

war too. This enemy was a man of whom there were no photos, a man with only

one eye who had disappeared. I knew it wouldn’t be easy but I decided to start a

search for the real Taliban, a journalistic hunt for their mysterious leader Mullah

Omar, who was in hiding somewhere.

I went back to Aziz and asked him about Mullah Omar’s house again. I told him

that after my book about Karzai I was ready to start the much more challenging

quest for Mullah Omar. To get this difficult job done I would have to draw on

the connections I’d made and the experiences I’d had during my travels around

Afghanistan. I knew the risk of failure would be considerable. ‘But I want to

write about him,’ I said.

Aziz nodded in agreement. ‘You should,’ he said. ‘It’s time that people outside

Afghanistan learned more about him. I’ll take you to the house where he used

to live.’

Bette Dam is a Dutch investigative journalist who

made a career working in Afghanistan, Syria and

Iraq. She is currently a lecturer at the prestigious

Sciences Po university in Paris. She is also the author

NEHRUThe Debates that Defined India

TRIPURDAMAN SINGH AND ADEEL HUSSAIN

GENRE Non-fiction/PoliticsFORMAT Demy/HardbackPAGE EXTENT 292PRICE `699 RIGHTS World

As India’s first and longest-serving prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru’s ideas shaped the political contours of the country and left an imprint so deep that his legacy continues to be debated furiously today. He may no longer be alive to answer his critics, but there was a time when he pitted himself vigorously against his opponents in the marketplace of ideas. It is this intellectually combative Nehru that we meet in this book – voicing ideological disagreements, forging political alliances, moulding political opinion, offering visions of the future.

This book illuminates four encounters Nehru had with contemporaries from across the political spectrum – Muhammad Iqbal, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Sardar Patel, Syama Prasad Mookerjee – that are critical to understanding his ideas, and his impress on the present.

Tripurdaman Singh is a British Academy postdoctoral

fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies,

University of London.

Adeel Hussain is an assistant professor at Leiden

University and a senior research affiliate at the

Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law

and International Law in Heidelberg.

PRAISE FOR NEHRU

‘This book is an important contribution to the continuing evaluation of Nehru’s role in the crafting of modern India … this book deftly outlines the thinking and dialogue that laid the foundations of the Republic – and which remain deeply relevant and contentious today.’

– Shashi Tharoor, member of Parliament, Lok Sabha and author of Inglorious Empire

‘In exploring four controversies through the exchanges between Nehru and his main challengers, Tripurdaman Singh and Adeel Hussain have brought to life the intellectual vibrancy and excitement that surrounded the debates … Resurrecting these for today’s audiences is a public service.’

– Swapan Dasgupta, member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha and author of Awakening Bharat Mata

‘Putting together Nehru’s correspondence and conversation with powerful rivals and colleagues, ranging from Jinnah to Sardar Patel, the authors have for the first time made available … the intense arguments that went into the making of modern India …’

– Faisal Devji, professor of Indian history, University of Oxford and author of Muslim Zion

‘[A book that] reminds us of an era when Indian politics thrummed with ideas and arguments, articulated with conviction and civility. There is much to learn from, and in turn to argue with, in this timely anthology of some of modern India’s most contentious – and still continuing – debates.’

– Sunil Khilnani, professor of politics and history, Ashoka University and author of The Idea of India

‘This insightful volume foregrounds hitherto little trodden dimensions of Nehru’s political ideology. It is likely to broach new debate on interesting issues like Nehru’s perception of Islam, Muslims and communism. Therefore, it is an endeavour to open up a new vista of perception about Pandit Nehru’s vision which makes it an exciting read.’

KAMALA HARRISPhenomenal Woman

GENRE Non-fiction/Politics | FORMAT Demy/Hardback | PAGE EXTENT 328 | PRICE `599 | RIGHTS World

‘We not only dream, we do. We not only see what has been, we see what can be. We shoot for the moon … We are bold, fearless, and ambitious. We are

undaunted in our belief that we shall overcome; that we will rise up.’

– Kamala Harris, inauguration night address

On 20 January 2021, Kamala Harris was sworn in as the Vice President of the United States of America, making her the first person of Indian descent, and the first woman to reach this position. This was hardly surprising, for Kamala

– the daughter of a breast-cancer scientist Indian mother and a Stanford University emeritus professor of economics Jamaican father – has been known

to blaze a trail for herself in her chosen fields.

Fun ‘momala’ and aunt at home but hard-nosed, unsparing prosecutor and senator elsewhere, Kamala dons many hats. This biography focuses on the micro-histories that shaped Kamala Harris and celebrates her Asian and Jamaican heritage – with special attention to her India connect – and her

barrier-shattering ascent as a woman of colour coming to occupy one of the highest offices in the USA.

Chidanand Rajghatta’s masterful chronicling of Kamala’s life – her rise to candidature, the struggles and triumph in a messy, hard-won election despite

coming from a ‘non-traditional’ background – delivers an inspirational story of

a phenomenal woman.

Chidanand Rajghatta is the author of The Horse that Flew: How India’s Silicon Gurus Spread Their Wings and Illiberal India: Gauri

THE SIEGE OF DELHIAMARPAL SINGH

On 10 May 1857, the most serious threat to British supremacy in India appeared at Meerut. After months of increasing tension, sepoys pointedly refused to use the new cartridges supplied to them.

With the mutiny rapidly spreading to Delhi, it became imperative for the British to recapture the city as the success or failure of the uprising hinged entirely on its possession. It would take three months of bloody fighting for the British Delhi Field Force to defeat the rebel sepoys and recapture the city, a period in which it became unclear who besieged whom.

In The Siege of Delhi, historian Amarpal Singh comprehensively narrates the story from the uprising at Meerut to the climactic capture and sack of Delhi.

Amarpal Singh was born in Punjab and later moved

to the UK. He spent over twenty years working in

the software industry before turning to his real

interest, military history, and the exploration

and analysis of battlefields. His two books on the

Anglo-Sikh wars have been very well received.

PRAISE FOR THE SIEGE OF DELHI

‘The Siege of Delhi is that old-fashioned thing: a confirmed page-turner. Amarpal Singh’s scene-by-scene, blow-by-blow account of Delhi during the 1857 revolt brings before our eyes the chaos, the complexity, the drama, the contradictions and much else that characterized the Great Rebellion. In granular detail, but without losing sight of higher dynamics, he reconstructs the fall of the Mughal capital, and what was at stake both for the British and their Indian opponents. Vividly reconstructed and gripping in its pace, The Siege of Delhi is a must-read.’

– Manu S. Pillai, historian and author of The Ivory Throne and Rebel Sultans

‘The four summer months of 1857 when Delhi, called the heart of Hindustan, was the centre of the uprising were a turning point in the history of the Indian subcontinent. On Delhi depended the survival of the Mughal Empire and the East India Company. The Siege of Delhi describes the period with a sense of urgency and with painstaking details, based on contemporary and primary accounts, in an engaging narrative that offers new insights and information.’

– Rana Safvi, author of the Where Stones Speak trilogy on Delhi

‘A meticulous portrait of a city left to the mercy of the eclipsing Mughal court on the one hand and surmounting British authority on the other. Written with clarity and depth, it is Amarpal Singh’s extensive knowledge of military history that enlivens The Siege of Delhi. A valuable addition to the literature on the 1857 mutiny.’

‘Intelligent, charming and quirky . . . an illuminating portrait of the dire state of gender relations in contemporary India.’

– Abhijit Banerjee

In this pathbreaking work, Shrayana Bhattacharya maps the economic and personal trajectories – the jobs, desires, prayers, love affairs and rivalries – of a diverse group of women. Divided by class but united in fandom, they remain steadfast in their search for intimacy, independence and fun. Embracing Hindi film idol Shah Rukh Khan allows them a small respite from an oppressive culture, a fillip to their fantasies of a friendlier masculinity in Indian men. Most struggle to find the freedom – or income – to follow their favourite actor.

A most unusual and compelling book on the female gaze, this is the story of how women have experienced post-liberalization India.

PRAISE FOR DESPERATELY SEEKING SHAH RUKH

‘How many books do you know that effortlessly navigate Shah Rukh Khan’s movies, recent economic theories, data on jobs, juicy gossip about the peculiarities of Delhi playboys, sociological narratives and a deep dive into the love-lives of young Indian

women? This intelligent, charming and quirky book, an illuminating portrait of the dire state of gender relations in contemporary India, does all that and more.

Read it.’ – Prof. Abhijit Banerjee, Nobel Laureate for Economics

‘I loved the protagonist in this book, and I can identify with her. That is the brilliance, depth and concern that Shrayana covers, reveals and understands.

Shrayana is both mocking us, the class and gender she represents, as well as explaining our challenges. While it is a feminist book, it is also an intellectual discourse covering,

gender, class, social norms and the unforgettable Shah Rukh Khan. Being a fan myself, I felt sympathy with the protagonist. Welcome to a brilliant new writer; I felt

overwhelmed by her genius; the writing reminded me of Ruth Jhabvala who dissected as well as gave beautiful glimpses of Indian society in her books.’

– Prof. Devaki Jain, Padma Bhushan winner for contributions to social justice, women’s empowerment and feminist-economics in India

‘The personal and professional lives of Indian women across social classes come alive in these gripping stories anchored to our common love for Shah Rukh Khan. A must-

read for anyone who wants to make sense of contemporary India.’ – Snigdha Poonam, FT prize winner and

PEN America Literary Award longlist for non-fiction writing

‘Among the many contributions assessing what has happened in “development” in the thirty years of the “liberalization era” in India, Bhattacharya’s is a bold new

contribution, an intricately told tale of why the status of women has changed so little, even when so much else has changed. Her focus on gender struggles through the lens of Shah Rukh fandom leads to dazzling insights. This is social science at its very best –

enjoyable and deeply empathetic.’ – Lant Pritchett, Development Economist, Blavatnik School of Government,

Oxford University

Shrayana Bhattacharya trained in development economics at Delhi University

and Harvard University. Since 2014, in her role as an economist at a multilateral

development bank, she has focused on issues related to social policy and jobs. Prior

to this, she worked on research projects with the Centre for Policy Research, SEWA

Union and Institute of Social Studies Trust. She lives in New Delhi.

with suji, besan and

wholewheat, on my trip

to the Udwada Atash

Behram, the oldest

existing fire temple

in India. Like an Aate

Ka Halwa, Malido is made

in ghee, so it’s quite heavy

compared to Ravo.

The Dasturji’s (priest's) wife,

Rukshana, told me how they used to make

Malido in the olden days. The wheat was

coarsely ground, and a sample was sent to

the ‘ghantiwala’ who milled the wheat for the

entire village. To create the dough, almost

equal amounts of ghee and wheat were

kneaded in a thali. The dough is meant to

be crumbly, the kind of sandy

texture shortbread dough

has. It would then be rolled

into a big rotla (roti) and

roasted on a lakda nu

chullu (wood-fired stove)

until cooked on both sides

and biscuit-coloured. The

rotla was then grated—there

would be a crunch to it—after

which they would add chasni to it

and stir till it came together.

That was the traditional Malido recipe

technique. Today, just as Ravo is cooked at

home, Malido is prepared by the Dasturji's

family on auspicious days. It is evenly spread

on a thali greased with ghee, sprinkled with

dry fruits, and sliced and served with Daran

(a small roti) and Papdi (a crispy poori).

Vishwanath Pratap Singh, India’s seventh Prime Minister, struck Indian politics with the force of a tornado. Primarily remembered for implementing the recommendations of the Mandal Commission Report that provided reservations in central government services for the first time to the Other Backward Classes, he deserves a place in history for much more – from investigating murky defence deals as defence minister (which cost him his job) to bringing together a divided opposition to form a coalition government at the Centre.

V.P. Singh weathered repeated crises during his eleven-month prime ministerial tenure: the rise of insurgency in Kashmir, L.K. Advani’s rath yatra in support of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and, above all, the backlash that followed the Mandal report’s implementation.

KANPUR, 1857India’s Historic Battles: A Series

ANDREW WARD

SERIES EDITED BY SQN LDR RANA CHHINA (RETD)

GENRE Non-fiction/HistoryFORMAT Demy/PBPAGE EXTENT 200 (interspersed with colour photographs)PRICE `499RIGHTS World

Of all the horrors that blackened the uprising of 1857, none could match the atrocities committed at Kanpur.

In Kanpur, 1857 – part of a new series of books on India’s historic battles – historian Andrew Ward gives an unblinking account of the siege of the entrenchment into which the European community fled when the town’s four native regiments rebelled, the massacre at the ghat and the hacking to death of the surviving Europeans. Their slaughter would exacerbate the savage and indiscriminate killings the British were already carrying out, burning villages and condemning thousands of locals to flogging, degradation and the gallows.

This richly illustrated field guide draws on decades of research to depict the pitched battles, and the acts of heroism and sacrifice on both sides that were to be subsumed by campaigns of atrocity and terror.

Andrew Ward was raised in India and has returned

to it as a photographer, novelist and award-winning

historian. His novel, The Blood Seed, takes place in

Kanpur, and his history of the Kanpur uprising, Our

Bones Are Scattered, was universally praised by

reviewers in India, Britain and the United States.

The city of Lucknow was the epicentre of the uprising of 1857.

In Lucknow, 1857 – part of a new series of books on India’s historic battles – historian Rosie Llewellyn-Jones examines the conflict in detail, from the British annexation of Awadh to the Indian response and the subsequent revolt by sepoys. The defeat of a unit of the East India Company’s army at Chinhat led immediately to the siege of the extensive British Residency in the heart of the city. Here, nearly 3000 people – British, Indian and Anglo-Indian – held out for four and a half months. The winter saw huge defensive barricades being built around Lucknow, but the British recapture was the inevitable outcome, with their superior firepower.

This richly illustrated field guide draws on Llewellyn-Jones’s intimate knowledge of the city to paint a vivid picture of the events that unfolded in this historic urban battlefield.

Dr Rosie Llewellyn-Jones studied Urdu and Hindi at

the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.

She was awarded a first-class honours degree and

Tucked into the southern tip of India is a tropical paradise where holidaymakers go for memories and return with oversized mosquito bites. Paralysed by a pandemic, this picturesque region is no longer teeming with tourists. Only the doughty mosquitoes remain.

Somewhere halfway is a town wrapped around a giant roundabout where an ancient temple holds a million stories, a caretaker yearns for Toulouse, a tiny railway station harbours the ambition of a resort, a dog plays ball girl to tennis loving nuns and policewomen patrol on motorbikes.

Lolling on the balcony of her parent’s house, loafing around town, driving amid bullies careering her off the road and sparring with a drunk, Anjana Menon uncovers Kerala with the deftness of a trespasser.

Anjana Menon got sucked into a journalism

career that took her to Europe and Southeast Asia

before she returned to India as one of the founder

editors of Mint.  She recently co-authored the

bestseller What’s Your Story? The Essential Business

Storytelling Handbook.  This is her debut creative

FIELD NOTES FROM A WATERBORNE LANDBengal Beyond the Bhadralok

PARIMAL BHATTACHARYA

GENRE Non-fiction/Society and Culture | FORMAT Demy/PB with flaps | PAGE EXTENT 320 | PRICE `499 RIGHTS World

When the three-decade-long communist rule in West Bengal was crumbling and had unleashed anarchy and violence, Parimal Bhattacharya travelled to different parts of the region, beyond the well-trodden urban centres – from the Sundarbans to Santiniketan, from the outskirts of Kolkata to villages on the Bangladesh border, from tribal Jangalmahal to the forests of Simlipal in neighbouring Odisha. There, he encountered a fascinating cast of characters and their remarkable tales. This book documents the missing narratives of these ‘other’ Bengalis, the largely invisible majority beyond the bhadralok that the rest of India knows.

Moving between the personal and the political, and between travelogue, journal and memoir, Field Notes from a Waterborne Land takes the reader on a journey across a fascinating land peopled with unforgettable characters.

INDOMITABLEA Working Woman’s Notes on Work, Life and Leadership

ARUNDHATI BHATTACHARYA

GENRE Business/Memoir | FORMAT Royal/HB | PAGE EXTENT 348 | PRICE `699 | RIGHTS World

Indomitable is the story of Arundhati Bhattacharya, the India CEO of Salesforce and former chairman of SBI. In this inspirational memoir, Arundhati takes the reader through the challenges of her life – growing up in the sleepy towns of Bhilai and Bokaro, how she overcame adversities and rose up to become a successful banker.

Starting off at the age of twenty-one as a probationary officer at SBI, she became the first woman to head the public sector bank by taking every post as a new challenge and embracing it. In this candid, emotive account, Arundhati lays down her rules for work, life and leadership. The book will inspire not only working women but also every common person who aspires to make it big in life.

Arundhati Bhattacharya is the CEO of Salesforce India. She is a retired Indian banker and was the first woman to be the chairman of State Bank of India.

EXCERPT FROM INDOMITABLE

On 8 November 2016 at 2.30 p.m., I received a call from the RBI deputy governor’s office requesting I attend a meeting at 6.30 p.m. When I asked what the agenda was or whether I

should come prepared to discuss any particular area, I was told to come without any preparation. That didn’t seem to bode well, but by then, I had schooled myself not to worry unnecessarily

(easier said than done).

On arrival at RBI, I found a number of other bank CEOs already assembled and the rest trickled in soon after. None of us knew the agenda, but it was obvious something big was in the offing. Soon all the deputy governors other than R. Gandhi walked in. The conversation started with stressed assets as usual, and went on to other areas such as capital raising, technology, etc. At about, 7.50 p.m., a number of other RBI officials walked in and the TV was switched on. At 8 p.m. sharp, the prime minister came on and we heard about demonetization along with the rest of the nation. For a few minutes, there was stunned silence as we tried to digest what we

were hearing. In about four hours, all the Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes – comprising 86 per cent by value of notes in circulation in an economy where 12 per cent was in cash – would no longer be legal tender! Banks would be closed for one day to receive the new notes in their branches,

and would have to start exchanging the old notes for the new. Thirty-six hours! That’s all we had to supply the new notes to our branches, work out the processes for the exchange, change the IT system so that cashiers get a new screen with additional columns for the new Rs 2,000 and Rs

500 notes and the accounting for the same.

Budding entrepreneurs face a challenging road. The path is not made any easier by all the clichés they hear about how to make a startup succeed—from platitudes and conventional wisdom to downright contradictions.

This witty and wise guide to the dilemmas of entrepreneurship debunks widespread misconceptions about how the world of startups works and offers hard-earned advice for every step of the journey. Instead of startup myths—legends spun from a fantasy version of Silicon Valley—Rizwan Virk provides startup models—frameworks that help make thoughtful decisions about starting, growing, managing, and selling a business. Rather than dispensing simplistic rules, he mentors readers in the development of a mental toolkit for approaching challenges based on how startup markets evolve in real life.

In snappy prose with savvy pop-culture and real-world examples, Virk recasts entrepreneur-ship as a grand adventure. He points out the pitfalls that appear along the way and offers insights into how to avoid them, sharing the secrets of founding a startup, raising money, hiring and firing, when to enter a market and when to exit, and how to value a company.

Virk combines lessons learned the hard way during his twenty-five years of founding, investing in, and advising startups with reflections from well-known venture capitalists and experts. His candid advice makes Startup Myths and Models an ideal guide for those readers just embarking on the startup life and those looking for their next adventure.

OUTLAST How ESG Can Benefit Your Business

GENRE Non-Fiction/Environment/BusinessFORMAT Royal/HBPAGE EXTENT 368PRICE `699 RIGHTS World

Black-swan events, global warming, COVID-19 and a host of other natural and man-made disasters have tested the resilience of businesses across the world. Usually, blame for business failures is apportioned to external factors. However, the causes often lie within corporations – short-term thinking, destruction of natural resources, exploitation of labour and poor management, to name a few.

To outlast their competition, build resilience, gain competitive advantage and achieve greater returns in the long run, businesses must improve their performance on material ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) metrics. The benefits that ensue include more efficient use of resources, lower cost of operations, reduced risk, greater higher employee productivity and increased investor interest.

Outlast: How ESG Can Benefit Your Business is a clarion call to corporate leaders to follow the pathway of ESG. This is a timely must-read for all those who belong to, or aspire to be part of, the corporate world.

As for Toraban Dev, you may leave him to me, and be sure that he will never disturb your peace. Today I will put an end to his mischief or give my life fighting him. This is the least I can do for you.’

Badri Jamala was pleased to have her wings back. She put them on, and her body became luminous again. She said to Prince Saif, ‘You are a generous man, and I will help you against Toraban Dev in every way possible. Even though I now have my wings, I cannot fly you out of here. The moment I rise into the air, Toraban Dev will see me. He will swoop down on us in an instant. The only thing that can help us is a magical sword that lies at the base of the mountain. That | 22

Once he finds out that it was you who had stolen my wings, he will hunt you down and kill you, for you are no match for his  power.’

“Beautifully written with illustrations to match. A powerful reminder that no matter our location or level of experience in the water, we all have an important role to play as a voice for our oceans.”

JEFF ORLOWSKI, Director of Chasing Coral, Chasing Ice, The Social Dilemma

Step into the ocean. Walk into the deep. Feel the silence. See its wonders come alive before your eyes – the fantastic

shapes, vibrant colours, the gliding and darting of sea creatures. Welcome to the coral reef with Uma Mani, painter of corals

and passionate advocate of coral conservation.

Based on a film of the same name by Priya Thuvassery, Coral Woman is the story of Uma Mani – a story that is as inspiring as the lady herself. It is the story of a 50-year-old homemaker who

found the courage to do something as novel and intimidating as diving into the deep seas to see for herself the corals that fascinated her.

This book is a one-of-a-kind look at India’s coral reefs and the dangers that they face, which in turn

impact marine life and the coastal communities they shelter. It is a starting point to explore how each one of us

can make a difference to our planet.

Go on. Take that dive. Now.

MUTHULAKSHMI REDDYAMMU SWAMINATHAN

An unusual family

Muthulakshmi Reddy was born into an unusual family: her father was the Brahmin principal

of a college in Pudukottai (in present-day Tamil Nadu), while her mother was from the

marginalised devadasi community. Reddy’s father broke convention by sending her to school.

Reddy was academically gifted, but access to higher education for girls was limited at the

time. Fortunately, the Maharaja of Pudukottai intervened to allow her to study at the state-

run all-male Maharaja College. at. Following this, she went on to join Madras

Medical College, where she defied expectations by specializing in surgery

, after which she travelled to England for advanced studies.

The right to learn

Ammu Swaminathan was from Palakkad, Kerala. At the age of 13, she was married to Dr.

Subbarama Swaminathan, a friend of her father’s who was twenty years older than her.

Ammu is believed to have only agreed to the marriage on the condition that she would

be able to pursue an education after . Most girls who were married off young never had

this chance, but Ammu was determined to make something of herself. In later years, she

advocated strongly for a law against child marriage.

The right to learn

Swaminathan, like many other educated women at the time, became swept up in the fight

for freedom. She helped organize hartals, strikes and demonstrations in Madras during the

Quit India movement. For her activities, she was arrested and sent to the Presidency Jail in

Vellore. She was also a key member of the women’s rights movement, and helped found the

Women’s India Association (WIA) in 1917, alongside Annie Besant and Muthulakshmi Reddy.

She also served a term as president of the Madras wing of the All India Women’s Conference

(AIWC). Both the AIWC and the WIA worked to combat the many discriminatory practices

that Indian women and girls were subjected to. As a a member of the Constituent Assembly,

and argued fiercely for the abolition of untouchability and for equal rights for women

under Indian law.

22 April 1894–1978

THE CASE OF RUKHMABAI

Rukhmabai was a child bride who was married at the

age of eleven to a much older relative. When she was

older, she filed a case in court, arguing that she

had never consented to the marriage, and that

she would rather go to prison than be forced to

live with her husband and give up her studies.

The case was settled out of court; she went on to

become one of India’s first ever female doctors.

Fighting for women’s rights

Muthulakshmi continued to defy social norms

by delaying marrying until she found D.T

Sandara Reddy, a man who agreed to ‘always

respect [her] as an equal’. Alongside running a

successful practice, she was a vocal advocate

for expanding women’s rights. In 1926, she

became the first female Deputy President on

the Legislative Council for Madras Presidency.

She was also a member of the Women’s India

Association. She wrote about and spoke publicly

on issues affecting women and girls, including

access to education, healthcare and voting rights.

She was especially invested in abolishing the

devadasi system, which she saw as exploitative.

Established in 1664 to treat sick soldiers employed

by the East India Company, the Madras Medical College

was opened to Indians only in 1842.

Devadasis were women who were

‘dedicated’ to temples as young girls,

to be trained in the arts of music and

dance, a centuries-old practice. They

sometimes became courtesans who

entertained kings and nobles. By the

twentieth century, they were not

considered respectable, and relegated

to the fringes of society.

“IT IS THE STATE AND STATE ALONE THAT CAN

EFFECTIVELY BREAK DOWN THE TRADITIONAL

CUSTOMS THAT ARE HARMFUL TO THE

INDIVIDUAL AND TO SOCIETY.”

Lakshmi was the daughter of the

wealthy barrister Motilal Nehru and

his wife Swarup Rani. Like the rest

of her family, Pandit was committed to working towards independence and social

reform. The first Indian woman to hold a cabinet portfolio in British India in

1937, she presided over the All India Women’s Conference, was a member of

the Constituent Assembly and headed India’s first delegation to the United

Nations. Known for being intelligent, frank, friendly and well-spoken,

she was the first female ambassador to several nations, and was also the

first woman to be elected President of the United Nations General

Assembly in 1953. One of the most well-respected diplomats of

her era, she helped garner crucial international support for India

during its first few years as an independent nation.

Janaki Ammal was born into a large backward caste family in

Thalassery, Kerala. A nature enthusiast from her childhood, she

studied botany in Madras before becoming the first Indian woman

to receive a doctorate in botany in the US in 1931. Facing caste

and gender discrimination in India, she moved to England in 1939-40

and did pioneering work on plant chromosomes and evolution. In 1951,

Jawaharlal Nehru invited her, now an internationally-renowned scholar,

to come back home and use her knowledge to India’s benefit. Among many

other contributions, she helped develop a new type of sweeter sugarcane that

could be grown locally—this is still grown and consumed today!

THE MAHARANI OF TRAVANCORE

Anna Chandy was able to study law in the 1920s

because of the forward-thinking Maharani Sethu

Lakshmi Bayi, the queen of Travancore. Lakshmi

Bayi championed women’s education and promoted

capable women into positions of power. Many

hundreds of women continued to use the resources

she made available to study law, medicine, history,

natural sciences, languages and mathematics.

SILENT VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

In the 1970s, the government wanted to destroy a tract of densely forested land in

a part of Kerala called the Silent Valley to build a dam. However, environmental

activists waged a successful, ten-year-long campaign against the dam, as it would

have resulted in the destruction of the area. Janaki Ammal lent the weight of her

expertise to show how important it was to preserve the valley’s biodiversity.

Anna Chandy was born in the small princely state of Travancore,

in present-day Kerala. One of the first female postgraduates in

the state, Chandy qualified as a lawyer and set up a criminal law

practice. She later became the first Malayalee woman to serve,

successively, as a First Grade Munsif (a type of judge), a District judge and a High Court

judge. Vocal about women’s right to education and work, she spoke out against child marriage

and purdah. For her views, Chandy frequently earned the disapproval of the majority of the

men around her. Nonetheless, she founded and edited a publication named Shrimati that was

dedicated to spreading awareness on women’s rights.

After a secret mission in Afghanistan ends in a terrible accident, Raja Roychoudhuri, fondly known as Kakababu, resigns as the director of the Archaeological Survey of India and goes home to his second-hand books. But despite an amputated leg, his desire to hunt down old, unsolved mysteries of the world refuses to leave him alone. Accompanying him on these mysterious trips, is his thirteen-year-old nephew, Shontu.

The Adventures of Kakababu, Volume 1, is the first in the new Kakababu series. In ‘The Emperor’s Lost Head’, Kakababu takes Shontu to Kashmir to find a hidden Sulphur mine. ‘King of the Emerald Isle’ finds uncle and nephew on an uncharted island in the Indian Ocean. Stubbornly secretive as always, Kakababu refuses to tell Shontu what has brought him on these trips. Is Shontu ready for the answers he might find?

The second book in the delightful Kakababu series!

More Adventures of Kakababu is the second book in the delightful Kakababu series. In ‘Terror on the

Mountain Top’, Kakababu travels to the Everest base camp, ostensibly to climb the peak. But after

finding a corpse, a hidden glacial crevice, and an enormous prehistoric tooth in rapid succession,

Shontu begins to suspect that his uncle has, once again, not been honest about the true reason

behind his visit.

‘The Mystery of the Deserted Ship’ finds uncle and nephew afloat alone in the treacherous

waters off the Sunderbans islands. Stubbornly secretive as always, Kakababu refuses to tell Shontu

what brought him into the predator-infested mangrove jungle or to the deserted ship. Is Shontu

ready for the answers he might find.

Originally written by veteran Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhyay, these Bengali classics have

been translated by Rimi.

Sunil Gangopadhyay was an Indian poet and novelist with over 200 books to his name. A

prolific and versatile writer, Gangopadhyay was associated with the Ananda Bazar group, a

major publishing house in Calcutta. He was also the founder–editor of the popular seminal

magazine named Krittibas.

Rimi translates Bangla classic and speculative fiction into English.

Kalyani Ganapathy lives in the Nilgiris and illustrates for both fiction and non-fiction. Her work

has been featured in books and publications in India and abroad.

‘I once saw a man limping towards the summit of a very high hill. It didn’t look like the limp was slowing

him down. I was young then – about the same age Shontu is in this story – and the immense strength of the

man’s will impressed me profoundly. It was at that moment that I realised that no matter the circumstances,

if a person has the confidence and the will to succeed, no trouble was insurmountable. “Kakababu” is

modelled on that man.’ – Sunil Gangopadhyay, 1979

‘Although Amruta Patil builds her nest in the ancient, her work is a modernist triumph.’

– Sarnath Banerjee, The Asian Age

‘Curious, sympathetic, unusual [Patil] is the best of sutradhaars, and all those riled by the distant past – so sexist, so racist – which the Mahabharata makes immortal, will find

their sensibilities safe in her hands.’– Alice Albinia, Biblio

Vast in scope, ambition and intelligence – KAMILA SHAMSIE

Bangladesh, 2028. A biographer begins to document the life of an enigmatic and controversial political luminary – Babu, also known as ‘Babu Bangladesh’. In unearthing the story of a man whom many thought was the leader of his generation, he begins to uncover the story of a nation itself. Buildings acquire consciousness to chart political outcomes, a tree stands defiantly even as marauding troops try to blast it out of existence, tribes of snake and tree worshipers compete for regional supremacy, even as fish-humanoids emerge from the waters … Flitting between fantasy and reality, manoeuvring through the rainforest swamps of Bangladesh with as much ease as the immigrant colonies of New York, blurring the boundaries between myth, history and truth, Babu Bangladesh! is a work of stunning scope and ambition from the most exciting literary voice to emerge from the subcontinent in years.
