Prepare both a one paragraph summary and a comprehensive description of the resource and its various elements as it exists today.

The Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Cemetery is a large cemetery that contains the graves of many members of prominentearly southern Maryland families. Its most celebrated grave is that of Thomas Sim Lee, Governor of Maryland, whosegrave was moved here from Melwood Park (PG:78-15) in 1888. Graves include those of members of the Beall, Brooke,Clagett, Snowden, Lee, Hill, Hall, Jarboe and other prominent families. An estimated 750 to 800 graves are located withinthe cemetery.

Mt. Carmel Cemetery is situated on a 3.4-acre parcel on the south side of Old Marlboro Pike, approximately 780 feet westof its intersection with Brown Station Road. A vehicular entrance gate in located in the center of the cemetery parcel alongOld Marlboro Road. A metal gate is set into two brick piers. The metal fence continues to the east. and west along thenorthern boundary of the cemetery parcel. The grass lawn is well maintained. Several of the graves on the western side ofthe cemetery appear to be located on the adjoining parcel of`land. Federal Spring Branch runs along the southern borderof the cemetery.

Graves are set in a bucolic setting with mature trees, including many large cedars, dotting the landscape. Graves range indate from 1831 to the present day. Markers are arranged in east-west rows facing north. A central dirt drive providesautomobile access. Some graves of the Hill, Hall and Jarboe families are enclosed by a wrought iron fence near thesouthern end of the cemetery and predate the use of the land by the church. The majority of the grave markers from thenineteenth century are of marble and limestone with occasional granite markers, while twentieth century markers arealmost exclusively of grey granite. The cemetery is still in use. It is associated with the nearby St. Mary's Roman CatholicChurch on Main Street in Upper Marlboro. A rectory that once stood near the cemetery is no longer extant. A dilapidatedbarn is located on the adjacent property at the eastern boundary of the cemetery.

There is a mixture of tombstone forms and styles in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Markers range from simple tablet styles, ledger stones and crosses to obelisks (Egyptian influence). Symbolic motifs include a variety of religious symbc`ls andsecular decorative elements, from crosses, Christograms, such as, I.H.S., Angels and lambs. Many markers are of graniteor marble and have been manufactured commercially. Some of the markers are hand-made out of concrete or metal. Many of these hand-made markers are located in plots belonging to those of African American and Native Americandescent and are clustered on the east, south and west sloped edges of the burial ground. A number of these graves arealso adorned with yucca plants.

There are several family plots, including Brooke, Brown, Butler, Canter, Clagett, Garner, Griffith, Hall, Harley, Hill, Jarboe,Parker, Proctor, Sasscer, Smith, Sweeney, Wells, Wilson, Wyvill. Some of the family plots are enclosed with wrought ironfences and other are demarcated with concrete borders or granite corner markers. Several of the family plots have acentral stone with the family name with smaller flat stones inscribed with names and dates set into the ground markingindividual burial sites.

Several metal Confederate iron cross markers are present, marking the graves of those who served as Confederatesoldiers in the Civil War. One of these niarkers is next to the graves of Henry Brooke, John 8. Brooke, George E.Sweeney and others.

The Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Cemetery is one of the oldest private cemeteries in Prince George's County. It containsthe remains of many prominent citizens of old southern Maryland. The cemetery is the burial grounds for the St. Mary'sRoman Catholic Church (PG:79-1944) located on Main Street in Upper Marlboro.

The predecessor to the church was Boone's Chapel, a prlvate family chapel A brick frame church named St. Mary'swas constructed in 1848 in Upper Marlboro, but an official diocesan priest was not appointed until 1880. The presentGothic Revival Style Church was constructed in 1898. In June of 1872, Mrs. Eliza Gaston Graham, widow of George W.Graham, deeded 7.3 acres of land for a rectory to the Order of Carmelites for the benefit of the church until such timethat the Carmelites withdrew their care. In January of 1874, she deeded 2 acres,1 rood and 3 perches as a burialground for the church congregation. The land was used as a cemetery for the Hill and Hall families prior to the donationby Mrs. Graham, as the oldest grave is that of Francis Hill from 1831 and there are other Hill and Hall family gravesdating to the 186os.1

Mt. Carmel Cemetery js located on the Brooke Grove land grant, which was patented to Baker Brooke on March 16,1664. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, Brooke Grove was the property of John Read Magruder.Magruder defaulted on a loan from Zachariah Berry and his land, that included Brooke Grove, was sold to Zachariah

George W. Graham probably built the house known as "Nihil," (PG:79-31) located to the north of Mt. Carmel Cem6teryshortly after inheriting the property from his brother. Nihil was a side-hall-and-double parlor plantation house, a stylepopular in Prince George's County during the mid-nineteenth century. The house was demolished shortly after PrinceGeorge's County purchased the property in 1968 for use as a government complex.4 George W. Graham is listed in the1840 Census in District 3 of Prince George's County. At that time, he was single and held 28 enslaved laborers.5

George W. Graham (37, Planter) Is listed in the 1850 Census with his wife, Eliza Graham (30) as residing in UpperMarlboro. The Grahams' 425-acre Nihil plantation was worked by 64 enslaved laborers, making them some of thelargest slaveholders in Prince George's County. George Graham is again listed in the 1860 Census with his wife, whosename is mistakenly written as Geogeanna. At this time, the Grahams' real estate was valued at $100,000 and personalproperty at $90,000. By 1860, the Grahams held 75 enslaved laborers housed in 10 slave houses on their extensivelandholdings. It is unknown if the Grahams buried any of their enslaved laborers in the Mt. Carmel cemetery.

George W. Graham died on July 12,1863 and was buried on his Nihil plantation. His remains were later removed to

The most historically significant grave is that of Thomas Sim`Lee, Governor of Maryland 1779-1782 and 1792-1794.Thomas Sim Lee married Mary Digges, the only daughter of lgnatius Digges of Melwood Park, on October 21,1771.Lee converted to Catholicism as a promise to his father-in-law. At the beginning of the American Revolution, Leeorganized a local milltia in Prince George's County, serving as its colonel. He represented Prince George's County atthe Provincial Convention held in Annapolis in July 1775 and signed the Associatlon of the Freemen of Maryland. Leealso served as Clerk of the Prince George's County Court from 1767 to 1777 and served on the Governor's Councilfrom 1777 to 1779. Shortly after assuming the office of Governor of Maryland in 1779, Lee answered the call of GeorgeWashington for supplies of flour and other provisions for the Continental Army. Mary Lee was instrumental in procuringthe needed supplies and ensuring that they reached the Army. Thomas Sim Lee passed away on October 9,1819 andwas buried at the Digges family estate, "Melwood Park." He and his wlfe Mary Digges Lee and other family memberswere reinterred at Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Cemetery near Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in 1888.11 The presence ofLee's grave at the cemetery would not be likely to elevate the cemetery to the significance needed to be consideredeligible for the National Register, as more substantial links to the former governor are extant, including Thomas Sim Lee
