When we moved to Fort Wayne from Long Island, NY, 9 years ago, we wanted the best education for our two girls. Canterbury had a great academic reputation, and we can honestly say that it still does. Canterbury has a lot more to offer than just the excellent academics;

for instance, extra curricular clubs, activities and sports. Our girls enjoyed the teacher-student relationship and also appreciate that class sizes are smaller than public schools and attention to detail is given in all areas of learning. Now that we have been a part of all the campuses throughout the years - early childhood, lower, middle and high school - we truly appreciate the education our children have received! ~ The Choi Family

The passion that all the teachers have for what they do and their desire to help you succeed is so palpable. It gives you the confidence to confront challenges and strive to do your best. Looking back, I owe much of who I am today on my

experience as a Canterbury student. There are many tenets to success that Canterbury instilled in me, which continue to drive me forward in my life and career. ~ Dr. Jared Sekar, Class of 2007

What do you loveABOUT CANTERBURY?

5Canterbury Continues: THE IMPACT REPORT

As a teacher, you learn quickly what it takes to make a great school. When I came to Canterbury, I realized I was working at an institution that had all of those variables: small class sizes, a dedicated faculty, strong parental involvement and students who valued their

education. I have spent almost 20 years in the classroom and my time at Canterbury has been my favorite. My students bring me so much joy and I wake up each morning excited to be a part of the Canterbury faculty. All I can say is that I am thankful and blessed.

~ Uma Short, Math Teacher (Math Department Chair)

When asked what makes Canterbury so special, I always reply that it is so hard to choose. Of course, the tight-knit sense of community and the esteemed academic environment make Canterbury unique. What really sets Canterbury apart, though, is the faculty.

Their first priorities are clearly student understanding and success, which are invaluable tools for personal and academic development. I can speak from personal experience, for, having come from an educational background where I felt deficit compared with other, well-prepared Canterbury students, I was able to learn and thrive with everyone else because of my teachers’ unwavering dedication to my needs. In other words, I love Canterbury because no student is left behind.

Nnenna Ijomanta2020 SENIOR COMMENCEMENT SPEECH

In Mrs. Hamilton’s seventh-grade class, we spent a few weeks at the end of the year writing letters to ourselves to be opened at the end of our high school careers. In April, I received mine along with a shoebox of childhood journals and memorabilia I had placed inside. I used to write in those journals almost every day while I was in elementary and middle school; I wrote about every little detail in my life. Then, at the ripe old age of twelve, I decided I was too mature to keep journals, and I locked them up in my time capsule. Reading them again was like reading the diaries of someone long-gone and who was definitely not the best at spelling. Between 2011 and 2014, I would make these resolutions and grand plans for myself. For example, on New Year’s Day, 2013 I made a series of resolutions where I decided that, along with somehow publishing my own novel by the end of the year, I should write more often to better myself. 2013 was to be my year.

Carrying the spirit of resolutions into 2020, my peers and I have taken up a lot of skill-oriented activities in quarantine to mostly stave off boredom. Between sorry attempts at haircuts, having Netflix watch-parties, baking way too much bread, and treating every day like a lazy Saturday, we’ve become the masters at finding random things to do with our time. Rather than keeping a journal, I would go for lengthy bike rides to explore park trails, try new tricks, and clear my mind.

However, the novelty of this and other activities wore out over time. This was partly due to my spending a lot of my days alone, but I began to think that my issues ran deeper than just missing my friends. At the anticlimactic verge of adulthood, I felt sad and unaccomplished, despite how many recipes and rad bike tricks I knew.

Then, a few afternoons and Zoom classes later, I was cycling through the forested area of my neighborhood, when I came across a squirrel. Unfortunately, unlike a beloved squirrel of a Pascal Losambe-esque tale, this poor creature was dead in the middle of the road. I slowed down my bike, coming to a full stop next to it. It was just the two of us, and I felt some apprehension about what to do or whether I should do anything at all. Staring down at the little being, I thought about how the squirrel had a life which, although very different from my own, was meant to have a natural beginning and end. Maybe it didn’t go biking or Facetime its friends at 2 a.m. like we did, but the squirrel had its little squirrel family and a life ahead of it that was unfairly cut short. When I saw a couple walking their dog behind me, I awkwardly maneuvered my bike towards home, distancing myself from the squirrel. Yet an odd feeling of guilt and responsibility followed me. What are we to do in such a situation?

Social distancing may have begun in mid-March, but in one way or another, we’ve all been doing so for a long time. Perhaps not isolated from those in our community, but from those outside of it. For all the silly anecdotes and self-deprecating jokes we can make about ourselves, there’s still a world that exists outside of our own that we don’t always acknowledge. Canterbury’s Class of 2020 is unique for the quirky ways we’ve invented to keep ourselves entertained, but we’re also unique in the speed with which we’ve had to grow up and come to terms with reality post-high school. The fact of the matter is, people are dying-- whether because of COVID-19 or because the racism that

plagues American society devalues and decides some people’s lives are inherently worth less. Sure, we’ve missed our senior prom and the fun spoon assassins game, but we’re also at the cusp of entering a world shrouded in anguish, confusion, and loss. The futures that we have prepared for, worked hard for, made resolutions to reach, have been overtaken by what seem like insurmountable challenges with no foreseeable solutions.

We know and have been told that our differences are our strengths, but we must internalize that message in order to move forward at this point. Prolonged ignorance, cynicism, and complacency are setbacks to the betterment of ourselves and the world that we will eventually inherit and lead. It feels so much easier to cast aside or make light of serious issues when isolated in a community--whether that’s a college prep-school, a university, or a sheltered suburb--because for many of us, that’s what we’ve had the privilege to do our entire lives. However, from now on and forever more, we must see ourselves not just as individual fixtures within our communities, but as parts of a greater whole.

A mistake I made when writing those journals, aside from spelling and grammar, was believing that maturity came through various resolutions to make me better. It was a thought that I carried on throughout middle and high school--that one’s greatness is the sum of one’s parts, independent of understanding or engaging with other people. But, it takes a certain level of emotional intelligence, understanding, and genuine activism to make a difference in this world and a difference in ourselves. As much as high school graduation feels like the closure of our childhoods, no one ever really finishes growing up. We must make our lives a continuous period of growth enabled by our willingness to be vulnerable, to be empathetic, and to be resilient.

Family SpotlightTHE NALAMOLU FAMILY

It’s the Extraordinary Opportunity to Excel in All Realms. Meet the Nalamolu Family! Drs. Prasad and Latha Nalamolu are the parents of Meghana (‘20) and Sunjana (‘25) (pictured above), and we wanted to learn more about why they love Canterbury, what they see as the return on investment of a Canterbury education, and why they continue to give back to Canterbury School.

What do you love most about Canterbury School? Our oldest daughter was at the lower school from a young age and into kindergarten. I moved her out to the public school system for a time, but I felt something was missing and returned. After the long haul here at Canterbury, I can honestly say that the long-standing relationships students are able to form with their teachers and peers makes a tremendous difference. It is a close knit community. Even now if our daughter goes back to the middle school after graduating she still gets a hug. They know our daughter and the bonds that form do truly last.

In your opinion, what sets Canterbury apart from other schools? It may be cliché but the Artist, Athlete, Scholar mantra is truly personified in many of the students. When I look at our daughters’ experience over the years, I can easily say that her experience has been far beyond what I expected. What high school kid tours Ireland for a traveling concert?! Yes, she played varsity sports but the no-cut

policy ensured a diverse and well-motivated team. Academically she was truly challenged in the AP world as well.

We have many friends whose children have excelled but the

opportunity to excel in all realms is extraordinary. The promise Canterbury school offers is truly manifest in the majority of its senior class. Having said that, if you want to be focused on a particular language or discipline, they will totally support you. The diverse curriculum can be tailored to the individual. That is what is truly unique.

Why do you make Canterbury School a philanthropic priority? Our children have had an exceptional experience at Canterbury school. What better way to give back then to ensure that others have the same ability. Providing Canterbury the means to allow others to come in, to allow them [Canterbury] to educate them to levels that my children are attaining, seems like a very noble endeavor. Quality teachers with a enhanced curriculum that allows them [students] to rise to the peak of their abilities seems like an obvious thing. They always say that you stand tallest when you stoop to help a child. I believe that this is at the core of philanthropy - to put the money to work where it can do the most good.

Being parents of a Class of 2020 graduate and a rising grade 8 student, what is the return on investment of a Canterbury education? This question goes to the heart of the matter. Is the Canterbury experience worth it? I can honestly say that the environment at Canterbury provides many things, but perhaps the most important in

the end is an individual who flourishes and rises to the challenge. Our students stand tall and are at the forefront of the conversation, be it political or service oriented or more artistic. They have the confidence to get it done. It really is hard for me to put a value to that. If I was pressed to, I would say it is priceless.

I know that students come out of other schools and do well, but I feel that we not only have students that will do well but are also well-balanced. “Integrity in all things” is a high ideal, but I feel sometimes striving for the goal sometimes is just as important as achieving the goal. That is what I see in our Canterbury graduates. As a college preparatory school, the students feel well prepared to move on to college, but I feel that is really secondary to what is achieved.

What makes you most proud as a Canterbury parent? That’s a tough question! When I see the growth of our children, I can’t help but be proud of all their accomplishments. Looking back, the academic accolades are nice, but I have to admit one experience took me by surprise. Our daughter received a Gold medal at State in Voice. A Canterbury teacher, Ms. Patterson, saw something in her and encouraged her. I thought it was just another after school enrichment activity, but she nurtured her and brought out her talent. Honestly, I didn’t even know she could sing! To see our daughter excel at something so unexpected truly made me proud. If she could do this, what else might be possible? There are too many other things, but this stands out the most. Looking at her entire experience at Canterbury, she was a shy kid in kindergarten and became a leader in student government as a senior. The transformation was truly profound and again makes us very proud.

Canterbury Continues:THE IMPACT REPORT

2019-20

Dear Canterbury Community,

As we reflect upon the last year at Canterbury, it is patently clear that this was a tremendously successful year for the school’s philanthropic efforts. Between the Canterbury Fund, Laughing Cavalier, and the SGO program, your generosity resulted in over one million dollars of support for the school this year. That type of commitment is rare in any school community, and Canterbury is blessed to have so many within our family who are willing to prioritize the success of our students in their fiduciary commitments.

While the challenges of COVID-19 have presented a hardship to our school community and the world at large, Canterbury has persevered because of the generosity of donors like you. Your time and commitment to the mission of the school is inspiring, and is further indicative of the good that we can accomplish when we are united in our common goal: the support of each artist, athlete, and scholar.

To say that Canterbury is a special place is a profound understatement. This beloved institution has served as a light to our community for over forty years. We are incredibly thankful for your time and efforts in making the past year truly great, and we hope to count on that same support as we move into the future. There can be no doubt that this was a banner year for Canterbury. In celebrating that success, we recognize that it stems from your contributions to the school. Thank you so very much for your willingness to go above and beyond in the pursuit of educational excellence. Your efforts are deeply appreciated, and we are excited to partner with you in the future success of Canterbury.

With Great Appreciation,

Matt Wojewuczki David JacksonChair, Board of Trustees Head of School

We are incredibly thankful for your time and efforts in making

the past year truly great... “ “

Canterbury ContinuesA REFLECTION FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENTJessica MoralesDirector of Advancement

As I sat atop Canterbury’s high school lawn on the

evening of July 10, 2020, I became overwhelmed

with a sense of pride and hope. There they

were, Canterbury’s Class of 2020, processing

towards chairs spaced six feet apart, dressed in traditional

commencement attire, and accompanied by the sounds of

Scottish bagpipes and their distinguished guests looking on.

In that moment, feelings surrounding the previous months’

disruption, uncertainty and disappointment suddenly vanished.

The clouds broke away, the sun was shining and the seniors

received their diplomas and graduated alongside each other as

one class. The symbolism in that moment could not have been

more clear – Canterbury continues.

At Canterbury School, our value of maximizing one’s potential

inspires every Cavalier to believe in themselves and their ability

to achieve greatness and to change the world. Whether on

campus or learning remotely, today’s unprecedented challenges

won’t stand in the way of us providing a supportive, enriching,

and challenging learning environment. In fact, times like these

highlight the need for a school community, like Canterbury, that

is deeply rooted in integrity, student-centeredness, and family.

Through the lens of this new global reality, building a strong

foundation for a life of purpose, passion, and meaning takes on

even greater importance.

During the temporary closure of Canterbury’s campus, the

mantra, “Canterbury is closed, but our community continues,”

could not have been more accurate. We continued to support

one another, to take care of each other, and to band together

as one because at Canterbury, we are stronger together. In

reflection of the last six months, I could not help but recall

the many examples of pure resilience and perseverance

demonstrated by our community:

Canterbury teachers and leadership came together to launch an

educational continuity plan across all divisions that created an

extensive remote learning plan for our students so they could

stay safe at home. To this day, Canterbury remained one of only a

handful of schools that offered remote learning in the Northeast

Indiana region for students ages 2 through Grade 12. As the

transition began, the technology department worked tirelessly

to support every teacher, student and division as the school

shifted our education from the classroom to the computer,

optimizing a variety of platforms. In addition, Canterbury

extended its partnership with the Bowen Center to allow for

free counseling services and teachers worked diligently to keep

spirits high. The spring semester is typically bustling with activity

and celebrations, and our community worked hard to ensure

those end-of-year celebrations took place via virtual connection

and socially distanced creativity. This included virtual advisory,

Chapels, art shows, plays, award ceremonies, faculty music videos

(that received some local air time!), athletics’ interviews, and a

plethora of car parades to continue safe celebrations.

12

The Office of Institutional Advancement took their operation

remote as they continued the pursuit of strategic goals for

enrollment, development and marketing.

• The enrollment team launched the first virtual admissions

experience that included a suite of virtual engagement

opportunities for prospective families to discover Canterbury

School. This virtual platform was so successful that it was

recognized by international website provider, Finalsite, as one

of the top 10 virtual admission programs in the country. Not to

mention, the team successfully enrolled and retained a high-

quality enrollment for the 2020-21 school year despite the

campus closure. In addition, the Canterbury Tuition Assistance

Program (CTAP) quickly formed to offer temporary tuition

assistance for current families who were financially impacted

by the pandemic and thus, over 80 Canterbury families were

supported by this new program.

• The development team successfully completed

another fundraising campaign

but focused their energy on

engagement of Canterbury’s

many supporters and greater

community. For example, the

annual Trivia Night, scheduled

to take place in the middle

school gym turned into a weekly

live stream event and it received rave reviews! So much so that

organizations in other cities looked to Canterbury for operational

guidance on virtual events. The team remained steadfast in their

pursuit to stay engaged with their constituents, especially the

Class of 2020.

• The marketing team worked tirelessly to keep the community

up to date on the latest information, to generate consistent,

positive messages and campaigns for the community, to support

faculty and administration with virtual events and messages,

and to create various new initiatives that celebrated seniors,

faculty, and parents, including porch photo sessions, celebration

lawn signs, teacher appreciation week, and more! If you need

to jog your memory, circle back to our social media channels,

website, and many videos over the last six months to see how

the marketing team kept the morale of the community at the

forefront, no matter the distance apart.

For certain, the Class of 2020 was top of mind for all

of us during this disruptive time as demonstrated by

the outpouring of messages of love and support that

flooded our inboxes and social media channels for

our seniors. Canterbury came together

and rallied behind this senior class in

order to make their final semester at Canterbury as

memorable and significant as possible. This started

with senior celebration signs that decorated

lawns across Fort Wayne and neighboring towns,

followed by professional “porch” photo sessions

for senior families. As the end of the semester

drew near, the senior dinner was reimagined

into a new “Senior Drive-In” event, where seniors and their

parents parked their cars at the high school as they watched

their senior video graduation; the “Decision Day” college chapel

made its way to the website, where all the seniors and their

college choice are prominently listed; and the annual “Moving

Up and Awards Ceremony” was recorded via zoom with Mr.

Ottenweller and high school faculty, where they announced

the various awards and accolades. Despite all the changes and

adjustments for the senior class, the administration remained

committed to making the graduation ceremony happen as

close to tradition as possible – and what an evening it was. To

view more highlights and information from graduation, go to

canterburyschool.org/2020Graduation.

The Canterbury

School community has

demonstrated

and continues to

demonstrate incredible

resilience and support as we

navigate this next school year

and return back to class on August 26, 2020. We know there

will be more challenges in front of us, ones we will face and

overcome together. We must remain steadfast in support of our

students, faculty, parents, alumni and supporters, as we continue

to lead with integrity in all things and to find purpose, passion

and meaning for every artist, athlete, and scholar.

Total PhilanthropyDue to the overwhelming support of our annual giving campaign this year, we are honored to recognize donors by their cumulative giving. Total Philanthropy represents the comprehensive or annual giving contributions made to the Canterbury Fund, Laughing Cavalier, Restricted Gifts, and Tribute/Endowed Gifts during the 2019-20 fiscal year. We are very appreciative of the tremendous generosity by so many members in our community.

1977 SocietyThe 1977 Society was founded in 2000 to recognize and honor individuals who have remembered Canterbury School in their estate plans, either in their will or through another type of planned gift. The name of the society reflects the founding year of the school and the long-term commitment of the society members. Their thoughtful and caring support of the school’s mission through planned giving will help ensure the financial viability of Canterbury long into the future. The school is profoundly honored by and grateful to all 1977 Society members for their generous and compassionate support. The following individuals have notified the school in writing of their plans.

Canterbury School acknowledges with gratitude gifts received through the estate plans of Ben D. Mills and Carl J. Suedhoff, Jr.

Bequests and other planned gifts for the benefit of Canterbury School can provide for scholarships; bolster faculty salaries and enrichment; help with academic and capital improvements; or, be used for general operating purposes. In an effort to make this powerful form of giving more accessible to our community, Canterbury has partnered with FreeWill to offer an online will-writing tool that makes creating a bequest easy and free of cost. If you would like to join the many visionary donors in our 1977 Society, visit FreeWill.com/Canterbury to get started. If you have already made provisions to honor the school in this way, please let us know! We would welcome the opportunity to thank you today for the support you are providing Canterbury tomorrow by including you as a member in the school’s planned giving recognition club, the 1977 Society (named for the founding year of the school).

Alumni SpotlightMARY ENCABO, CLASS OF 2009 - CONTINUING LECTURER IN LINGUISTICS, PURDUE FORT WAYNE

Mary Encabo received her Bachelor of Arts from Bryn Mawr College in East Asian Studies and Education. Mary then went on to complete her Masters in Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Mary is a Lecturer at Purdue University Fort Wayne in the Department of English and Linguistics and the Outreach Director for Special Programs in the University Research and Innovation. She teaches courses for students who want to teach English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) either in the U.S. or abroad. At the same time, our local community is blessed to have her captain several projects that are related to serving people of Myanmar while also helping build the Young Scholars Academy (YSA).

Jessica Sharpe (JS): Why did you choose this area of study? Mary Encabo (ME): I chose these areas of study for reasons that

date back to when I was growing up in the Philippines. I grew up in

Southeast Asia, which is often perceived as less ‘developed’ compared

to our East Asian neighbors. I became interested in learning more

about the East Asian region to understand their histories, cultures,

languages, and what made them ‘successful’ in the eyes of other

nations. Related to all of that is my desire to see the education system

in the Philippines improve. I wanted to be a teacher in the Philippines

since I was very young; however, God had other plans so He led my

family to move to the United States (five days after 9/11!).

JS: Was there any specific program during your time at Canterbury that directed you to this career path?ME: I took Japanese and Spanish in Canterbury, which introduced

me to the field of foreign language learning and teaching. More

accurately, I would say that my experience at Canterbury as a whole

helped prepare me for my path. Not only was I learning about the

differences in quality of education among schools in the U.S. and

schools in Asia, but I was also experiencing it.

JS: Tell me more about your growth of your career. What are you most proud of in the work you do?ME: I am very fortunate that 2019 was a very blessed year for me.

It was the year when almost every aspect of my life flourished, though

that is not to say that there weren’t any challenges. In July 2019, my

colleague, Dr. Shannon Bischoff, Professor of Linguistics and Associate

Director of University Research and Innovation, and I went to the UN

in Geneva to participate in the 12th session of the United Nations

Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and dialogue

with a wide range of individuals - from indigenous peoples across

the globe, policymakers, academics, NGOs, etc.

Then from October 30 to November 2, 2019, I helped organize

the UNESCO International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019:

Perspectives conference at Purdue Fort Wayne. We had about 350

guests participate in the conference. It was truly a diverse and global

conference. What was most exciting for me was the fact that many

people at the end of the conference felt at home in Fort Wayne and

that they appreciated the positive atmosphere of the conference.

Often when we discuss global issues and societal concerns, we

approach them from a spirit of fear and scathing criticism; however,

we intentionally sought to counter that negative view and asked

that everyone who planned to participate at the conference use a

positive lifegiving approach and speak of the negative aspects from

a solution-oriented point of view, rather than a problem-oriented

or victim mindset.

In addition, there were great advancements made with the Friendship

City relationship between Fort Wayne and Mawlamyine, Myanmar. I’ve

served as the Chair of Fort Wayne Sister Cities’ Mawlamyine committee

for about 2.5 years now and have been traveling to Mawlamyine since

2017 to develop an English language teacher program at Mawlamyine

University. I was happy to hear Mayor Henry state at the Fort

Wayne Sister Cities annual gala on February 28, 2020 that he is now

supporting the move from Friendship City status to official Sister City

status. To some people this might not seem to be important, but when

you’re involved in diplomacy and international relations, anytime

cities or countries decide to continue engagement instead of

disengagement, that signals that there is still hope and desire to

33Canterbury Continues: THE IMPACT REPORT

actively pursue more peaceful measures. It also communicates that

the U.S. is still and can continue to be a friend to other nations.

I’ve also been working on a young project, the Myanmar Initiative,

which is housed under Purdue Fort Wayne’s University Research and

Innovation. The purpose of the project is to support Myanmar’s higher

education reform. Similar to the UNESCO project, Dr. Bischoff and I

have had the opportunity to meet with a lot of fascinating people -

community members and leaders, Ministers from various government

offices, the U.S. State Department, and Ambassadors. It is a lot of

work and it takes a lot of time to coordinate many stakeholders, but

our vision is to work towards integrating top-down and bottom-up

approaches to educational and economic development.

Finally, YSA is also moving towards increasing its impact across Fort

Wayne by strengthening its partnership with both Canterbury and

Purdue Fort Wayne. I’m looking forward to seeing the direction that

YSA will take given that it now has 2 complementary partners that are

committed to college prep education and college access. I’m excited

to be able to assist in providing more access to resources and

educational opportunities to our local youth.

I know I spoke mostly about my work, and while my work is an

extension of who I am, it is not fully who I am. Simply put, I am

someone who seeks to multiply my God-given talents and resources

in order to serve more people. Thankfully, I’m able to do that with all

of the various projects and programs I’m involved with.

JS: I am so impressed with all you are doing. Changing gears a bit, what is you favorite Canterbury memory?ME: Mr. Colegrove’s Spanish class and Mrs. Hancock’s class during

freshman year still stand out to me because of how they set the tone

for my 4 years at Canterbury. I came from a public middle school

so their classes helped me adjust to the rigor of the Canterbury

curriculum, find my rhythm, and develop habits that would enable me

to be successful later on.

JS: In your opinion, what was the advantage in attending Canterbury School? ME: When I attended Canterbury High School, I had been in the

United States for only 4 years. Canterbury showed me the difference

in quality education across schools in the U.S. and around the globe.

The academic preparation was crucial for me to become the

educator and leader that I aspired to be. I’m grateful that Canterbury

did not lower its expectations of students and respected our

individual strengths and weaknesses.

YSA students at the IYIL conference at Purdue Fort Wayne - Dr. Bischoff and I provided the opportunity for YSA to have a special session with the UNESCO IYIL steering

committee where they could interact with them and ask them questions about human rights, international affairs, and their work with the UN system. The committee is in charge of planning and implementing activities that support the

objectives of the United Nations’ International Year of Indigenous Languages (now they are working towards an International Decade of Indigenous Languages). (photo credit: Purdue Fort Wayne, Jim Whitcraft)

JS: As an alumni, what about your experience puts the biggest smile on your face?ME: Several moments come to mind, but my time with Mrs. Alt and the

Speech team certainly makes me smile. Those long Saturday Speech meets,

the practice sessions for competitions, and the late night Steak n Shake

dinners after traveling from a Sectional or State tournament, contributed to

my mental endurance. At the same time, I had fun with my teammates.

JS: How has Canterbury changed your life?ME: Canterbury has definitely prepared me for my work today by

equipping me with the skills that I need to thrive in a knowledge-based

economy and an era where there are multitudes of information to sort

through. More importantly, Canterbury taught me to care for and cherish

my community. I had planned to be elsewhere when I finished my studies,

but for personal reasons, I came back to Fort Wayne. God clearly had a

plan for putting me back in Fort Wayne. I love that I am able to care for the

community that I grew up in and influence the global scene. Most people

look to New York, D.C. or California to do a similar kind of work, but we can

also do this from Fort Wayne. Truly I have the best of both worlds. My hope

for current Canterbury students and other alumni is that we support the

growth of Northeast Indiana and build on the capacity of Fort Wayne. It

doesn’t matter where we originally came from, each place can be turned

into a vibrant place and home. To use Canterbury’s current language, each

person matters because each person has intrinsic value and a purpose. That

purpose is to use the education, privileges, and resources that we have to

love and serve our neighbors - both local and global.

JS: What is next for you?ME: This much I know: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered

into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who

love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). None of my adventures from these past 3 years

were planned, yet I have been fortunate to taste and see God’s goodness

through it all. I thought that I would only be able to do the things that I am

doing now later on in life. I didn’t expect these opportunities to come at this

point in my life. God created the conditions and sent the people into my life

who would allow me to walk on this path. So what is next? I’ve just learned

to trust the Lord and let Him guide my path. He took me to places I never

imagined I would go and they satisfied the deepest longings and desires

of my heart and captured my imagination and intellect. I can only look to

my future with an open heart that is dedicated to service and leadership no

matter what form that takes.

• Planning community-enriching events and organizing volunteers• Facilitating communication among parents, teachers and administrators• Fundraising to support school programs

Every Canterbury School parent is considered a member of the association and is encouraged to participate. There are volunteer opportunities to utilize various talents and accommodate every schedule.

We are particularly grateful to the Leadership team who served cohesively during both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years. Beth Behrendt, President shares, “It has been an honor to serve the Canterbury community and to help parents engage with the school through volunteering. The executive team and I appreciated the chance to serve for two school years to streamline processes and involve more volunteers. Even though this past school year took an unexpected turn, I so value the dedication and creativity of all the event leaders and their volunteer teams.”
