The Medal of Honor was awarded by fZresident Roosevelt t o 14 members of the, Naval service, while Secretary Knox au thor ized present - a t i o n of t h e Navy Cross t o 48, one of whon i s t o r e c e i v e t h e Navy Cross with Gold Star.

Three women-the wife of a naval off icer and two telephone o p e r a t o r s - a r e among those p resentcd l e t t e r s of commendation by Prcs ident Roosevelt , Secretary b o x , Act?iral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S.N., ,Commander- In-Chief, Pacific Fleet , and cormanding; o f f i c e r s of var ious f l s e t d iv id i)Lo n s and shore s ta t ions.

Fourteen of the ne'dal presen+&t,ions must be made posthumously s ince they were earned by o f f i c e r s a n d men who d i e d f i g h t i n g t h e i r s h i p s , in carrying out sel f - imposed missions that mcant the sacr i f ice of their l i ves t ha t sh ipmates migh t l i ve , and in other demonstrat ions of heroism. Eleven o f these won the Tiedal of Honor, three the Navy Cross,

Among those awarded the l k d a 1 of F o m r posthumously are Rear A d m i r a l Isaac C. Kidd, Captain Franklin Van Valkenburqh and Captain Msrvyn s. Hennion. Adnirnl Kidd and Captain Van Valkenburgh died when the for - mer's f lagship , the USS ARIZONA, blew up from rmgazine explosions and a d i r e c t hoI& h i t on the bridge. Not only men and sh ips a r e a f f ec t ed i n t he Navy's v a s t expan- s ion program. Its ramifications have reached to many places and many a c t i v i t i e s e i t h e r h i t h e r t o u n a s s o c i a t s d n t t h a p o t e n t i a l war e f f o r t - o r which have la in almost dormant since the days of a former war e f f o r t ,

Among those places i s a small wooden bui ld ing a t Lakehurs t , New Jersey, where today eggs are cracking open and young homing pigeons a r e emerging from their lofts, . This has been going on f o r s e v e r a l veeks and will cont inue for o thers .

There a t t h e Naval Air Station experienced pigeon raisers are hard a t work ca r ry ing ou t o rde r s t o e,xpand the present f lock of several hundred b i rds in o rder tha t the o ther l igh ter - than-a i r s ta t ions open- i n g on the East and West coas ts t h i s spr ing w i l l be suppl ied with these va luable " l iv ing rad ios . I t

Not s i n c e t h e l a t e 2 0 ' s has there been such wholesale effort a t Naval pigeon l o f t s . A t the c lose o f tha t per iod when radios sup- planted homing pigeons in a i rplanes, l o f t s were' abandoned a t heavier- t han -a i r s t a t ions and the valuable breed of pigeons raised by the Navy might have faded into oblivion had it :lot been perpetuated a t Lakehurst, ''home of t he d i r ig ib l e s . "

They were used t h e r e i n various l igh ter - than-s i r work:. i n d i r i g i b l e s , b o t h r i g i d and non-rigid, and in f r ee ba l loons . In t he fo rmer they were enployed as a supp lmen t t o t h e c r a f t s I rad ios and in the l a t t e r as the only fISadios.1'

As well, they competed i n important races with lfcivil ian' l b i rds . In t he New Jersey Concourse r x e s t h e y have competed aga ins t as many a s 5,000 other pigeons. ,

I n 1940 ;i Navy b i r d made the highest speed ever recorded i n a 500-mile race by averaging over 60 miles pcr hour f o r the d i s tance . I n 1941 t h e Navy l o f t won the highly coveted everage speed cup for the yea r ' s s e r i e s r aces i n t he Seaboa rd Club.

I n t h e 1930's, however, g rea t numbers of homing pigeons were not needed by the Navy. They too were fee l ing the a f te r e f foc ts of disarmament fever.
