Thisisoneofthemostcommonquestionsaskedbyplannerswhen

implementingMaximo.

WhatisaLocation?

Alocationisdefinedasaplacewhereassetsareoperated,storedorrepaired.Usingsystemsoflocationsandspecifyingthelocationforassetsonassetrecords,providesthegroundworkforgatheringandtrackingvaluableinformationaboutthehistoryofassets,includingasset

performanceatspecificsitesandasanassetismovedfromlocationtolocation.

WhatisanAsset?

An Asset isanyequipment,machineryortechnology your

companyownsorleasesthatwillbemanagedandmaintained

usingMaximo.

RotatingAssetsWhatisaRotatingItem/AssetinMaximoArotatingitemisaserializedasset,suchasapumporanotebook,thatyoudefinewithacommonitemnumber.Youdesignateanitemasrotatingbecauseitsharespropertiesofbothitemsandassets.Arotatingitemcanhaveaninventoryvalueandanissuecost.Arotatingitemisaninventoryitemwithagenericitemnumber,acurrentbalance,andmultipleinstancesthatcanbeusedinvariouslocationsaroundaplant.Forexample,youmighttrack10individualfive-horsepowerpumpswiththesingleitemidentifierPUMP-5HP.Arotatingitemcannotbeconsumed,andismaintainedasanasset.Aftercreatinganitemandaddingittoastoreroom,youcaneitherusetheAssetsapplicationtocreatetheassetrecordfortheitemyouwanttotrack,orcreateapurchaseorderfortherotatingitemandserializeitwhenyoureceiveit.Whenyouassociateanassetwitharotatingitem,balancescanbedisplayedandtrackedfortheitem.ArotatingitemistrackedbothbyitsitemnumberinInventoryrecordsandbyitsassetnumberinAssetsrecords.Anitemcannotbebothasparepartandarotatingitem.

ALocation isanaddress.AdditionallyaFacilitycanbethoughtofasasuburbandanIntergroupcanbethoughtofasastreet.

TheAssetcanthenbecomparedtothehouseatthataddress.Theassetcanbereplaced,whiletheaddressstaysthesame– tocontinuewiththeanalogy,ahousecanbedemolishedandanewhousebuilt,howevertheaddressdoesnotchange.ThisallowsahistorytoberecordedagainsttheLocation,andwhenanAssetisrotatedordisposedofthehistoryoftheLocationisnotlost.

• Locationscanbeofthefollowingtypes:Operatinglocationsarethelocationinwhichanassetoperates.Workordersandticketsarewritteneitheragainstthelocationitselforagainsttheassetinanoperatinglocation.Useoperatinglocationswhenbuildingalocationhierarchy.

• Assettypesoflocationsarevendor,salvage,andrepair.Assetscanbelocatedinassettypesoflocations.Youcantrackanassetnotonlyasitmovesfromoneoperatinglocationtoanother,butasitmovestoavendorortoarepairlocation,andperhapstoasalvagelocation.

• Inventorytypesoflocationsarelaborandcourier.Theselocationscanmaintainabalanceofanitemoritemsissuedfromastoreroom.Forexample,acourierlocationholdingabatchofitemsissuedfromastoreroomisresponsiblefortheitemsuntiltheyarereceivedintoanotherlocation.
