Jaar ontvang.

Ekurhuleni is calling on all camera enthusiasts hoping to enjoy a career in photography to enrol for a free nine-month-long digital photography course.
Although the classes began in September, enrolments are still open to all aspiring photog-raphers between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, residing in the Tsakane, Duduza, Kwa-Thema, Nigel, Geluksdal, Brakpan and Springs areas.
"We believe this opportunity will inspire young people to develop their own enterprises and allow them to generate an income through their art, so that they can contribute to the economy," said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
The photography course is set
to equip students with camera techniques, capturing and analysing situations, interpret-ing themes such as night life, outdoors, photo-journalism, architecture, people and por-traiture, city life and landscape photography.
Photography classes will be presented every Wednesday in the Duduza Library's Group Ac-tivity Room. Admission is free and cameras will be provided for the duration of the course.
The city is also offering bud-ding fi ne artists the opportunity to fi ne tune their skills through the Ekurhuleni Art Develop-ment School.
The classes will assist stu-dents whose schools do not offer art as a subject and out-of-school youths who are
interested in forging a career in the visual arts.
Registration for the art classes is open until Friday, October 9, and will take place until May, next year.
Free art classes are available at the following venues: Springs Community Hall
(Saturdays, 9am to 11.30am); Geluksdal Library
(Wednesdays, 2pm to 4.30pm); Kwa-Thema Library
Group Activity Room (Mon-days and Tuesdays, 2pm to 4.30pm) - 16:30).
Photography course and art class enrolment forms are avail-able at the Springs Art Gallery.

According to information received, the fol-lowing crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend: FridayIn Station Road, at about 3.50pm, a female
motorist’s passenger side window was broken by a robber who stole her handbag.
A housebreaking occurred in New Klein-fontein Road, Leachville. A PlayStation was stolen. SaturdayA case of sexual assault, involving two
male suspects, was reported. SundayA business was broken into in Railway
Street. The suspects entered through the roof and stole a microwave, DVDs and tools.
A housebreaking occurred at the corner of Devon Street and Afrikaner Street, Dalview. TVs, a microwave and a spare key to a ve-hicle were stolen.
A housebreaking occurred in Lester Road, Brenthurst. Laptops, cellphones, jewellery, an external hard drive, a modem and fl ash drives were stolen.
A 22-year-old woman and her aunt suf-fered a terrible ordeal on Monday even-ing, last week, when they were confronted by armed hijackers.
“I drove from Springs with my aunt and we were on our way to Masefi eld Street, in Dalpark, to drop off something at a friend’s house,” said the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous.
“When we arrived at their driveway, we hooted and my aunt walked to the gate, while I went to the backseat to get the things.”
A white Toyota Corolla with four occu-pants appeared and blocked the women’s vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf 5, in the driveway.
Two of the occupants, who were carry-ing fi rearms, approached the women and demanded that they get into the backseat of the Golf.
“They pushed us in and ordered us to hand over any jewellery or cellphones; that’s when one of the robbers took my car keys,” she said. The two hijackers then jumped into the vehicle and took off, with the women still sitting in the back.
“My aunt pleaded with them to let us go; I don’t know for how long we were driving around until they decided that we could go.
“They didn’t stop the car, it was still moving while we got out.”
The two victims were not injured and a case of hijacking was opened at the Brakpan Police Station.
Many residents fl ocked to the Brakpan municipal swimming pool to escape the scorching heat and to have fun in the sun. June Lister (10) was one of the many children who enjoyed cooling off in the pool.

There has been some confusion about the entrance fee charged at the Brakpan municipal swimming pool.
“The swimming pool is a category
B facility and swimming pools in this category are Olympic size, not heated and can cater for clubs, school level aquatic events and recreational swimming,” said spokesperson for
the Ekurhuleni Metro, Themba Gadebe.
“The entrance fee therefore is R10 per person per entry.” Change is not available at the swimming pool and
the public is therefore urged to bring R5, R2 or R1 coins.
“Our coin mechanism does not accept any paper notes,” explained Gadebe.

Dry conditions can lead to disasterThe South African Weather Servic-es (SAWS) has issued an alert on unusual elevated weather tempera-tures, due to the El Nino weather pattern that the country is currently experiencing.
These dry, windy conditions, with low rainfall pattern infl uences high possibilities of veld fi res.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Disaster and Emer-gency Management Services (EMM-DEMS) has recently experienced major fi res in informal settlements, as well as veld fi res.
These fi res have been precipitated by hot dry windy conditions and the heatwaves which are being experi-enced lately.
“The department has noted a wor-rying trend of schools and formal dwellings being burned during this period,” said the spokesperson for disaster and emergency management services, William Ntladi. He reminded residents of fi re and safety measures to be taken dur-ing extreme conditions:Veld fi res:Reduction of fi res during periods
of high fi re hazard, and the estab-lishment of fi re control committees to control fi res, an alarm system, fi refi ghting teams and grass-beaters to be organised in advance and plans prepared. Ensure that you have suffi cient
fi re breaks and that a fi rebreak is wide enough and long enough to have a reasonable chance of preventing a veld fi re from spreading to or from neighbouring land. Don’t discard lit cigarette butts
in veld. Don’t make open fi res near dry
grass or veld. Never leave any open fl ames
un-monitored.Heatwaves: Avoid direct sunlight by wearing
a hat, and use sunscreen. Don’t leave children or pets in
parked locked vehicles. Stay in shade, under shaded
trees. Drink lots of water to prevent
dehydration. Take frequent breaks if you are
working outdoors. Avoid strenuous activities. Avoid alcoholic, caffeinated or
carbonated drinks. Wear light, bright coloured
clothes.Structural Fires: Always have a fi re extinguisher
in the house as a precaution and have it tested and inspected regularly. In the absence of a fi re extin-
guisher, have buckets of sand and water to use in case of fi re outbreak. Install smoke detectors for early
warning and detection of fi res. Avoid overloading of plugs,
switch off appliances when not in use or when going away. Close all doors within the house/
offi ces in the absence of the family/somebody even when going on holi-day, to reduce chances of fi re spread. Use candles correctly and
safely; before going to sleep, blow out candles. Ensure that the gas, paraffi n or
electrical stove is turned off when not in use. Keep garden hoses nearby to
assist should a fi re start.Don’t store highly fl ammable
liquids and other hazardous materials in the kitchen or near a stove.
“The Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) is always prepared to time-
ously respond to all incidents within the metro,” said Ntladi.
The following numbers can be called in case of emergencies: 10177 or 011 458 0911 or cellphone 112.
Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency. Provide the operator with all the details she/he requires.
Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.
Vukuphile graduates put theory into practiceWhile the City of Ekurhuleni prepares to kick-start phase three of its Vukuphile programme, graduates from the second phase are making strides in the con-struction industry.
One such case is that of three women who, through interactions in class, forged a partnership which led to the merger of three construc-tion companies.
Thobile Mkhize of Hillah Con-struction and General Services, Irene Dlamini of Tse Di Thlaga Supply and Projects and Prudence Nkosi of Basithanda Bonke Trad-ing are putting theory to practice.
The trio's fi rst joint venture was the building of the Thokoza Trad-ers Market, with 37 traders' stalls to be occupied by small businesses from Thokoza and surrounding areas.
The R2.5-million building project, which was handed over to the city in June on 2014, took the Vukuphile graduates only 18 months to complete.
Their second major project for the municipality, on which they are currently busy, is the construc-tion work at the Nigel Spaarwater Incubator Farm. Their scope of work includes renovations to the farm manager's house, building of a kraal, feed stores and a cattle feedlot.
Vukuphile is a national contrac-tor development programme that is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme. It is a joint initiative between the various government organisations, such as municipali-ties and the National Department of Public Works.
"The programme gave us the opportunity to formally learn innovative and proper ways to do business," said Mkhize, with regard to the curriculum.
"We are truly grateful for the opportunity that government has given us; we have our sights fi xed on even bigger projects, including in areas outside the boundaries of our city," added Nkosi.
The Vukuphile phase two trio: Prudence Nkosi (left), Thobile Mkh-ize and Irene Dlamini have set their sights high after completing the contractor incubator programme and merging their companies to increase effi ciency.

Spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Disas-ter and Emergency Management Services, William Ntladi, has cautioned residents to be careful during hot and dry conditions. Shante-Lee van Nieuwenhuis (4) recently visited the Brakpan mu-nicipal swimming pool with her family, to cool off from the heat.

Free vehicle testing during OctoberFor the majority of people residing in Ekurhuleni, public transport is the only means of getting from one point to the other.
The Ekurhuleni Metro is, there-fore, rolling out a robust plan of action to celebrate and highlight the importance of having safe and reli-able transport services throughout October, dubbed Transport Month.
For the entire month, free vehicle testing of all public transport vehi-cles and trucks with a gross vehicle mass of 3 500kg and above will be conducted at any of the Ekurhuleni testing centres.
The free testing will be done between 8.30am and 2.30pm on weekdays, except for Wednesdays, when it will begin at 9.30am.
No prior booking is required. The following testing stations are participating in the programme: Brakpan - 12 Short Street,
Vulcania. Alberton - Bosworth Street,
Alrode. Boksburg - Reservoir Street. Wadeville - Osborn Road. Kempton Park - H Lewis Road,
Spartan. Nigel - Dam Street, Voster-
kroon.
Springs - Diesel Road, New Era. In breaking the bounds of the
transport sector, which is a male-dominated fi eld, the metro will acknowledge and honour Ekurhu-leni women involved in transport through an awards ceremony to be held tomorrow (Saturday), in the Kempton Park City Hall.
Furthermore, on October 16, a licensing business gala dinner will be held in Germiston, where the Licensing Business Desk, opened in 2004, will be re-launched to highlight the convenience it offers to businesses.
The high number of deaths on the country's road continues to be a concern for government and various organisations.
Ekurhuleni faith-based organisa-tions have taken it upon themselves to do their bit to create awareness of the matter and they will, to this end, congregate for a Transport Indaba on October 26, in the Germiston City Hall.
In the wake of recent fatal taxi industry unrest, the interdenomi-national prayer conference is an-ticipated to address critical issues affecting public transport operators and commuters.

Give beggars food, not cashD Groenewald writes by email:
I would just like to let the residents know that the woman who begs at the robot in Dalview, on the corner of Springs Road and Farquaharson Road (near the Shell Garage), buys cigarettes with the money we give her.
Her husband and older son sit and smoke on the grass near where she begs.
Her other children sit around there all day in their school uniforms.
Can anybody offer this man a job, or doesn’t he want to work?
He does not appear to be disabled and it is probably just convenient for him to get his wife to beg in order for him to smoke and relax all day.
I do not know the family’s circumstances, but
what future do the children have when they are brought up to believe that begging is normal?
They will become our future beggars. The other woman and her husband who beg at
the VC Spar, and the woman, her daughter and son who beg at the robots at the Mall@Carnival are also becoming such a pain.
I can help them once in a while, but it is not
possible to give them a donation every time I visit the mall.
I will, in future, only give food and, maybe, if we can all donate food to a food bank or to a charity, all these beggars will disappear off the streets.
They always indicate that they only want money for food, so let’s give them food only. Not money for cigarettes and alcohol.
Om my kind so te sien, breek my hart.
Dit maak my as ouer depressief.
Trotse inwoner, Brakpan skryf:

The Ekurhuleni Metro, in partnership with SASCOC and the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, hosted a successful Olympics Day re-cently.
South Africa’s top athletes took time off from their busy schedule - just before jetting off to the Commonwealth Youth Games that were held in Samoa and the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville - to enjoy the day's festivities with amateur athletes from
across Ekurhuleni by par-ticipating in a 5km fun walk, 7.9km run and aerobics ses-sions.
Olympics Day is the only annual worldwide event of the Olympic movement which serves as an ideal platform to encourage people to become more active, by highlighting the benefi ts of being physi-cally active.
Banyana Banyana stars who represented South Africa in women's football at the 2012
London Olympics, Refiloe Jane, Janine van Wyk and Amanda Dlamini also joined in the day’s activities.
Young people were taught about the importance of the Olympic philosophy of life, that combines the values of a balanced mind, will and body.
They soon learnt that the Olympics are not just about competing for medals, but also about tackling the issues of racism and fairness, as well as working with communities.
Youth are taught the secrets of Olympians
Banyana Banyana players pose for a picture during the Olympics Day celebrations, held in Boksburg, just before their departure to the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.
The momentous kick-start of the Olympics Day 5km fun walk, by both amateur and top South African ath-letes, at the Birch-wood Hotel and Conference Centre, in Boksburg.

My name is Mlungisi Makhumsha and I am married, with two daughters for 25 years, My daughters have been trying to get into
university but were rejected. My daughters became the laughing stock in the
neighbourhood and in the family. They would laugh at them and gossip about them that they are failures in life. My life also wasn’t
good at all. I have always been in debt. Being a teacher for 20 years I had nothing to show but I want to thank God who helped to lead me to this woman herbalist Mama Janet. She and Shafi k fi xed my miserable life by reading my palms, cleansed my house with water. I got an increase in my salary at work, I am
always favoured these days and my daughters have also managed to get jobs. One is
working as a doctor and the other as a lawyer also with better salary. My wife is also
expecting to get her long denied pension since she was retrenched 2 years ago. They had refused to release her money but now
she was given two months to get the pension money.
Consultation is R150.00 Unbelievably amazing all thanks to
Mama Janet & Shafi k

Husband and wife drag racing duo and Brakpan residents, Wouter and Elise Havenga, are still tearing up the drag strip.
At the recent fi fth and penultimate round of the Drag Nationals, held at the Tarlton International Raceway, Elise and Wouter both took fi rst place in their respective classes for the fi rst time.
Elise now leads her Super Street Class or legal street cars running between 11 and 14 seconds cat-egory, while Wouter is currently in third position in the national points standings in the Competi-tion Eliminator category.
With a 21 points difference between fi rst and third place in his championship, it will go down to the wire for Wouter in the fi nal round on October 25.

It was a night for the international contingent at EFC 44, at Carnival City, as Scotland’s Danny Henry and France’s Cyril Asker head north with their new EFC belts in tow.
A stunned Carnival City bore witness to a historic night for the sport.
The main event was a short affair, after yet another incident of Andrew “One Gear” van Zyl giving his neck away too eas-ily, which saw him succumb to a guil-lotine choke from the Frenchman.
What started as a timid affair gathered pace midway through the fi rst round and ultimately led to the two men struggling it out on the ground.
The skirmish on the mat was soon over after van Zyl gave Asker too much room.
Asker pulled guard with the guillotine fi rmly set and the defending champion had no option but to submit.
Asker went on to declare he would be the “most domi-nant champion the EFC will ever see” in his post fi ght interview.
The main event was preceded by Leon Mynhardt’s successful defence of his lightweight belt against a resilient Themba Gorimbo.
The challenger shot early in the fi rst round, which led to several close but unsuccessful attempts at an ankle lock.
Gorimbo took Mynhardt’s back late in the fi rst, but the champion’s power allowed him to break his opponent's grip relatively easily before the bell.
The fi ght intensifi ed in the second round, as Gorimbo managed to land a vicious overhand right that rocked Mynhardt. Many felt his decision to shoot directly after landing the punch was the wrong one, as the champ was clearly shaken.
Mynhardt was presented with the opportunity to fi nish as Gorimbo left his neck exposed in the tussle.
He duly capitalised, to salvage South African pride on the night, much to the delight of the partisan crowd.
Boyd Allen’s loss to Danny Henry will surely go down as the fi ght of 2015, after the Scotsman took the seemingly unbeatable Allen into the champion-ship rounds.
After a fi rst round that saw Allen pick apart the challenger with a barrage of strikes, the Scotsman composed him-self to change the course of the fi ght.
Henry directed the fi ght to the ground in rounds two and three, where he was
more than a match for Allen. A highly technical exchange between
the two athletes had the crowd in rap-tures, but the intensity seemed to get the better of Allen and he visibly gassed as the fi ght went on.
In round four, Henry again managed to get the better of his opponent on the mat and closed out the fi ght with a series of strikes that led to a stoppage by referee Brad Bloch.
Allen was gracious in defeat, after suffering his fi rst loss in the organisa-tion.
“He got the better of me and I gassed,” he said.
“I have no excuses. “Credit to Danny and his team.” Italy’s Micol De Segni completed the
foreign invasion at EFC 44 with her unanimous victory over local favourite Danella Eliasov, showing tremendous technical ability in all facets of MMA.
The fi ght opened with De Segni dominating the stand up exchanges in the fi rst round, and then cruising through rounds two and three with some clinical wrestling.
The fi rst fi ght on the main card was marred by what many feel was a questionable judges’ decision, as Peter “Kratos” Nyide lost to Oumpie “Lion Heart” Sebeko by split decision. The three rounds were action-packed, with heavy hands and some devastating kicks from both competitors.
Many felt that Nyide was the right-
eous victor, despite the judges’ call. When questioned on his thoughts,
EFC president Cairo Howarth con-fi rmed that both athletes would be paid their win bonuses in lieu of their great performances.
“Fight of the Night” was awarded to the featherweight title clash between Boyd Allen and Danny Henry, while performance bonuses were awarded to Horatius Alonu, Oumpie Sebeko and Peter Nyide. EFC 44 full results: Anicet Kanyeba defeated Jeff

Cricket club’s new ‘Links’ in the chainLogan Green
There was a sense of blissful tranquil-lity and positive optimism atround United Cricket Club’s Hosking Park, at the week-end, when the 2015/2016 Eastern Cricket Union club season commenced.
The Brakpan-based club enjoyed fruitful and positive results, with their women’s team and Premier League side the stand-out performers, in particular.
On Sunday, October 4, skipper Justin Gamble’s team stepped onto the fi eld for their third consecutive campaign in the elite Pre-mier League, and looked a promising outfi t in their encounter with Springs Old Boys.
With valuable Premier League experience steadily growing in their ranks, and the ad-dition of semi-professional all-rounder and Titans player Eden Links to the set-up, the side showcased bright and encouraging signs that they could well fi ght it out in the upper echelons of the table this season, however, as the old cliché goes: “it is still early days”.
Links showed his class with the willow as he romped his way to a brilliant 110 runs (the third century scored in United’s Premier League history, following centuries by Aidan Justus and Rian van der Merwe last season).
His innings was not that straightforward and easy, though, as he worked hard to help United recover from a tough period, where they lost fi ve wickets for a mere 60 runs.
He knuckled down and formed a solid partnership with Justus (48), to set the tone for a score of 265 all out in the 49th over.
Springs Old Boys could only manage 109 runs in their reply, as they succumbed to a strong bowling display from Gamble’s men.
Branden Grutter continued where he left off for the Saturday Firsts, the previous day, when he picked up three sticks for 16, to claim four Springs scalps for just 19 runs.
Links also contributed with the leather and picked up fi gures of 3/22 with his off-break,
while paceman Tshepo Motaung, fresh off receiving his Premier League cap at the start of the match, achieved statistics of 2/17.
The impressive per-formance saw United achieve a bonus-point win by 159 runs. The women’s team had
set the ambience around the place on Saturday, October 3 with a convincing victory over Kempton Park on Hosk-ing Park B.
The women defeated Kempton Park by a mammoth 202 runs.
United scored 210 batting fi rst with Adele Van Eck top-scoring with 69 and Jessica Poley 51 not out.
The hosts then bowled out their Kempton opponent for just eight runs in 5.1 overs.
Van Eck picked up four wickets for fi ve runs, Kyla Styles two wickets for two runs and Bernadette Greeff with one wicket in one ball to wrap up the match. In other results, the Saturday First
League team defeated Daveyton by three runs.
The Promotion League team was on track to defeat Bakerton on Sunday when their op-ponents abandoned the match due to player/umpire disputes.
United’s Directors side suffered a 47-run loss to Kempton Park A.
Eden Links raises his bat in celebration of his fi rst century for United Cricket Club’s
Premier XI, on Sunday.

Ford scales Ford scales new heights new heights with Everestwith Everest
diff-lock, a low-range transfer case and decent ground clearance and approach and departure angles.→→ THE LAUNCH At the launch in the Western Cape a planned
off-road excursion was scrapped because of con-tinuous heavy rain that would have slowed our large group down too much to keep to the programme, but the essentials and more are all there for serious bundu-bashing.
On the road the wagons feel comfortable and lively enough, with decent handling and a qual-ity feel, but the 2.5 tonne mass makes them feel a little less spirited than the specifi cations imply. →→ VERDICTThe Ford Everest has Toyota’s Fortuner squarely
in its cross-hairs, and is a much more up to date vehicle, but it’s also a fair bit more expensive at R593 900 and R646 900 for the XLT and Limited versions. The question on everybody’s lips is how good the all-new Fortuner will prove when it ar-rives here next year, and how much the price will be affected.
>>> GGAAVIN FOSTER
Ford has launched a determined assault on the SUV market with an all-new Everest based upon the very successful Ford Ranger T6 platform.
Where its predecessor, quietly allowed to fade away in South Africa a year or two back, used a 115kW / 380Nm three-litre four-cylinder turbod-iesel engine, the new wagon boasts a sonorous fi ve-cylinder 3.2-litre turbocharged oil burner that doles out a claimed 147kW at 3 000rpm and 470Nm of torque.→→ WHAT’S NEW? The engine isn’t the most important change
though, because everything else about the new model is a giant step forward. Build quality is very good, styling is streets ahead of that of the previous model and the black leather interior is top-notch, but the ace up Ford’s sleeve is the very comprehensive range of electronic safety and convenience features that are standard on both the XLT and the top-spec Limited models.→→ EQUIPMENT Both come with all the driver aids we›ve come
to expect plus ROM (Roll-Over Mitigation) and TSC (Trailer Sway Control) as well as rear parking sensors and rear-view cameras, auto wipers and lights with electronic high-beam control, and Ford’s SYNC 2 in-car connectivity with an 8” touchscreen. SYNC 2 recognises up to 10,000 natural voice commands for the entertainment system, climate control, and any connected mobile devices. The question here is, of course, how badly we need 10 000 commands to operate our cars?
A handy feature that’s unique to Ford products and will thrill parents is the MyKey system that clips Junior’s - or the staff’s - wings by allowing the owner to programme a spare key to limit the car’s top speed and audio system volume, while issuing stern warnings when the maximum speed limit looks close to being infringed. There’ll doubt-less be a fair amount of sobbing in the suburbs over this.→→ TOP-OF-THE-RANGE The fl agship Limited version is loaded with
interesting stuff that has until now been available mainly in top-end German SUVs as expensive
add-ons. These include six front and four rear electronic sensors that work with strategically-placed radar sensors to monitor what›s happening around the car, and these can send pulses through the steering wheel to warn you when you›re drifting out of your lane, or even cause the steering to start easing you back on course. They also feed info to the Adaptive Cruise Control to automatically slow the car down when it comes up close behind another, and then get back up to speed when the road ahead is clear again.
The same sensors are used for the Active Park Assist that measures a gap for parallel parking and then eases the wagon into an appropriately-sized parking bay without any input from the driver. A novel touch in the Limited is that the third row of two seats can be electronically set up or stowed away. → → IMPRESSIONSThe car is solidly luxurious yet seriously capable,
whichever version you buy. There’s a strong ladder-frame chassis with decent suspension, a straight-forward four-setting terrain management system with intelligent four-wheel-drive, an electronic

→→ OIL BURNERSOn the diesel front, the badging stays the same;
there’s the 320d, which now gets 140kW/400Nm and consumes a claimed 4.0 litres/100km and a 0-100km/h time of 7.2 seconds and now also gets twin tailpipes. The 330d remains unchanged with the same 190kW/560Nm with a fuel consumption of 4.9 litres/100km.→→ VERDICTThe 3 Series is a fantastic product. Its build
quality, driving dynamics, styling and ergonomics make it a compelling package. It does need to be this good though; the new A4 rides on a new platform, the Jaguar is an exercise in lightweight engineering while C-Class simply ticks all of the
boxes. I will wait until I drive the Jaguar and the A4 but for now my money would go for the 3 Series purely because of its dynamism.→→ WARRANTY AND SERVICE PLANThe 3 Series range comes with a two-year un-
limited mileage warranty as well as a fi ve-year/100 000km motor plan.

THE 3 Series is BMW’s most important model; the locally produced model contributes to one quarter of the Bavarian marque’s global sales. With the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class racking up the sales every month, the new Audi A4 on the way and the new Jaguar XE impressing, the 3 Series was in need of an update, which it received. I went tothe BMW plant in Rosslyn, near Pretoria, to drive the updated model to fi nd out whether the revisions have made the car more adept.→→ REVISIONSThe updated 3 Series is a case of spot-the-differ-
ence. However, BMW assures me that there are new front and rear bumpers, reshaped headlights, larger air intakes up front as well as new L-shaped LED tail lamps. There are also new alloy wheels and a few new exterior colours to choose from. The interior has also received a few tweaks, with chrome additions to the air vents and several controls as well as gloss black accents, while the centre console now has a cover that slides open. Minor - I know - but it’s the mechanical and nomenclature changes that count.→→ NOMENCLATURE, YOU SAY?The Germans are the masters of changing their
models’ names every few years and this updated 3 Series continues in that tradition. At the entry level point the 316i has been replaced by the 318i, which has ditched the four-cylinder turbo petrol for the brand’s 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol. The model has 100kW/220Nm and is available with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. It’s more effi cient too, with a claimed consumption of 5.0 litres/100km.
The 320i gets a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 135kW/290Nm and is also more effi cient with consumption ranging between 5.3 and 5.5 litres/100km depending on the transmission.
The old 328i model has now been replaced by the 330i model; it still has a 2.0-litre turbo petrol, but now comes with 185kW/350Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.→→ NEW TOP DOGThe fl agship 335i has been replaced by the 340i,
which gets an all-new 240kW/450Nm three-litre straight-six turbo motor called the B58. It comes as standard with the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and will get from 0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds. I had an opportunity to drive the new model at launch; the new motor’s power delivery feels more linear and the car feels more eager, too. The consumption that we achieved during our 200km test route was commendable.

while there is barely any perceivable turbo lag, some-thing which Ferrari has worked very hard to perfect. The car also doesn’t sound turbocharged apart from the occasional wastegate fi zz and whoosh. The fi gures are quite astounding, 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h. I had to remind myself that this is still the baby in the range.→ → Open road cruisingI simply had to take it out on the open road so I
went for a cruise down the freeway and a few back roads north of Johannesburg. What surprised me was the accessibility of the car, it doesn’t feel big and intimidating as I had imagined a Ferrari might, it felt about the size of an F-Type Jaguar, but with better visibility. The car is also very comfortable on the open road with many settings to dial it from
relaxed to insane. It is a testament to how modern cars can be usable and insanely capable at the same time.→ → Does it feel special? While this is my fi rst Ferrari experience it is not
my fi rst supercar experience and therefore I at least had a few cars that I have driven previously to compare this prancing horse to. It certainly feels like you’re in something that has been brilliantly engineered, from the straight line grunt, to the quality, to the ride and handling, it feels like an oc-casion when driving the car and I think that in itself, is what the brand is all about. What do you say when Ferrari contacts you and asks if you’d like a go in its new turbocharged cab-riolet? I’ll tell you, you say yes fi rstly and then you decide what you’ll be doing with a multi-million Rand supercar for eight hours. It was my fi rst pucker Fer-rari experience so I wanted to make the most of it.→→ The collectionI arrived at Scuderia South Africa, as I pulled up
the car was waiting for me in the delivery room, yes that’s right, there’s a room where Ferrari place cars for when customers come to collect, complete with couches, coffee table books and a lovely lady
to offer you a hot beverage. Before driving the car you are taken through its key features and then on a short drive by a Ferrari representative, it all makes you feel quite special.→ → Taking it outI was then handed the keys and told to return
it by 4pm, which gave me a good few hours with the machine. I drove the car in the city with the top down, just listening to that twin-turbo fl at-plane V8 motor buzz. This is the fi rst turbocharged Ferrari since the iconic F40, and since this motor is also in the new 488 the era of forced induction Ferrari models is in full swing.
The level of performance on offer is very impres-sive, with 412kW/755Nm in a car that weighs just over 1700kg. The acceleration is quite addictive

the lower end of the range, the four-cylinder 1.2-litre motor has been replaced with a more effi cient 1.2-li-tre three-cylinder; it maintains its 60kW output in the Active model and consumes 4.3 litres/100km. The base model Pop Art gets the same new motor but with 50kW and a claimed consumption fi gure of 4.4 litres/100km.
The big news is the entry of a new model in the form of the GT Line, which gets the 81kW/205Nm 1.2-litre turbo petrol motor from the 308. It is available as a six-speed manual and an all-new six-speed automatic transmission co-developed by ASIN AW. Both the manual and automatic versions use a claimed 4.5 litres/100km.→ → SO WHAT’S IT LIKE?I had the opportunity to drive the GT Line with
the automatic transmission for a brief time at launch. Peugeot claims this is a class-leading automatic transmission however, I still believe the DSG transmission in the Polo is superior. That being said, the transmission - in combination with
the motor - works very well. The car gets to 100km/h in less than 10 seconds
and has good in-gear acceleration for a more sat-isfying drive than the previous naturally aspirated unit with the four-speed automatic transmission.→ → SPECIFICATIONThe base model Pop Art gets airconditioning,
a radio with CD and AUX compatibility, dual front airbags, front electric windows, ABS brakes, central locking and Isofi x child seat points.
The Active model has alloy wheels, colour-coded door handles and mirrors, two-tone halogen head-lights, LED daytime running lights, front fog lamps, the seven-inch colour touchscreen display, front and rear electric windows and cruise control with speed limiter.
The GT Line adds cornering fog lamps, half-leather upholstery, a leather-trimmed steering, auto-activat-ing headlights and rain-sensing windscreen wipers and an automatic bi-zone climate control system.→ → VERDICTI think there is some great value to be had from
the base model and even the Active specifi ca-tion in the updated 208 range, however, the GT Line’s pricing is a bit on the high side when com-pared to rivals such as the Volkswagen Polo, the Mazda2 and Ford’s Fiesta. Overall though, the 208 is a solid product that deserves success in the market place.→ → WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCEThe base model gets a three-year/100 000km
warranty, a three-year/45 000km service plan while the Active and GT Line models get a fi ve-year/60 000km premium plan (full maintenance plan).

PEUGEOT’S B-Segment hatchback, whether it be the 206, 207 and even the outgoing 208 has always accounted for at least half of the French automaker’s local sales volumes. Suffi ce to say that an updated 208 is a very important model for the brand. I got behind the wheel of the updated model, which Peugeot hope will kick-start a renewed interest in the brand after the new 308’s surprising lack of local success.→ → UPDATED EXTERIORThe 208 gets a very mild exterior makeover,
with updated headlamps that feature black and chrome finishes, a revised bumper and LED daytime running lights on the more expensive models.
The grille is also wider and has chrome surrounds while the new GT Line models get black and chrome
fi nish in its grille. The side profi le remains unchanged apart from new alloy wheel designs, while at the rear, the car gets revised taillights with an LED claw motif. There are also three new colours, orange power and two matte colours, ice silver and ice grey.→ → INTERIOR FAMILIARITY The interior of the car is very much the same,
with the i-Cockpit that divides opinion among so many. The small steering wheel does intrude upon one’s view of the dashboard however, it looks and feels great. The seven-inch infotainment screen has touchscreen functionality along with USB/Bluetooth/Internet functionality. The interior fea-tures good quality materials; the fi t and fi nish is up there with its competitors as is the build quality, which wasn’t always the case with Peugeot models in the past→ → NEW POWERTRAINSThe 208 range has received more notable up-

Tips to help save fuel this EcoMobility month
WITH the holidays fast approaching we will soon be heading down to our much needed holiday destinations.
Here are some fuel saving tips for when you hit the long road:→ → MAINTENANCESERVICING: get the car serviced regularly to
maintain engine effi ciency.ENGINE OIL: make sure you use the right speci-fi cation of engine oil.
TYRES: check tyre pressures regularly and before long journeys; under-infl ated tyres create more roll-ing resistance and so use more fuel.
BEFORE YOU GOLose weight: extra weight means extra fuel so if
there’s anything in the boot you don’t need on the journey take it out, also hit the gym before your holiday, trust me, every bit counts.
STREAMLINE: roof-racks and boxes add wind resistance and so increase fuel consumption. If you don’t need it take it off – if you do, pack carefully to reduce drag.
LEAVE PROMPTLY: don’t start the engine until you’re ready to go as idling wastes fuel and the engine warms up more quickly when you’re moving.
DON’T GET LOST: plan unfamiliar journeys to reduce the risk of getting lost and check the traffi c news before you leave.→ → EN ROUTEEASY DOES IT: drive smoothly, accelerate gently
and read the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking.
DECELERATE SMOOTHLY: when you have to slow down or stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear.
ROLLING: if you can keep the car moving all the time, so much the better; stopping then starting again uses more fuel than rolling.
CHANGE UP EARLIER: don’t labour the engine but try changing up at an engine speed of around 2,000rpm in a diesel car or around 2,500rpm in a petrol car. This can make such a difference to your cars effi ciency.
CUT DOWN ON THE AIR-CON: air-conditioning increases fuel consumption at low speeds, but at higher speeds the effects are less noticeable. So if it’s a hot day open the windows around town and save the air conditioning for high speed driving.
STICK TO SPEED LIMITS: the faster you go the greater the fuel consumption. The faster you drive the more work the engine has to do, thus needing more fuel. Take it easy, the journey is all part of the holiday. •ad

Dear Editor
ONCE more I fi nd it necessary to comment on our local road users, these being in Brackenhurst, Brackendowns, Alberton, Swartkoppies Road and Klipriver Drive.
Generally speaking, people tend to pick on the taxi drivers in our area, so I thought it was time to chat about our non-taxi road users, yes… you!
There was a time in my life when I worked as a same-day driver for a courier company. I started my round at 6am and fi nished at around 9pm, on a good day. I drove over 4 000kms a month and during this period, I encountered a number of bad drivers. I drove from Sandton to Randburg to OR Tambo airport as well as to Pretoria as much as 10 times a day.
During this time, one hardly ever encountered a vehicle run a red light, or skip over a four-way stop. Sure, there weren’t as many vehicles on the roads back then.
Now, fellow road users, in just a mere 10km trip to Alberton one can count no less than four to six vehicles run red lights, ignore stop streets, overtake on a barrier line, drive without using a seatbelt, talk on a cell phone and in some cases, leave children standing on the seat.
I now ask, have things become better or worse? The answer is quite clear...worse and it seems no one gives a damn! Why? I say it’s the total lack of law enforcement in our towns and in our country. I parked and observed over 83 vehicles run the traffi c lights on the corner of Ring Road West and Swartkoppies Road in the spate of just 45 minutes.
You can fi nd traffi c offi cials everywhere but you don’t see them stopping offenders. Meanwhile, things just get worse and worse. So folks, how do we fi x this? Wait until it’s one of your children or a family member who gets seriously injured or even killed? Is this what it will take to get better caring drivers back on our roads again?
Come on people, play the game.
Harry Smith
WAKE UP DRIVERS! WAKE UP!
Dear Editor,
I REFER to your opinion piece in Week 39, Be Cautious of Scammers at Filling Stations and have to advise that I’ve had the same encounter with this guy who said he was stuck on the N12 and needed money for petrol. I went to the fi lling station with him and gave the garage owner R100. I told the owner not to give the guy the money - only petrol.
Three months later, I was approached by the same guy telling me the same story about being stranded without petrol. He didn’t realise I’d met him before and that’s when I told him to get a job and stop scamming people.
We need to be careful; there are many desperate scammers out there.

BE VERY WARY OF SCAMMERS
Dears Editor, I FIRMLY believe that the cause of the high mor-
tality rate in this country is caused by bad driving habits and impatience.
I live in Bez Valley and we have a “mock testing ground” in the area, which is always inundated by learner drivers.
I was driving recently and came up to a stop street at which a municipal truck was offl oading something. I patiently waited for the truck to move on when behind me I heard a hooting going on.
A learner driver and his instructor were shouting at me to overtake the truck.
There was a white barrier line there so I sat behind the truck and eventually the learner driver and his instructor overtook me and the truck then crossed the stop street and was gone.
Surely if we have driving “instructors” encourag-ing their pupils to break the law at such an early stage in their driving career, it’s not surprising thestandard of driving is abysmal in this country.

Dear Editor
OUR Minister of Transport, Elizabeth Dipuo Peters, must be feeling so proud.
South Africa has one of the worst accident rates in the world and every single new minister of transport comes in and promises the earth to try and reduce the carnage on our roads. Since this minister has taken over, nothing has changed.
We have gone away for two long weekends this year to different parts of the country. The toll plazas are responsible for incredible backups of up to 20 kilometres, both the N3 from Durban and the N1 from Polokwane.
This delay adds hours onto the journey, resulting in driver-fatigue. This also results in taxi drivers and like-minded fellow drivers to not only convert the emergency lane into another lane but also to drive up on the ground’s “middel mannetjie” for at least 10 kilometres, all the way up to the toll gate, changing a two-lane highway into a four-lane highway. Can we not speed up the plaza?
Where are the traffi c police and why aren’t they visibly involved? This act of creating lanes during long weekends is going to happen all the time, unless Elizabeth Dipuo Peters starts doing something about it! I’m sick to death of these irresponsible drivers contributing to the accident rate! This last weekend we wit-nessed numerous accidents as these shocking drivers take it upon themselves to break the law.
South Africa has some of the best legislation
in the world across the board but as usual our government neither follows, nor polices these laws. Money for these resources is apparently not available as they are used for other “more important” upgrades.
The total disregard for the law by taxi drivers and other poorly trained drivers leaves us on a downward spiral as they are found on the main roads around Johannesburg and other big centres. They are above the law and there appears to be little or no consequences for them.
Minister Peters, it seems you are sending messages to the youngsters and to drivers in general, by saying that it’s okay to break the law as nothing will happen; that it’s a challenge when you drive on the road because there’s no way drivers can be controlled; that traffi c police are only for hiding in the bushes manning a camera; that private companies are responsible to man and direct traffi c; that the blue light brigades can drive recklessly at ridiculous speeds when transporting politicians; that politicians don’t lead by example.
Elizabeth Dipuo Peters, let me help you and leave you with a quote from a famous actor: “The best car safety device is a rear-view mirror with a cop in it.” (Dudley Moore)
Very frustrated driver.

inside the cabin; I was never a fan of the older 1.4 model’s engine note.
In terms of consumption, VW claims that the DSG is more effi cient however, I found myself achieving very similar consumption fi gures in both cars, with an average of around 7.9 litres/100km on a mixed cycle.→→ DAILY USABILITYObviously, in the traffi c that we sit through every
day, the DSG would be the car that makes more sense; it’s very fuss-free, whereas the manual requires that pesky clutch work. The manual still makes for a better daily drive than the Fiesta ST though, as the ride comfort and indeed seat comfort is better in the Polo.→→ INSIDE-OUT GTIGTIs have beautiful interiors; the seats are fi nished in Alcantara, there’s leather covering on the steering wheel and soft-touch materials along with the intuitive infotainment system with Bluetooth/USB/Aux compatibility. The one strange
thing about the manual is its gear lever; it looks very cheap and out of place in such a premium interior.
The exterior does that tough juggling act that most GTIs manage; it is understated when viewed in its entirety yet, upon further inspec-tion, the sportier elements make themselves known and the look grows on you. Some might call conservative boring but there’s no denying that it’s a classy piece of work, inside and out.→→ VERDICTI am a huge fan of manual cars and I loved driv-
ing a manual performance VW again, but I cannot deny how pleasant a DSG Polo GTI is versus its manual counterpart in terms of daily use. The Polo remains the sensible choice in the small hot hatch segment, only now there’s a manual version that can give you some of the three-pedal thrills that the Fiesta ST has been providing us with for the last two years. •ad
I HAVEN’T always been a fan of the Golf GTI, I found them common and quite boring but even I cannot argue that the current GTI, both the Polo and Golf that is, are supremely capable cars. I now fi nd myself wanting a Performance Pack Golf GTI and after my experience with two Polo GTIs recently I think that I get why these cars sell in droves.→→ SIBLING RIVALRYSo now there are two Polo GTIs to choose from:
one equipped with the elusive third pedal and the other, with the ever-popular DSG gearbox. The manual GTI is some R15 000 cheaper than its DSG sibling however, as we’ve seen from the Golf GTI, the DSG seems to be the popular choice.
But what was it like having a manual in the Polo again? The pre-facelift Polo GTI was DSG-only so it was refreshing to see VW release the option again
and nice to see that on paper at least, it has some 70Nm more than the dry-clutch DSG car.→→ PERFORMANCEThe manual, with its apparent torque advantage
would probably be near identical to the DSG in a straight line race, with the DSG making up the torque defi cit with supremely fast shifts.
Where the manual does come in handy is perhaps in a more dynamic environment such as the track. You can heel-and-toe to match the revs, while the car allows you to gear down when you want to. Driving the Polo DSG around the track, you feel that the gearbox has one goal, self preservation, a good thing but a bit of a killjoy.→→ NEW ENGINE AND EFFICIENCYBoth cars are happy to rev though and chase the
redline hard, once on the boil. I did notice that the car must be kept on the boil more than the older 1.4 turbo/supercharged model as there is some lag. However, the newer motor simply feels much stronger. The newer engine sounds good too from
Polo’s GTI: DSG or manual, that’s the question

THE Toyota Corolla has been a South African favourite for a very long time.
My aunt had one many years ago and as I was so small back then, I couldn’t even see over the dashboard; all I remember is the digital clock, slap bang in the middle of the dashboard, just below the window. Several years later and the Corolla contin-ues to be a common favourite on our roads. In 2014 Toyota gave us one of the best-looking Corollas and now they’ve added some subtle updates.
The current Corolla generation features a modern design language; gone is the boring and mundane styling. This new model is easy on the eye and looks more premium than before. It is well equipped and roomy inside, with quality materials throughout.
I was given a top-of-the-range R292 300, 1.8-litre Exclusive six-speed manual to drive. So what can
you expect to fi nd on this model? Well, for start-ers, the Exclusive model features remote central locking and keyless smart entry, power mirrors and windows, an on-board computer plus a TFT multi-information display screen, automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and the touch-screen display audio incorporates AM/FM radio, a CD/DVD/MP3 player and reverse camera display. Other convenient features include an electro chromatic auto-dimming mirror, rain sensing wipers and cruise control functionality.
The dashboard is nicely laid out and follows the same design language found in other Toyota models. Some might fi nd this to be an issue, as much of the switchgear and buttons can be found in other models such as the Hilux. I don’t think it really matters though because everything works and nothing looks out of place. What’s also nice, the rear seats feature a 60:40 split, which adds to the practicality value of the car.
On the outside, the updated Corolla now features standard daytime running lights as well as a follow-me-home light control system. This means the lights stay on for a few moments after the car has been switched off, illuminating the area around you.
The 1.8-litre model that I drove develops 103kW and 173Nm; unfortunately it’s not turbocharged. If you want a forced induction variant then you would need to look at the 1.4-litre D4-D turbo diesel model. I found the 1.8-litre to be somewhat under-powered when power was needed but as far as normal cruising on the highways and in town, it was fi ne. The Corolla is very comfortable on long journeys.
This is a nice car; it’s not the best, but it does everything well. I guess that’s what has made it so popular; it’s a no-fuss way of getting around. Over the years it has proven to be reliable and tough. Now though, it also ticks the good-looks box, which should broaden its target market somewhat.

IT’S that time of the year again, when the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) Car of the Year (COTY) jury members select the fi nal-ists for the Wesbank Car of the Year competition. Over the past few years the competition has been criticized by media and the public for its decisions; last year we saw the third Porsche-win title in a row.→ → AUTODEALER NOW INVOLVEDSince I am now part of the entire process, albeit
as a trainee juror for this year, I thought I’d fi ll you in on the revisions made for this year’s competition. You might ask how a jury is selected for this. Well, this year, I was chosen to be a juror. However, I must complete my two years as a trainee before being able to take part. The voting process sees mem-bers of the SAGMJ vote to produce a jury shortlist from which the fi nal 25 (minimum) to 30 (maximum) jurors are selected.→ → THE CHANGESThere have been several changes made this
year. The fi rst alteration is that vehicle model range is up for nomination, not only one specifi c model. For example, the Ford Fusion range is in the fi nal instead of perhaps the 1.5-litre turbo automatic as might have been the case in previous years. I feel there are pros and cons to this. On the one hand, it’s representative, and not exclusively targeting one model. On the other hand, the manufactur-ers will likely give jury members the best possible models for evaluation days, meaning that as judges, they must consider the whole range and not just the top-spec model provided, which can be tough. The manufacturers are at liberty to choose the three models required for testing however, each must be identically specifi ed and therefore priced the same.
that year’s competition. This year there will only be one winner. I remember
a few years back when the BMW 5 Series and the Volkswagen Polo TDI shared the spoils. This year there won’t be a runner-up, only the winner will be announced but a full analysis of the scoring will be published. The scoring is also different; the vehicles will be scored in categories, with judges providing points for value-for-money; exterior design; interior design and practicality; safety; handling and dynamics; performance and overall excel-lence. A statistical weighting will be introduced per •ad
category, as well. → → WHEN DOES IT GO DOWN?The competition has begun with the fi nalists
being selected already. The offi cial testing days start in February 2016 with on-road evaluations the fi rst day, followed by intense testing at Ger-otek the following day. The winner will then be announced at the WesBank Awards Banquet in March 2016.
