The Dusty Rebels and the Bombshells show descended on Pretoria on Saturday afternoon. Die stryd oor Pretoria se ou straatname duur voort nadat die Tshwane-metro besluit het om weer die Appèlhof oor die saak te nader.

Verlede week het die Hooggeregshof in Pretoria gelas dat al die ou straatname weer neffens die nuwes vertoon moet word.

Dit moet voor 1 Augustus gebeur, het die hof beveel.

AfriForum, wat die hof-aansoek gebring het, sê die uitspraak was nog ’n oorwinning in sy uitgerekte stryd vir die behoud van geskiedkundige straatname in Pretoria.

Tshwane-burgemeester Kgosientso Ramokgopa meen die hofbeslissing sal nie die toets van grondwetlikheid slaag nie.

Hy sê die uitspraak maak inbreuk op die administratiewe gesag van die metro.

“Ons het besluit om weereens ’n appèl voor ’n volle regbank van die Appèlhof te bring oor die saak en ons glo dat die stad ’n kans gegun sal word om sy saak te stel.”

In verlede Dinsdag se beslissing het ’n vol bank van drie regters van die Hoog-geregshof die Tshwane-metro se appèl teen ’n vroeëre hofbevel oor die name van die hand gewys.

Die vroeëre bevel het gelas dat die raad die ou straatname saam met die nuwes moet behou, hangende die afhandeling van ’n hersieningsaksie deur AfriForum.

Die aanvanklike bevel op 19 April 2013 deur Regter Bill Prinsloo het bepaal dat die ou name binne 60 dae teruggeplaas moet word.

Die name moet dus teen 1 Augustus van-jaar regoor die hoofstad teruggesit word.

Werner Human, AfriForum se regsver-teenwoordiger, sê Dinsdag se uitspraak is nie net ’n oorwinning vir AfriForum nie.

“Dit is ook ’n oorwinning vir almal wat gekant is teen die kulturele vandalisme wat die Tshwane-metroraad gepleeg het deur spe sifi ek straatname met ’n besondere kul tuur-historiese waarde vir Afrikaners en ander minderhede, te teiken in die naams-veranderingsproses.”

Human sê die raad het kwaadwillig opgetree deur destyds binne ’n week al die ou straatnaambordjies te verwyder na die nuus dat AfriForum ’n bevel wou kry om te verseker dat die ou naamborde behou word.

“Dit is daarom gepas dat die hof ’n be-straffende kostebevel teen die metro gegee het. AfriForum glo die metro moet wys dat hy die ou borde met dieselfde spoed kan terugplaas as waarmee hy dit verwyder het.”

Kallie Kriel, uitvoerende beampte van AfriForum, sê: “Een van die regters het gesê die metro se skuif om die naambordjies destyds te verwyder, grens aan dwarsboming van die gereg.”

Kriel is baie positief oor die terugplaas van die ou name.

“Ek glo die koste verbonde daaraan sal nie te erg wees nie, omdat die bordjies reeds bestaan. Daar was die afgelope tyd baie ver-warring met die nuwe name wat nie op GPS koördinatestelsels te vind was nie,” sê Kriel.

“Die terugsit van hierdie bordjies sal enige verdere verwarring uitskakel.”

Comrades stars Caroline Wöstmann and Charné Bosman were hosted by acting Tshwane mayor Eulenda Mabusela on Wednesday.

Anointing them ambassadors for the city, she congratulated Wöstmann for winning the women’s race and Bosman for taking second place in the 90th Com-rades marathon.

“We are proud of your achievement as it symbolises our own mantra of igniting

excellence,” Mabusela said.She said the two put Pretoria on the

international map through their diligence and hard work.

“That is an achievement to be cel-ebrated. We hope to work with you in the near future as we strive to build an inclusive, resilient and liveable city.”

Pretoria residents have been warned to take extra care against the cold and wet weather invading the interior of the country.

Tshwane emergency services spokesper-son Johan Pieterse said school children and people living in informal settlements were especially vulnerable.

“Low temperatures and strong winds are expected to be around for quite some time.”

The South African Weather service has predicted even colder conditions later in the week.

Forecaster Lulama Theme said fi ne conditions were expected for Monday and Tuesday with maximums reaching highs of 21°C and 22°C respectively, but tempera-tures were expected to drop on Wednesday.

“This is due to a cold pressure system which affects the west coast and the wes-tern interior. Temperatures at a minimum of 5°C and a maximum of 17°C were expected

for Wednesday with a 30 percent chance of rain,” he said.

He said the cool conditions and a chance of rain were expected until Thursday.

No rain was expected for the weekend, he said. “Temperatures will remain cool, rang-ing between 17°C and 20°C.”

Pieterse shared some tips on how to stay warm and safe in the cold:

· Wear very warm clothing.· Stay indoors or in a warm area.· Ensure enough blankets are available.· Extinguish all open fi res once you leave

the area.· Ensure there is enough ventilation if

fi res are made indoors to prevent smoke inhalation.

Described as having a heart of gold, Agnes ‘Aggy’ Tlaatla from Soshanguve went out of her way to fi nd the owner of a wallet fi lled with money, which she had picked up in Wonder Park shopping centre.

Tlaatla, wife and a mother of one, worked as the guest relations offi cer of the centre and it is her responsibility to make every shopper feel like a guest.

Tlaatla helped return Marinda du Preez’s wallet last Thursday when it was dropped in the centre. “She went beyond the call of duty to trace the woman,” said Kaylene Markley, Wonder Park’s regional marketing manager.

Markley said Tlaatla was a gleam of positivity and has given herself the title ‘face of Wonder Park’ because she recognised that good service should remain top priority for any business.

“We value the service she rendered at the centre – not only to the customers but she adds great value to the management team with her positivity and the pride that she has in her job,” Markley said.

Du Preez, a Menlyn resident, said she was on her way to a funeral in Pretoria North when she stopped at the shopping centre for coffee. “I did not even realise that I had lost my wallet in the bathroom. During the funeral I received several missed calls. After the service I phoned the number and discovered that Agnes had my wallet. I had money, bank cards, identifi cation document, driver’s licence and much more in the wallet and not a single item was misplaced,” an impressed Du Preez said.

A thankful Du Preez said it was hard to believe that there were still so much honesty in a person. “She even went to my bank to trace my cellphone number. I am forever grateful,” she said.

After Du Preez retrieved her wallet she took to social media and praised Tlaatla for her good deed. Nearly 50 people responded with encouraging messages and thanking her for her honesty.

Tlaatla was overwhelmed by the feed-back. “I am overwhelmed that people are making such a fuss about this. I was only doing my job,” laughed Tlaatla.

Dit het omstreeks 08:30 gebeur. Aandui-dings is dat die tuig aan die brand geslaan het toe dit die grond tref.

Dawie du Toit, eienaar van Rosslyn Micro Flyers, sê Makhanya het oor die radio gesê dat sy mikrotuig buite beheer is.

“Ons weet nie wat skeefgeloop het nie. Hy het nog vyf vlieg-ure gekort om te kwali-fi seer vir sy vlieglisensie.

Makhanya was ’n Tanzaniese burger, wat sedert Februarie deel van die vliegskool is. Sy ouers sou Dinsdagaand in Suid-Afrika aankom om sy lyk huis toe te bring.

Intussen is ’n soektog na ’n vlerksweef-tuig in die Magaliesberg, wes van Pretoria, van stapel gestuur.

Hercules se GPF-voorsitter, Conrad Naudé, sê hy het Saterdag nuus ontvang dat

’n sweeftuig moontlik in die omgewing van die radio-torings geval het.

“Phillip Nel Park-brandweer het bystand van Rope Rescue gevra en die polisie-lug-vleuel se hulp is ook ingeroep,” sê Naudé.

Hy sê twee privaatmaatskappye van die omgewing het hul helikopters ingespan en gehelp met die soektog.

“Verskeie inwoners van Sektor 1, 2, 3 en 4 het deelgeneem aan die soektog teen die hange van die berg. Teen laatskemer is die soektog afgelas toe geen tekens gevind is dat daar ’n ongeluk was nie,” vertel Naudé.

“Die brandweer het ook met die vlieg-klubs in die omgewing geskakel en geen persoon of mikro-vliegtuig is as vermis aangemeld nie.”

Naudé sê teen Sondagoggend was daar nog geen teken van ’n vlerksweeftuig wat geval het nie. ’n Paar inwoners het die gebied te voet gefynkam, maar kon ook geen teken vind dat daar ’n ongeluk was nie.

“Baie dankie aan almal wat betrokke was in die soektog, veral aan die twee sake-eienaars vir hul positiewe bydrae tot die soektog,” sê Naudé. Hy versoek dat enigie-mand met meer inligting GPF-voorsitter Conrad Naudé skakel by 082-921-3744 of die Hercules-polisie by 012-377-4100.

Met die winter op hande en die algemene voorkoms van droë materiaal, blare en gras, doen die Sinoville-brandbestrydingsvereni-ging (SBBV) ’n beroep op plaaslike inwo-ners om versigtig te wees wanneer hulle afval in hul erwe verbrand.

“Die SBBV word gereeld ontplooi na brande in nabygeleë veldjies en parke. Brande ontstaan veral in die landelike omgewing waar werkers vuurmaak om die koue te verdryf of deur wagtende passasiers by taxi-staanplekke en by parke in woonge-biede,” sê SBBV woordvoerder Zenobia Loock-du Plessis.

Sy sê inwoners kan help om brande te voorkom en ook oortreders aan te meld om veiligheid te bevorder. “Beheerde brande sal altyd met toesig van ’n brandspan bestuur word. Moet dus nie aanvaar dat ’n veldbrand

onder beheer is nie. Wees op die uitkyk vir mense met die nodige toerusting en refl ek-torbaadjies,” maan Loock.

Twee haweloses het onlangs vuur langs ’n elektriese kragkas gemaak, maar weens die fl inke optrede van inwoners en SBBV-lede kon dit geblus word voordat daar enige skade aangerig is. Die SBBV het die gevare met die haweloses bespreek.

Loock du Plessis sê inwoners in die noorde van Pretoria moet besef dat samewerking tussen hulle en die forums noodsaaklik is. “Dit is ons verantwoorde-likheid om ons gebied veilig te hou, hoewel ons ’n groot tekort aan mannekrag het wat vrywillig bystaan.”

Die SBBV doen ’n beroep op inwoners om by die groep betrokke te raak. Belang-stellendes kan die webtuiste by

besoek of 071-409-9251 skakel vir meer inligting.

Sinoville-brandbestrydingsvereniging (SBBV) sê die publiek se bydrae kan help om brande te voorkom en ook oortreders aan te meld om veiligheid te bevorder.

Die oud-polisieman van Pretoria wat onlangs deur twee rowers oorval en geskiet is, sterk goed aan.

Danie Robbertse (43) se verloofde, Aman-da Brooks, sê daar is verlede Donderdag op sy regterbeen en linkerarm geopereer om die skade te herstel.

“Die dokters moes penne insit omdat die been en arm sleg gebreek het. Ek is nie seker of hulle die koeël uit die been kon verwyder nie, maar die dokters kon nie die een in sy arm verwyder nie omdat dit te naby aan ’n senuwee was. Hulle is bang Danie verloor die gebruik van sy arm as hulle dit verwyder,” het Brooks gesê.

Sy sê afgesien van die operasies gaan dit onder die omstandighede goed met Rob-bertse. Hy is tans in die dr. George Mukhari-hospitaal, Ga-Rankuwa. “Danie sou hierdie week onstlaan word, maar dokters wil eers hê hy moet fi sioterapie kry. Hulle kyk baie mooi

Intussen het Brooks die rower met ’n plank geslaan en hom met ’n klein bankie gegooi in die hoop om die rower van haar verloofde af te kry.

Brooks sê die aanvaller het opgespring en na die kombuistafel gehardloop en Harmse se tablet en handsak gegryp. Van daar af is hy na ’n slaapkamer waar hy die paartjie se selfone gesteel het.

Terwyl die rower in die huis rondgehard-loop het op soek na waardevolle items, het sy makker wat buite was, steeds skote afgevuur.

Albei rowers het spoorloos verdwyn.

’n Wonderboom-egpaar vier op 29 Junie hul 61e huweliksherdenking saam met hul sewe kinders en nege kleinkinders.

Paul en Mossie Greyling, wat al 38 jaar in dieselfde Wonderboom-huis woon, sedert hulle in 1954 op Krugersdorp getroud is, sê hul geheim vir ’n gelukkige huwelik is ‘baie genade’.

“Die praktiese uitlewing van Christelike beginsels en baie genade,” het die egpaar aan Rekord gesê.

Volgens een van die paartjie se dogters, Willemien Calitz, het haar ouers nog nooit gedink aan trek nie, omdat haar pa voel die familie het ’n bekende sentrale plek nodig

waar almal bymekaar kan kom.Calitz vind inspirasie by haar ouers wat

almal met respek behandel. “Dit was ’n baie belangrike komponent in ons lewens en omdat hulle altyd almal met respek behandel het, het ons ook altyd mense gerespekteer.”

Die egpaar het mekaar in 1950 as stu-dente aan die Potchefstroomse onderwyskol-lege ontmoet voordat hulle vier jaar later getroud is.

“Iets wat vir my uitstaan van hul huwe-lik, is die ooglopende liefde wat hulle vir mekaar het en die menswees wat hulle vir mekaar gun,” sê Calitz.

Die egpaar beplan om hierdie jaar hul huweliksherdenking met ’n rustige familie-byeenkoms te vier.Paul en Mossie Greyling sal eersdaags hul 61e huweliksherdenking vier.

Arno Malan het vir jare video-speletjies aan Pretoria-inwoners verkoop en het baie geld uit die verslawing van ander gemaak, maar nou het hy alles verkoop.

Hy beweeg nou van kerk-tot-kerk en skool-tot-skool om kinders teen die invloed van satan in dié speletjies te waarsku.

Hy het tot sowat twee weke gelede ’n baie winsgewende onderneming uit sy huis in Trouwstraat, Capital Park bedryf – maar sy winkel is nou gesluit en hy het die gevaar-likste speletjies waaronder Assasin’s Creed, Grand Theft Auto 5 en selfs Sims in stukke gesny – die res het hy verkoop om ’n DVD Aanslag van satan deur ‘video-games’ te vervaardig en op te neem.

Hy versprei dit gratis by skole en kerke waar hy ouers en kinders teen die gevare waarsku.

“Ek het nie meer ’n besigheid of ’n inkom-ste nie, maar ek weet daar gaan vir my gesorg word,” het Malan Donderdag aan Rekord vertel.

“My laaste geld is in die maak van die DVD’s (in Engels en Afrikaans) in.”

Sy rakke, wat eens volgepak was met die jongste speletjies, is nou leeg. CD’s waar-onder die van die reine Bles Bridges staan nog sy rakke vol.

Malan lyk soos ’n doodgewone Afrikaanse boere-oom wat nie sommer die duiwel agter elke bos sal uitskop nie, maar hy het in 2009 begin navorsing doen oor die gevare van die speletjies en wat hy bevind het, het sy hare laat rys.

“Selfs ’n onskuldige speletjie soos Barbie skep ’n beeld van ’n perfekte vrou en ’n perfekte wêreld waar dogtertjies leer om net te partytjie,” sê hy.

Baie min navorsing is nog in Suid-Afrika gedoen oor video-speletjieverslawing, maar in Amerika is daar mense soos Brad Huddles-ton wat boeke geskryf het en TV-programme aanbied oor dié verslawing en die subtiele

satanistiese manipulasie wat in die speletjies voorkom.

Selfs ’n slimfoon-speletjie soos Candy Crush se gevolge is vernietigend, sê Malan. “Minute word ure en as ’n mens weer sien het jy ’n hele werksdag deur Candy Crush gespeel.”

Toe nie so onskuldig nie.In Suid-Afrika is daar streng wetgewing

wat verspreiders verplig om duidelike ou-derdomsbeperkings op speletjies aan te bring.

“Ouers steur hulle egter nie daaraan nie en groot verspreiders nog minder. Ek was nou die dag by ’n bekende winkelsentrum in Pretoria waar kinders die nuwe Playstation in ’n winkel getoets het.

“Die speletjie wat hul gespeel het, het ’n ouderdomsbeperking van 12, maar daar is verwysings na satan en ander simbole wat hulle manipuleer.”

Grand Theft Auto, wat ’n ouderdomsbe-perking van 18 het, word deur kinders so jonk as ses gespeel,” sê Malan.

The Way spoke of the way believers followed Jesus, who is The Way - the Only Way that leads to eternal life.

Faith in this Way is the life force behind every Christian. Every believer wants to please God and Hebrews 11:6 says: “With-out faith it is impossible to please Him.”

If you cannot please God, then the es-sence of your Christianity is defeated.

You would then fi nd yourself faithless in the faith. To be faithless is to be sinful, because Romans 14:23 says: “Whatso-ever is not of faith is sin.”

The Word of faith is God’s tool for liberation; faith is able to set people free. No wonder the enemy works so hard to attack people’s faith.

In Luke 22:31 & 32 we read that Jesus spoke this to Peter: “Satan has asked to have you, to sift you like wheat, but I have pleaded in prayer for you that your faith will not completely fail” (The Living Bible).

The enemy wanted to destroy Peter’s faith so that he could destroy him utterly, and that is what he wants to do to every believer.

Right now, Jesus is at the right hand of God the Father and He is praying for you that in your time of trials your faith will not fail. Remember faith is for liberation, for exploits, for battles and therefore liv-ing faith is in the heart (your heart is your

spirit). The heart is faith’s medium of opera-

tion.If you are going to utter words of faith,

the substance of these words must fi rst be in your heart. What you speak must agree with what is in your heart. So if you speak forth and you have no substance of what you say in your heart, then your heart is

not in agreement with your words.

You are therefore releasing empty words.

“Faith comes by hearing and hear-ing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17) God’s Word is spirit and life (John 6:63). Learn to give voice to God’s Word and

your faith will grow.In doing so you will please God as the

force of faith carries you every day. The force of faith will carry you over

every mountain and through every valley and you will be more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus.

Die slimmeter-projek is nou van die baan, maar ons sit steeds met een van die 12 000 en die stroomafgevolge. Op 1 Junie was ons kragverbruik veel hoër as voorheen.

Die situasie is soos volg: Nersa het twee seisoene goedgekeur waarvolgens slimme-tergebruikers in Pretoria aangeslaan word – ’n sogenaamde lae-seisoen (September tot Mei) en ’n hoë-seisoen (Junie tot Augustus). Min mense weet daarvan.

Binne elke seisoen is daar drie tarief-strukture vir elke dag van die week: weeksdae is buite spitstyd (22:00-06:00), standaardtyd (06:00-07:00, 10:00-18:00 en 20:00-22:00) en spitstyd (07:00-10:00 en 18:00-20:00).

Die slimmeters pas die drie tariewe outomaties toe. Min is bewus daarvan. Vir die hoë-seisoen (vanaf 1 Junie), word die lae-seisoentariewe soos volg “aangepas”: Die buite spitstarief verhoog met 16%.

Die standaardtarief verhoog met 52% (die

helfte meer). Die spitstarief verhoog met 357% (drie-en-’n-half keer meer).

Hierdie verhogings is deur Nersa goed-gekeur en word bloot deur die Tshwane-metro toegepas. By navraag aan Nersa, sê die persoon dat hulle my klagte in die 2016 boekjaar sal bespreek.

My reaksie was: “Dis nie nodig nie, want hierdie tariewe gaan klein besighede soos ons so erg knou, dat julle volgende jaar geen verdere probleme met ons gaan hê nie. Ons sal doodeenvoudig nie meer bestaan nie.”

Geen reaksie daarop nie. Intussen gee Eskom en Nersa voor dat hulle tog so hard probeer om die land se ekonomie nie te skaad nie. Hierdie soort aksie bewys die teendeel en laat regdenkende mense stomge-slaan.

Is daar iemand wat iets hieraan kan doen, of is dit ’n gegewe wat die metergebrui-kers van die metro maar net moet sluk, soos soveel ander dinge? ’n Vriend van my het ’n heel paslike gesegde wat hier van toepass-ing is: “The difference between genius and stupidity is: genius has limits”. Hierdie is ’n sprekende voorbeeld daarvan.

Child Welfare Tshwane (originally Kinder- en Gesinsorgvereniging van Pretoria) was founded in 1918 by volunteers who were concerned about orphans and vulnerable children in Pretoria and

surroundings. In 1923 foster care ser-vices was established, followed by a children’s home in Pretoria West under the governance of Child Welfare Tshwane. The Children’s home was ex-tended to cater for 60 children. It was moved to Groenkloof where the site was dona ted to

build a children’s home – cottage system.Since then, the children were under the care of ordinary citizens who provided a compassionate, loving environment. Child Welfare Tshwane works with all children in the Pretoria area.What are the objectives of the organisa-tion?Vision and purpose: To provide a safe home environment for every child in Tshwane. Our focus is to protect children and ensure they have the opportunity to reach their full potential. MC Rian van Heerden from Jacaranda FM announced the speakers, who included managing director of SPAR North Rand, Desmond Borrageiro, Mrs South Africa Sarah-Kate Scott, and Dianne Broodryk and Robbie Kruse, both from Jacaranda FM.

Borrageiro challenged guests to get moti-vated for the upcoming SPAR Ladies Race taking place on Saturday, 29 August.

“Write down what you’re going to be stepping out for on race day, and let that be a motivation to be there and fi nish the race,” he said.

The launch featured a short performance by singers MoniQue and Willem Botha and the introduction of Frikkie Fiksheid (Bouwer Bosch of Straatligkindersfaam), who moti-vated the guests to get ready for the race.

In these days of online listings and video tours accessible even from a cellphone, home sellers may question the value of show days – but they should know these events are still among the most effective to market real estate.

In fact, says Jan Davel, MD of the Real-Net estate agency group, serious sellers should ensure their agent holds at least one show day as soon as possible after listing, to give keen buyers the oppor-tunity to view the home in person and envisage themselves living there.

“A show day also tends to be a more relaxed environment for prospective buyers in which they feel less self-conscious about asking questions and having a really good look at the property than during a pri-vate viewing when the seller will most likely be present,” he says.

“The biggest advantage of a show day,

though, is it gives you an opportunity to show your home at its best to many prospec-tive buyers at a time, and hopefully generate several offers to purchase, once they have seen it.

“Indeed, multiple offers are quite com-mon at the moment because of the shortage of homes for sale in popular areas – and this can save you weeks of ‘tidying up’ every

time your agent needs to bring an individual buyer round for a private view-ing.”

In addition, a show day early in the marketing process is an opportunity for the agent and the seller to get ‘live feedback’ from prospective buyers that will help to validate the current asking price – or

enable the seller to make a quick adjustment if necessary to bring it in line with what buy-ers in the area are actually prepared to pay.

“In some cases it can also help the seller to determine what needs to be done to the property to make it more appealing and sale-

‘‘able.” But it must be said, not every agent can handle a show day correctly.

“There really is a lot more to it than being on site and handing out business cards.”

To maximise the opportunity, a show day needs to be publicised properly, security ar-rangements need to be put in place, and the

agent needs to distinguish between visitors who are really interested and those who are just nosy.

“This is another reason for sellers to en-sure they work only with properly qualifi ed agents who are experienced and have a track record of good results,” Davel says.

With buy-to-let investors and new rental stock both being in short supply, it is be-coming increasingly diffi cult for prospec-tive tenants to secure the homes they want – especially if they have a less-than-great credit history.

So says Shaun Rademeyer, CEO of BetterBond Home Loans, who notes: “SA landlords are quite understandably cautious when letting their properties to new tenants because legislation such as the PIE Act and the Consumer Protection Act make it diffi cult for them to dislodge those tenants even if they default on their rent or damage the property.

“To limit their risk, the fi rst thing most landlords or managing agents will do now is draw a credit report to establish whether the prospective tenants have a history of paying their bills on time and in full, and whether they have any current major debts outstanding or debt judgments against their names.”

Therefore, a blemished credit record can become just as big an impediment to renting a property as it is to obtaining a home loan with which to buy a property, and prospective tenants may need to work just as hard as prospective buyers to clean up and improve their records, even if they have a good income and can put down a big rental deposit. Some suggestions for doing

so include the following:- Stay on top of your ac-

counts and installments and make sure you make all the payments early or on due date every month. This may sound basic but it is the simplest way to show that you man-age money well and are responsible about meeting your credit obligations.

Remember it is not enough to make the payments ‘sometime’ during the month they are due because if they are not paid on or before the actual due date they will show up as late payments.

- Do not only pay the mini-mum balances due on your accounts each month. Bring down the debt load you are carrying by upping your monthly pay-ments – which can also save you interest – and then systematically apply any spare cash you have to paying those accounts off completely.

- Seek out and accept any offer of new credit sparingly, to keep your credit-utilisation rate to the minimum.

What landlords want to see is that your monthly income is not currently mostly committed to debt repayments, and that you tend only to use credit for serious purchas-es, like a car to get to and from work.

- To demonstrate you can use credit

responsibly, you must keep your spending on cards under control and not run them up back to the limit every time you have made a payment.

If you cannot do this, it is better not to

have them.- Check your own credit

report at least once a year – and more if you are working on improving your credit score. Consider what it will look like to a prospective landlord and what more you can do to improve it.

Downsizing from a large, freestanding property to a smaller, more manageable unit within a retirement estate can provide several lifestyle benefi ts for those who are planning to retire.

This is according to Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa.

A smaller home is easier to maintain and gives the owner freedom to be able to lock-up-and-go any time of the year without worrying about maintenance or upkeep of a property.

“While a home with features such as a large garden or swimming pool is ideal for homeowners with growing children, these features cost money and take up a lot of time to maintain,” says Goslett.

“Downsizing will give the retiree more time to pursue other interests and will have the added bonus of signifi cantly reducing monthly costs of rates and taxes, utility bills, insurance and security as well as maintenance and repair costs.”

However, downsizing a property for retirement is not simply a matter of sell-ing a large property and buying a smaller one.

“Over the years it is natural to collect things and buy furniture and items that fi t a larger home. Reducing the size of a home will also mean reducing the amount

of items that can be moved into the smaller space,” explains Goslett.

“It is important to pare down on pos-sessions where possible. While a daunting exercise, any home needs to be declutter-ed regardless of whether a homeowner is downsizing or placing their home on the market.”

According to Goslett, there are a few steps to help homeowners downsize effi -ciently and prepare them for the move:

“It is best to start approximately three months before moving day and tackle one room at a time. This will be far less tax-ing than trying to tackle the entire house in a shorter period of time,” advises Goslett.

pile as this means dealing with items more than once. He says if possible, homeowners should try to deal with each item only once and decide whether to keep it or get rid of it.

This may seem diffi cult, especially for those who struggle to let go, but ask whether the item could be replaced if lost or how often it really gets used.

Mastering the art of property investment could be very rewarding fi nancially. However, says Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, entering into the world of property investment can be intimidating, not to men-tion risky.

“In every phase of the property market there are opportunities available to investors, provided they are well-versed and undertake the necessary research,” says Goslett.

“Without putting in the time and effort it requires, property investors could fi nd them-selves making the wrong and sometimes very costly decisions. Seasoned and success-ful property investors could only reach their full potential by having a vast understanding of the property market and the factors that infl uence it.”

Knowing what to look for and what to avoid will increase investors’ chances of success and will ultimately impact on their investment returns.

Goslett gives some property investment principles to help guide investors to making the correct decision:

There is no need to rush into any investment.

Rather take the time to do the appropri-ate research, than rush into a deal that could cost you as the investor a lot of money in

the long-term. When it comes to property investment there is no blissful ignorance – knowledge is the key to success.

The more knowledge and information an investor has, the better equipped they will be to recognise a good opportunity.

Goslett notes there is no need for inves-tors to take the fi rst deal coming their way. They can take their time, shop around and compare other properties that are available before making any fi nal decisions.

Investors would do well to look at the price of the property and compare this to the value. This could easily be achieved through working with an estate agent and ask-ing them to provide a comparative market analysis.

Most people know this mantra, and there is good reason for it. Location really is just about every-thing when it comes to the investment poten-tial of any property.

Regardless of the property’s condition or type, its location will be the determining factor as to how much the home’s value will appreciate. It is imperative for an investor to choose the right location over any other factors.

Good options are areas in proximity to a good range of amenities. Areas consistently showing steady growth in value are those

near business nodes, transport routes, good schools and shopping centres.

While the law protects property buyers to some degree, it is never a good idea to assume everything in the pro-perty checks out just by looking at it.

Goslett says investors should have any property professionally inspected before the purchase agreement is signed.

“A professional inspector will be able to spot any defects that may otherwise go unnoticed, such as the structural integrity of the property.

“While it may cost money to hire an inspector, knowing about any costly defects the property has may infl uence the purcha-sing decision and price,” says Goslett.

“Having to fi x any defects that were not discovered will only eat into possible returns.”

If in doubt, ask for help. It might be tempting to make your mark and go at it alone, but it is far better to learn from other people’s mistakes than your own.

“Ek het baie pret gehad. Ek hou van rugby speel.”

For the second year running, the Free State Crinums snatched a win in extra time, beating the Gauteng Jaguars by 61 goals to 59 to win the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League on Sunday. It was almost a replay of last year’s fi nal, with the Jaguars, who led for much of the match, losing in the dying minutes of the game.

The match was played at pace with both teams turning the ball on frequent occasions.

Crinums goal attack Karla Mos-tert once again showed her extraor-dinary skill, creating intercepts and turnovers, while her fellow SPAR Protea, Shadine van der Merwe, did the same at the other end of the court for the Jaguars.

Crinums captain Maryka Holtzhausen was somewhat sub-dued, but proved as accurate as ever, while the Jaguars pair of Lenize Potgieter and Melissa Myburgh kept their cool until the last few minutes, when they both started missing their shots. And it cost them dearly as the Crinums averaged 85% of their 72 attempts outscoring the Jaguars who could only muster 74% of their 80 attempts.

The Jaguars led by three goals after the fi rst quarter, but at halftime, the teams were level on 28-all.

For much of the third quarter, goals went with the centre pass, but the Jaguars crept ahead by one goal at the end of the quarter.

Midway through the fi nal quarter, a brilliant turnover by Van der Merwe gave the Jaguars the advan-tage, and they scored three quick unanswered goals.

But a mistake in the Jaguars cir-cle saw the Crinums come back and when the fi nal whistle was blown, the two sides were level on 48-all.

The Jaguars took charge in the fi rst period of extra time, and

seemed to have the game in the bag, fi nishing 56-52 ahead.

In the fi nal period of extra time, goals were once again scored ac-cording to the centre pass, until the usually serene Lenize Potgieter missed a relatively easy shot.

Mostert snatched the ball and the Crinums seized the moment to make their move. They caught up with the Jaguars and then the two Gauteng North shooters made a crucial error as they tried to pass the ball across the circle.

Once again, the Crinums pounced and scored at the other end, and then scored again.

The cheers from the crowd, which appeared to be equally di-vided between Jaguars and Crinums supporters, were deafening, and the fi nal whistle was almost an anti-cli-max as the Crinums jumped for joy and the Jaguars shed a few tears.

“We never stopped believing

in ourselves,” said Crinums coach Burta de Kock. “Our slogan for this tournament has been ‘Grit and Pas-sion’, and we showed that today.

“It was a real team effort, and they showed superb big match tem-perament. The just never gave up,” she said.

Jaguars coach Jenny van Dyk said she was deeply disappointed, but very proud of her players.

“They played their hearts out, and I know we will do it one day. Some of them are very young – Lenize is only 20 years old, and she’s up against someone as experienced as Adele Niemand,” she said.

“The Crinums won fair and square. It was our own mistakes that cost us the match. Maryka was on fi re today, and she is such a good leader, so she made things diffi cult for us. We will go back and refocus, and we won’t make the same mis-takes again,” said Van Dyk.

The offi cial launch of the Pretoria leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge was held at Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria last week and entries are now open for this race.

The Pretoria race, which attracts a whop-ping 25 000 avid runners each year, is the biggest and most popular race in the SPAR Women’s Challenge Grand Prix series.

The theme for this year’s race is “Step-ping for...” This concept builds on the “My shoes, your shoes” theme from last year which challenged runners to think about what it means to walk in another woman’s shoes.

The ‘Stepping for…’ theme is being backed by a social media campaign under the hashtag #SteppingFor. The campaign appeals to all women running for a cause or stepping up for someone who cannot take part in the race to share their stories on the SPAR Women’s Challenge Pretoria Face-book page.

The popularity of the Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge Pretoria leg has soared over recent years and has attracted the at-tention of local celebrities and community leaders. This is evident by the extensive list of brand ambassadors who are playing their part in promoting this year’s race.

A percentage of the proceeds from the race will be divided among SPAR’s 2015 benefi ciaries – the Chrysalis foundation, the Jacaranda Good Morning Angels, Helpnet, The Zoleka Mandela foundation, Stand With Stan, Hanna Charity and Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer.

As always, the race will offer women the opportunity to enter for a 5km or a 10km race, with the 10km challenge forming part of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Grand Prix Series, with cash prizes for the more

advanced athletes. Several local artists will entertain the

crowd with live performances on race day and will set the stage for the handover of SPAR’s donations to the race benefi ciaries. On the day, all entrants will receive a goodie bag fi lled with wonderful products and all runners to cross the fi nish line will receive a medal, compliments of SPAR and the race sponsors.

Een van die legendes van klubrugby in Pretoria, brig. Deon Boardman, is vroeër vandeesweek oorlede.

Boardman het al geruime tyd ’n stryd gevoer teen motorneuron siekte (MNS), die-selfde siekte waaraan die gewese Springbok skrumskakel, Joost van der Westhuizen ook ly. Hy was 62 jaar oud.

Hy word veral in die geledere van die departement korrektiewe dienste onthou as ’n rugby-legende.

Korrektiewe dienste se rugbyklub in Pretoria het hul beste prestasie ooit onder sy leiding as afrigter behaal, toe hulle in 1993 vir die eerste keer in hul geskiedenis die Blou Bulle se gesogte Carltonbeker-liga kon wen.

Die klub het hierdie prestasie in 2001 herhaal, maar teen daardie tyd het klubrugby in Pretoria reeds erg agteruitgegaan.

Boardman en sy span se prestasie in 1993 is behaal toe rugby nog ’n amateurspel was en provinsiale spelers ook nog klubrugby moes speel.

Nadat hy vir baie jare self as speler vir die destydse gevangenisdiens, die Noord-Transvaalse B-span en die voormalige Oos-

Transvaal (deesdae die Valke) uitgeblink het, het Boardman hom tot afrigting gewend. Hy was intussen ook ’n puik krieketspeler.

Boardman was een van die gewildste afrigters ooit by die korrektiewe dienste- rugbyklub, wat ook in die vroeër jare by hul teenstanders as “Die Groen Dood” bekend gestaan het.

Die span het hierdie bynaam verwerf weens hul klipharde speelstyl, asook die wyse waarop hulle as deel van hul wedstryd-plan teenstanders bang kon speel met hul hoogskop-en-storm taktiek.

In die vroeë 1990’s het Boardman ook die Blou Bulle se B-span afgerig en in dieselfde era was hy vir ’n tyd lank die sameroeper van die senior keurkomitee op Loftus Versfeld.

Nadat hy die departement korrektiewe dienste verlaat het, het hy hom vir jare op sy nuwe loopbaan by ’n bekende IT-maatskap-py toegespits, voordat hy in 2012 weer deur die Tshwane Universiteit van Tegnologie (TUT) nadergetrek is om hul Varsitybeker-rugbyspan af te rig.

Weens sy verswakte gesondheid het Boardman se terugkeer na rugby in die nuwe professionele era net enkele seisoene geduur, maar sy kennis van die spel en sy vermoëns

Centurion se groot oorwinning oor Ooste-likes het die afgelope naweek bevestig dat twee duidelike groepe besig is om te vorm op die puntelys in dié toernooi.

Met dié oorwinning het Centurion hom-self saam met Tukkies en Polisie onderskei as die boonste groep, wat waarskynlik sake sal uitspook om vanjaar se kampioen te bepaal.

Die onderste groep, wat Oostelikes, Harlequins, TUT en Naka Bulle insluit, sal waarskynlik in die tweede ronde in ’n taai stryd gewikkel wees om die vierde kandidaat te wees in die halfeindronde van die reeks.

* Centurion het sewe drieë ingeryg in hul laaste wedstryd in die eerste ronde van vanjaar se toernooi teen Oostelikes.

Hul opwindende jong losskakel, Jean Grobler, het boonop al sewe die drieë ver-doel. Daarenteen het Oostelikes ’n enkele drie gedruk, wat die eindtelling op 49-5 te staan gebring het.

Hoewel Oostelikes steeds vierde op die punteleer is aan die einde van die eerste ronde, sal hulle baie beter moet doen in die res van die seisoen as hulle ernstige kandi-date vir die halfeindronde wil bly.

Grobler is nou die voorste puntemaker in die reeks. Op 85 punte is hy tans 23 punte voor Dillon Laubscher van Polisie.

* Een van die spanne wat al hoe sterker na vore tree om Oostelikes opdraande te gee vir daardie vierde plek op die punteleer is Harlequins.

Dié klub speel weekliks goeie rugby en met hul oorwinning van 35-23 oor TUT het hulle die afgelope naweek weer volpunte in die liga verdien.

Die manne in die Blokkiestruie se losskakel, Paul Walters, is ook besig om sterk na vore te tree en sy giftige skopskoen het Saterdag die verskil gemaak vir sy span. Albei spanne het vier drieë gedruk, maar Walters kon die telbord beter aan die rol hou met sy skopvoet as sy teenstander van TUT, Phillip Snyman.
