Thirty Ramstein Airmen recently embarked on a long journey to the southern region of Africa to share some of their knowledge with their counterparts from the Botswana Defense Force.

The team of pilots, navigators, flight engineers, loadmasters and personnel from security forces, supply and public affairs traveled for two days on a pair of C-130s assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron. They first landed in Botswana for a four-day stay before going on to Cape Town, South Africa, to participate in an air show.

“We are here on what’s called a theater security cooperation event,” said Col. Editor’s Note: The Federal Voting Assistance Program has designated Oct. 12 to 18 this year as Absentee Voting Week as a reminder for overseas voters to mark and return their absentee ballots. The following is a commentary on how the author was reminded about the importance of her vote when she was stationed in Washington, D.C., during an election year in the 1980s.

Sitting conspicuously alone at a Vietnamese restaurant, I was waiting for my friend, Nah, who was born in Vietnam. She was late as usual and when she eventually showed, it was with an apologetic smile and a quick, “Chrissy, I’m sorry.” As she plopped down and before we could even comment on the weather, the waitress asked for our order.

The conversation, or more accurately, the battle, began innocently enough, with Nah explaining that she had registered to vote that afternoon. Having just become a new U.S. citizen, Nah was excited about the whole voting process.

“I thought registering to vote would really be complicated. But, I fi lled in all the infor-mation, showed my certifi cate of naturaliza-tion, gave my oath and that was it. It took fi ve minutes, if that.

“…I’ve been trying to read about the views of the presidential candidates,” Nah contin-ued, without taking a breath. “It takes me over an hour to read one article. I have stacks and stacks,” using her hands, she exaggerates on how tall they are, “of newspapers and magazines to read. I just hope I can fi gure out who I’m going to vote for before the election. I’m not sure who…”

Oh no, not again. I was tired of this “voting craze” not just from Nah, but from everyone. Even John Cougar Mellencamp, the guy who sang “Hurt So Good” was telling me that I should vote and that my vote counted. Who was he kidding? My one little vote meant absolutely nothing in the big scheme of things.

“Chrissy?” Nah’s voice got weaker. “I’m sorry. I’m just so excited about it, and I’ve never done it before. And, I … I just want to talk about it.”

I lowered my eyes. Played with my fork. “I know.”

“Well, if you don’t want to talk about it, I ….” Nah suddenly stopped talking. Then, she asked, “Have you registered to vote?”

Far too quick, I said, “No.”“No,” Nah repeated, as if

it was the most inconceivable notion she had ever heard of.

I realized my mistake. “In the military, we use the absentee ballot because we move around so much.”

My stalling had worked because just then, the waitress brought us our food. And, Nah respected my wishes and changed the conversation to a safer topic.

Nah had just gotten a job as a secretary and was taking night classes to become a computer programmer. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t enjoy the conversation. I had never lied to Nah. I mean I didn’t come right out and tell her that I wasn’t going to vote, but I knew she thought I was going to.

I couldn’t bear it any longer. “Nah, I’m not voting this year.” Or any other year for that matter, I added only to my thoughts.

She didn’t say anything.“Nah, it’s not that big of a deal.”In a voice that didn’t seem to belong to

her, Nah said, “My parents would have given anything to have been able to vote.”

“This isn’t Vietnam. What happened there won’t ever happen here.”

“How can you be so sure? America is young compared to most countries.” She didn’t name Vietnam, but it was understood.

“Age has absolutely nothing to do with it.” I was proud at how quick I dismissed her argument.

She didn’t look at me. She just sat there, staring. “What does it have to do with?

“Strength. America is strong.”

“Why?”“What?”“Why is America a strong

country?”I had expected Nah to be

angry, not to question me in a cold, calculated way.

“Because the people have the power, not the government,” I

said, again proud – I remembered something from junior high.

Quick as a mountain lion, Nah leaped toward her prey. “How do the people exercise that power?”

It was over.I knew the answer, and of course, Nah

knew the answer. But, neither of us said anything. We just stared at each other. The waitress cleared our table and asked us if we wanted anything. Neither of us acknow-ledged her. After a few seconds, she left.

Then, I dropped my eyes and quietly said, “They vote.”

The country you save, may be your own

and both organizations do their jobs very, very well. But together we do our jobs even better.”

Colonel Curran said that even with this recent transfer of

command and control, the TLSC-E will continue to work closely with his battalion, providing support to the DPC. By remaining intertwined and integrated, the two agencies will effectively and effi ciently enhance the 21st TSC’s support of the

DPC mission, he added. The TLSC-E will continue to

provide surge support as a stand-ing task order from the 21st TSC, echelons above battalion logistics support, and Information Security Operations certifi cation in support

of the DPC mission.“Reception, staging and onward

movement is our expertise,” said Colonel Curran. “It’s really about streamlining the process for the 21st TSC and allowing us to manage all three phases.”

Host Nation Support and Lines of Communication are fundamental to suc-cessful transit across multiple national borders, and the 17 nations that make up the National Territorial Commanders Committee recognize their importance.

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command has been a member of the NTCC since its inception in 1986. During the NTCC’s most recent meet-ing, Sept. 17 to 20 in Bad Dürkheim, the 21st TSC hosted members from 13 nations, a representative from NATO and a delegate from Slovakia, who has been nominated to become an NTCC member.

The NTCC steering committee conference is a working meeting to discuss host nation issues. Most importantly, members had the oppor-tunity to become reacquainted.

“Nothing replaces the value of being able to talk about our issues face-to-face,” said Dr. Bill Stokes, Host Nation Support advisor, 21st TSC. “This is a valuable forum to keep our lines of communication open and maintain our good relationships with our host nation and our neighbors.”

The Steering Committee meets twice each year and works on the tasks and goals that are set by the logis-tics and sustainment commanders and general officers who meet once a year. Chairmanship and the role of permanent secretary are rotated between nations.

“As chairman this year, my task is to develop this forum and to guide it to the future with the help of all nations in the areas of transportation, contract-ing, information exchange and member-ship,” said German Lt. Col. Thomas Wojtysiak, Joint Support Command. “The NTCC currently has three core groups – one for the Web site, one developing a best practice checklist on contracting and another on expansion and transformation.”

The NTCC is not intended to replace bilateral arrangements between nations.

“Some members belong to NATO, some to the European Union and some do not belong to either,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Gadea, Host Nation Support branch chief, 21st TSC. “Our unifying factor is cooperation.”

Loud cadence of “Airborne” will be heard as early as 8:30 a.m. Oct. 25 at this year’s U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s Red Ribbon Relay at the track near the Vogelweh Commissary.

“We are going to be ‘Airborne,’” said Capt. Josielyn Carrasquillo, the 5th Quartermaster Company commander, who explained that “Airborne” is the unit’s motto. “We are going to blast the Red Ribbon Relay with ‘Airborne’ cadence and wake up the entire Vogelweh community.”

Last year’s relay was a first by the garrison to support Red Ribbon Week – a national observance encouraging everyone to take a visible stand against drugs and alcohol.

“This relay fits into (Red Ribbon Week) as a community effort – a grassroots program – that all these local agencies combine their efforts to show manpower on the track, reinforcing the message of a drug-free community,” said Heather Robinson, the garrison’s Army Substance Abuse Program prevention coordinator, who along with several volunteers initiated the event.

Opening ceremonies will start at 8 a.m.; the relay will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The closing ceremonies and award presentation will start immediately after the relay.

Almost 300 people from five agencies ran in the relay last year. The 5th Quartermaster Company won the trophy for the most laps, and its battalion – the 39th Transportation Battalion – won for the most participants.

Individual awards will be given this year to the male and female who run the most laps in eight

age categories – including one for 7-year-olds and younger.

“We are ready to go,” said Captain Carrasquillo, who ran 76 laps at last year’s relay. “We have a great and amazing FRG (Family Readiness Group) that is going to support us again this year.”

As a friendly challenge to other local organiza-tions, Captain Carrasquillo said her unit will have even more participants this year.

The deadline for units and agencies to register is Monday. Team rosters with all participants’ names must be submitted at the time of registra-tion. There is not a limit on the number of team members. Individuals must run with an agency or unit, said Ms. Robinson. Those who do not belong to one of the registered organizations and want to run can contact Ms. Robinson.

For more information and to regis-ter, call Ms. Robinson at 486-6121 or e-mail [email protected].

The Red Ribbon campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered Kiki Camarena, an undercover drug enforce-ment officer in 1985. Within weeks of his death, Special Agent Camarena’s Congressman and a high school friend launched Camarena Clubs in his hometown of Imperial Valley, Calif. The tradition of making pledges to lead drug-free lives and wearing red badges of satin – red ribbons – as a symbol of Special Agent Camarena’s memory was created at these clubs.

Eventually, Red Ribbon Week became a nation-ally recognized observance to honor Special Agent Camarena and reduce demand for drugs through prevention and education programs.

The Air Force takes crime very seriously. Many resources go into ensuring that good order and discipline are always maintained; this demands the highest integrity from each and every Airman. However, in some cases, we find that the alleged ‘victim’ is actu-ally the wrongdoer. Making a false official statement is a violation of Article 107 and pun-ishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The following case led to an Airman losing her career over a false allegation of sexual assault.

A female Airman told OSI and local author-ities that she had been raped at gunpoint in another European country while on leave. The incident received a high level of interest to include the State Department. As the inves-tigation proceeded, the Airman recanted her story, stating that she was not raped and that she had consented to having sex. She claimed that her rape allegation was an “exaggera-tion of the facts.” For this serious offense, she received an Article 15 and an administrative discharge with a service characterization of “General.” A general discharge characteriza-tion results in the loss of all G.I. Bill and other educational benefits.

Aside from the lingering concern of why someone would accuse an innocent person of a crime they did not commit, remains the fact that when an Airman lies, their entire ser-vice record is overshadowed by their criminal behavior. This Airman was known for her superior work ethic, but her “off-duty” conduct blackened her entire military career.

False official statements affect more than the Airman that made them. They hurt those who are wrongly accused, take resources away from the mission and will be dealt with very seriously.

Fire engines, police cars, emer-gency lights and sirens, a 150-foot ladder towering into the sky, a heli-copter circling overhead and even the jaws-of-life were among the scenery at this year’s Firefighter Challenge in Buchenbeuren, Germany, Sept. 14.

Three members of the 835th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Depart-ment and three members of the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron par-ticipated in the challenge and many more of the KMC’s own were pres-ent to show their support and enjoy the festivities. The 569th USFPS participated by bringing out a patrol car and allowing the locals to crawl inside and explore its interior.

“We felt this would be a good way

to let the local communities know that we are good neighbors,” said Lt. Col. Joe Hogan, 569th USFPS commander.

The three participants from the 835th CES Fire Department competed against firefighters from neighboring stations in fire pro-tection scenarios including a hose drag, in which an individual must drag 260 pounds of fire hose a distance of over 255 feet. Other scenarios included such feats as pulling a 200-pound dummy to safety and hauling 44-pound canisters up a 12-foot high scaffold.

Overcoming the tests of skill, strength and endurance, the 835th CES’s own Steffen Schunck came in third place.

“I practiced hard for these scenarios, but they are still very challenging,”said Mr. Schunck.

Staff Sgt. Jayson Adcock, who placed fourth overall, and Oliver Feix, both with the 835th CES, also participated in the challenge.

“Over 40 stations participat-ed in the challenge,” said Oliver Socha, chief of the challenge and a

firefighter with the 835th CES. “All together, it was a great event.”

At the end of the day, Firefighter Challenge 2008 turned out to be another blazing success for the community and for the KMC team.

The KMC Fire and Emergency Services Flight will be observing Fire Prevention Week from Sunday to Oct. 11.

Fire Prevention Week is observed on the first full week of October every year. It started with the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, when a fire broke out in a Chicago neighbor-hood Oct. 8.

There are many speculations as to how the fire started. The most popular story of the legend is that Mrs. O’Leary was milking her cow when the animal kicked over a lantern, setting fire to the barn and spreading through the city, burn-ing more than 2,000 acres in a little more than 24 hours. The tragic fire killed about 300 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,000 buildings.

The city managed to rebuild and recover from one of the largest fire disasters in the city’s history. Many of the residents decided to come together every year to memorial-ize the anniversary of the fire with festivities.

The official marking of the fire prevention campaign was marked by U.S. President Calvin Coolidge the week of Oct. 4 to 10, 1925. During the first campaign, President Coolidge proclaimed that every year fire departments would come together to place a focus on fire prevention to avoid the same type

of tragedy that was experienced in Chicago in 1871.

The KMC has experienced several fires over the last year. Thankfully, the community has not experienced a death from these fires. Cooking fires, especially grease fires, continue to be the most common cause of a fire. Most of the fires in the community could have been avoid-ed with simple procedures including

not leaving food unattended while cooking, keeping matches and light-ers out of the reach of children and keeping combustible materials away from heat sources.

From Sunday until Oct. 11 and throughout the month of October, the KMC Fire and Emergency Services Flight will celebrate Fire Prevention Week 2008 with the theme “It’s fire prevention week:

Prevent home fires!” The fire department will set

up information booths in the community and will offer fire station tours. The fire department will also post fire safety messag-es on the housing marquee signs. During the campaign, there will be appearances from Sparky the Fire Dog and Smokey Bear, who invite everyone in the community to prac-tice fire safety throughout the year.

The KMC Fire and Emergency Services Flight would like to invite everyone in the KMC to practice fire safety during fire prevention week and throughout the year.

The National Fire Protection Association has stated on their Web site that in 2007, U.S. fire depart-ments responded to a fire every 20 seconds. The thought of that many responses in the United States is shocking, considering that most can be avoided by sitting down with your family and discussing prevention techniques like having an escape plan, having working smoke detectors in your home and purchasing a fire extinguisher and learning how to use it.

It is important to keep in mind that with a little fire safety knowledge, fire can be prevented. Remember the easiest fire to fight … is the one YOU prevent.

The construction project on Mitchell Avenue near the flight-line will be completed soon and the traffic pattern will be changed permanently.

The project will change the prior-ity roads at Fairchild and Mitchell, Arnold Circle and near Hangar 2 (Bldg. 2291). Stop signs will be removed at two locations and four new yield signs placed.

Mitchell Avenue will also have a new drop arm barrier installed, so vehicles requiring flightline access will need to use the Arnold Circle entry control point. Call the 435th CES Project Management Section at 480-6486 for details.

First sergeants’ cornerAs I was attending

this year’s POW/MIA flag raising ceremony, I thought about the significance of that particular ceremony. Afterward, I began to think about all the

different ceremonies we conduct in the Air Force. We have ceremonies to recognize achievements, such as promotions, decorations and retire-ments. Retreat is another important ceremony; its purpose is to mark the end of the duty day and, more importantly, to show respect for our nation’s flag. Ceremonies are part of our rich military heritage and help distinguish us as members of the profession of arms. Whenever you take part in a ceremony, whether as a participant or an observer, take the time to reflect on its meaning.

Arguably the worst American fighter of World War II was the Bell P-39 Aircobra, which com-bined inadequate performance – short range, slow rate of climb, low service ceiling and poor maneuverability – with poor handling. One avia-tion historian noted “it was the single exception to the rule that all U.S. WWII fighters had good, safe flight characteristics.” When the United States sent P-39s to the RAF early in the war, it was immedi-ately rejected despite Great Britain’s severe short-age of fighters. Unfortunately, a number of Army Air Force units had to use them in combat in the Pacific and North Africa – and suffered heavy losses – until they could be replaced by better air-craft. Most P-39s were sent to the Soviet Union, where they were more successful (though stories persist of German fighter pilots specifically look-ing for Aircobras because they were easy kills).

Bell produced a follow-on to the P-39 with a number of modifications and renamed it the P-63 King Cobra. The modifications solved most of the handling problems but still left P-63’s perfor-mance inadequate, especially in range and at top speed. Many were sent to the Soviet Union, but structural problems appeared in the aircraft so deliveries were stopped. This left the Army Air Force in late 1944 with a number of surplus new

King Cobras whose performance was inadequate for combat, and this led to one of the most realis-tic, if bizarre, training programs ever instituted.

In an attempt to provide realistic training for bomber gunners, in 1944 professors at Duke University developed a frangible .50-caliber machine gun bullet made of a lead and graphite compound that would shatter harmlessly against armor plate. With this bullet, it was decided to attempt to develop a training program to allow gunners to fire these bullets at a single-engine fighter simulating enemy fighter attacks. The P-63 was selected as the “target” aircraft; Bell added thick armored skin, covered the rear part of the canopy with metal sheeting and installed heavy armored glass for the rest of the canopy. Along with the armor, engineers installed 109 sensors on the skin of the King Cobras; when a frangible round struck a sensor, it would shatter (hopefully) and transmit an electrical impulse that registered on a counter in the cockpit that recorded the total number of hits. This hit would also light a large, bright red bulb mounted on the P-63’s propeller spinner so the gunner knew he had hit his target. Needless to say, the very appropriate name “Flying Pinball Machine” was quickly adopted.

Initial testing of the Pinball prototypes proved satisfactory, though the aircraft had to be handled carefully because of the extra weight. Soon, the

Pinballs were in service – some painted bright orange. By April 1945, training with the Pinballs had begun and the gunnery schools could now put students in highly-realistic combat conditions. On a typical mission, 12 students would take turns at firing at the Pinball aircraft. Each fired 2,000 frangible rounds at the P-63, but the Pinball was typically hit by only a dozen or so bullets per mission, which said something about the accuracy of bomber gunners.

While broadly successful, the Pinballs were not invulnerable. The air scoops occasionally ingested bullet fragments or entire bullets that would damage the oil and coolant radiators and overheat the engine. Additionally, Pinball pilots were uneasy with the idea of being shot at, even with frangible bullets, because only the forward parts of the aircraft were armored. Students were told to cease fire when the RP-63 broke off its attack and turned away, but occasionally a trigger-happy gunner kept firing and damaged the fighter.

The program was so successful that Bell engi-neers began work on a dedicated target plane version, the RP-63. It had additional lights added to the fuselage sides, back and on the outer wing upper surfaces to indicate hits more clearly to gunnery students. Armor plating was extended towards the rear of the fuselage, and an order for 450 RP-63Gs was placed, though only 30 were completed. At the end of the war, the Army Air Force Training Command turned its RP-63s over to the new Strategic Air Command to help train B-29 gunners, and they served until 1948.

While the “Flying Pinball” program now looks a bit humorous, it was significant as an attempt to provide truly realistic training for AAF aircrews. Had such a program been developed earlier in the war, it might have allowed American gunners to protect their bombers more effectively during the critical period of the air war over Germany in 1943.

The definition of a hero can be explained as an object or act of extreme admiration and devotion. Police officers, firefighters and military servicemembers are often perceived as real life heroes. Bone marrow donors are also heroes. They volunteer to help save the life of someone that can be a complete stranger. With more than 30,000 people nationwide hoping for a dona-tion – 500 being military – every donation has the chance of giving someone and their family another chance to lead a healthy life.

And for some families, that need is greater than others. Though Navy Lt. Steven Flynn, currently stationed in Brunswick, Maine, and his family are just one of many military families trying to find a bone marrow match for their children, he has three children in need of a donor.

“Our family has had the unfortunate luck of having three of our five children stricken with a terrible disease,” said Lieutenant Flynn. “Two of the three girls – the twins, Julia and Jorja – who are only a year old now, obviously do not know the outcomes of their diseases, but our 7-year-

old daughter, Jordan, does and she knows she will need a bone marrow transplant in the near future. This is a scary time for our family, but with the help of our military family, we hope to find a donor to save our children.”

Team Ramstein will be helping in the effort to find a donor by hosting a bone marrow donor registration drive Monday to Oct. 10. Individuals can reg-ister through their unit points of contact or at Ramstein and Vogelweh base exchanges from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 10. Active-duty military members, their dependents, DOD civilians and con-tractors between 18 and 60 years old are allowed to register. Military members can also take a registration packet home to their spouses and family members who are older than 18 and unable to register during that time.

“It is a wonderful blessing to be able to help someone who is very ill to recover,” said Michael Waschek, 435th Mission Support Squadron civil-ian personnel officer, who recently donated. “In my case, a 14-year-old boy was the recipient and he was able to return to the things he really

enjoyed doing once recovery from the bone marrow transfusion was complete. The discom-fort involved in the process is minimal compared to the potential results of saving someone’s life.”

“If you find out you are a match, there is no better gift than the gift of life,” said Master Sgt. Daniel MacDonald, 435th Civil Engineer Squadron NCOIC

of Contingency Operations and group unit deployment manager. “In 1992, my mother passed away from lung cancer and although this type of treat-ment would not have helped

her, I saw the program as a way to do my part. In 2001 and 2005, I donated to the same person twice.”

Donating is a simple process. Almost anyone can register to donate even if they have been stationed overseas, taken anti-malaria medication, have recent tattoos or have received recent immunizations. The initial registration involves a simple swab of the mouth and the completion of some paperwork.

For details, contact Capt. Patrick Schwomeyer at 480-5911.

After a down day to give the aircrews a chance to rest, the team flew to a Botswanan air force base to meet with their counterparts. The day started with briefings and some refreshments. Then the aircrews from both countries got to interact and check out each others’ C-130s.

“We discussed ways of employ-ing the C-130 and the differences of how we use the airplane and some of the challenges they have,” said Capt. Sarah Santoro, a C-130 pilot with the 37th AS. “It’s always interesting to see when we go visit places that the mindset is always aircrew to aircrew – no matter what flag they have on their shoulder.”

Members from both countries were eager to compare notes and to learn about each other.

“I was very impressed,” said Staff Sgt. Jesse Levy, a loadmaster with the 37th AS. “They were very professional and enthusiastic. They seemed as happy about us being there as we were. Overall it was a very good experience.”

Sergeant Levy specifically noticed an immediate sense of camaraderie between the loadmasters from both countries.

“I’d say we are very similar in attitude,” he said. “We both have a high enthusiasm for this job.

They really want to get the best training possible, just like we do. Their loadmaster asked a lot of questions about airdrops and about different things that we do. He really wanted to come back and do more training with us. I definitely think they are where they need to be with attitude, but they could really benefit from more training.”

The Americans also noted some differences.

“They do things differently,” said Staff Sgt. David Bell, an engine specialist with the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. “They have a longer technical training than we do.”

He also noted that their mainte-nance career field is broken down into only three sections, compared to American maintainers who have seven fields of expertise.

“I was impressed to see that they use the same equipment we do,” Sergeant Bell said. “Their aircraft are a lot older, but they have newer engines and the glass cockpit upgrades.”

The third day in Botswana consisted of some souvenir shopping and a mini safari where the team had a chance to see elephants, giraffes, rhinos and a variety of other animals.

“It’s one thing to go to a zoo in the states, but to go and see these animals in their natural habitat

combined with breathtaking scenery was absolutely amazing,” said Capt. Trevor Gunderson, a copilot with the 37th AS. “I never thought I’d have this experience. It’s been a great trip.”

On the Ramstein Airmen’s last day with the BDF, some of the Botswanan aircrew members were invited to ride along in the U.S. C-130s on a low-level formation training flight.

“This was an incredible opportu-nity for us,” said Maj. T. Phuthego, the chief pilot for Botswanan C-130 operations. “One of our main challenges is that we are still part of the army. It’s refreshing to get a chance to interact with other members of the aviation communi-ty. We look forward to more oppor- tunities to interact with each other. Our goal is to become more profi-cient in deploying our C-130s for peacekeeping and humanitarian missions around Africa.”

Overall the stay in Botswana was a success, according to Colonel Thomas.

“It’s an absolute thrill to be here,” the colonel said. “It’s without question an honor and privilege to get to do these things.”

Colonel Thomas also felt that more training opportunities would be beneficial to both nations.

“I see a future of more training with the BDF in terms of willing-

ness and interest in doing it,” he said. “Several of their officers have expressed a desire for us to continue this relationship. I also think there is a significant amount of value added for us as the U.S. military to remain engaged in the South African region, because it will likely become more and more important as interests and activities in Africa develop.”

The bilateral affairs officer with the North Carolina National Guard State Partnership Program working in the U.S. Embassy in Botswana, Maj. Sidney Shinn, agrees.

“This is the beginning of esta-blishing where we want to go with this program with regard to actual military-to-military exchange with like aircraft, in this case the C-130,” Major Shinn said. “The BDF is an organization which is very pro-fessional. However they are seeking guidance on how to move themselves forward, specifically with the deploy-ments and redeployments attached to peacekeeping operations which they have been requested to fulfill through the U.S. government.”

The major would also like to see unit-level exercises between the BDF and the U.S. Air Force.

“We are committed to our rela-tionship with Botswana and looking to expand it for the long term. Our goal is to assist them to become self-sustaining. We want to become a partner that works alongside them.”

The new Kaiserslautern School Complex drop-off and pick-up area is finally complete.

Thanks to funding by U.S. Air Forces in Europe and hard work by the 86th Con-struction and Training Squadron personnel, parents can now enjoy the convenience and safety of a parking area behind the Kaiser-slautern schools. You may have already seen its construction from B270 or the family hous-ing pedestrian bridge, but this article explains what the area is designed for and how you can get there.

For years, parents have used the Vogelweh Chapel, 569th Security Forces and the civil engineer parking lots and cut across the traffic of Washington Square and Kansas Street with their children to get to school. This obviously caused added congestion at several work centers and is a safety hazard with so many children crossing Vogelweh’s main thorough-fare and then crossing Kansas Street amidst the traffic of the bus marshalling area.

Now, whether dropping off middle and high school students, or walking elementary children to class, the new KSC drop-off/

pick-up area is now a parent’s best choice in the mornings or afternoons when headed to school. The parking area has 12 one-hour parking slots, designed to allow parents to walk children to their classrooms or sign their children in and out of school for appoint-ments. Moreover, parents can drive through

the area for quick drop-off or pick-up. Furthermore, the new parking area is also

designed as the single point of entry for the school complex. The main gate off of Kansas Street will remain closed and locked, except during emergencies. All contract vehicles, delivery trucks and school staff will use a designated lane of traffic at the new entrance to prevent vehicle traffic from cutting through the complex during school hours and creating safety hazards for the students and faculty.

The new parking area can be reached by turning onto Second Avenue from the Kapaun side of Vogelweh. Follow Second Avenue, through the new housing area and down to the school complex. Since Kansas Street is cur-rently blocked during the hours of school due to bus marshalling, parents should traverse Kapaun from the Pulaski side of base and head down Kansas Street until forced to turn onto Second Avenue. The parking area is adjacent to the walk-over bridge between the new housing area and the school complex.

Finding the right college and subsequent financial assistance just got a lot easier for students living in military communities throughout Europe.

College Night offers one-stop shopping for higher education. The bonanza will happen from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Special Events Center, Bldg. 237 on Rhine Ord-nance Barracks.

College Night offers all De-partment of Defense Dependent Schools – Europe high school students and their parents a chance to get first-hand knowledge about colleges and universities, scholar-ships and financial assistance.

“Not all students can go back to the states to see colleges,” said Lynn Rice, the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s school liaison of-ficer. “And by having College Night here, it actually gives them an idea – ‘Do I want to go to this college?’ or ‘What does this college have to offer me?’”

Free and open to all ID card-holders, College Night is also a good opportunity for servicemem-bers, civilians, retirees and their families wanting to pursue higher education. Participation from other military schools in Europe is strongly encouraged. Middle school students may also attend.

About 120 accredited colleges and universities will have represen-tatives at this year’s event, said Ms. Rice, who added this number is a slight increase from last year. These representatives are a mixture of university staff from the U.S. and alumni living in Europe.

There will also be representa-

tives from scholarship and financial assistance agencies, and military recruiters.

Ms. Rice said that the number of attendees should also increase from last year. More than 1,200 students, parents, guidance counselors and teachers from DODDS and inter-national schools throughout Germany, Belgium and Italy attended the event.

This is the 12th year that the KMC has held College Night with the two local high schools – Kaiserslautern and Ramstein – rotating logistics and sponsorship. Last year was the first time the gar-rison’s Family Morale Welfare and Recreation directorate partnered with the host school.

“I really thought the event last year went a lot better than the only other year I’ve seen it when we hosted it at our school just because there was so much more room and the crowd had a lot more op-portunity to get out and see those colleges and universities that were there,” said Greg Hatch, the RHS principal. This year, RHS is the host school for College Night.

The Special Events Center, where the garrison’s bazaars are held, is more than double the size of either school’s gym. Space is a big consid-eration because, as Mr. Hatch said, this event is designed for people to have direct contact with college and university representatives so they can concentrate on this possibly major, life-changing decision.

Planning for College Night starts in May of the previous school year and takes the collected dedication of garrison and KMC school staffs, members from parent teacher orga-nizations, school liaison officers and community volunteers.

Nate Adams, University of Oklahoma area site manager, shows what the university has to offer Pfc. Anthony Arredondo, from the 181st Signal Company, at last year’s College Night. This year, the event will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Special Events Center on Rhine Ordnance Barracks.

A quick stick in the arm or a spray in the nose … OR

A week of headaches, coughing, sneezing, chicken soup and misery, while your unit works shorthanded.

It’s not that hard a choice to make.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease that can have serious, even fatal, effects. It threatens military readiness, with the potential to put many servicemembers on sick call instead of on duty. Therefore, all military members are required to be vaccinated against the flu each year.

“The Center for Disease Control and Prevention esti-mated an average of 36,000 Americans died annu-ally in the 1990s due to influenza-related complica-tions. Each year, 5 to 20 per-cent of the United States pop-ulation gets the flu, resulting in about 200,000 people being hospitalized. Vaccination is your best protection against influenza infection,” said Lt. Col. Patrick M. Garman, deputy director for scien- tific affairs at the Department of Defense Military Vaccine Agency.

“DOD will offer its bene-ficiaries influenza vaccina-tions during the flu season in accordance with national guidelines. Certain groups take priority, such as active duty or individuals with chronic diseases like diabetes, and after these groups are adequately taken care of the vaccine will be available to any beneficiary who wishes to be vaccinated,” Colonel Garman said.

Flu immunizations are mandatory for all active duty, National Guard and reserve personnel. The Department of Defense has established a goal of having 90 percent of these people

vaccinated by Dec. 31.Vaccinations are also

mandatory for civilian health-care personnel who provide direct patient care in DOD medical treatment facilities, and for emergency-essential DOD civilian personnel.

The vaccine is available by injection or intranasal spray.

“Inf luenza viruses change from year to year,” said Colonel G a r m a n . “ P r o t e c t i o n that develops after a per-son is infected or is immu-nized against the circulating viruses of one season does not provide adequate cross-protection when a new influ-enza strain develops.”

This year’s influenza vaccine composition in the U.S. is recommended for the Northern Hemisphere by the World Health Organization. The 2008-2009 influen-za vaccine strains are A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1), A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2) and B/Florida/4/2006.

When the vaccine is well matched to the circulating virus strain, immunization of healthy adults has been 70 to 90 percent effective in pre-venting influenza illness.

“We stress that influenza vaccination should continue until the supply is exhausted or until the expiration date is reached for the vaccine. The highest incidence of dis-ease is usually in February, but influenza can be contracted year round,” Colonel Garman said.

More information about influenza and influenza vaccinations is available on the Internet from the Military Vaccine Agency at www.vac-cines.mil/flu and from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov/flu/protect.

Influenza is spread through aerosolized respiratory drop-lets during close contact with

an infected person or animal, or through contact with a contaminated object.

In addition to vaccination, experts recommend frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Also, people who are sick should avoid others if possible, wash hands often

and cover their mouth and nose when cough-ing or sneez-ing to prevent the virus from

spreading.Most people who receive

the influenza vaccine experience no serious problems. Side effects of the injectable vaccine such as soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, fever, weakness, headache or muscle aches may last one or two days. More serious prob-lems such as severe allergic reactions are rare.

Side effects of the intra-nasal vaccine can include runny nose, headache, fever, cough and sore throat.

People in a few categories, such as children less than 6 months old, those with sen-sitivity to eggs or egg prod-ucts, or those with a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, should not receive the influenza vaccine.

While providing flu vacci-nations, health-care providers should screen immunization records to see if patients need other vaccines or boosters as well. Military commanders are responsible for ensuring immunization data is entered into electronic immunization tracking systems.

“Find out the hours of operation of your local DOD immunization clin-ic,” said Colonel Garman. “Most organizations sched-ule walk-in clinic hours, so appointments may not be necessary.”

Or be prepared for that week of misery.

Why do I need to get immunized against the flu every year?

Influenza viruses change from year to year. Protection that develops after a person is infected or is immunized against the circulating viruses of one season does not provide adequate cross-protection when a new influenza strain develops.

How soon will I get sick after being exposed to the flu?

The time from exposure to when symp-toms first start (incubation period) is usually two to four days. This is the period when people are most contagious to others be-cause the infected person still feels normal and is not taking the necessary precautions to avoid spreading the disease.

Who should receive intranasal vaccine (FluMist)?

FluMist is a live intranasal vaccine approved for 2- to 49-year-olds. For more information, see www.vaccines.mil/flu.

Who should not get the injectable influenza vaccine?

• People who have a severe allergy to chicken proteins, eggs, egg products or any components of the influenza vaccine

• People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination in the past

• People who developed Guillain-Barré Syndrome within six weeks of getting an influenza vaccine previously (unless ad-vised otherwise by their physician)

• People who are sick with a fever; these people can get immunized once their symp-toms resolve

• Children less than 6 months of age• People less than 18 years of age

should not get Flulaval or Afluria.Note: People who have a history of a

severe allergic reaction to vaccine compo-nents, but also are at high risk for complica-tions from influenza may be able to receive the vaccine after appropriate allergist evalu-ation and desensitization.

For general information on influenza and the benefits of receiving the annual vacci-nation, visit the CDC Web site at www.cdc.gov/flu/ or www.vaccines.mil/flu.

2008October Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Here is a list of Hispanics who have made history in the military:

• Pfc. Guy Gabaldon: Marine Pfc. Guy “Gabby” Gabaldon, World War II hero, has the distinction of capturing more enemy soldiers than anyone else in the history of U.S. military conflicts. While serving as a Japanese interpreter, he received a Silver Star for obtaining vital in-formation and capturing more than 1,000 enemy personnel in the face of direct fire. Private Gabaldon was able to persuade the weakened Japanese soldiers to sur-render, in spite of their orders to fight to the last man. His Silver Star was elevated to a Navy Cross in December 1960.

• 65th Infantry Regiment: The 65th Infan-try Regiment, based in Puerto Rico, was the only all-Hispanic unit to serve during the Korean War. Nicknamed the “Borin-queneers” in honor of a native Puerto Rican Indian tribe, the 65th displayed true heart and valor during the Korean War. During a three-year period from 1950 to 1953, the unit participated in nine major campaigns, earning a Presidential Unit Citation, a Meritorious Unit Commen-dation and two Republic of Korea Unit Citations.

• 141st Infantry Regiment (36th Infantry Division): The 141st Infantry Regiment was a unit of the 36th Infantry Division from Texas. The 141st had a high con-centration of Hispanics. The men of the 141st experienced 362 days of combat during World War II (137 in Italy, 204 in France, 17 in Germany, 4 in Austria). Because of this intensive combat, the 141st sustained more than 6,000 casual-ties: more than 500 missing in action, 5,000 wounded and 1,126 killed. In recognition of their extended service and valor, members of the 141st received three Medals of Honor, 31 Distinguished Service Crosses, 12 Legion of Merits, 492 Silver Stars, 11 Soldier’s Medals, 1,685 Bronze Stars and numerous other com-mendations and decoration.

• “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead”: “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” is one of the most famous battle cries. Admiral David Farragut, the most famous Hispanic participant in the Union forces, shouted this during the battle for control of the port of Mobile, Ala., dur-ing the Civil War. The torpedoes were actually anchored mines that blocked the entrance to the Mobile Bay. In the course of the battle, Admiral Farragut led his fleet into battle and into the bay with that cry. The union fleet, under Admiral Farragut’s direction, went on to defeat the Confeder-ate forces and took control of Mobile.

Regional farmers and vendors present their products at the Farmers’ Market in Ramstein-Miesenbach Sunday.

by Petra Lessoing435th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Today, Germany observes a legal holiday – Unification Day – to cele-brate the 18th anniversary of reunifi-cation of East and West Germany.

The former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) were officially reunited Oct. 3, 1990.

The process of reunification start-ed in 1989. During September and October of that year, East Germans demonstrated for democratic reforms and the right to travel to Dresden, Leipzig, Halle, Schwerin and other towns.

Chief of State Erich Honecker was dismissed from his top position Oct. 18 and the new political of-fice announced the opening of the borders to the Federal Republic of Germany and the border gates along the Berlin wall the night of Nov. 9, 1989. Over the next three days, more than 3 million East Germans crossed the border into West Germany just to celebrate, sightsee and purchase goods, which they were not able to obtain in the east.

The wall, a symbol of the Cold War for 28 years, was torn down dur-ing the following weeks and months, and pieces were sold as souvenirs.

East Germany’s first free elections in 40 years were held March 18, 1990, and the citizens elected a new govern-ment. Basic changes concerning the country’s economy, currency, social laws and jurisdiction were established by state contracts May 18 and Aug. 31.

Finally, Oct. 3, 1990, the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist. After 40 years, it vanished from the world political map.

The celebrations in Berlin the night of Oct. 2 included a giant fireworks display, hundreds of thousands of people dancing in the streets drink-ing champagne and the raising of the national flag on the former East German parliament building.

Berlin was chosen as the new capital city of unified Germany.

Ramstein hosts market Sunday

by Petra Lessoing435th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The Rheinland-Pfalz Agricultural Chamber spon-sors the Farmers’ Market for the 12th consecutive time in Ramstein-Miesenbach Sunday, which is observed as Thanksgiving Day in Germany.

Under the auspices of Mayor Klaus Layes, the mar-ket is also the stage for the State Thanksgiving Fest of the Farmers and Vintners Association of Rheinland-Pfalz Süd.

“More than 30 regional farmers and vendors offer their products,” said Stefan Layes from the city of Ramstein-Miesenbach.

The listing of fresh products for sale and to eat on the spot will include beef, lamb and pork meat, meat from game, potatoes, potato pancakes, potato soup, fish specialties, dairy products such as yoghurt, cheese and butter, honey, honey wine, honey liquor, wurst, eggs, pasta and baking goods. Visitors will also have a choice of schnaps, liquors and wine.

Other items to be sold are candles, tea, coffee, herbs, wooden household tools, toys, decoration items and cookbooks.

“Like in the last year, the market again shows off traditional craftsmanship skills including pottery, basket weaving, woodcarving and floristry,” said Mr. Layes.

The event will also feature entertainment with street musicians, information stands on agriculture and agricultural products, pony rides and face painting for children. An animal show will present rabbits, chickens, pigeons, lambs, sheep, donkeys and ponies. In front of the Ramstein Museum, visitors will be able to watch sheep-shearing demonstrations.

Historical tractors will be on display in the streets and an exhibition on potatoes will take place in the town hall. Nutrition experts will give out tips about potatoes and how to cook them correctly. In

a potato lab, children will be able to explore the compo-nents of potatoes.

The UNO designated 2008 as “International Year of the Potato.”

Visitors who get the right answers in a farmers’ market quiz can win more than 100 prizes.

The farmers’ market will officially open at 10 a.m. in the Haus des Bürgers and will be followed by a Thanksgiving worship service. Local stores will offer Sunday shopping from 1 to 6 p.m.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (PG-13) – This stand-alone story takes the com-plicated relationship between Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in unexpected directions. Mulder continues his unshakable quest for the truth, and Scully, the passionate, fero-ciously intelligent physician, remains inex-tricably tied to Mulder’s pursuits. Starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Em-peror (PG-13) – Explorer Rick O’Connell returns to combat the resurrected Han Emperor in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in

this adventure by his son, wife and her brother. This time, the O’Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service. Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent ter-ra cotta army. But when Alex O’Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eter-nal slumber, the young archaelogist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents. As the monarch roars back to life, our heroes find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. The Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable other-worldly force ... unless the O’Connells can stop him first. Starring Brendan Fraser and Jet Li.

by Will BurndredRamstein Rogues

There is a well known saying: Revenge is sweet, and it’s a dish best served cold.

Following the final rugby match of last season, when Worms de-feated the Rogues to become league champions, the Rogues were out for payback in this season’s first league game, and boy did we get it!

The Worms team arrived and announced that they were only able to field 12 players for the match, in-stead of the usual 15, meaning that the match went ahead as a 12-a-side fixture, both teams dropping their back row forwards. Fewer players for each team meant more space and more ground to cover; fitness levels would count.

The game began and, as early as the second minute, the Rogues crossed the Worms line for the first of 19 tries in the game, finished well by Mike McCarty. Rico Colon added the conversion to give the Rogues a 7-0 lead.

Worms was not the team the Rogues expected following last season. Two more quick tries, scored by Brian Hudon and Steve Mongin, gave the Rogues a 21-0 lead after only six minutes of the match. The

same pattern followed for the re-mainder of the first half, the Rogues expertly exploiting gaps and missed tackles to run in a total of 10 tries, eight of them converted, to lead at halftime by 66-0.

The second half began in the same fashion with the Rogues at-tacking. The try count soon in-creased, with the forwards powering

over the Worms’ try line. This score was soon followed by Jase McDon-ald, running in a hat-trick of tries in quick succession.

The game was played in good-tempered spirit for the most part, despite the score line, but halfway through the second half, Worms lost their discipline and a late, danger-ous tackle on Chris ‘Thunder’

Kolbosky, led to the Worms player being ‘Thunderstruck,’ an act for which ‘Thunder’ was yellow carded and spent the next 10 minutes on the sidelines.

The Rogues ran the game from start to finish, running in nine second-half tries, eight being con-verted to finish the game as 127-0 winners, a record for the Rogues in a league match.

Special acknowledgement goes to McDonald, top try scorer in the game with four; McCarty ran in three tries; John Evans scored two tries in his first game for the Rogues, including a fantastic solo effort; Colon scored a total of 35 points (15 conversions and one try) and Kol-bosky made seven assists for tries.

Man of the Match was awarded to Orlando ‘Guz’ Guzman, who scored two tries in a dynamic perfor-mance.

Any member of the military interested in joining the Rogues is encouraged to e-mail [email protected].

Practice sessions are held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday at the Vogelweh/Pulaski Barracks practice field.

The next Rogues home match is at the Queidersbach sportsplatz Oct. 11 against Stade Sarrois.

Sports Shorts

The first annual Hochwald Milchideen Crossduathlon will take place in Hochspeyer Oct. 11 at the Sportverein DJK Grün-Weiß Hoch-speyer.

Combining cross-country running and mountain biking, participants will be challenged by multiple loops in the beautiful Pfälzerwald, with a portion of the mountain bike course on the Mountainbikepark Pfälz-erwald trails. There will be racing action all day with different start waves and an expo area with games, vendors and food concessions.

Based on a similar concept as a triathlon, competitors will compete in both running and mountain bik-ing during the three different legs of the race, beginning with a run, then biking and finishing with a run. Between the legs, competitors will return to the start-finish area where the transition zone is located, making the change from running to biking and then from biking to run-ning. Racers will need to be quick in the transitions, as valuable time can be won or lost here.

Like their triathlete counterparts, racers specializing in multi-sports events like this have practiced and have a routine for quickly getting through the transitions. A special free racing clinic will be held Satur-day at the Sportverein Grün-Weiß in Hochspeyer, where participants can gain valuable tips on the transition zones and the racecourse. Those in-terested should show up a half-hour early to sign up, as space is limited.

Both the running and mountain biking courses start at the Sportver-ein Grün-Weiß Hochspeyer on the running track, with the running loop tracing the undulating, wooded par-cours track behind the sport fields. Short steep climbs riddle the course; power management will be key to have energy left after the first leg for the final two legs.

Upon returning to the Sportver-ein, it is out on the mountain bike, and some really fun trails. A large part of the 10-kilometer loop follows the trails on the mountain bike cross-country training course, part of the Mountainbikepark Pfälzerwald trail system. Tough climbs and twist-ing trails make up this challenging course, so riders will need a balance of power and riding skills to conquer the mountain bike segment. Back in the transition, racers will head out for a shortened version of the first running leg, for 2.5 kilometers.

Packet pick-up and registration the day of the race will start at 8 a.m. at the Sportverein Grün-Weiß Hochspeyer. The first race – the free kids/juniors class – will start at 9 a.m. Youth races will be shorter than the other classes, with the focus on fun; all participants will receive a prize. There is no pre-registration for the kids/junior classes; adults will need to accompany children to sign a waiver.

The Volksduathlon, Team and Company Duathlon will start at

10 a.m. on the 5-kilometer running loop, continue two times around the 10-kilometer mountain bike loop and end with the shorter 2.5-kilome-ter running loop. The Volksduath-lon is open to all and will be broken down into age groups: 19 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49 and over 50 for men and 19 to 34, 35 to 44 and over 45 for women.

The Team and Company Duath-lon is open to teams of two, with categories for men, mixed and com-pany teams. The teams will pass off a baton in the transition area, with each member being responsible for either the running legs or mountain bike leg of the race.

The final start-wave will feature the fastest competitors of the day, with the “Rennen der Asse,” or Race of the Aces. This class is open to racers with a triathlon, cycling or running license or feel tough enough to take on the best. All competitors will take on the 5-kilometer run, 20-kilometer mountain bike and 2.5-kilometer run.

Racers can register online at www.crossracer.eu or at the start/finish area up to a half-hour prior to start. Entry fees are €19 for individual classes and €30 for teams. There is a €2.50 late fee for day of registration.

For details, visit www.crossracer.eu or e-mail [email protected].

Child Care µ = see photo @

www.kaiserslauternamerican.comKA advertisers living on base/post and offering child care services are on the approved list of Family Child Care (FCC) providers. Those living off base/post offering these services in the KA are not screened by FCC. Use good judgement when choosing off base/post child care services. Qualifications should be checked and references requested before placing any child in the custody of child care providers who have not been screened.
