Father’s FocusBEAR ONE ANOTHER’S BURDENS

Life is hard. I don’t say that to be a “Debbie Downer”. I recognize that as Chris-tians our first response of faith to life is that it is a gift: a beautiful gift bestowed upon us by a God who loves us dearly. Life is good. Life is a blessing. Life is beautiful. But I think that we can all admit that there are days, perhaps more days than we would like, that life is simply hard. Stress, pressure, anxiety… these are unfortunate realities of our day to day experience. And finding balance in life is a constant task: balancing God with family, fam-ily with friends, friends with work, work with bills, bills with prayer, prayer with volunteer-ing, volunteering with leisure, leisure with chores, and chores with… well, the nap we really want to take. Life is hard. It is a constant balance; and frankly, we need support from one another... we need support from God. People frequently talk to me about their stress and I often ask them, “Do you pray?” Sometimes people’s initial thought is this: “Great, Father, thanks! I tell you my life is full and you tell me to add more! I don’t have enough time as it is, do you think I have time to pray?” But consider this: Don’t you think that the God who created the entire universe in seven days would be able to help you prioritize your various stresses for one day? I’m pretty sure that God knows how to help you balance your life. This is why St. Peter says, “Cast your cares on the Lord because he cares for you” (1 Pet 5:7). This is why I encour-age people to “pray your calendar.” In other words, take a few minutes in the morning with your calendar and present your day to the Lord. Simply pray, “Lord, help me with my appointments today.” The great thing about prayer is that God makes up for the time given in prayer by inspiring a balanced day. We also need support from one another. This is why St. Paul encourages us to “bear one another’s burdens” (Gal 6:2). You see, we are all at different levels of stress at differ-ent times. Family, friends and fellow parishioners are all called to help each another as one person’s stress is high while another person’s is low. There are two sides to this coin. First, don’t be afraid to ask other people for help. Some people see asking for help as an imposi-tion on others; but Christians are supposed to help one another. Second, don’t be afraid to offer help when you see others stressed. Sometimes people just need to know that other’s notice their stress in order to not feel alone. So, yes, life is hard. But life is more tolerable when we cast our cares on the Lord and help carry one another’s burdens. -Fr. Jarrod Lies, pastor
