VisionA world where everyone has a safe and decent

place to call home.

MissionTo mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as the means to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Values• Habitat builds strength, stability

and independence through affordable home ownership.

• Strong and stable homes help build strong and stable communities.

• Decent shelter is something we all need to thrive.

• With a little help, we all have the potential to stand on our own.

• Bold actions speak louder than words.

• Working together, side-by-side, promotes understanding and self-reliance.

HABIT-8835_2017_AnnualReport_Cover.indd 2 2018-04-12 12:10 PM

There was, perhaps, no other year in Habitat for Humanity Edmonton’s history that can quite compare to 2017. As you may know, Habitat Edmonton was selected to host the 34th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in July, which allowed the world to see the incredible donors, volunteers, families, and staff of Habitat Edmonton. Over 5,000 volunteers came from around the world to help build homes for families.

It is safe to say that meeting President and Mrs. Carter was heartwarming for everyone involved. They are exceptional people who draw and inspire others through their philanthropic work. The Carters’ time in Edmonton helped to shine a spotlight on the work Habitat is doing in the capital region, which resulted in unparalleled community support that greatly benefited our charity and ultimately our families. We are also grateful to the local, national, and international media who helped us build awareness of Habitat’s work in Edmonton.

While excitement for the Carter Build Week was mounting, we opened ReStore South, our fourth Edmonton ReStore. With 32,000 square feet and a prime location, ReStore South will easily become a successful store that will generate much needed funds for Habitat Edmonton.

We were delighted to help 51 families become homeowners in 2017: nine at Carter Place, six in Fort Saskatchewan, one in each of Slave Lake and Grande Prairie, and 34 in various communities through our Buy Back program. These families have achieved strength, stability, and independence through the Habitat program and have set a solid foundation for their futures.

Habitat Edmonton’s Buy Back program has grown to be much more successful than we had ever imagined! The Buy Back program allows us to repurchase homes from Habitat homeowners who are ready to move on from our program. We return their equity to them and they use that equity to purchase a house on the open market. We then sell the home to another qualifying family.

2017 has been the quintessential year for our families, staff, volunteers, and donors. All of us are extremely grateful to the scores of people who worked diligently to make the Carter Work Project and our local Habitat program an overwhelming success. Thank you for your continued support of Habitat for Humanity Edmonton.

Aria, 4-year old

“I like my bedroom and I like to sleep in it by my brother.”

In a Habitat home, children are able to concentrate on homework, sports, and being kids without worrying about the instability that may come with starting at a new school, meeting new friends, or feeling their parents’ worries about paying the bills. The Habitat program sets a stable foundation for growing, learning, and thriving – and children really do thrive! According to a Boston Consulting Group survey, children who grow up in Habitat homes are more likely to achieve a bachelor’s degree or higher, and that is worth celebrating. There are elementary school children and young adults now in university who have benefitted from their parents attaining affordable home ownership.

Meerab, 7-year old

“The most favourite area in my home is the living area where I spend time with family, reading books, playing games, and watching cartoons.”

Mohammed, 4-year old

“I like the garage door keypad, the stairs, and my room because it’s bigger than the one I had before. I can play as loud as I want and won’t bother people downstairs ‘cause nobody lives in the basement.”

Frances, 19-year old university student

“Living in our Habitat home has made an impact on me in the way of how it’s given me a new sense of responsibility. It’s made my family happier because it reduced stress and it’s helped us to become more financially stable. I am where I am now because of the help we received from living in a Habitat home. I’ve been able to finish junior high, high school, and now I’m in university. It’s also made me feel more confident to be in school.”

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as watching children thrive.

Zarah, 19-year old university student

“Hi, my name is Zarah and I live in Habitat’s Anderson Gardens development. Living in a Habitat home impacted me in a really positive way. I was able to grow up in an amazing community and home surrounded by great people, and it felt good knowing that my family and I had a great place we could call home. Growing up in this home helped me to be where I am today. The house helped me have access to my own study space in where I could excel in my studies and have complete focus. I was able to stay motivated in working hard towards my goals. I’m extremely grateful that my family received this blessing.”

Mark, 13-year old junior high student

“A year-and-a-half have flown by so fast since we moved into our Habitat home. Ever since we moved in I’ve been enjoying our great and humble house. It feels so good to have a nice home where I can invite my friends after school to enjoy our Slurpee’s and watch NBA games. I always hear my friends saying that we have a beautiful home and I am very happy. I enjoy my own space, having my own room where I hang the medals that I got from the basketball tournament.

The comfort, good neighbors, and peaceful living are what I enjoy about my home. My mom enjoys her kitchen a lot and also the deck where she plants strawberries during summer. We have invited our friends and relatives and they like our house so much. It was the home that we have always wanted. Words may not be enough to say how much thankful we are.”

Words from youth who have been in their Habitat homes for years:

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 | 3

HABIT-8835_2017_AnnualReport_Inside.indd 3 2018-04-12 12:16 PM

In 2017, local Habitat volunteers went above-and-beyond to accommodate thousands of visiting volunteers from home and abroad. Using their problem-solving and communication skills, along with their adaptability and willingness to work as a team, volunteers helped to set the stage for the biggest and most memorable event in the history of Habitat Edmonton: the 2017 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project! Some volunteers led crews in homebuilding, others created a hospitable and fun environment, and others became the legs and arms that helped during the weeklong event. Volunteers prepared for the event: at the build sites, at the Prefab Shop, in the offices, and at the Carter Work Project Centre. They led during the event and were involved in take down and clean up. The result was a heightened awareness of Habitat’s work in the Edmonton area and the realization that 75 families with over 220 children would own affordable homes.

Although much of the focus for 2017 was on the Carter Work Project, volunteers brought their optimism, love, and hard-working hands to other volunteer tasks. A special team of volunteers geared up the newest ReStore in Edmonton by spending hundreds of hours renovating and preparing the store for its opening in June. Others “upcycled” construction waste into items to sell in our ReStores, and still others ensured that Habitat families would enjoy newly landscaped yards blooming with trees, shrubs, and freshly laid sod.

Through their leadership and commitment, volunteers transformed 2017 into a banner year for Habitat for Humanity Edmonton.

When it comes to volunteers, Habitat Edmonton is blessed.

Orest Myckan, Volunteer since 1993

“After I retired in 1997, I became heavily involved with Habitat’s work in the Edmonton area. I remember lifting walls and pounding nails in the 90s and have seen tremendous growth since that time. Back in those days we served a handful of families each year, and now we are serving at least 50 families a year. During my time with Habitat Edmonton I also became passionate about helping the Habitat program grow in developing countries. I’ve led over 30 trips to countries around the world to help families in need of stability and hope and will continue to do so. 2017 was an amazing year because of the Carter Work Project and the attention the Carters brought to the need for affordable home ownership in the Edmonton area. The Habitat program is transformational both at home and abroad, and working alongside families and watching their lives change makes me feel so good about what I do.”

Neil Calhoun, Volunteer since 1999

“2017 is a year I won’t soon forget! It was incredible for us to have 75 homes under construction. Over the years I’ve seen smiles on the faces of scores of families as they became homeowners. My volunteer journey with Habitat began in 1999. I remember pulling up to a Habitat build in Edmonton during the summer and feeling like a kid during his first day of Kindergarten. I didn’t know what to do! And yet I had a love for building. At the end of the day I stood dripping with sweat, amazed at what we had accomplished. I’ve been committed to Habitat’s vision and mission ever since. Soon I became involved with the local board of directors, then chaired the board, and afterwards I was on the board of Habitat Canada. I was hopelessly hooked on Habitat and wanted to help more families across the country gain access to affordable home ownership. After I retired, I committed to serving twice a week when available as a Crew Leader on a local Habitat build site. Those times have been some of the most rewarding. I encourage everyone who can volunteer with Habitat to give it a try and maybe you will get hooked on Habitat like I did!”

Grande Prairie A family received keys in October.

Slave Lake A family received keys in November.

Alfred Nikolai received the Kenneth J. Meinert Leadership Award from Habitat for Humanity Canada.

A record number of families sold their homes back to Habitat, which allowed more families to achieve strength, stability, and independence through the Habitat program. It is always a special day when Habitat is approached by a homeowner who has achieved success and wants to move on from the program. It is a tremendous benefit to Habitat to refresh a “Buy Back” home at a low cost in order to provide another family with the opportunity for affordable home ownership.

another winfor families!

Homeowners’ quality of employment increased after moving into a Habitat

home. Habitat families also work fewer jobs and report greater stability.

ReStoreHabitat is fortunate to have a social enterprise to help offset the costs of the affordable home ownership program.

Fourth Store in EdmontonOn September 16th, the ribbon was cut and the doors were opened to Habitat Edmonton’s newest – and biggest – ReStore. The 32,000 square feet store is located at 4004 99 Street NW. ReStore South has ample room for the practical and interesting items that ReStore sells as well as plenty of room for volunteers to help.

ReStore accepts donations of building materials and other items and sells them to the general public at a profit. The proceeds help cover Habitat Edmonton’s fundraising administration costs. ReStore is a wonderful way to generate needed funds and to engage volunteers who like to use their skills in a retail, people-oriented setting while being great stewards of the environment.

home ownership program works

how habitat’s affordable

$

%

We identify eligible homeowners and prepare them for

home ownership.

1We help families build their homes

with grants, donated funds, materials and volunteer labour.

2We reinvest all mortgage

payments back into the home ownership program.

5

Families work 500 hours of sweat equity as the down

payment for their home.

3Families’ interest-free mortgage payments are never more than

25% of their income.
