JURY

Umberto D’Eramo, EFIAP, MPSA, GPUCR3 - GPUVIP2, PSA Country Membership Director for Italy, was born in Rome in 1954, resident and self-employed in Sulmona. Adjunct Professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Neurology at the Universita La Sapienza in Rome and Palermo.

Scientific researcher, specializing in digitalized biometry and movement analysis. Amateur photographer since 1974.

For years participant in numerous competitions with some success, as of today he collected more than 90 first prizes in international competitions. He has many exhibitions (both collective and personal) under his name, both in Italy and abroad. Also winner of the 10th edition of the Flor-ence Biennale Contemporary Art competition of 2015 in the digital photography section.

Avishek Das, EFIAP Bronze, EFIP, GPU Crown 2, SSS/r, is an Indian born documentary photog-rapher who is currently associated with International news photo agency SOPA Images Limited, Hongkong as photo journalist.

His photographs and writings have already been published in different websites and photo competition in national and international level. His photographs from reportage and journalism events are regularly featured on Yahoo Global, The Guardian, Forbes Magazine, BBC, Getty Images and many more. He bagged more than 480 national and international awards including bronze, silver and gold medals

He has been appointed as Jury Member for 40+ national and international competitions. For his photographic development and achievement recently he has been awarded with distinction

EFIAP bronze, Crown Level 2, SSS/r, EFIP, GPA PESGSPC, Hon. CPE, Hon. WPAI and Hon. TPAs.

Yasser Alaa Mobarak, AFIAP, AICS, LRPS, was born in 1993. He is an award-winning photog-rapher from Alexandria, Egypt. He has won photography prizes from Sony World Photography Awards, National Geographic Traveler India, National Geographic Egypt, International Federation of Photographic Art, Photographic Society of America and Prix De La Photographie Paris. Yass-er’s works have been featured in The Guardian, VICE, National Geographic Magyarország, National Geographic Srbija, Digital Camera World Magazine, Amatuer Photographer Magazine, Photogra-pher’s Forum Magazine, N-Photo Magazine, Smart Photography Magazine, Silvershotz Magazine, Adobe Blog and PBS NewsHour. He is holder of AFIAP distinction from the International Federation of Photographic Art, Licentiate Distinction (LRPS) from Royal Photographic Society and Associ-ateship from Image Colleague Society International. He was judge at Adobe Youth Voices Awards, Romania’s National Creativity Contest, The Photographic Angle and Youth Journalism International Contest. He is visiting Faculty at Delhi College of Photography and Author at Digital Photography School.

ABOUT THE SALON

Dear photographers,

We are pleased to share the catalogue for an International Exhibition of Art Photography – Baku 2021 held under the patronage of FIAP, PSA, IAAP and GPCA.

As organizers of this International Exhibition of Art Photography we have collected 7211 photos of 426 authors from 63 countries worldwide.

The photos abound in specifi cultural features giving the exhibition high artistic quality. We are proud to organize International Exhibition of Art Photography – Baku 2021.

The catalogue of award-winning photographs, grouped in four themes, will leave a good memory of our salon for all photographers, which was held in Azerbaijan in 2021.

On behalf of Gilavar Photo Club of Azerbaijan, as organizer of such exhibition, I would like to express our gratitude to all participants and look forward to the next International Exhibitions of Art Photography in the period ahead.

GILAVAR PHOTO CLUB OF AZERBAIJAN

Gilavar Photo Club of Azerbaijan was established on December 1, 2017 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The club is engaged in local and international photo competitions. Photo Club has been a member of FIAP international photography since December 19, 2017 and has been approved as an individual local photo club in Azerbaijan - ILFIAP.

Gilavar is a name of the warm southern wind which blows across eastern Azerbaijan throughout the year, particularly in Absheron peninsula. The Gilavar is mainly observed in the summer months. The wind blows from land to sea.

BEST AUTHOR

Cristina Garzone EFIAP/d1, was born in Matera and lives in Florence. She

has dedicated herself for years to photography with focus on reportage. She has participated in countless Italian and foreign photo-graphic competitions, receiving many and prestigious awards over the years. Among the most im-portant, the 1st Prize in the prestigious “3rd Emirates Photographic Compe-tition” in Abu Dhabi in 2010 and the Grand Prize in the 8th edition of the “Emirates Award of Photography” in Abu Dhabi, where she won among 8500 participants from 58 countries with 36,000 photos in competition, with the portfolio “Pilgrim-age to Lalibela”. Since 2007 she is a member of the Fotoclub “Il Cupo-lone” of Florence and since October 2020 she is also a member of the Fotoclub Sille Sanat Saray of Konya in Turkey. Her images have taken part in the Italian national photogra-phy team in the Fiap International competitions, winning the FIAP World Cup in Andorra in 2005, in Belgium in 2011, and in Italy in 2014. In February 2018, she was awarded with the EFIAP/p, first Italian woman to achieve this goal. In April 2020 she was awarded the highest honor of international photog-raphy MFIAP (Maitre de la Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographique), once again maintaining the record in Ita-ly of being the first and only Italian woman photographer to have achieved such an important title. In January 2021 she was awarded with EFIAP/d1. In December 2021 with her photo club ‘IL CUPOLONE’ won the 16th FIAP Club World Cup 2021 with two photos.

In October 2015 she was invited to Muscat in Oman to rep-resent the Italian Federation FIAF. She counted many personal exhibitions in Italy and abroad, among all “Albenga Internation-al Photography” in 2014 e 2016 (when she was besides the Ar-tistic Director of the event), in 2016 the most important Swiss photo event “Photo Muensingen 2016”, and in October 2016 in Salzburg (Austria). In October 2019 she was the best author among 3234 participants and 11500 photos in the prestigious “Skylife International Contest” organized by Turkish Airlines.

Azerbaijan is the Land of Fire and the Pearl of the Caucasus, a land where eastern colours combine magnificently with western progress. Azerbaijan is a country of unique nature, unmatched culture, cen-turies of history with its customs and traditions and fine cuisine; a place which will satisfy the expecta-tions of the most sophisticated gastronomists, and finally, it is the country of Caucasian hospitality and friendliness.

Azerbaijan is situated at the eastern side of the Transcaucasia (or South Caucasus) on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The population of Azerbaijan ex-ceeds 9.8 million and the territory covers an area of 86 600 square kilometers. According to both of these figures, Azerbaijan is the largest country of the South Caucasus. The City of Baku is the capital and the country’s largest city. The National language here is Azerbaijani. However, Russian is also widely used and many younger residents also speak En-glish. Azerbaijan shares borders with Iran (765 km), Turkey (15 km), Russia (390 km), Georgia (480 km) and Armenia (1007 km). The eastern shores of the country are washed by the waters of the Caspian Sea.

Historically a part of the Great Silk Road and situ-ated at the crossroads of the geopolitical, economic and cultural interests of many nations and civiliza-tions, Azerbaijan has, since ancient times, aroused the interests of great minds, scientists, travellers and historians. References to this amazing land, located on the western coast of the Caspian Sea and in the eastern part of the South Caucasus, can be found in the ancient writings of Herodotus, Strabo, and Clau-dius Ptolemy. Azerbaijan has an amazing historical and cultural heritage with more than 7500 natural, archeological, architectural, and historical monu-ments. Cave drawings at Gobustan, Momine-Khatun

and Garabaghlar mausoleums, the Palace of Sheki Khans, the Maiden Tower, the castles of Absheron, medieval manuscripts decorated with magnificent miniature paintings, antique rugs, and works of lit-erature, arts and sculpture – all of this is just a small part of the country’s rich and priceless heritage.

Azerbaijan is often referred to as the “Land of Fire”. It is known that the majority of those residing on this territory before the Common Era were fire worshippers. Since then, the country has preserved the ancient evidence of that era: cave paintings, statues of gods and ancient temples. Two of the most vivid examples of this heritage are the temple of fire-worshippers (“Ateshgah”) at Surakhani near Baku and “Yanardag”, translated as the “burning mountain”. According to legend, “Ateshgah” temple was built by Indian fire worshippers, who arrived here after learning about the eternally burning fire, emit-ted from the ground, and were so amazed by what they had seen, that they decided to build a temple on this very place. These lands were considered to be sacred for centuries and throughout history were worshipped by the followers of Zoroastrianism, Hin-duism and Sikhism.

The fire rhetoric, passed from generation to gen-eration, has been reflected in the many artistic works of Azerbaijani masters throughout the centuries, and has recently reached its culmination in the form of The “Flame Towers” complex. Constructed in Baku not long ago, the Flame Towers have, in very a short period of time, become a breathtaking architectural landmark of the capital city, embodying a tribute to our history, and representing contemporary Azer-baijan – a new, ambitious country, developing and progressive, but still loyal to its roots and origins.

Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea and of the Caucasus region. Baku is located 28 metres (92 ft) below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world and also the largest city in the world located below sea level. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, alongside the Bay of Baku.

Baku is divided into twelve administrative districts (raions) and 48 townships. Among these are the townships on the islands of the Baku Archipelago, and the town of Oil Rocks built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 kilometres (37 miles) away from Baku. The Inner City of Baku, along with the Shirvanshah’s Palace and Maiden Tower, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. According to the Lonely Planet’s ranking, Baku is also among the world’s top ten destinations for urban nightlife.

The palace was the former residence of the rulers of the Shirvanshahs. It is a complex where, in addition to the palace itself, can also be found a courtyard of the Diwankhana, the courthouse, the Shirvanshahs’ burial vault, the palace mosque of 1441 with its minaret, the bathhouse and the mausoleum of the court scholar, Sayid Yahya Bakuvi. The palace complex was built in the period from the XIII to the XVI century. On the palace itself, no inscriptions have survived. Therefore, the time of its construction

is determined by the dates on the inscriptions on various architectural monuments, which relate to the palace complex. In 1964, the palace complex was declared a museum-preserve. In 2000, a unique architectural and cultural ensemble, along with the fortified walls enclosed by the historic part of the city and the Maiden Tower, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Shirvanshahs Palace is considered one of the pearls of the architecture of Azerbaijan.

Qiz Qalasi (The Maiden Tower) is a 12th century monument in the Old City, Baku, Azerbaijan. Along with the Shirvanshahs’ Palace, dated to the 15th century, it forms a group of historic monuments listed in 2001 under the UNESCO World Heritage List of Historical Monuments as cultural property, Category III. It is one of Azerbaijan’s most distinctive national emblems.

The Maiden Tower houses a museum, which presents the story of historic evolution of the Baku city. Qiz Qalasi is a legendary place and world-famous landmark in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan. The Tower is covered by cloud of mysteries and legends which are rooted to the History of Azerbaijan and national Culture of Azerbaijan. The pool of tower’s epics and legends is a part of Azerbaijan’s culture and national heritage.

Consequent to the receding of the sea shore line of the Caspian Sea, a strip of land emerged. This land was developed between the 9th and 15th centuries, when the walls of the old city, the palace including the huge bastion of the Maiden Tower were built

The Heydar Aliyev Center is a 57,500 m2 (619,000 sq ft) building complex in Baku, Azerbaijan designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid and noted for its distinctive architecture and flowing, curved style that eschews sharp angles. The center is named after Heydar Aliyev, the first secretary of Soviet Azerbaijan from 1969 to 1982, and president of Azerbaijan Republic from October 1993 to October 2003. Heydar Aliyev Center had an official soft-

opening ceremony on 10 May 2012 held by current president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

In 2007, Zaha Hadid was appointed as the design architect of the Center after a competition. In 2014, the Center won the Design Museum’s Design of the Year Award 2014 despite concerns about the site’s human rights record. This makes Zaha Hadid the first woman to win the top prize in that competition.

Historical monument. The temple of fire worshippers Ateshgah, located on the Absheron peninsula on the outskirts of Surakhani village, 30 km from the centre of Baku, was revered in different times by Zoroastrians, Hindus and Sikhs. The current constructions of the temple date back to the XVII century. As a result of excavations, far more ancient artifacts were discovered here. The pentagonal

complex has an open courtyard with temple-altar in the center which was the place of pilgrimage for worshippers. By the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ateshgah was declared a State historical-architectural reserve. This open-air museum has been recently restored. Different workshops and souvenir galleries are located here now. 30 km from Baku.

Azerbaijan has been historically known as the Land of Fire because of its rich oil and gas resources. The natural fire that have been blazing in various parts of the country for millennia have greatly influenced the beliefs and traditions of the local people and has been celebrated in works of literature and art. An example of this natural phenomenon is found 25 kilometres from Baku, in a place known as Yanardagh located in the village of Mahammadli. The natural gas that seeps onto the surface gives this mountain (whose name translates as ‘burning mountain’) its

famous ‘burning’ look. In order to protect Yanardagh and attract tourists here, this area was declared a historical, cultural and natural reserve in 2007. Today Yanardagh reserve is a favourite destination for tourists visiting the country. The mountain appears to be covered in tongues of flame from its foot to its peak, resembling red tulips. At first, such an unusual sight may give a strange impression, but this feeling turns into fascination upon watching the fire majestically seep out of the mountain core. 25 km from Baku.

Gobustan preserve is located in the eastern part of Azerbaijan, in the area of the Boyukdash, Kichikdash and Jingirdagh Mountains of Greater Gobustan. The Gobustan preserve is widely known,not only in our Republic but also worldwide, for its rock engravings and monuments of primitive culture. These monuments are ancient drawings, cupules for preparing drinks and gathering rain water, two-sided hollows for tying-up animals, signs, tamgas, ancient inscriptions and so on. Revealed and registered on more than a thousand rocks and stones these

monuments were created by ancient man and are the reflection of his agricultural and intellectual activity. The Petroglyphs of Gobustan are artistic chronicles of the past. They bear great importance both for the study of the pre-history of humanity and for the study of lots of spheres of primitive art: graphics, music, dance, stone processing, etc. Gobustan’s monuments cover a period of approximately 20 thousands years beginning from the end of Upper Paleolith till the beginning of our era. 60 km from Baku.

Neft Dashlari (Oil Rocks) is an industrial settlement in Baku, Azerbaijan. The settlement forms part of the municipality of Chilov-Neft Dashlari in the Khazar raion. It lies 100 kilometres (62 miles) away from the Azerbaijani capital Baku, and 55 kilometres (34 miles) from the nearest shore in the Caspian Sea. A full town on the sea, it was the first oil platform in Azerbaijan, and the first operating offshore oil platform in the world, incorporating numerous drilling platforms. It is featured in the Guinness Book

as the world’s first offshore oil platform.The settlement began with a single path out

over the water and grew into a system of paths and platforms built on the back of ships sunk to serve as the Neft Dashlari’s foundation. The most distinctive feature of Neft Dashlari is that it is actually a functional city with a population of about 2,000 and over 300 kilometres (190 miles) of streets built on piles of dirt and landfill.
