Colleges like St.Ann’s, St.Mary’s and others showcased their talent through various plays like, ‘Log KyaKahenge’, ‘Logon kiSoch’ and ‘LGBT’, which gave out strong messages about women empowerment, gender discrimination and the fight for gay rights, which had the audience applauding in awe.

Rangmanch provides the students with a platform where they can voice out their opinions and ideas through the medium of plays and bring out the best in them. After a rather daunting task for the judges, St.Ann’s was adjudged the runners up for their amazing piece on women empowerment and the group from St .Francis college from the B.Scstream bagged the winning trophy for their captivating script and mesmerizing performance on gender discrimination. The event came to an end with Mr. Shenoy’s inspiring speech acknowledging the efforts of the students and of the college, urging them to continue providing them with this gravitating platform for the consecutive years. Trophies and participation certificates were given away as a token of appreciation.

Rangmanch was an honest endeavor by the Mosaic team guided by Mrs.ReenaDewan, Dept. of English to make it a grand success.

With this thought in our mind each one of us eagerly waited for the fresher’s day which was held on 3 rd July 2015. The theme given to us was VIBGYOR which indicated the beautiful colors of a rainbow. Finally the day had arrived and every around seemed so beautiful and colorful. With mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement in our heart we took our seats and waited for the show to begin. Beginning with prayer, followed by various cultural programs such as dance, music and drama it was such a delight to watch our seniors perform for us. We were made aware about the rules and regulations of the college along with various fun filled activities coming for us. The miss fresher’s contest was one among the highlights of the show hosted by our seniors in Hyderabadi style with lots of dance music and comedy forming a party of it. Finally the day came to an end with everyone clicking pictures, interacting with people, making new friends and carrying home lots of beautiful memories. This day indeed turned out to be a memorable one for every student at the fresher’s party in different ways and will be cherished forever.

International Women’s Day Celebration- 8th March, 2016

International Women's Day, is celebrated across different regions on March 8 every year, and so was it celebrated at St. Francis College too . In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women for their economic, political and social achievements.

The day was set apart to reiterate that a woman is the epitome of love, sacrifice, care, with the inborn ability to nurture life. ‘To sum up a woman completes life with man as the other half. Without her the circle is not complete .She fulfills various roles.

The International Women's Day theme for 2016 was "Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality". The anchors for the program

included Anitha Sibi and Tabitha Ramona. The anchors highlighted the significance of women in a very beautiful manner. The programme began with the lighting of the lamp and a prayer sung by the choir. The programme later continued with an introduction of the theme by Sr. Dorine Mendonca. Later, the program continued with a prayer by a group of sisters. There was then a Kuchipudi dance performed by two girls, which was remarkable, therefore. Later, there was a speech by Mrs. Anitha Sibi

which was followed by a speech by a student and our Principal Dr.Sr. Christine Fernandez . Ms. Chandana Chakraborthy who was the Chief Guest spoke of how the gender bias still continues in many ways and how women need to assert ourselves

wherever needed.

On the same day the college also bid farewell to Mrs. Geetha Anand, a faculty of the Department of Management Studies (UG) on the occasion of her superannuation. Later, there was a prize distribution ceremony.

Farewell Function

Farewell day for our final year students along with the Founded Prizes distribution was held on March 19th, 2016. An eagerly awaited event, the day in its totality was incredible. It was an extremely grand affair organised

by the management along with the Dean - Student Affairs and the

students of St. Francis College. It recognised the achievements of the students who are all set to be full-

fledged graduates all set to leave the portals of the college which had become their home since three years or more( for Post-graduate final years) . It was a kind of tribute to their efforts which made sure that the name St. Francis, takes

you to places and enables a perfect platform to kickstart a career or a vocation in

life.

The stage was beautifully decorated according to the theme for the event. It was set in a way whereby it could prioritize

the goal of the institution - ALATE – Wings to Fly( which mean)- Sky is the limit. The programme started at 10:30 A.M with a musical rendition by the choir and a beautiful welcome dance. Our

Principal, Sr. Christine Fernandes, expressed her happiness at the contribution of all the students and congratulated the graduating batch with best wishes for their bright future. The Dean – Academics, Ms. P.C Nirmala, presented the college report which was an amalgamation of the highlights of the ending academic year including the felicitation of the faculty with awards and acknowledgements ; as well as the reports of all the college

activities, trips, fests etc. It was a proud moment not only for the graduating batch, but also for the entire college as this was the time to extend warm gratitude for the contributions made over the past years.

After a heart warming performance by U.G 2nd years, the felicitation of the dignitaries along with the chief guest for the day – Dr. Sr. Laila Francis, former principal of St. Francis Junior College, took place. This was also the day on which the students who

excelled in their performances in all fields: academics, co – curricular, extra curricular, N.S.S, N.C.C, Sports etc were rewarded. The students were awarded gold medals for exceptional academic performances in each department followed by founded prizes, special recognition prizes, along with scholarships definitely boosted the morale of the prize winners and also inspired others to aim higher. One of the main events of the Farewell 2016 was the Ms.Francis competition. The 10 U.G and 6 P.G finalists rocked the stage with their mesmerising presence. They put the judges of both the talent hunt and the “Question & Answer” Round in a tough spot and pushed beyond the usual boundaries of talent . In the most literal sense, they proved that they had wings like everyone, but its just that they know how to use them better than the rest. The tough competition resulted in a nail biting wait both for the finalists as well as the audience. Only a stellar performance could have grabbed such attention from the audience. These events made the crowd go over-enthusiastic. The climax was when students cheered for their lecturers acting/dancing/performing on stage. The cultural events ended with a dance-drama dedicated to the seniors, in which was depicted their past-life in college( the last three years) that left them all emotional as they took a tour down their memory lane. The efforts paid off as the level of entertainment was at its peaks and so was the purpose

served and goal accomplished.

The suspense ended and cheers erupted in

the auditorium as soon as the results were announced, the winners were heartily cheered for and deservingly so. So with the event which witnessed such amazing performances, great words of wisdom and the ever lasting spirit of the Francisians will surely be memorable for all those who were a part of it. The vote of thanks followed by the national anthem completed the ceremony on a very cheerful and emotional note. In short, it left an indelible mark on all those present.

Affairs, Asst Prof, Dept of English.

The theme for the contest was the representation of various states of India. And true to the theme, all the selected contestants arrived in Indian costumes which represented particular state. The judges for the contest were Ms. Preeti Mohan, brand ambassador of the metro and **The hosts for the programme were Nandika Ravi and Karishma Assodani, both students from Mass Communication who tickled the funny bones of everyone in the audience with their various antics.

EXPRESSIONS FEST – ESCAPE RELOADED

St. Francis College for Women hosted its annual Intra- College Cultural Fest ESCAPE Reloaded on the 22nd September, 2015. It was a delight to see all the clubs of the college under Expressions: Spectrum, Cofee, Arista, Prakriti and the E-Cell come together to host a spectacular show. The students of the college all geared up to organise and participate in the fest which had events not just for the students but fun activities lined up for the staff of the college as well.

The Inaugural ceremony saw students, teachers and reporters from the media in large numbers who awaited eagerly for the Chief guest, Akhil Akkineni. The students cheered and waved to the young debutant of the Tollywood Industry who greeted the crowd and expressed great joy to

relive his college days as part of being a chief guest in an all girls college. He posed with the girls for

selfies and said that he would love to visit the college any day again. After the Inaugural there were a line of events ranging from Walk like a celebrity, Dance events, Scirex, Bhaag Francis Bhaag, Table No.21, Nature Bucket List Challenge, The Wild Goose Chase, Game of the Throne, Mock Market, The Amazing Race, Action Replay and many more events.

With feet tapping music and entertaining performers, the day was a fabulous one. The event came to an end with the Valedictory that was graced by an ex-student and Tollywood actress Tejaswi Madiwada who gave out the prizes to the winners of the day and was ectastic about returning to her college in her celebrity status.

The fest turned out to be a first of its kind, an occasion for Francisians to take the day off only for entertainment and fun. It was also a proud moment for the faculty coordinators to see their students work together to put up a successful and a spectacular show.

XPRESSIONS 2015-2016 - Student Report To lead Expressions as a student President has been a task, a task of victory, strength, courage and teamwork. I would rather say, its been a journey of responsibility and passion. This is an annual arts fest which aims at providing a platform for students to explore their opportunities and outshine their interests. In academic year 2015-2016 Expressions was part of ESCAPE RELOADED, which was an intra –college fest, a collaboration of all departments of St.Francis college. Here a student irrespective of his s stream of study, could participate based on his skills and interest. The theme of Expressions 2015-2016 was "Awake, aspire and acknowledge" The strength and power of Expressions lies in its nine clubs which represent each department under arts. La Fiesta- Literature Chanakya-Public Administration Rhetoric- Political science Smile- Social management Harivillu- Telugu Psycon- Psychology Fire- Economics Quest hour- History zeitgeist- Mass communication.

All these nine clubs conduct activities and events all year through which students participate and gain experience. The success and hardwork behind Expressions is supported by the faculty coordinators who lead it-This year Expressions performed the herculean task of co-ordinating events under the able guidance of Ms. Reena Dewan and Ms. Haritha of the Department of English. Dr Reena Deewan and Mrs.Harita from the English department, St.Francis college for women. - Karishma Asoodani, Student President - Xpressions 2015-2016

NATALE FEST (17TH AND 18TH DECEMBER 2015 )

On the 17th December,a two -day annual fest organized by the FACE club took off. The fest was held in the spirit of Christmas season. The fest included a bag of healthy competitions. The fest was started by an energetic flash mob. It was followed by various

competitions such as Candle making, Greeting card making, Bible quiz and Rangoli. The day ended with the FACE club members coming to the door of every department to sing Christmas carols.

The fest continued to the next day with some more competitions such as Model crib, Christmas tree decorations, Live crib, Icing of the cake, Portrayal of Biblical characters and Carol singing competition. The fest was a success as it had not only

managed to draw Catholics and Christians but also students practicing other religions. It was thoroughly enjoyed by the students. The fest had done an exemplary job promoting the only Christian club in college that is the FACE club.

The International Women's Day theme

for 2016 was "Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality". The anchors for the program included Anitha Sibi and Tabitha Ramona. Anitha Sibi which was followed by a speech by a student and our Principal Dr.Sr. Christine Fernandez . Ms. Chandana Chakraborthy who was the Chief Guest spoke of how the gender bias still continues in many ways and how women need to assert ourselves wherever needed.

On the same day the college also bid farewell to Mrs. Geetha Anand, a faculty of the Department of Management Studies (UG) on the occasion of her superannuation. Later, there was a prize distribution ceremony.

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life John- 8:12- the Bible The college management in collaboration with FACE club organized a heart touching prayer session for all final year UG and PG students on 15th February, 2016 led by Fr. VIJAY on the theme SPREADING THE LIGHT. He addressed the students with an inspirational message: we are the result of the choices me make. This was followed by the Principal -. Dr.Sr. Christine

Fernandes message that enlightened the students about how we need to keep the flame of St Francis burning brightly, she spoke of how students continue to make a positive difference in different parts of the world . The students were given a candle each and were led in prayer by the Principal during which the students’ promised to spread the light of love to everyone they meet in their lives The students walked out of the hall with a smile recalling the sweet memories and all that they had achieved in this college. Farewell cum Award Function

Farewell day for our final year students along with the Founded Prizes distribution was held on March 19th, 2016. An eagerly awaited event, the day in its totality was

incredible. It was an extremely grand affair organised by the

management along with the Dean - Student Affairs and the students of St. Francis College. It recognised the achievements of the students who are all set to be full-fledged

graduates all set to leave the portals of the college which had become their home since three years or more( for Post-graduate final years) . It was a kind of tribute to their efforts which made sure that the name St. Francis, takes you to places and

enables a perfect platform to kickstart a career or a vocation in life.

The stage was beautifully decorated according to the theme for the event. It was set in a way whereby it could prioritize the goal of the institution - ALATE – Wings to Fly( which mean)-

Sky is the limit. The programme started at 10:30 A.M with a musical rendition by the choir and a beautiful welcome dance. Our Principal,

Sr. Christine Fernandes, expressed her happiness at the contribution of all the students and congratulated the

graduating batch with best wishes for their bright future. The Dean – Academics, Ms. P.C Nirmala, presented the college report which was an amalgamation of the highlights of the ending academic year including the felicitation of the faculty with awards and acknowledgements ; as well as the reports of all the college activities, trips, fests etc.

This was also the day on which the students who excelled in their performances in all fields:

academics, co – curricular, extra curricular, N.S.S, N.C.C, Sports etc were rewarded. The students were awarded gold medals for exceptional academic performances in each department followed by founded prizes, special recognition prizes, along

with scholarships definitely boosted the morale of the prize winners and also inspired others to aim higher. One of the main events of the Farewell 2016 was the Ms.Francis competition. The 10 U.G and 6 P.G finalists rocked the stage with their mesmerising presence. They put the judges of both the talent hunt and the “Question & Answer” Round in a tough spot and pushed

beyond the usual bound

aries of talent . In the most literal sense, they proved that they had wings like

everyone, but its just that they know how to use them better than the rest. The tough competition resulted in a nail biting wait both for the finalists as well as the audience. Only a stellar performance

could have grabbed such attention from the audience. The efforts paid off as the level of entertainment was at its peaks and so was the purpose served and goal accomplished.

The suspense ended and cheers erupted in the auditorium as soon as the results were announced, the winners were heartily cheered for and deservingly so.

Ms. X. Stella Martina,

Dean – Student Affairs, Asst Prof, Dept of English.

LIFE AS A

FRANCISIAN

(From FRANCIS DIARIES)

First day at St. Francis The memories still excite me Strangers all around & nothing seemed easy Days went on to become weeks Weeks to become months Strangers became the best of friends & everything we did HAD to be fun Projects, assignments, internals & not to forget the hall ticket line The biggest problem we thought life could show us was the attendance decline And only in the last semester Did reality hit us hard The final calls & announcements Told us its time to depart “A whole new world outside” they said Waiting to be explored But we are always going to miss the life, The one we leave behind the Francis doors But oh wait! We are FRANCISIANS, And no we do not cry Because you know what we are taking from here? We are taking those “WINGS TO FLY”! Iffath Hussain B.Sc III N

CHOIR REPORT 2016

CHOIR stands for co-operation, harmony, opportunity, involvement and responsibility. Keeping this viewpoint in mind, the choir enhanced the worship of God and displayed great amounts of enthusiasm and commitment in fulfilling what they stand for. There were times when they came early and went back home late, devoted to maintain the standards of the St Francis choir. The co-ordinators and all the members of the choir received a great deal of support and

encouragement for all they tried to achieve : from Ms. Tina Fernandes, Mrs. Mary Dias and Mrs. Alice David who helped the choir to shine bright, by reassuring them of their position of the NIGHTINGALES of St Francis.

The choir of St. Francis is an open, warm, and a multi-cultural group. It gives the opportunity to students every year to be a part of this mini-family that represents the macrocosm of St. Francis College. Hence the auditions for the year 2014-2015 were held in the month of July and this was judged by Deveney Roberts and Nishika Pachigalla. The fresher’s seemed very passionate and it was amazing to see such a great response. A total of 120 girls auditioned, out of all, 60 captivating voices were chosen. The nightingales with a keyboard as their chief instrument, had thus jumpstarted an amazing year.

The choir performed for the Independence day celebrations of the college, singing the song “SWADESH” and the song “SUNO GAUR SE DUNIA WALO”, which build a nationalistic fervour among the audience.

Then came the celebration of the silver jublee of four lecturers who enjoyed 25 years of enriching life in Francis. The choir sang for the teachers and made it an unforgettable and meaningful event for them.

Next was the Fresher’s party where the choir looked dashing with their masks on and they welcomed the fresher’s by performing an medley of famous energetic English numbers. At the national Seminar conducted by the chemistry department and the choir led all into prayer by singing” MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT” and sang the “CANDLE SONG” for the lighting of the lamp.

December being the month of giving and receiving and , and of Christmas carols - is the most memorable time for the choir as they come together and spend a lot of time practising for various competitions. This season is eagerly awaited and is cherished the most. This year our nightingales actively took part in a number of carol singing competitions organized in the twin cities. Some of them being, United Carol Singing competition organized by Little Flower High School.

The carol singing competition held by St Marys Degree College, Yousufguda, was memorable- the choir won the first place with their charismatic performance as they swayed through the song MARY ROCK and TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY. They were appreciated by the judges and one of them passed an unforgettable comment : what they always heard from others of the Francis choir came alive that day when they witnessed the singing.

Every year the college conducts NATALE, where in all the college students participate in various Christmas activities, playing a major role in the event, as they perform several numbers, and the choir is recognized for their hardwork and are given a token of appreciation.

In a very special event to mark the birthday of our Principal, Dr. Sr Christine Fernandes, the choir sang a blessing song called the “SAINTS AND SAVIOUR” which really made the day memorable! The same was done on the birthdays of our Vice-Principal and Correspondent.

The choir of St Francis also performs its duty as they sing for Mass services such as Ash Wednesday, Mother Mary’s feast and a Mass invoking blessings at the start of the academic year. Apart from participating in competitions and events outside college, the choir also dutifully sings the prayer of St. Francis and the college song every Monday and Friday with great reverence and respect, renewing spirituality in every soul present in the college, keeping up with the heritage of St. Francis The choir also begins all the events that are held in the college, starting from convocations to valedictories to investitures etc., Our nightingales remained poised even when times are challenging and manage to put up a marvellous show throughout the year.

All of this was only possible because of our mentors mentioned earlier. Their creative vision and encouragement inspired interest and enthusiasm and made singing in the choir such a great pleasure. The choir is also thankful to the Principal and the Vice Principal for their support and prayers. Last but not the least the choir feels obliged to all the staff and our dear college mates for being appreciative of our work.

The nightingales are ecstatic to keep singing and to make Francis proud.

Class Attendance using Tablets

The college is gradually moving into automated attendance using tablets instead of registers in the classroom. Students have been issued ID cards with an embedded RFID chip. The tablets are equipped with RFID readers that can scan the roll number as the student presents her ID card. A teacher is able to complete marking attendance for a class in just about five minutes. As teachers are getting used to the system, there has been a positive response. Teachers are spared the effort of computing shortage of attendance at the end of each month as now it becomes automated with tablets being used. Latecomers to the class would obviously lose their attendance and students have to carry their ID cards with them daily.

So the merits outweigh the de-merits with the new system in place.
