A Message from the Fiscal Year 2021 Chair

Hello CRNAs, SRNAs, and Supporters of the AANA Foundation,

Fiscal Year 2021 has been another memorable year – social distancing, mask-wearing, increased anxiety and depression, school or work from home, vaccines, and more have affected our lives. COVID-19 continues to have an enormous impact on the world as we knew it. Thank you to all who continue to treat and serve others during this pandemic.

Despite the incredibly challenging times over this past year, the Foundation was able to pivot and carry on its important business, including the support and development of the prestigious Fellows of the AANA and Watchful Care, volume II, which details the vibrant progression of our wonderful profession from the 1990s to present day. Also this year, the Board added diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to our core values and created DEI vision and values statements and a DEI team to ensure progress. Congratulations to the inaugural class of Fellows and thank you to our professional pioneers and leaders who made our rich history possible and continue to advance the profession.

While amid this pandemic, the AANA Foundation celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2021. Since 1981, the Foundation has awarded more than $5 million in scholarships, fellowships, grants, and poster presentations to more than 4,200 individuals. In addition, more than $1.7 million has been allocated to health policy research studies that benefit the profession.

In recognition of the 40th anniversary, so many gave above and beyond this year. In FY21 alone, annual fund donations totaled more than $390,000 to fund Foundation programs and projects. In addition, 17 new Friends for Life are supporting the Foundation with a legacy gift. Ruby is the 40th anniversary symbol and represents nobility, passion, and an eternal flame, much like the passion CRNAs have for the nurse anesthesia profession. In celebration of the Foundation’s 40th anniversary, I chose to make a ruby gem-level anniversary gift of $2,500 to the annual fund and asked others to join me with the goal of 40 ruby donors for the 40th anniversary. This goal was exceeded, and you can read the names of the ruby donors within this annual report. We are eternally grateful to all of you and to all Foundation donors!

In addition to our donors, we have a tremendous group of volunteers who spend their free time reviewing research grants and scholarships, speaking to others on behalf of the Foundation, raising funds, and connecting with CRNAs to tell the Foundation’s story. Thank you to our volunteers!

After serving on the AANA Foundation board for six years, and as its Chair this past year, my term concludes following the AANA 2021 Annual Congress. I will be handing over the chair position to my talented colleague, Stephen Finder, DNP, CRNA.

Thank you to all who have given their time, treasure, and talent to the Foundation over the past 40 years in support of our mission to advance the science of nurse anesthesia education and research. We encourage you to continue your generous commitments. If you are not currently a donor or volunteer, please take this opportunity to join 40 years of Foundation supporters.

With my sincere gratitude and appreciation,

Ronald R. Castaldo, PhD, MBA, MS, CRNA, APRN, CCRN AANA Foundation, Chair

6 | AANA FOUNDATION

The AANA Foundation’s RISE Above Campaign was created to raise donations to fund costly, large-scale Health Policy Research that proves that CRNAs are safe and effective.

Several important developments have taken place in FY21:

The Proof Is Power Annual Fund supports our Annual Fund Achievements (see page 5). Proof is Power programs create opportunities for CRNAs and SRNAs nationwide through

Fellowships, Grants, Leadership Opportunities, Scholarships, Posters and more. These programs are the result of hard work, bright minds, and the generosity of donors and volunteers

who believe in the power of education and research. Your support is essential. Visit crnasproofispower.com to learn more or make a donation.

In FY21, research from the Anesthesia Workforce study conducted in collaboration with the Lewin Group is being finalized for publication. The manuscript “Work Patterns, Socio-Demographic Characteristics and Job Satisfaction of the CRNA Workforce,” which was published in Nursing Outlook reported on a range of work-related factors and their relationship to job satisfaction among CRNAs. Results confirmed that CRNAs practicing with greater levels of clinical autonomy experience higher levels of job satisfaction. The second workforce-related manuscript, “Anesthesia Services: A Workforce Model and Projections of Demand and Supply” remains under review at Nursing Economic$. This study reports on estimates of future supply and demand including potential shortages in the anesthesia provider workforce and the impacts of changes in new entrants to the profession, retirement rates, and shifts in practice model utilization patterns.

Additional research was undertaken on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on CRNA practice,

including the impacts of state and federal regulatory changes. A mixed-methods study incorporating a quantitative survey of practice changes as well as a series of qualitative interviews with CRNAs impacted by COVID-19 was conducted. “Shared Experiences of CRNAs During COVID-19,” published in the AANA Journal, reports on the qualitative interview findings identifying themes from the collective experience of interviewed CRNAs such as ‘CRNAs are part of the solution’ and ‘doing whatever it takes.’

A second manuscript with findings from the quantitative survey is in press at the AANA Journal. This study found that CRNAs in states that were impacted by both state and federal executive orders experienced greater expansion in their practice and were more likely to participate in caring for COVID-19 patients than CRNAs in states where no relief was granted through state executive order or that already had full Scope of Practice.

HEALTH POLICY RESEARCH (HPR)

The campaign to RISE Above for Research In Safety & Effectiveness continues to support critical, large-scale HPR studies to expand the body of research that confirms that nurse anesthetists are cost effective and safe.

Thanks to the continued generosity of State Associations, CRNAs, and the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA), donations continue to support important health services and policy research. Since the campaign’s inception, nearly $1.4 million has been donated.

Thank you to all FY21 RISE Above donors whose names are included in the Annual Donors listing.

FRIENDS FOR LIFE

The Friends for Life program helps support the future of the nurse anesthesia profession through meaningful and lasting gifts. Contributions through Friends for Life help fund and sustain programs that further research and education in anesthesia.

The minimum gift commitment to join Friends for Life is $25,000. Members may fulfill this commitment through a cash gift, but there are many other ways to meet the commitment through planned gifts like bequests as well as beneficiary designations on life insurance and retirement plans. For further information on the Friends for Life program, please contact Nat Carmichael at (847) 655-1175 or by email at [email protected].

“Thanks to your generosity, the Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will be better equipped with powerful, healthy coping mechanisms including mindfulness meditation. The tools provided to the students through this grant will be implemented into the curriculum through a wellness workshop along with a dedicated wellness room. This will provide the means to promote holistic wellness and combat the stresses of graduate school and throughout their future careers in nurse anesthesia.”
