FROM

THE PRESIDENT

DESK

Dear Friends,General Mobilisation

2016 has been a rude year for Howrah South Point.

Rude, first for the financial crisis we had to face. We search hard to resolve it but do not know yet how to do it. There is no

solution-miracle.

But everyone is invited to reflect on the possible measures to face it and find remedy.

The main source of income for our programs was the sponsorships for the children of the home and of our schools.

So let us first reflect on the meaning of partnership and the responsibility it involves from both side of the partnership.

HSP has to think that we cannot receive funds collected with hardship by our cooperators without searching how to correspond in

the best manner to the expectation of our partners. A donation is a responsibility. We have not only to serve the children entrusted to

our care with a constant renewed concern for the betterment of this service. But we have also the responsibility to see whether there

is not in our hands some possibility first to cut expenses, not at the detriment of the children, of course. We had to check up the

expenses of our schools, attract some local donors who can give copy books, uniforms and even some food for our homes.

We have also to examine how we can raise funds through our workshops. Big girls of our homes are happy for instance to make

jewelry, and we are renovating our workshops to make them more efficiently productive. We try to get good orders, for example for

our workshop making woollen cardigans,

Some homes have a vegetable garden where they can grow good vegetables and reduce the price of their food expenses.

Our Partners, for whom we are so grateful, know well that the daily bread of our children, their education as well as the modest

salary of their educators depend on their sacrifice. Indeed the sacrifice they make with their generous heart is their voluntary service

for redressing a society who forgets so quickly the children they want to rehabilitate with us.

We had to inform our partners of the inflation which has affected seriously the balance of our monthly budget

Some of you are sending money according the budget we have calculated for one home, or for a certain amount of children. It is a

great relief if the money is coming regularly. If not, we had to take from our reserves, and now we have no more reserves So

may I request you to send as regularly as possible your participation for the children (yours and ours)

Some of you are sending a certain amount of money for individual child: for that, we are also very grateful. But we must tell you

that the amount you were sending 5 or 6 years ago is now, with the inflation of these years, very insufficient to cover all expenses

(study + boarding expenses). Today, in average, the recurring expenses for one child amounts to 45 Euros or 62 Swiss francs per

month. We know that some of you make a big sacrifice in sending their monthly contribution and we are very grateful for this. But

can we make a double appeal. For those who can afford to give monthly a little more, perhaps to revise the amount of their

contribution. For those who make the maximum sacrifice in sending what they are already sending, can we appeal to them to try tofind one or two more sponsors?

We need more sponsors in any case, because each and all of our children are to be all sponsored.

But we have also some lands around our homes that are not exploited and could/ should be exploited without hampering in any

way the activities of the homes on which they are situated nearby. At Howrah (Ashaneer) and Jalpaiguri ( Bakuabari and Das

Bighas lands) we have to study how we could make these lands income generating productive. Without any imprudent haste, but

without wasting time, we have to find some competent people who can help us to exploit for the best these lands in such developing

localities. We are searching some honest, competent people knowing well the trends of the local market and proposing some plans

to exploit safely these lands.

But it is a matter of 2 or 3 years before we can expect a source of income sufficient to run our organization with a safety margin.

And during these 3 years, we have not only to run our homes and activities, but also erect some buildings in which these income

generating projects will take place. The 3 coming years are crucial.

We hope, with a lot of mobilization of our friends and our own mobilization to be able to pass through the present crisis

The joy of our children in our homes and the good fruits of our other activities are encouraging us, but we need your maximum

support, especially during these 3 years.

We have some response very encouraging, and many try their best to save the present situation. We promise to let you progressively

be informed of the progress of our efforts to face this difficult passage. In the same time, we shall receive with gratitude any help,

suggestion for overcoming the crisis. HSP is the concern of each of us, is it not?

We need also God s blessings for which we rely on your payers.

With the effort of each, we shall get surely God s blessing and we have confidence that this general mobilization will be fecund and

a source of renewal for HSP,

Father Francis Laborde

The power to write a better future

The education support programme of HSP,formal non-formal and special

schools, is a concerted attempt to make education available for the poor

and the marginalized children of our society. HSP has established several

schools for educating and empowering children of the socially challenged

who hail from the poorest families such as those of rickshaw and van

pullers, daily wage workers, maids and others in the informal sector. The

schools provide an opportunity to these children who otherwise would go

without education owing to their social and economic constraints. The

children have the opportunities for sports and extracurricular activities

such as drawing, singing, dancing, gardening, tailoring, hockey and football. Mid-day-meal is provided to the

students five days a week. Pro-interplast, Germany supports the mid-day meal program for students Buxara, EPN

and Daycare schools. Each day different meals are prepared- two days a week soybean curry with rice; another two

days rice with different seasonal vegetables; one day khichuri and boiled eggs. The students enjoy the delicious

meals every day.

The Brickfield school operates from the 1st

week of October to the beginning of May, the period when the brickfield is open and

manufacturing bricks. Most of the workers in the brickfield are migrants from states adjoining West Bengal. The brickfield closes

operations in early May and the workers return home to work on farms. They return towards the end of September. The school

works with children from 54 migrant labour households. This big break in their education creates difficulties. They forget most of

what they have learned. When they return after this forced break, it is difficult to understand the children’s language but in a few

days the children pick up.

The school functions from 9.30 am to 4 p.m. Students are divided into 3 groups according to age- group one consists of those aged

2.5 years to 4 years; the second group consists of children aged 4 years to 8 years and the third group consists of children above 8

years. The students are taught arithmetic, and Hindi, English and Bengali languages. Other activities include singing, reciting

rhymes, drawing and colouring, number games, and group activities.

The area where the school operates is not congenial for teaching and learning however the teachers struggle to keep the school

functional in the interest of the children. The student strength and attendance fluctuates- in the initial months the number of

students are generally low but by November the number students increase.

Crèche welcomes young children between the ages of 1 month to 5 years. Mothers of these children are mostly engaged as

domestic helps and fathers are daily wage workers. When parents are at work children are left unattended or in the care of their

older siblings. Thus, the younger ones are denied proper care and the older ones are prevented from going to schools. Our crèche

offer a solution to this problem- apart from safe shelter and nutritious meals children receive healthcare, immunization and age

appropriate schooling.

During the year, the Crèche had 15 children (8 boys and 7 girls) in the

age group of 6 months to 5 years.

Two of these children were newly admitted to the creche during the

year. Five of the children have been admitted to and attend formal

schools. Mothers bring the children to the crèche by 8 AM in the

morning and take them back home around 5 PM. Those enrolled in

formal schools attend classes and after classes return to the creche till

the parents come to collect them. Care giver at the creche take lessons

for those not enrolled in formal schools.

Total number of children 22(14 boys and 8 girls) within the age group 1

to 4 years

Malnutrition Children s Home ward, within PCH, is a primary health care centre which provides basic

medical care to the sick children who cannot have a proper care system at home on account of poor

economic conditions. Most children are brought here from the mobile clinics along with their mothers.

Children who are too sick to be kept in the ward are referred to the nearby nursing homes and Govt.

and private hospitals for better care. The most common health problems include malnutrition, diarrhoea,

respiratory problems, tuberculosis, worm infections and congenital anomalies. Our ward can host up to

30 children in the same time. Services are provided for new born babies up to 10 years.

Old-age Programme:

Elderly people in their last spell of life need social and economical security from the society as they live

alone either discarded by their relatives or neglected by their children. Old age is associated with other

forms of insecurities owing to a lack of concern and support. HSP provides each month minimum

nutritional support to around 500 beneficiaries by providing them with food items such as rice, pulses,

oil and Rs. 100/ in hand. Our 480 beneficiaries include mentally & physically handicapped (39), blind
