LUCILE BERTRAND

Born in 1969 in FranceLives and work in Brussels (BE)

Born in 1960 in France, Lucile Bertrand moved to New York in 1995 before settling in 2001 in Brussels, Belgium. She exhibits regularly in Europe, the US and South Korea. She usually splits her time and mind between large-scale site-specific installations and studio-made pieces. She works with a large range of materials, depending on what any projects will induce. Her reflection and researches are often based on literature and philosophy.

Between lightness and heaviness, between flight and falling, Lucile Bertrand’s work evokes immaterial elements such as wind and clouds, but also the fragility of life and absence in more dramatic occurrences. She has a preference for poor materials such as feathers, particles of dust, fabric, hair, or found objects. Soft and hard materials are regularly put in contrast to emphasize some fragility or increase the sense of danger.

“In today’s society, beset by doubt and instability, Lucile Bertrand stands as an observer of the world and shares with us, through various images tinted bitter sweet, her personal vision of a kind of disorientation, a precarious balance that can, at any time, tip the course of things on an upward or downward pathway;

leaving a sense of vertigo.”Catherine Henkinet, in exhibition catalogue

RUI CALÇADA BASTOS

Born in 1971 in Lisbon (PT)Lives and works in Lisbon (PT)

Rui Calçada Bastos studied Painting at the Porto School of Fine Arts and the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, and Visual Arts at the Centre for Art and Visual Communication – Ar.Co, in Lisbon. After a stay in Paris, at Cité international des Arts, he moved to Berlin in 2002 for a residency at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien. In 2004, Calçada Bastos was awarded the Arbeitstipendium der Senatsverweltung fur Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur in Berlin. In 2005, together with artists Sergio Belinchon, Santiago Ydanez, Paul Ekaitz and Antonio Mesones, he co-founded the artist-run space Invaliden1 in Berlin. Until 2015, Invaliden1 presented and exhibited the work of almost a hundred contemporary artists from around the world. Working with and in the cities that he traveled to or lived in (Macau, Shanghai, Paris, Lisbon, Berlin, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro).

Calçada Bastos focuses on urban landscapes, objects, shapes and situations that would perhaps be overlooked at first glance. Working with photography, video, sculpture and drawing, he explores his themes poetically, confronting the viewer with a self-referential view. In a real and metaphorical sense, the reflections, duplications and confrontations constitute variations on a leitmotiv that runs through Rui Calçada Bastos’s videos, photographs and installations dealing with self and other, inner and outer, here and there. The artist continually changes his position in a perpetual attempt to reach towards self-assurance or anchorage, which never seem to take place.

Born in 1957 in Porto (PT)Lives and works in Lisbon (PT) José Pedro Croft is one of the chief exponents of the renewal of Portuguese sculpture. His career, both as a sculptor and as a draughtsman, has been characterised from its earliest stages by a painstaking constructive process that combines his formal universe with his personal world. In the artist’s own words, “the interest of my œuvre lies in its nuances and in the little differences, not in any attempt to pigeonhole it within a specific line of work.” In short, Croft’s artistic project falls outside the path determined by schools and groups.

In connection with this notion, his works always stem from research into the processes triggered in their interior, where the visual, plastic and poetic dimensions of the objects created intermingle, producing an impression of precarious balance between the stable and unstable that, for the Portuguese artist, “reflects the transitory nature of the universe.”

His sculptures develop complex relations with their surroundings and with their own shapes and volumes by means of simple almost minimalist structures that combine the material nature of the object with its formal aspects. In some cases the latter are strengthened by the use of bright industrial paint applied, suggesting sculpture perceived as painting in relief. Furthermore, Croft uses mirrors and glass to play with effects of light, shadow and reflections in order to create new volumes and an altered sense of space, eventually giving rise to a dialectical tension between fullness and emptiness that may also be found in his works on paper.

EIRENE EFSTATHIOU

Born in 1980 in Athens (GR)Lives and work in Athens (GR)

Working in a variety of different media from printmaking and painting, to small scale installations and performance, Efstathiou’s studio practice begins with compiling archival source material, as well as material drawn from deliberate wanderings in the urban landscape, as a way to re-narrate minor histories. The works’ engagement with the source material seeks to open up a space for exploring the way found images are evocative beyond their role as illustrations or ‘the news’, and how these minor histories are inscribed on the fabric of the city, in this way performing an informal, idiosyncratic, and humanist archaeology of the present and recent past. Eirene Efstathiou attempts to learn about the density and legibility of the frenetic present, by observing past events. The questions raised in her work transcend the anecdote and speak of a common history.

Pascal Valéry Haudressy, a French artist of Tatar origin, is distinguished by his unprecedented artistic approach, with a complicit relationship between the content and the form, the format and the substance. He pioneered a new image format focusing on movement. As a cultural project manager for UNESCO, he was responsible for major international artistic events. He had launched the “Flags of Tolerance” project, which he carried out in collaboration with six eminent artists including Rauschenberg, Matta and Hunderstwasser.Pascal Haudressy explores the theme of a changing world, where biological entities ever-increasingly coexist with virtual life forms whose inevitable hostility takes the reassuring mantle of chimerical progress, which intersects with the wholesomeness of comfort. He creates a dialogue between substance and form to a paroxysm by using two basic concepts in the process of its creation: movement and installation.

GAUTHIER HUBERT

Gauthier Hubert, « Portrait d’une jeune fille ressemblant à Hitler », 2017, Oil on canvas, 29,5 x 21 cm (private collection)

Gauthier Hubert, les Maîtres chanteurs de Nuremberg, 2017, Watercolor on Arches satin 300gr, 160x113cm

Born in 1967 in Brussels (BE) Lives and works in Brussels (BE) In 1999, Gauthier Hubert won the « Prix de la jeune peinture belge » and has since shown his work in international group and solo shows, mostly in the UK, Iceland and Belgium. His painting is enigmatic in many respects – while his technique itself is characterized by a timeless and meticulous quality, the rest of his approach has a resolutely contemporary style. It shows solid swathes of vibrant colours, combined with shapes of an unsettling strangeness and a steady fascination with ugliness, which immediately draws the eye.

« Most of of his subjects have something that disturbs and can even go as far as repulse; undoubtedly because it affects humans and creates an inescapable mirror effect. A man twisting in pain, a woman with a bloody face, a three-headed monster, a beautiful woman with an absent look, a devil’s face or a series of drawings entitled Laughter Yellow. The secret of this painting, which inevitably seduces and convinces, is at least threefold. First of all, there is the quality of the pictorial rendering down to the smallest detail, and this is very important in this case, without forgetting the essential role of colours; secondly, there is the sneaky offbeat humour and, finally, there is, in addition to a set of cultural references, our inevitable human involvement and feelings. »

– Claude Lorent

Situated in a satirical dialogue with art and history, Gauthier Hubert’s paintings are extremely referenced, interspersing their composition with clues, jokes and visual puns. The title is a primary element of the work, and creates a constant back and forth between word and image.

Born 1969 Reykjavik (IS)Lives and works in Brussels (BE)

Gudny Rosa Ingimarsdottir’s artworks have been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in Iceland and in Europe. In 2008, she had a solo show at the National Gallery of Iceland. In 2013, she received the Gudmunda S. Kristinsdóttir Art Fund grant. Founded by the artist Erró in 1997, the fund’s goal is to acknowledge and encourage female artists by annually awarding one female artist with a grant. The selection committee is composed of the directors of the Reykjavik Art Museum, the Akureyri Art Museum and the National Gallery of Iceland. She was also included in the collection of the FRAC Picardie of Amiens in France.

Fascinated by water in all its states of aggregation, Gudny Rosa Ingimarsdottir works with various water dissolvable materials, such as fibre and paper itself, which are becoming increasingly predominant in her art. The artist produces drawings and paintings made up of several layers, which she cuts, peels or carves, before or after assembling them, aiming to get closer to the essence of creation. Each of these unique pieces has its own geometric structure and exists on the border between abstract and figurative. The work builds itself slowly, sometimes taking years; each line traced or erased has equal value, the remaining elements have the same strength as those removed.

The artworks and installations of Gudny Rosa Ingimarsdottir convey rhythm and silence. The methodical work process that takes place inside her studio extends into the exhibition areas, like a meditation, tranforming them into breathing spaces.

Born in 1968 in Athens (GR)lives and works in Düsseldorf (DE)

Ioannou’s artistic production consists of pictorial and minimalist interventions linked to a dialogue with the space and architecture that support them, as well as with the context of the site of exhibition. Ioannou observes the environment deeply, establishing links with its materials and its inhabitants, collecting objects of local provenance which result in compositions that question the space and give it a new lecture. The artist usually works with textiles - common or precious - cutting them in different forms and soaking them in linseed oil, sometimes tracing vertical graphite lines on the material. The oil enhances the physical qualities of the fabric, intensifies the colours and makes the painted surface transparent. Due to the manual repetition of certain resources, Athina Ioannou’s work shows similar - but never identical - visual results, through which the artists searches aesthetic satiety through a deep exploration of the same subject. Ioannou’s work is the result of perseverance and of a prolonged search, which, with a consistent style, explores themes such as rhythm, transparency, light, movement and creates compositions that reveal themselves little by little. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome under the tutelage of Jannis Kounellis, David Rabinowich and Daniel Buren as well as the Art Academy of Düsseldorf.

She has participated in several individual and collective exhibitions, among which we can highlight L’emprise du lieu curated by Daniel Buren in Dommaine Pommery, France and Avenirs de Villes / Future for Cities curated by Jean Louis Maubant in Nancy, France. Furthermore, she has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Gustave Fayet, at the Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece and at the Espace d’art Contemporain HEC in Paris, France, among others. She has received the prize of the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, the Greek Ministry for the Culture, the Art Academy of Düsseldorf and the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst). Her work is part of the collection of Museé d’Art Contemporain Gustave Fayet, Sérignan, France among others.

PIETER LAURENS MOL

Specific Impulse, 1985, ink and paper, 93 x 83.5 cm (M HKA Collection, Anvers (BE))

Born in 1971 in Lobito (Angola).Lives and works in Milan (IT) and Lisbon (PT). Pedro A.H. Paixão studied painting and drawing at Ar.Co – Arts and Visual Communication Center, Lisbon, and holds a M.F.A. in film and video from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in philosophy, from Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto, both with distinction. He is a member of the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto. He founded and directs the editorial project Disciplina sem nome (discipline without name) for the Lisbon publisher Sistema Solar | Documenta and Carmona e Costa Foundation, Lisbon.

Besides his work with other media - like video, film, or the use of slide diaporamas -, since 2007, he has created a broad cycle of graphic work. Here the pencil follows his hand, it draws creatures and characters who, as they take shape, also find a voice, as if they had something to tell us from a remote past, or from emergencies of our present. The density of his immersion in the search for sensitive thought mirrors everything he does. His work is nourished by that density, by complexity, stories and, most of all, by time.

PANOS PAPADOPOULOS

Born in 1975 in Athens (GR)Lives and works in Athens (GR) and Vienna (AT) Panos Papadopouos studied at the School of Fine Arts in Vienna and was awarded the «Meisterschülerpreis» of the Academy. He is the co-founder of the art collective Dadada Academy, based in Vienna and he was a resident of the Hooper Projects art residency, in Los Angeles, in 2015. His work was presented in the 4th Athens Biennale, in 2013, and has participated in international solo and group shows, often being featured in Vienna, Athens, Paris, Berlin, New York, Leipzig and Cologne.

Panos Papadopoulos’ work is a mixture of conceptual, minimal, abstract and expressionist art. Departing from his earlier works – text-populated, noisy, post punk abstract oil paintings – the artist allows space to emerge, creating interiors and replacing the text with objects. Yet, the objects still hold on to their linguistic potency, often acting as symbols of language. It is the empty space, the sound of silence that adds tension to these objects. In his tightly structured compositions, he turns drawings into paintings, leaving the viewer with the impression of the absent, the incomplete, the unfinished. And wondering : is their appearance deceiving; is there more than meets the eye?

Born in 1970 in Duffel (BE)Lives and works in Antwerp (BE)

Belgian artist Roeland Tweelinckx creates objects and site-specific interventions in autonomous gallery spaces or public places.

In his interventions, in which he utilises everyday materials and often duplicates reality, he subtly plays with his surroundings and our powers of perception. His work draws on trompe l’oeil references – it subverts the ordinary with discreet but precise visual and conceptual twists, creating a slight sense of confusion in the audience, while at the same time inviting a more focused look at reality.

BERNARD VILLERS

Born in 1939 in Brussels (BE) Lives and works in Brussels (BE)

Bernard Villers works and lives in Brussels. His painting plays with space, plays with inner and outdoor space. Of minimalist appearance – simple ideas, elementary forms, modest constructions, sober aspects – Bernard Villers’s work is of a very sensitive and cultivated complexity. First cultivated, because it has been made more or less invisible thanks to a dialogue with the language, with literature, with philosophy… ; Secondly sensitive, because looking for inspiration in diverse banal aspects, marginal or imperceptible of everyday experiences. Colour is the centre of his statements: with the surroundings and the induced effects, with the choice of the medium and the forms that characterized it.

Bernard Villers’s universe, if made of forms and colours, is filled with passions for other forms of art and concerns itself with the present that nestle in the crevices of the gaze, in the small areas of undefined thought. Indeed, painter but also book publisher, he involves in his creative process paper, folding as a plastic operation, writing as the object of a game, literature as an interlocutor and philosophy as an inspiration.

Born in 1977 in Zawiercie (PO) Lives and works in Bruxelles (BE) The essence of her playing with sculpture is recycling. She hardly ever buy things. And if she does – these are just elements indispensable for construction. She just plays with blocks. And the blocks she plays with might be plastic water bottles – thousands of which are used every day… Pieces of wood – industrial waste disposed of by companies… Old, used and worn-out mattresses. There are so many objects around. They surround her on all sides driving her to distraction and confusing to such an extent that she totally lost interest in quest of different material, no matter how sophisticated and luring they might be. She is a “junk” collector. She watches her collection without any concept or plan. Being deprived of imagination she starts to join those elements, bind them together - out of sheer curiosity. Sometimes the structure formed in this way grows powerful, becomes beyond her, overawes her… She likes it when those structures become strong and independent. They become themselves. In fact there are plenty of things she could say – like how fascinated is she by the borderline between fine art and applied art – but what is simply the most important thing for her is everyone’s individual contact with works.
