Diploma in ACCOUNTING and BUSINESS

IntroductionThe part-time programme is designed for working adults who aspire to gain entry level employment in the accounting field. This programme

will assist graduates to acquire core accounting skills which will allow them to support the work of professional accountants. It suits those

working adults who do not have prior accounting education and training.

In addition, Diploma graduates will be able to study along the professional accounting routes including ACCA, HKIAAT, AIA and CIMA

professional accounting examinations and become professional accountants after successfully writing the relevant examinations.

Entry Requirement 1. Have gained in the HKCEE Grade E in 3 subjects, and Level 2 in Chinese Language and English Language*; or

2. Have gained in the HKDSE Level 2 in 5 subjects, including Chinese Language and English Language; or

3. Have successfully completed the Project Yi Jin; or

4. Be aged at least 18 with one year’s relevant work experience.

* With effect from 2007, HKU SPACE recognises Grade E previously awarded for Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) (Grade C in the case of English Language (Syllabus A)) at HKCEE as an acceptable alternative to Level 2 in these two subjects at HKCEE.

* These optional modules will be offered one module each semester in order of their sequence, and subject to final confirmation of HKU SPACE. There is a

possibility that some optional modules may not be offered in any semester or semesters. Students will be given a tentative schedule indicating the availability of

the modules in advance of study.

The CurriculumThis part-time programme is offered on a modular system, consisting of accounting modules with a total of 360 contact hours. Students

are expected to enrol 2 modules per semester, and be eligible to graduate in about one year and eight months. The maximum duration

to complete the whole programme is 4 years. For students who have successfully completed the following accounting modules, an award

of Diploma in Accounting and Business will be conferred. An intermediate award of “Certificate in Accounting and Business” will be

conferred upon successful completion of the first 6 modules.

# Applicants with LCCI Level 2 Certificate in Accounting will be granted exemption from “Transaction Accounting”.

Professional Recognition 1. ACCA

Graduates of the Diploma in Accounting and Business will be exempted from up to 3 papers in the Professional Examinations of the

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Graduates are eligible for full exemption from the ACCA Foundations of

Accountancy (FIA). Graduates will be entitled for the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification if they register as a student of FIA,

complete the online module, ‘Foundations in Professionalism” and have one year’s relevant working experience.

Students with the Certificate in Accounting and Business awarded by HKU SPACE and passing one of the three examinations (Financial

Accounting, Management Accounting or Accountant in Business) of ACCA will be awarded “Diploma in Accounting and Business” by ACCA.

2. HKIAAT

Graduates of this Diploma Programme will be exempted up to 4 papers (P1, P3, P5 & P8) from the Accredited Accounting Technician

Examination of HKIAAT. Members of HKIAAT can register for the HKICPA’s Qualification Programme (QP) with conditions that they:

a) complete additional examinations with at least one year’s relevant work experience; or

b) complete programmes accredited by HKICPA

3. Two papers’ exemption from the CIMA Professional Examination.

4. Four papers’ exemption from The Assoication of International Accountants (AIA).

Programme Delivery Qualified and experienced teachers from HKU SPACE will teach modules face-to-face on weekday evenings and/or weekends. The academic

year is to be divided into 3 semesters (trimester): October to January (Semester 1), February to May (Semester 2) and June to September

(Semester 3).

Students can enrol in this programme in any semester subject to modules’ availability.

Articulation and Progression Routes Holders of Diploma in Accounting and Business are granted up to 3 modules’ exemption from the Advanced Diploma in Accounting

Programme and 4 modules’ exemption from the Professional Diploma for Accredited Accounting Technicians Programme of HKU SPACE.

Assessment Each module comprises 40 contact hours. Students are required to attend at least 80% of classes. Assessment of each module is based

on Continuous Assessment (assignments, mid-term examination etc.) and a Final Examination. The weighing of the overall assessment is:

Award of Diploma A student will be awarded the diploma provided that for each of the modules required he/she has

(a) Completed satisfactorily the required course assignments;

(b) Passed the relevant examination; and

(c) Maintained a Programme GPA of at least 1.0; and

(d) Satisfied the examiners with his/her attendance at lectures.

Award of Certificate An intermediate award of “Certificate in Accounting and Business” will be conferred upon successful completion of the first 6

modules in this Programme.

Course Fee The course fee for Level A and B modules is HK$3,650 per module which includes:

(1) Lectures;

(2) Marking of course assignments;

(3) Tests and examination.

The course fee for Level C modules is HK$4,150 per module which includes:

(1) Lectures;

(2) Marking of course assignments;

(3) Tests and examination.

Financial Accounting IThis Financial Accounting I Module develops knowledge and understanding of the techniques used in the collection and collation of information for the maintenance of accounts and financial records, with the aid of accounting software. At the completion of this module, students should be able to:

a. Describe the nature and purpose of accounting conventionsb. Prepare records relating to capital acquisition and disposal, income and expenditurec. Prepare trial balance and verify information for the completion of final accountsd. Illustrate how accounting software record business transactions and generate financial

reports

4. Cost Accounting IThe Cost Accounting I Module develops knowledge and understanding of the operation and maintenance of accounting systems for the capture, measurement and reporting of cost based information. At the completion of this module, students should be able to:

a. Describe costs by classification and purposeb. Prepare accounting transactions for material costs, labour costs, expensesc. Perform the calculation of cost of products and services using full cost absorption,

marginal and activity based methodsd. Explain the concepts of probability and computation of expected values e. Analyse and present standard cost reports

Financial Accounting IIThe Financial Accounting II Module develops knowledge and understanding of the application of techniques to prepare year-end financial statements, provide interpretation of financial statements for a range of organizations and give recommendation from the available information. At the completion of this module, students should be able to:

a. Describe the role and function of external financial reports and their principal usersb. Compile financial statements for limited companies, sole traders and partnershipsc. Evaluate the presentation of limited liabilities company’s income statement for

publication.d. Compare and contrast the form and content of financial statements for differing

6. Cost Accounting IIThe Cost Accounting II Module develops knowledge and understanding of the application of management accounting techniques to support the management processes of planning, control and decision-making. At the completion of this module, students should be able to:

a. Explain the use and limitation of accounting based management informationb. Generate forecasts of income and expenditurec. Generate draft budget proposals and prepare budget variance reports d. Analyze financial data for management control and decision making purposese. Formulate recommendations for cost reduction and value enhancement

7. Taxation The Taxation Module provides students with a general knowledge of the principles of taxation in Hong Kong SAR and develops their ability to interpret and apply the tax statutes to practical situations. At the completion of this module, students should be able to:

a. Describe the operation of the Hong Kong taxation system and the chargeability to Hong Kong income tax;

b. Compute property tax liabilities of owners of land/buildings situated in Hong Kong;c. Compute salaries tax liabilities of individuals, businesses of an individual, partnership

and corporation;d. Compute depreciation allowances and tax payable under personal assessment;e. Outlines the administration of taxes and general anti-tax avoidance provisions under the

Inland Revenue Ordinance.f. Illustrate the concept of tax planning.

8. Auditing Practice and ProcedureThe Audit Practice and Procedure Module develops knowledge and understanding of the audit process from the planning stage to the reporting stage, the techniques used in the conduct of internal and external audits and the value and controls of management information systems. At the completion of this module, students should be able to:

a. Outline the principles of auditing controlsb. Analyze audit risk and formulate appropriate audit procedures, draw valid

conclusions from the results of audit testsc. Describe the professional ethics for auditors and the corporate governance for

companiesd. Compile preliminary reports relating to an audit assignmente. Discuss the importance of information as a key resource to organization and its

9. Managing FinancesThe Managing Finances Module develops knowledge and understanding of optimizing the use of working capital and evaluation of capital expenditure projects. It also provides students with essential concepts in economics and statistics. At the completion of this module, students should be able to:

a. Describe sources of financeb. Explain cash management and proceduresc. Evaluate capital investment projectsd. Illustrate concepts in microeconomics and macroeconomicse. Apply basic statistical theories in practice.f. Analyze economic and financial data using basic statistical methods

10. Introduction to Hong Kong Business LawThis course introduces students to several areas of business law that are of relevance to accounting technicians. At the completion of this module, students should be able to:

a. Describe the legal system of Hong Kong and the legal knowledge which are relevant to the administration of business

b. Describe the legal mechanism and implications of multi-party business transactionsc. Analyse problems and issues in various business transactions and in proposing

appropriate solutions, having regard to relevant commercial and other considerations and applicable legal norms

d. Differentiate the ownership and governance structure of various types of businessese. Outline the purpose and use of bills of exchange and the duties and liabilities of the

parties concerned
