ROY KLAUS / CO-DIRECTOR

BY BRUCE WILLIAMSAs Jack and Jill are divvying up their

"'" books during a breakup in their up-and-down relationship, Jack makes the ob-servation, "I think you cannot feel anythingbut the extremes; you're incapable of themiddle ground:'

Therein lies the glaring roadblock to acomfortable, two-way relationship: no safe, acceptable middle ground. When thingsare great, they're wild, passionate, excit-ing, fantastic and worth overcoming anyobstacle for. When things are merely calmand ordinary, neither Jack nor Jill is satis-fied; the urge to make more of things, toalways be savoring those adrenaline highs, dooms their ability to co-exist and be realpartners. A pity.

Jane Martin's new play Jack and Jill ismaking its Southwest premiere with a lim-ited five-week run at Zachary Scott The-atre Center's Kleberg Stage in Austin. Likethe nursery rhyme duo whose names theprotagonists echo, Jack and Jill are tum-bling head-long into a tragedy in whichthey can't relate to each other. Neither willfully accept the other as is, or change verymuch; both are doomed to aloneness, since it's only in that state that they'll allowthemselves to feel comfortable and in con-trol. When the emptiness and wastefulnessof being alone finally sink in, it's too late.

Jack and Jill debuted at the 20th annualHumana Festival last year at Actors' The-atre of Louisville, where Martin is the resi-dent star. The secretive, pseudonymousMartin made her reputation with 1982'sTalking With, and has since written eightplays for ATL. The illusive playwright is amaster at twisting audiences' sympathieson potentially volatile subjects.

This time around, director Alice Wilsonand her ZACH team take on a story abouta roller-coaster relationship that could fea-ture any gender combination and still basi-cally ring true. For Jill, played by MeredithRobertson, it's a question of identity at the

PAGE 12

Fast-Paced'Jack and Jill'Scansthe Ups, Downs

of a Relationshipat Zachary Scott's

Kleberg Stage in Austinstart; for Marco Perella's Jack, it's a ques-tion of commitment. They're both basicallyopen and up-front in their arguments anddiscussions; unfortunately, they're alsoboth uncompromising, stuck in their ownways and unable to see the other's point ofview. Venus and Mars, for sure.

The play moves rapidly from Jack andJill's first meeting in a library to their firstdate, which includes a matter-of-fact dis-cussion of hygiene, condoms and oral sex.Courtship, living together, marriage, dis-pute and divorce rapidly follow. And that'sjust Act I; the second act revolves aroundfuture meetings and reminiscences, whenthe two wonder if they can - or should -give it another try.-

Meredith Robertson [I] and Marco Perella are the on-again, off-again couple in Jack and Jill.

Robertson and Perella both give superbperformances; they make you care abouttheir characters, remind you immediatelyof someone you've known or dealt with -or even a part of yourself that's beenthrough the same agonies and uncertain-ties. Unfortunately, the pacing here resem-bles that of a TV sitcom, with so manythings and feelings and so much real timecrammed into so few words, and so littletime to experience what's going on; theaudience can easily left dizzy by it all. Onecan enjoy the ride while exploring the

human heart through our two characters, but one never truly gets to savor or fullyunderstand them.

The set, designed by Christopher Mc-Collum, is simple yet versatile; it's basicallycomposed of a long table (usually with twochairs) that can be moved to a variety ofstage spots and become a headboard, adividing line, etc. Michael Raiford's cos-tume design is perfectly simple and real;the characters often make smooth cos-tume changes right on stage. This is effi-cient, though once in a while it detracts abit from a monologue.

There are a lot of funny lines in this dra-matic comedy; most go to Robertson, andthe talented actress smoothly brings themoff, from "You're so generous it's like watertorture" to "You're a good person in a badtux, Jack." She also gets to break a lot ofdishes in their first-act confrontation scene.Lucky girl, that looked like a lot of fun!

Poor Jack is always one step behindJill's feelings and wants, it seems, and hisattempts to catch up often prove to be thewrong steps. Perella is wonderful, center-ing his performance on the low-key task oftrying to follow his character's heart andmake everything right. He gets the worst of

it in most of the vignettes, with problemsbeing identified but rarely rectified.

"You have to handle loss," Jack rhap-sodizes at one point near the end of thenever-ending chase. "Any instant couldleave you alone ... so you have to protectsome part of yourself:' But their often de-pressing failure to connect and communi-cate leaves one wondering why Jack andJill bother, or else why they continue tohold back some part of themselves if theyreally want this pair thing to work.

Though the play ends with a hint of hope("Maybe ... "), you wonder if Jack and Jillhave really learned anything about them-selves and each other even after all they'vebeen through. Playwright Martin gives heraudiences a lot to think about and ponder. There's still that big hill to be climbed, andnot just by Jack and Jill.

Jack and Jill runs Thursday through Sun-day until May 31 at Zachary Scott TheatreCenter's Kleberg Stage, 1421 W. RiversideDr. in Austin. Performances are at 8 p.m.ThurSdays-Saturdays and at 2:30 p.m.Sundays. For tickets ($15-$20, with vari-ous discounts available) or more informa-tion, call (512)476-0541. ~

A 14-Year-OldGalveston Boy

Comes to Termswith Family and

Sexuality inBenjamin Taylor's

Debut Novel

Tales Out of SchoolTales Out of School; by Benjamin Taylor;Warner Books; memoir; trade paperback;1995/1997; 283 pp.; $12.99.

Ina Time magazine article recently, ajournalist pointed out that in today's

society, when we have so much less timeto read, it is ironic that there are so manymore good things out there clamoring to beread. This is even more true for the gay andlesbian community, as an explosion of newvoices have come forward to tell eloquent, even heartbreaking stories of youth, preju-dice and love. Benjamin Taylor's terrificdebut, Tales Out of School, first publishedtwo years ago and now out in paperbackfrom Warner Books, is a unique story thattransports the reader across continentsand decades by painting simple sepia-toned portraits of single moments that col-lect like your grandmother's tintypes.

For Texans, this book is an exceptionalwindow on the past. Set on GalvestonIsland at the turn of the last century, Talesis the story of the Mehmels, a family ofGerman Jews, and their descent fromwealth and esteem to the edge of marginalsociety at best. At the same time, it tells thestory of 14-year-old Felix Mehmel's awak-ening sexuality and self-awareness at thehands (and loins) of the local school bully. The contrast of Felix's acceptance of hisown individual nature against his family'srefusal to accept even simple reality is atragic theme explored in much recent gayliterature.

While set mostly in 1907, the novel eas-ily hopscotches back in time ten, even 40years to show a Galveston society thatencompassed many races and faiths due

to its nature as a seaport. For anyonewho's walked along the Strand, Tales Outof School is great in showing the charac-ters who must have lived there and thehard lives they led - a mulatto girl whosold spools for thread and cut profiles ofpeople out of construction paper, say, or amute Russian teacher who could be the

wandering prophet Elijah. Taylor's excep-tional descriptions allow the reader tosmell the pungent sea air softly mixing withsweet carolina jessamine. The detailedobservations of birds and island wildlife arerich and rewarding to the reader who takesthe time to savor them.

The characters who people Tales Out ofSchOol are a generous, diverse group.FeliX'Sovereducated but naive young teenis clearly isolated from his religious andethnic family. His grandfather lies bedrid-den, while his mother is balancing on a thinline of sanity; they're both mourning thetoss of Felix's father years earlier in theGreat Hurricane of 1900. As they isolatethemselves more and more, Felix comesout from behind his books at the beckoningof his former school tormentor; his initialsexual experience with Wick Frawley is abeautifully innocent portrait of budding lustand newfound liberation.

Other stories intermingle with those ofthe Mehmel family, most interesting that ofMiss Etta Murph and Velma Truly ("twowomen who had slept in one bed for 30years"). The matter-of-fact depiction of twolesbian characters in this long-past societyis a beautiful and loving rendering. Whocould have imagined a pair of women in1907, one a fisherwoman, the other a Latintutor, arguing about whether a mountedmoose head should be hung in the kitchen?

Taylor allows his tale to unfold like asummer breeze. It is neither hurried norunwelcome; it is calming and rewarding. He uses a lush vocabulary that isn't alien-ating in the way some period books canseem. In his obvious love for the scenery, his words sometimes approach a poetictone. In his descriptions of Hebrew loreand faith, a true sense of wonder, andsometimes despair, are clear, even over-whelming. The quiet climax of this book issimply a breaking of one's faith and areplacement of it with a more steady belief.

Ultimately, Tales Out of School is one ofthose books for which the plot or the desti-nation of the storyline is really irrelevant, because it's the trip you take along the waywhich is the reward. I am hard pressed tothink of an author who has had such warmfeelings for his flawed central charactersince John Berendt in Midnight in the Gar-den of Good and Evil. Tales will fit right inthe beach bag as you head down toGalveston this spring and summer. I can'tthink of a better way to while away an houron the sand than by reading of a young boyWho could have been sitting right whereyou are 90 years ago, trying to figure outWhat being gay even meant.

Benjamin Taylor is also the author of Intothe Open: Reflections on Genius andModernity. ...,

Pastor Leon Linfoot and his spousehave moved into the historical two-storyparsonage next door, which is also beingrefurbished by members of Grace Fellow-ship. Linfoot and his congregation stress, however, that it's not the new location andbeautiful church that they hope will attractpeople, it's what they have to offer.

CITY ELECTIONS SETTHIS SATURDAY IN

AUSTIN, SAN ANTONIOGayVotersMay Help Decide

SomeCloseRaces.

AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO - Mayoral andCity Council seats are the main prizes upfor grabs in a number of city electionsaround Texas this Saturday, May 3. Theelection campaigns have been noticeableprimarily for general disinterest, with feWblazing issues having come to the fore. Ifcandidates fail to capture a majority of thevotes, the top two in those races willsquare off again in June runoffs.

cus has been working strongly for the fourcandidates it endorsed in late March: KirkWatson for mayor, Gus Garcia for CityCouncil Place 2, Bobbie Enriquez forCouncil Place 5 and Willie Lewis for Coun-cil Place 6. Surveys showed Watson in avery close, expensive and heated battlewith current councilman Ronney Heynoldsthat seems destined for a runoff; there aresix other mayoral hopefuls, including for-mer councilman Max Nofziger, who maycut into the leaders' votes.

Garcia was the only ALGPC-endorsedcouncil candidate leading his race, but heis in a tough battle with Becky Motal, whohas received support from many conserva-tive groups. Garcia is the incumbent inPlace 2; two other candidates are in thePlace 2 race.

Anti-gay rhetoric has made news in boththe Place 5 and Place 6 City Council races. In the latter, incumbent Eric Mitchell waswidely blasted for calling people he didn'tlike "faggots," yet he still received the back-ing of Austin's major daily paper and has astrong lead over Lewis and openly gaycandidate Eric Samson. In the Place 5 con-test, Enriquez received some anonymoushate calls after accepting ALGPC'sendorsement; she is in a wide-open racewith Manuel Zuniga, Karen Hadden, BillSpelman and Gus Pena.

In San Antonio, the San Antonio EqualRights Political Caucus endorsed MayorBill Thornton for reelection, and also gaveits support to nine candidates for the tenCity Council seats, including dual endorse-ments in a pair of races (no endorsementswere made for three seats).

Thornton has gone out of his way tobecome a friend of the gay community, pushing fairness and being the first sittingmayor to attend a Human Rights Cam-paign Black Tie Dinner. He has taken heatfrom radical right groups for his evenhand-edness, and has been hurt in a messycampaign by tough rivals and by his accu-sation that a former campaign aide was~talking him. HOUSTON CHAPTER OFNAT'L LESBIAN GROUPSCHEDULESBRUNCH

Tori Osborneto SpeakatUncommonLegacyEventJune 29.

HOUSTON - The Houston Chapter ofAn Uncommon Legacy Foundation, Inc.,has announced plans for its second annu-al brunch. Tori Osborne, activist and authorof Coming Home to America, is scheduledas the guest speaker for the June 29 event.

An Uncommon Legacy Foundation isdedicated to promoting the cultural, eco-nomic and educational advancement oflesbians today and in the future. Last sum-mer, the Houston Chapter held its firstannual brunch, which featured author RitaMae Brown as guest speaker. That eventwas attended by more than 250 guestsand donated over $16,000, of which$8,000 was distributed locally.

Janine Brunjes, a member of the group'snational board, is enthusiastic about thisyear's annual brunch. "We're really inter-ested in giving women a chance to investin their community's future through charita-ble giving that is focused," Brunjes said in astatement released April 21. "I've foundthat women want to give and be involved, but that they just aren't sure how to do it.Legacy provides that avenue in a very pos-itive and productive way. This year we areworking to plan more events that are fun."

In January, An Uncommon LegacyFoundation, Inc. hosted its first Houston-area event of the year in conjunction withAssist Hers of Houston - a dinner thatnetted over $3,000, distributed entirely tolocal causes. Plans are also in the worksfor a golf tournament in September.

Brunjes said that Legacy has distributedmore than $240,000 in grants and scholar-ships to women since its inception in 1990.For more information about An UncommonLegacy Foundation, Inc., contact Brunjesin Houston at (713)520-1142, or write toAn Uncommon Legacy Foundation, Inc.;150 W. 26th St.; New York, NY 10001.
