Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

By now, I am sure that many of you have heard that our Archdiocese has lost a shepherd. Archbishop Harry J. Flynn, who led our Archdiocese from 1995-

2008, died last Sunday evening, September 22, 2019, after a battle with bone cancer. Though he retired in 2008, he was still very active in the Archdio-cese presiding at Confirmation Masses, giving talks, and serving where he could, until his illness made him no longer able to be as involved. Archbishop Flynn was the one who ordained me in 2005. I remember how, the morning before my ordination, my class was invited to the Chancery for a special Mass in which he blessed our chalices. I was unable to attend that Mass, as I was picking up my mother from the airport. When Archbishop Flynn found this out, he made a special effort to reach out to me and invite me and my mother to a private breakfast on the Monday following my ordination. It was a unique time that we got to spend with the Archbishop that my mother and I still remember quite fondly. For many people, they can recall a moment when Archbishop Flynn made them feel very special.

The Office of Readings, which is a pair of readings that priests and religious are obligated to pray as part of the Liturgy of the Hours, includes a reading from Holy Scripture as well as a reading from the Church Fathers or Church documents. In recent days, the second reading has focused on exhorting pastors to be good and faithful shepherds of the flock entrusted to them. A good pastor is meant to be a holy example to the flock, who “seeks the straying sheep every-where, strengthens the weak, heals the sick, and bind sup the injured. They may not know one anoth-er, but [the shepherd] knows all of them because he reaches out to all his sheep”. Archbishop Flynn had a way of doing that by making people comfortable. He fostered relationships, and in so doing, he invited them into relationship with Jesus Christ.

The public is invited to pray for the repose of Archbishop Flynn’s soul at a number of public visita-tions, followed by a Funeral Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Paul in St. Paul. The arrangements are as follows:

Sunday, September 29: Saint Mary’s Chapel, Saint Paul Seminary, 2260 Summit Ave., St. Paul, MN ¨ 5:30 pm – Reception of the body ¨ 6:00 pm – Evening Prayer ¨ 6:30 pm-7:00 am – Public Visitation & Vigil for the

Deceased

Classes for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

(RCIA) are starting this October!

Who is RCIA for?

¨ A baptized Catholic who has not received First Commun-

ion or Confirmation

¨ A baptized non-Catholic who is interested in becoming

Catholic

¨ A non-baptized person who is interested in becoming

Catholic

RCIA is the process by which these individuals prepare to re-

ceive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, First Communion,

Confirmation). Through a series of classes and discussions

covering all aspects of the Catholic faith, individuals and their

sponsors come to a greater appreciation and understanding of

the Church and commit themselves to continuing to deepen

their faith.

An inquiry session is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24 at

6:30 pm at the Parish Center for all those interested. At that

meeting we will describe the RCIA process, discuss the sylla-

bus and schedule of classes, and answer any questions. If you

are interested in RCIA but unable to attend on September 24,

please feel free to contact Fr. Shofner at 507-665-3811 or

email at [email protected].

Monday, September 30: Saint Mary’s Chapel, Saint Paul Seminary, 2260 Summit Ave., St. Paul, MN

¨ 7:00 am – Morning Prayer

¨ 7:30 am – Transfer of the body to the Cathedral of Saint Paul

Monday, September 30: Cathedral of Saint Paul, 239 Selby Ave., St. Paul, MN

¨ 8:00 am-11:00 am – Public Visitation

¨ 11:00 am – Mass of Christian Burial

¨ Following Mass – Immediate transfer of body to Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, MN – Rite of Committal and Burial

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
