Introduction

When plans started in autumn 2019 we had no idea of lockdown and the devastating effects

Covid- 19 would have on the world. The decision to move online was taken after Kathryn had a sudden brainstorm in March- and the result is what you are about to experience in the coming days! Moving online has proved to be a popular decision, and in total, with the junior academy pianists included, we have over 280 participants enrolled. We have been deeply touched and moved by the commitment to the course shown by our extraordinary faculty of over sixty world class pianist-teachers. They really have shown exceptional generosity and goodwill in offering to teach from their homes online. This means that the ‘Chetham’s piano experience’ – though unquestionably rather different in 2020- remains as vibrant, enriching, varied and inspirational as ever.

Indeed the sum of our online course is much bigger than the individual parts and constitutes an extraordinary fusion of inspiration and creativity for pianists and lovers of the piano of all ages and at all stages of their lives.

What the participants and faculty on the summer school created in Manchester each August for the past nineteen years was a unique, positive and all-encompassing international community of friendliness, support, positivity and inspiration. We are absolutely determined to make the course in 2020 as memorable, fun loving and helpful as always.

Ok, things may not be absolutely the same- but we are still part of one of the largest gatherings of piano lovers in Europe this summer. In celebration of friendship, camaraderie and community, we are coming together for online coffee mornings to take stock and look forward to events to come each day.

Additionally we will have several visits to the Chetham’s online bar in evenings for a chance to socialise and chat together. And the Cabaret- that wonderful summer school grand event- is firmly in place. Do come along to everything if possible, and do present your ‘party piece’ at the Cabaret- everyone is most welcome. At the end of Part one and Part two we have final participants’ concerts where there are opportunities to perform in a supportive, encouraging online environment.

In addition to daily technical resources and films, we have some exceptionally touching and memorable concerts from past summer schools to enjoy watching in the evenings as well as workshops and talks. It all adds up to an energising, inspirational and supportive programme of events for pianofiles of every description.

There are many individuals and organisations to whom we are indebted. Huge thanks to Forsyth’s Music Shop for not only providing their wonderful premises as a fabulous location for filming the technique films in, but also for offering all participants on the course substantial discounts on their products. We are indebted to Ben Sharpe of Mill Media for support in creating and editing the films, and to Nicole Wilson of Musical Orbit for support with the webinars.

Above all we are especially grateful to Lesley Martin for initially creating and then continuing to control-refine and coordinate the computer programme that empowers the extremely complex timetable and organisation of the summer school’s schedules. In 2020 Lesley has had an incredible amount of extra work and re-thinking to do. She is an exceptional person and truly the backbone of the administration. Without Lesley we simply would not be able to have a summer school.

Have a wonderful inspirational and enriching online experience!

• A unique performance of the complete Skazki by Nikolai Medtner, recorded for the 2020 piano summer school by Dina Parakhina, her assistant Dinara Klinton and Dina’s students from the Royal College of Music. We are indebted to Dina Parakhina for embarking on this incredible journey.

‘The generic title, Skazki, which Medtner adopted early in his career, seems to indicate nothing more specific than a narrative element that is shared by Chopin’s Ballades and Dvo"ák’s Legends. Their emotional sweep and expressive range is broad and their external motivation, where the composer discloses it, comes from such diverse sources as Pushkin, Shakespeare or nature, as well as from Russian folklore.

There is more incident, more concentrated thought and feeling and sheer stature here than can be found in many a sonata or symphony. There is not one Tale that is without merit, and several that can rightfully claim consideration as masterpieces.’ Hamish Milne

‘John McLeod is a very singular composer, his music unlike anyone else’s. Although it can also be extremely sensual, McLeod’s music often seems granite-like, boldly coloured, charged with a sometimes savage energy, and somehow thoroughly Nordic.’ Stephen Pettitt (Music Critic, The Sunday Times) The award of the CBE in the Queen’s birthday honours in 2016 and an Honorary Doctorate in Music from the University of Aberdeen in 2019 has added to his growing reputation as one of this country’s leading composers. www.johnmcleod.uk.com

His prize-winning performances at the British Liszt Competition in London in 1976, the Bartók-Liszt Piano Competition in Budapest in the same year, and the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1981 helped build a major career in the UK and Europe. Then his activity in the competitive world culminated in the

International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1982, which shot his name into world-wide prominence. In June 2011 he returned to Moscow as a jury member for the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition. Peter Donohoe was awarded a C.B.E. for services to music in the 2010 New Year’s Honours List.
