I am thrilled to offer heartfelt greetings to the Rutgers University–Camden Class of 2022!

As I approach the conclusion of my first year as your chancellor, I am deeply honored and touched to be welcoming you to the first traditional, in-person commencement ceremony held for Rutgers–Camden graduates since 2019. You all have endured and managed to excel in extraordinary times—a pandemic that we have learned recently has taken one million lives in this country and an estimated 15 million lives worldwide. As a precaution to prevent the spread of COVID-19, all of you had to study remotely for at least part of your college careers, foregoing many in-person experiences that are the trademarks of our close-knit campus community, which is filled with tremendous camaraderie among students, faculty, and staff.

Through it all, however, you persevered, managing not simply to get by, but to earn your diplomas with dignity and grace. You are to be commended for your commitment to finishing your degrees. As you go forth in your lives and into what I am sure will be exceptional careers, I hope you will remember this period as one that challenged you greatly—and you overcame that challenge. You have shown that obstacles cannot stand in your way, and that you can find success in the most difficult of circumstances.

It is our expectation that as you go forth with a world-class Rutgers degree, you will stay connected to your alma mater. Rutgers–Camden is proud of our more than 55,000 alumni—which, with this graduating class, will grow to more than 57,000. Nikole Hannah-JonesNikole Hannah-Jones, the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of The New York Times Magazine’s “1619 Project,” has spent her career investigating racial inequality and injustice. She has spent years chronicling the way official policy has created—and maintains—racial segregation in housing and schools. Her deeply personal reports on the Black experience in America offer a compelling case for greater equity.

In addition to a Pulitzer, her work has earned her the MacArthur Fellowship, known as the “Genius Grant,” a George Foster Peabody Award, two George Polk Awards, and three National Magazine Awards. Named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, Hannah-Jones serves as the Knight Chair of Race and Journalism at Howard University, where she is founding the Center for Journalism and Democracy.

She also is editor of The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story, a New York Times bestselling book that includes essays exploring the legacy of slavery in present-day America, as well as poems and works of fiction illuminating key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance. Library Journal said, “this invaluable book sets itself apart by reframing readers’ understanding of U.S. history, past and present.” In a starred review, Booklist wrote, “This visionary, meticulously produced, profound, and bedrock-shifting testament belongs in every library and on every reading list…[An] invaluable and galvanizing history . . . revelatory.” It has been selected as one of Amazon’s best history books of the year and has been adapted into a graphic novel and four publications for young readers. In 2016, Hannah-Jones co-founded the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting, which seeks to increase the number of reporters and editors of color. She earned the 2018 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism and was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists and the Newswomen’s Club of New York. In 2020, she was inducted into the Society of American Historians, and in 2021 she was named a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

She holds a M.A. in mass communication from the University of North Carolina and a B.A. in history and African-American studies from the University of Notre Dame.

The Honorable Judith M. PersichilliJudith M. Persichilli—a Rutgers University bachelor of science in nursing alumna who earned her degree with summa cum laude honors—is the first registered nurse to serve as commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health. She began serving as the acting commissioner of the Department of Health in August 2019, and in January 2020 the State Senate confirmed her as commissioner. She has worked alongside Gov. Phil Murphy helping to lead the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a once-in-a-century health emergency. Under her leadership, the Department of Health works to protect and improve the health of all New Jersey residents. The department’s priorities include reducing health disparities, improving maternal health, addressing the overdose epidemic, and increasing access to health care.

Prior to being named commissioner, Persichilli compiled vast experience leading hospitals across New Jersey. Her roles included serving as acting CEO of University Hospital in Newark, president and CEO of Catholic Health East, and CEO of St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton. She also cofounded the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia, which provides fundraising support to organizations throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.

She has earned many awards and recognition for her work, including induction into the New Jersey State Nurses Association Hall of Honor in 2006. She also received the 2008 Catholic Charities Richard J. Hughes Humanitarian Award, the Diocese of Trenton’s highest honor, and the Benemerenti Medal, a papal honor bestowed by Pope Benedict XVI. In 2011, Persichilli was named one of the 50 most powerful people in New Jersey health care by NJ Biz and was selected by KYW Newsradio as a recipient of its annual Women’s Achievement Award.

In addition to her Rutgers degree, Persichilli earned a nursing diploma from the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, and a master of arts in administration with summa cum laude honors from Rider University.

The Honorable Stuart RabnerNew Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner is the eighth chief justice to lead the New Jersey Supreme Court since the adoption of the current state constitution in 1947.

Chief Justice Rabner was nominated to be chief justice of the Supreme Court by Gov. Jon S. Corzine in 2007, and he was nominated for tenure by Gov. Chris Christie in 2014.

Born in 1960, Chief Justice Rabner was raised in Passaic, New Jersey. He graduated summa cum laude from the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1982. He graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1985. He was a law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Dickinson R. Debevoise before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office in Newark in 1986.

After beginning his career as an assistant U.S. attorney, Chief Justice Rabner worked in a number of positions, including first assistant U.S. attorney and chief of the terrorism unit. He was chief of the office's criminal division when he was named chief counsel to Gov. Corzine in January 2006. He was named New Jersey attorney general in September 2006 and served in that position until his nomination to the state Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Rabner is a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Judicial Administration at New York University School of Law, and a member of the Council of the American Law Institute. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Conference of Chief Justices from 2010 to 2012.

Toni PergolinToni Pergolin has served as president and CEO of Bancroft, a leading regional nonprofit, for more than 15 years. Under her leadership, Bancroft has expanded its services to include extensive programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, and those in need of neurological rehabilitation.

Prior to joining Bancroft, she worked at the University of Pennsylvania Health System for 14 years in various positions, including chief financial officer for Pennsylvania Hospital.

Pergolin is actively involved in community activities and welcomes opportunities to help others with important missions. She has extensive board experience, serving on the boards of seven organizations—both public and nonprofit—over the past decade. Currently, she is chair of the Peirce College Board of Trustees and serves on the boards of Fulton Bank, N.A., and Inspira Health. She also is a member of the Rutgers School of Business–Camden Dean’s Leadership Council.

Her book, Too Important to Fail: Leadership Lessons for Nonprofits, was published in 2020. It describes her extraordinary story of taking Bancroft from operating on the edge of bankruptcy to doubling its size and building a state-of-the-art campus for those Bancroft serves today and in the future.

She was selected as one of the 50 most influential people in South Jersey by South Jersey Biz in 2015, won the SmartCEO Cornerstone Award in 2015, was among The Who’s Who in Healthcare in South Jersey in 2017, and was selected for SJ Magazine’s Women of Excellence in 2019.

She holds an undergraduate degree in accounting from The Pennsylvania State University and her master’s in health administration from Saint Joseph’s University

The wearing of the academic dress dates back to the early days of the oldest universities in the world. In the American Council on Education’s book titled American Universities and Colleges, it is suggested the “Gowns may have been counted necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head...”

Throughout the years, European universities have continued to show great diversity in their academic dress. American universities, on the other hand, when they decided to adopt academic dress, immediately established a code of regulations which today is followed by almost all American institutions. The establishment of this code has made it possible to distinguish the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees and at the same time recognize the university which has given them the degree.

Gowns: Bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. Master’s gown, worn open or closed, has oblong sleeves, the front part of which frequently is cut away at the elbow. Doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. It is worn open or closed. Cotton, poplin, or similar material is used for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and rayon or silk ribbed material is used for the doctor’s degree.

Hoods: The hoods vary in sizes: 48 inches for the doctor’s degree, 42 inches for the master’s, and 36 inches for the bachelor’s. All hoods are lined in silk in the academic color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. If the institution has more than one color, the colors are shown in divisions using chevrons. The binding or edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in the color designating the subject in which the degree was granted.

Below is a list of some of the faculty colors as prescribed by the Intercollegiate Code for the binding of the hood.

THE ACADEMIC COSTUME

The color or colors of the lining of the hood for the nine colonial colleges are: scarlet, Rutgers; crimson, Harvard; green-gold-silver, William and Mary; blue, Yale; red-blue, Pennsylvania; orange-black, Princeton; light blue-white, Columbia; brown, Brown; and green-white, Dartmouth.

Caps: Black mortarboards or soft hats are worn for all degrees. The gold tassel signifies a doctorate.

The Rutgers shield is a fundamental expression of the university’s identity. Introduced in celebration of Rutgers’ 250th anniversary in 2016, the new shield—a simplified interpretation of its 1966 Rutgers bicentennial predecessor—honors our roots and affirms our values, while providing greater flexibility when used as 21st-century iconography in pageantry, publishing, and promotion.

The shield’s elements convey where we have been and who we are now. The shield is divided into thirds, representing Rutgers’ deep connections to New Jersey’s three regions—north, central, and south—and denoting the university’s tripartite mission—teaching, research, and service.

Five symbolic elements both acknowledge our past and signify that as we evolve, we will uphold core values that have been integral to our identity from our earliest days.

The sunburst conveys illumination—light as metaphor for knowledge—and it is the motif of our seal and the heart of our motto, “Sun of righteousness, shine upon the West also.” Our centuries-old seal and motto are both variants on those of Utrecht University, the Netherlands; its motto reads, “Sun of righteousness, enlighten us.”

The crown represents our founding in 1766 as Queen’s College, named in honor of Queen Charlotte, wife of Great Britain’s King George III who reigned over the American colonies when our charter was signed. Queen Charlotte is an apt early namesake: current scholarship finds she cared deeply for education, and, against convention, ensured that her six daughters were educated as well as her nine sons. Inclusion and equality are Rutgers hallmarks.

The date 1766 connotes our founding and confirms our standing as one of America’s nine original colonial colleges. A decade later, as the American Revolution erupted, the college gave itself over to the cause of freedom, as all “who were able to bear arms immediately marched to oppose the enemy.”

The three stars represent the State of New Jersey, the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

The book is a timeless symbol of our enduring commitment to teaching, learning, academic inquiry, and scholarship. Across generations and disciplines, at our core, we create, share, and apply knowledge for the enrichment of individuals and the betterment of the broader society.
