It’s November, and for us at Gear Solutions, it can only mean one thing: our annual Buyer’s Guide is here.
Each November, Gear Solutions magazine publishes comprehensive company listings as a resource to the gear manufacturing industry. Make sure you keep this special issue close throughout 2021 as your go-to guide for companies offering machines, tooling, and services.
We work hard to maintain this constantly changing list each year, adding contacts we’ve made through industry events, advertising, and editorial submissions. These con-nections are important to us — whether it’s through advertising or articles that highlight the latest technology, processes, applications, and products.
A unique company profile kicks off each section. Take some time to acquaint yourself with the knowledge and experience each company brings to the table when it comes to machines, tooling, and services.
Following our three main features and the section directories, you’ll find summaries of profiles from past issues with a reference to where you’ll find their contact informa-tion in our Buyer’s Guide listings. If what you read whets your appetite, you can find the companies’ complete profiles at gearsolutions.com/category/company-profile.
Also, take note that we’ve given special attention to the companies that have a com-munity storefront on our website. If you’d like to know more about those companies, head to the gearsolutions.com community page.
I hope you find the articles interesting and informative and see our Buyer’s Guide for the useful resource we intended it to be in order to help you with your purchasing decisions.
And if your company isn’t listed, send me an email at [email protected] with your information and category, and we will make sure you get added.
As always, thanks for reading and letting us be a valuable source for you and the rest of the gear industry!

For the past 80 years, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machine Tool has supplied gear-hobbing machines, gear-shaping machines, gear-shaving machines, gear chamfer/deburr equipment, gear-skiving machines, gear grinders, and more to a wide variety of industries.By KENNETH CARTER, Gear Solutions editor
With its massive customer base, it’s not unusual for one to contact Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machine Tool with an immediate machine need, a need that the company is able to meet
time after time.“An existing customer will call and say, ‘Hey, have
you still got that GD-30 in stock?’ Yeah. ‘Ship it to me next week.’ That kind of occurrence is very frequent,” said Tom Kelly, senior vice president at MHI Machine Tool. “We could have seen the guy three weeks ago, and he wasn’t in the market for anything. Things change so quickly. We have to be able to adapt and be able to respond quickly.”
That kind of adaptability is essential with the diverse lineup of products MHI Machine Tool offers globally, according to Kelly.

EXTENSIVE PRODUCT LINEMHI Machine Tool builds gear-hobbing machines, gear-shaping machines, gear-shaving machines, gear cham-fer/deburr equipment, gear-skiving machines, and gear grinders (both form and generating). The company also builds a full complement of cutting tools for these machines. All of these products are built at MHI’s factory in Ritto, Shiga prefecture Japan. Additionally, Federal Broach Holdings, LLC, a MHI Group Company, builds a wide variety of broaching machines and cutting tools often used in high-production gear work. Federal also sells and services MHI gear cutting tools.
“We’ve got hundreds of customers,” Kelly said. “We’re the king of the job shops. One of the main reasons why we get so much of that job shop business is because these small first-tier, second-tier-type suppliers, they get a job, and all of a sudden, they need a machine, and they need a machine tomorrow. I know some of our competitors may have a stock machine or two in their inventory, but we normally stock 15 to 20, so we’re able to make quick deliveries and occasionally in turnkey packages. A lot of times being able to project who we’re going to sell to just comes out of the blue.”
‘MOTHER MACHINES’MHI Machine tool has a long history as the machine tool supplier to other divisions of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and as such, offers a wide variety of products, according to Kelly, which is the reason the company considers itself
the maker of “mother machines.”“Most of the other divisions need to have fabrications
such as machines or gearboxes built,” he said. “Basically, we make the machines that make other machines. It’s like a mother giving birth to others. It’s translated from Japanese to English, but the company has used that ter-minology for years.”
As a producer of both machine tools and cutting tools, MHI Machine Tool is continuously challenged with each product line to build products with increased productiv-ity and accuracy, according to Kelly.
“For example, we have a small customer base who builds small module strain wave gears and other pre-cision reduction gears for robots,” he said. “Given the increased demand in this market, we have recently developed the ‘FR Series’ of gear-hobbing and shaping machines.”
TURNKEY DEVELOPMENTKelly emphasized that turnkey development of new prod-ucts is a cornerstone of MHI Machine Tool’s philosophy of focusing on the future while being attentive to its customers’ needs and industry trends.
“If somebody has an idea, and they want to develop a new technology, the first thing that upper management is going to ask is, ‘How many of these machines are you going to sell? When are we going to get a return on our investment?’” he said. “That’s always on the business end of things. We do have customers that we are very, very

close to. For instance, what put us on the map in a seri-ous way was developing automotive production-type gear grinders 15-20 years ago.”
A large Japanese manufacture that was very limited in getting gear grinders quickly from one of its suppliers came to MHI wanting to develop a new production gear grinder, according to Kelly.
“At that point in time, it made sense,” he said. “We’ve built hundreds of machines since then, and they’re get-ting pretty well-respected out there in the industry now, where, 20 years ago, we didn’t really have much that you’d be able to pay too much attention to.”
EVOLVING TECHNOLOGYMHI Machine Tool’s product lines have evolved over the years, according to Kelly.
“In the past, we, just like everybody else, had a hon-ing machine,” he said. “We decided we weren’t moving enough honing machines, and so we let the other guys fill that market. Long ago, we quit making turning machines. We quit making commodity-type machin-ing centers, verticals and horizontals. We’ve stuck with the larger platform products, large boring mills, gantry mills, and portal mills. We do have tiny mills — very, very high speed, micro machine-type platforms for machin-ing carbide, and electrodes, and probes and other similar products. We’ve targeted niche high-value markets.”
During Kelly’s time at MHI, MHI was the first com-pany to introduce a CNC gear shaper in the mid-1990s that used CNC controls to generate helical gears rather than the traditional fixed lead guide.
With automotive production ramping up worldwide then, gear-hobbing machine manufacturers were build-ing high-speed machines capable of dry cutting using carbide hob cutters, tools that were extremely expensive
and easily damaged.“In 1996-97, MHI broke all of the traditional rules and
introduced a high-speed steel hob cutter with our pro-prietary ‘SuperDry’ coating capable of cutting without coolant and with productivity similar to that of carbide,” he said.
MHI Machine Tool first started with the production of
lathes in 1939. Since then, the company’s products have been
used to produce other divisions’ (and outside customers’) products.

MEETING CUSTOMERS’ CHALLENGESMHI Machine Tool’s engineering teams often meet with customers to review and discuss manufacturing chal-lenges, according to Kelly. With a broad base of knowl-edge and experience working with customers worldwide, some challenges are easily overcome using technology that already exists. Other times, newly designed process-es and equipment may be required.
In 1995, Kelly challenged MHI’s engineers to look at automotive pinion gear production in order to design a combined machine that would be more productive than any gear cell known at the time. The company looked at the process of hob-chamfer/deburr-finish roll that was traditionally done on three separate machines. The result was an inline transfer machine called the GT06R that produced a pinion every 10 seconds.
That ingenuity is a testament to the huge library of machines MHI Machine Tool has designed and built over the years, according to Kelly.
“As a result, some products will disappear pretty quickly; others are just such great machines that they run and run and run,” he said. “Every once in a while, we might do a design update on them, but they are just so reliable. When you have a general manager — who aggressively drives a business philosophy — they’ll bring guys in from other divisions, and they’ll take the helm for five or six years. We had this one manager in the ’90s, and he pushed the design teams and had them working around the clock, building new things. The GTO6R gear center from concept to final build was less than a year. I traveled to Japan three different times to meet with the design team on that. We had it on the floor at IMTS. Everybody’s head was just spinning after that. Things like that can happen.”
AN IMPORTANT PART OF A LARGER WHOLEMHI Machine Tool is part of the larger conglomerate of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group (MHI), which is involved in a wide variety of industries that includes energy, aircraft, space, ship and ocean, transportation, material handling, environment, automotive, industrial machinery, infrastructure, living and leisure, defense, and engineering. MHI Machine Tool first started with the production of lathes in 1939. Since then, the company’s products have been used to produce other divisions’ (and outside customers’) products. MHI has been present in the U.S. since the early 1970s and has supplied thousands of machining centers, large boring mills, gantry and por-tal style mills, cylindrical grinders, turning machines, and gear cutting machines.
In serving the industry, Kelly points out that MHI Machine Tool has a loyal customer base.
“We’ve developed, particularly here in North America, a reputation of legendary reliability,” he said. “That’s one of our key phrases. We use it in our advertising a lot, and that’s not just for the machine tools that tend to run and run and run. We have customers say, ‘We’ve had this machine in here for 12 years, and we haven’t had a single service call on it yet.’ If we have a minor error come up on CNC control, you just give the service department a call, and it’s fixed five minutes later. We really pride ourselves on being quickly responsive.”
EMERGING TECHNOLOGIESAs MHI Machine Tool continues to serve its customers with a finger on the pulse of innovative developments, Kelly said the company is looking at emerging technolo-gies such as additive manufacturing.
“Additive manufacturing may become feasible for high production in the future, so MHI has been work-ing to perfect our Directed Energy Deposition AM System (LAMDA Series),” he said. “With access to joint research with other MHI group companies, we will keep our eyes open and try to stay ahead of industry needs.”
And some other new products manufactured by MHI Machine Tool aren’t marketed in North America, but are available in the Japanese market, according to Kelly.
Other technologies, such as factory automation and the making of gas turbines, continue to push MHI Machine Tool forward.
“We build laser welding equipment, and manufacture linear and rotary glass scales,” he said. “We call them the Mitsubishi Precision Scales. We’ve also built large side-entry blade groove milling machines for big turbines. We’re tied closely to the Mitsubishi Power Systems.”
In addition to the company’s established collabora-tions, MHI Machine Tool also has worked with universities and various aircraft manufacturers in order to increase speed and precision with its products, according to Kelly.
“We can’t just rest upon our laurels,” he said. “We have to continuously look at the future and develop new products, kind of like this metal-printing machine, the direct energy deposition, additive manufacturing sys-tem. We’re looking at doing things like that. Of course, we’re trying to stay on top of the gear-processing equip-ment. We’re always trying to stay one step ahead and keep an eye on where the industry is going.”

Gear performance may sound like a simple concept at face value, but many variables can adversely affect a gear if not accounted for in the design stages. Many of those variables occur in the part’s
surface shape and surface texture. To interpret the details of a surface, it sometimes takes
a company that can look beyond the numbers and take it to the next level. Enter Digital Metrology Solutions, who has been up to this challenge for more than 20 years.
“Everything about gear performance is related to surfaces, and the shape of these surfaces: roughness, waviness, form,” said Mark Malburg, president of Digital Metrology Solutions. “It’s all related to surface geometry. For example, in today’s context, gear noise is in front of everybody’s mind. Cars go electric, and we can hear every-thing now. That is all hiding in the gear’s surface texture.”
PREDICTING GEAR NOISERecently, Malburg worked with Caterpillar to develop software to support their patented approach for predict-ing gear noise. The software embodies adaptive math-ematics for detecting the waves in a gear tooth, which are responsible for causing problems and noise.
Although Malburg’s experience with gears is exten-
sive, he points out that the gear industry is actually mov-ing slower than other industries when it comes to surface texture.
“In gears, we’ve generally seen people make surfaces smoother and smoother. In doing so, many have actually lost touch of some things like waviness,” he said. “Some of the highly polished gears I’m seeing, for example rac-ing gears, are striving for shiny. They’re not realizing that they look nice, and they may be inside the profile tol-erance, but there are waves that are being missed within the tolerance. Other industries have solved that or have addressed that and are already aware of that.”
In many ways, Malburg said Digital Metrology is build-ing toolboxes to lead the evolution of the gear industry.
“Some of the work we are doing in gear profile analysis is based on work that we’ve done in roller bearings many years ago, but it’s leading edge in gear analysis,” he said. “As the gear industry is evolving, Digital Metrology is stay-ing in front because of our work in other industries.”
SURFACE – NOT JUST A NUMBERMalburg considers it Digital Metrology’s mission to help people understand that a surface isn’t just a number.
“That’s been really key as any industry evolves,” he

said. “If you’re trying to improve a gear, or any other sur-face for that matter, it’s not just the roughness number that matters. It’s a shape we’re trying to deal with, and that shape has many aspects. Is it lumpy or fuzzy? Are there distinct peaks or bumps? These are aspects of a surface that are not easily captured in a single number. The understanding of surface shapes has been very, very key to any industry that has improved the performance of their surfaces. The cylinder bore of an engine has improved not because the roughness number has got-ten better. In fact, the roughness number hasn’t really changed over time. But the shape or ‘picture’ of the sur-face is very different now. Similarly, two gears may have the same roughness numbers but very different shapes and performances. And that’s where we’re learning. We are developing better tools to simulate things. There are new mathematics that simulate contact stress better. We can even build these analyses right into a shop-floor roughness gauge. Our tools are evolving, along with gear evolution. And, it’s great to connect the two.”
GETTING THE RAW DATAWhen it comes to analyzing and solving problems, data is the raw material.
“When Digital Metrology is called in, the first thing we will need is raw data from the surfaces,” he said. “We look at profiles in digital form and 3D surfaces in digital form. With customer’s measured data and Digital Metrology’s software, we can start manipulating the
surfaces and start finding surface features that relate to gear performance. A customer will approach me with, ‘These two parts are functioning differently. What’s dif-ferent about them? Or perhaps Supplier A and Supplier B both meet specs, but only Supplier A’s parts are working. What’s the difference, because they both meet the print? Or we’ve got a new failure. We’ve tried to get more perfor-mance out of a gear, and it’s fretting, spalling, vibrating, or wearing.’ People approach us with parts that have a performance issue that can’t be measured or an improve-ment that they want to be able to measure. It’s always a measurement challenge.”

As an example, Malburg brought up an early project with gears that were historically noisy.
“There was a notorious pickup truck engine. It was so noisy that when you went to a drive-through window, you had to turn off the engine to speak into the speaker. It wasn’t combustion noise; it was gear noise,” he said. “That problem went on for years. Looking at the gear tooth profiles, everything met print. The K-charts were good. The roughness was good, the pitch, everything was good. However, hiding inside the surface, were bumps in the waviness profile. In fact, the number of bumps, combined with the teeth, directly correlated to the frequency of the noise. Furthermore, the height of the bumps was directly related to the amount of noise being experienced in the field.”
SIMPLIFYING THE COMPLEXMalburg says one of his company’s strengths is taking complex ideas and making them conceptually easier to understand and apply to real world problems.
“For example, simulating how a gasket will seal a sur-face,” he said. “You’ve made a surface, and we want to know if it’ll seal without putting a gasket on it. We can do that with surface measurements, in real time, right on
the gauge. The same is true with the gear tooth; we can detect the critical bumps that are going to cause stress or noise. For Digital Metrology, as we are developing tools, the ‘win’ is where we can take something mathemati-cally difficult or complex and turn it into a tool that you, and perhaps even your kids, can understand. Sometimes when we solve customer problems, it requires some crazy mathematical concepts and perhaps some computing power. The ‘win’ is when we can break that concept down to a description that anyone can understand and anyone can use as part of their job in creating and controlling their surfaces.”
NECESSARY ROUGHNESSSome texture is typically required to carry lubrication on interfaces, according to Malburg.
“I see so many so-called ‘high-performance’ gears being made smoother and smoother. It is as if people are trying to say, ‘Let’s make them smooth because smooth looks sexy.’ Unfortunately, many of these surfaces do not last long. There’s no lubrication,” he said. “The idea today of making them shinier is dangerous.”
“We’ve got to work on pictures and shapes, not just the value of Ra (roughness average). Using Ra alone is like com-ing home from a concert and saying it was the best show you’ve ever been to because it was 105 decibels. Decibels describe a concert much like the Ra describes a surface,” he said. “We need reliable measurements and great soft-ware to extract and display what really matters.”
That ideology circles back to Malburg’s working theme of surface measurement.
“My world is not easily a world of numbers; it’s a world of shapes,” he said. “I usually start my train-ing with a 3D model of the Earth, and I say, ‘Can you describe this with a number?’ There is no single num-ber that describes the shape of the world. That is the same as the shape of a gear tooth.”

“We’ve got to work on pictures and shapes, not just the value of Ra (roughness average). We need reliable measurements and great software to extract and display what really matters.”

“I see gears moving a little bit more toward where bearings are going today. In the bearing industry, we see a lot of emphasis on surface stresses, lubrication, and noise,” he said. “I think the same general concerns are at play in the gear field. We need to understand and control surface contacts, stresses, and lubrication. We need to manage the balance between too rough and too smooth. There needs to be a keen awareness and diligent control of waviness. Smoother isn’t necessarily better.”
21 YEARS OF DIGITAL METROLOGY SOLUTIONSDigital Metrology Solutions has been helping companies solve problems related to surface shape and texture for 21 years.
“If you’ve read or listened to any of Start with Why by Simon Sinek, I found that fascinating because it really hit home with me,” he said. “My ‘why’ is to help people have light bulbs turn on. I enjoy teaching. I enjoy helping peo-ple learn. The software tools we develop enhance that. The tag line at digitalmetrology.com is ‘Understanding Beyond Measure.’ It’s all about helping people under-stand. That’s what everything we do is really about — whether it’s consulting, custom software, off-the-shelf software, or training. It’s helping people understand what they have and how they can make it better.”

By KENNETH CARTER, Gear Solutions editor
Often, the unsung backbone of the gear-manufac-turing world is the very tools used to make them.
In the case of Platinum Tooling, the compa-ny has been supplying a variety of tools used to
shape, not just the gear industry, but a multitude of industries across the globe.
Platinum Tooling serves the automotive, aerospace, medical, firearms, and energy markets, as well as many other industries in metalworking and has a network of sales representatives throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico to service OEMs, machine tool deal-ers, and industrial supply companies.
“For the gear manufacturing industry, a lot of gears are round, and they’re produced on lathes, and they have a lot of features that need to be machined on lathes, so our live tools are the product that we sell for gear manufacturers,” said Preben Hansen, president of Platinum Tooling.
“The turning is simple, but then gears will have fea-tures that need to be machined in them — holes that need to be drilled and tapped in it — and that’s the kind of work that we supply tools for, as well as hobbing tools. A lot of lathes these days have the capabilities of doing hobbing.”
TOOLINGPROFILE PLATINUM TOOLING
INNOVATIVE TOOLING TECHNOLOGYPlatinum Tooling serves many industries – including the gear industry – by providing its customers with a wide variety of tooling options ranging from a 40,000-piece established database to custom-designed options.

HEIMATEC TOOLSPlatinum Tooling has been in business for more than a decade and is the sole importer of live tools, angle heads, and multiple spindle tools manufactured by Heimatec GmbH, based in Renchen, Germany.
Heimatec offers one of the widest ranges of live tools in the industry and has more than 40,000 designs in its database. The company uses the highest quality gears that are ground and lapped in sets to allow for efficient torque transmission and minimal backlash. Heimatec live tools feature its patented u-tec changing system and heavy-duty bearings found throughout its product lines available with an external or internal coolant sup-ply. The u-tec changing system helps reduce inventory and changeover time, which can result in cost savings.
“I’ve been in machine tool accessories my whole life,” Hansen said. “And I got together with Heimatec, who would become a major source for tooling in this coun-try. I said, ‘We need to start a business over in the U.S. selling Heimatec product.’ And after a lot of negotiat-ing, we did. We started up a joint business partnership between myself and the manufacturer in Germany. And then, some years later, I figured out that really to move forward with the business, I needed to get independent.
So, I bought their share of the U.S. business, and we took over as Platinum Tooling about two years ago.”
MAKING LIVE TOOLSThat independence has sparked numerous develop-ments within Platinum Tooling’s history, including stocking live tools for just about any major lathe on the marketplace, according to Hansen.
“We have a couple of different styles, and we have a nice quick-change system,” he said. “There’s a gear company here in Illinois called Overton, and they make a lot of different gears there. They have a lot of families of parts, and they need to drill and tap holes in these families of parts. So, they use our tools for doing all of that, and they’re quick change, so for each part, they have inserts set up ready to go, so when they change over, they can quickly go to a different part number in that family and very quickly start manufacturing again.”
Platinum Tooling was also instrumental in the devel-opment of a tool for Milwaukee Electric, according to Hansen.
“In Milwaukee’s prototype development area, they needed to produce a lot of gears for a drill that had eight

little gears in it, so they came to us and said, ‘We need to cut all these gears. We have all these little different hobs with different diameters, and we need the flex-ibility of a tool that we can put on our Mazak machine and that we can put all these, six, seven different hob diameters on and produce gears here for the prototypes we’re building,’” he said. “We made them a tool for that. Now, they make the gears for all their prototype hand tools in Milwaukee Electric on a hobbing tool that we built them.”
CUSTOM-DESIGNED TOOLSPlatinum Tooling does a surprising amount of custom-designed tools, according to Hansen.
“That’s actually a pretty strong aspect of what we can do because we can build tools,” he said. “We’re very good at customs. We understand engineering; we
understand application. If I get a challenging applica-tion like that, I’ll get a hold of a customer, and, before (COVID), I’d go visit and sit down with them and go through the whole project, but now, we work more with solid models and engineering specs based on the customer’s requirements. We know how to tackle chal-lenging applications, and we know how to build special tools. They take a bit to do, but it usually works out pretty well. We’re a great engineering company.”
Hansen said his company may get a few requests a week for custom tools, adding that it can take about a month to create a tool that satisfies the customer’s needs.
“There’s a lot of custom applications,” he said. “It’s amazing what people think of.”
CUSTOMER SERVICEThat detailed customer service is a cornerstone of
Platinum Tooling’s core philosophy, according to Hansen.“When we started the business, we knew we weren’t
going to be the biggest or the cheapest in the market, but I said there’s one thing we can do better than any-body else, and that’s customer service,” he said. “And that’s what we did, and that’s why I think the business has grown. Every year we’ve grown substantially. And I think it’s because we give customer service that’s as good as anything on the market.”
That customer service has kept Platinum Tooling’s clientele coming back year after year, according to Hansen.
“In the last 10 years since we started this business, Heimatec business was zero in the United States when we took over,” he said. “I think I’m most proud of the loyalty that we have from our customers now. We have a customer base that does not look anywhere else for tools.
They come to us, and we can help them, and they know that, and so I am really happy with the customers that we have and the loyalty they’re showing to us because they know what we can do for them.”
MORE SOPHISTICATED PRODUCTSWhen it comes to the gear market, Hansen said the lathes in the market have become more sophisticated with each passing year.
“The lathes that we deal with are more sophisticated than ever, and so there’s more gear work being done on lathes as compared to gear machines because of the capabilities,” he said. “In particular, the controls had synchronized the turrets and the spindle. Our involvement has been with the development of new tools for the lathes that are getting better and more capable of cutting gears.”
As the needs of industry grow and evolve, Hansen said it will be necessary for his com-pany to continue growing more sophisticat-ed in order to compete on a worldwide basis.
“Machine tools are more capable than they ever were, and there’s more automa-tion being done,” he said. “I think that the
industry in general is moving toward more sophisti-cated automation types of setups. And we have products that fit that. When you do that, you need something that the customers don’t have to worry about. You can set it up; you can run it, and you know it’s going to keep going for you. And I think that’s what’s important here. It’s pretty competitive around the world, and the United States is not the cheapest place to do business, but I think we’re as clever as anywhere. And I think that by thinking about production and automation and higher end work and using good equipment and doing things in a sophisticated manner, we’ll be very competitive in the world marketplace.”

Innovative Rack & Gear is a custom manufacturer of gear racks and gears to OEMs and suppliers in a variety of industries including machine tool, automation, construction, mining, healthcare, aerospace, and defense.
A gear rack is often an integral part of a machine’s inner workings, so it’s important it is designed and manu-
factured to exact specifications. The experts at Innovative Rack & Gear have been
providing custom manufactured gear racks to the gear industry for a quarter of a century, and the company shows no signs of slowing down.
“We’ve always wanted to do the best quality,” said Zen Cichon, president of Innovative Rack & Gear. “We’ve always tried to take on jobs that are more interesting — maybe something that others don’t and couldn’t do or didn’t want to do.”
Innovative Rack & Gear is equipped to manufacture pieces from one to 10,000. To be able to accomplish that takes a company ready to take on any challenge.
The company can reverse engineer replacement parts, as well as provide break-down service during critical times, according to Cichon, and Innovative Rack & Gear will always look for the most economical solution, whether that means custom-made or by using
standard alternatives.Innovative Rack & Gear is able to bring that unique
ability to the table by using equipment that can create a variety of rack types, according to Cichon. The com-pany manufactures all types of custom, commercial, and precision, high-quality gear racks for industries such as machine tool, automation, construction, mining, oil, gas, offshore, steel, healthcare, precision instrument, aero-space, and defense.
Innovative Rack & Gear handles the more complicat-ed aspects of general machining with an assortment of Haas and Hurco CNC machining centers and lathes, and Cichon said the recent addition of a Chevalier FSG-2060 automatic precision surface grinder allows control over the quality of ground blanks and customers’ delivery schedules.
“In 2000, we got our first CNC rack milling machine that could cut spur gear racks, and then luckily we kept growing,” he said. “In 2002, we bought another one that could cut helical gear racks — and then another one in 2006.”
In 2009, Innovative invested in another machine that could cut hardened teeth instead of grinding them, according to Cichon. The company’s state-of-the-art CNC rack milling machines can cut teeth uninter-rupted up to 82 inches and even longer lengths through resetting.

For the last century, Ka-Wood Gear & Machine has been manufacturing precision gear products that include spur, helical, and worm gears, as well as producing spline shafts, racks, timing belt pulleys, and sprockets for a vast array of industries.
It’s not every company that can boast it’s been in busi-ness for a century, and that milestone is not some-
thing the owners of Ka-Wood Gear & Machine take for granted.
Those 10 decades were filled with a lot of ups and downs for the gear industry, but being able to change with the times while offering its customers top-rated service and products has made Ka-Wood Gear a consis-tent leader in gear manufacturing.
A large part of what keeps the company going strong is its product and industry diversification, according to Lenny Tuttle, co-owner and operations manager.
“We do a wide range of products in a variety of sizes and configurations,” he said. “We want to offer our cus-tomers one-stop shopping. We can hob, shape, broach, shave, mill, or grind any gear product.”
An example of promoting the one-stop shopping mindset was when rack components were added
to Ka-Wood Gear’s capabilities once Tuttle and Co- owner and VP of Operations Don Carlson came aboard in 1996.
A big part of what keeps Ka-Wood Gear successful in staying ahead of the curve when it comes to manufactur-ing trends is equipment purchases.
Prototyping is also a big part of Ka-Wood Gear’s offer-ings, thanks to an investment in several CNC machines, according to Carlson.
Additionally, Ka-Wood Gear has purchased numer-ous CNC gear hobbers and shapers, including a CNC shaper that is one-of-a-kind as it has a tilt table capable of shaping tapered teeth up to 12 degrees. The com-pany’s machines can also produce helical and crowned tooth forms.
Another service Don Carlson said Ka-Wood Gear is proud of is the company’s ability to do “hot turnarounds.”
Co-owner and President Joseph Kloka III emphasized that Ka-Wood doesn’t let the lack of a blue print stop them from helping customers.
“We will manufacture product from a sample, wheth-er it be for a machine, a classic car, or even a broken snow blower,” he said.
As the industry continues to change, the owners of Ka-Wood Gear all stressed that the company will con-tinue to do what is best for its more than 700 active cus-tomers.

Starting out almost a century ago by making clock parts, Neugart now develops, produces, and sells planetary gearboxes and custom gearboxes all around the world to a variety of industries.
Gearboxes are, quite literally, the driving force for doz-ens of industries, and Neugart makes reliable, qual-
ity gearboxes that have helped push the family-owned company into the global arena.
A large part of that success is due to Neugart’s ability to create gearboxes using a modular design.
“It’s that modular design that allows us to pretty much provide a solution for every challenge we get from the customer,” said Christian Schilling, vice president of Neugart’s U.S. location. “With our modular gearbox system, we’re using fewer parts to offer a wide range of gearboxes. It’s kind of fascinating that we can actually build a seemingly infinite number of gearbox variants with a modest number of parts.”
To that end, Neugart offers a wide variety of planetary gearboxes, as well as customized gearboxes that can be very specialized, including bevel gearboxes, spur gear-boxes, and more, according to Christian.
But more often than not, Christian said Neugart can find a gearbox that fits specific needs. And those gear-boxes are designed to last — usually clocking in at about 30,000 hours of use.
“In my experience, planetary gearboxes are like those kinds of gearboxes that fit most applications,” he said.
“However, we also offer high point gearboxes or bevel gearboxes or combinations of them with the planetary gearboxes.”
However, customized solutions also fall squarely in Neugart’s wheelhouse as well, according to Christian.
“We can build whatever the application requires, but sometimes the customer wants to have a specific kind of gearbox when other gearboxes might fit the application better,” he said. “We consult with the customers, advise them, and let them know, ‘Hey, this is pretty much a perfect solution for your challenge.’ We try to stick to the standards, but every once in a while, you need to have a customized solution for the customer in order to make it work.”
Whatever the customer may need, it boils down to working closely with them in order to ascertain what will work best for them, according to Christian.
“Every challenge is different, and that’s the most inter-esting part about it I think, but also the variety of the challenge gives us a variety of solutions and ways to solve the puzzle for the customer,” he said.
Christian said Neugart is quite proud to be a market leader when it comes to economy planetary gearboxes.
The company employs more than 700 people world-wide, including more than 600 at its headquarters in Kippenheim in southwest Germany.
“Gearbox technology itself will still play a big part in our society and in our culture — especially since elec-tronic mobility is getting bigger and bigger for cars, and that will need gearboxes as well,” Christian said.

Romax Technology provides class-leading simulation solutions for the design, analysis, testing, and manufacture of electro-mechanical drivetrain systems.
Designing, creating, and manufacturing gears and drive systems can make up a sizeable piece of a manu-
facturer’s budget. By employing innovative technology as an integral
part of the development process, much of that cost can be minimized — this is accomplished through simulation-led design and virtual prototyping.
Romax Technology does just that with its leading software platform, Romax Nexus.
“We empower end users of our products and their organizations, most often the manufacturers of gears and associated drivetrain systems, to simulate their electro-mechanical systems in an efficient, reliable man-ner early in the development process,” said Chris Baker, senior vice president of software products for Romax Technology. “Through doing so, they ultimately go to production with confidence that they will meet their product’s target DNA, as well as achieve business-critical cost and quality KPIs.”
One dimension of “target DNA” that is seeing a lot of emphasis today is sound quality, according to Baker. Romax Spectrum, one of the most popular products on the Nexus platform, provides a solution for predicting full radiated noise from a high-fidelity drivetrain model.
This caters to the noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) community and really delivers in terms of ensuring the satisfaction of the ultimate customer.
Romax is particularly proud of its enhanced bearing analysis methods developed by the company’s founder, Dr. Peter Poon, MBE, according to Baker. Those methods are employed in Romax’s products to make sure custom-ers get the most realistic results possible.
One key advantage of Romax’s software is that it’s able to overcome barriers that often exist between dif-ferent groups within organizations, according to Baker.
“You might have one group focused on NVH and another focused on efficiency or electric motor devel-opment,” he said. “Often, they don’t speak the same technical language, sit in the same department, or com-municate effectively, to be frank. What we’ve done is we’ve tailored our various product lines to suit those different audiences but have used a common model framework to facilitate collaboration through model-sharing, only exposing the parameters and features of importance to each audience. That’s one of our unique selling points.”
“This Romax Nexus platform underpins a set of six product lines and enables the aforementioned collabora-tion so that the products talk to each other,” Baker said.
Each one of the products has an interface that is mod-ern and process-oriented, making the software approach-able and flattening the learning curve for new engineers, according to Baker.

While gear design can be a challenging endeavor, the results justify the complexity of the task. However,
the process can be made a lot easier with the right tools. The software and engineering experts at Smart
Manufacturing Technology (SMT) have created solutions that can assist and eliminate many design steps, allow-ing for a quicker process and more resilient final design.
SMT’s flagship CAE software, MASTA, is well-known as the premier specialized transmission and driveline design and analysis tool. MASTA enables engineers to design robust, efficient, lightweight, and quiet trans-missions from concept design, through detailed design, and all the way to manufacture, enabling true design for manufacture.
MASTA is complemented by SMT’s MEASA TE and NVH hardware and software solution, which allows easy and accurate data acquisition of TE and NVH test data, together with data analysis tools developed specifically for transmission applications.
There are considerable productivity benefits from
having a single workflow only requiring input of data once resulting in fewer opportunities for introducing errors. SMT’s MASTA software enables engineers to start the process from a clean sheet, build models quickly, analyze their models and optimize their designs using accurate results for maximum efficiency and accu-racy when working on a project, according to Pramod Mooneeramsing, director of sales and marketing at SMT.
“SMT’s engineering services team are dedicated to solving the difficult problems that customers face, pro-viding expertise and know-how,” said Dr. Paul Langlois, software engineering director at SMT.
SMT started life as a company in 2002 with a group of engineers who were experts in software, system dynam-ics, gears, and bearings, and who are still with the com-pany today. SMT was founded with a clear vision to pro-vide solutions to engineers to bridge the gap between design and manufacturing.
SMT is a Microsoft Gold partner and develops its software on the latest Microsoft platform. This allows rapid inclusion and integration of new features with no legacy code or platform constraints to hold back further development.
SMT is always looking for ways to better itself and the software products and features it produces, and with the gear market in the automotive industry moving toward electric vehicles, SMT is confident it will continue to excel in providing solutions in full system design and analysis within MASTA, according to Mooneeramsing.

Remind our readers of Piselli Enterprises’ role in the gear-manufacturing industry. We have over 30 years of experience buying and selling used gear equipment. I was the previous owner of RP Machine Enterprises that I had sold in 2014. Two years later, we went back into the business as a leaner operation to service the gear industry.
We’re able to source, rebuild, repair, and maintain high-quality used gear equipment. Because of our vast experience in the gear industry, our network enables us to address a variety of our custom-ers’ needs quickly and efficiently.
How do you work with a customer when they come to you with a challenge that involves a gear or a spline or gearbox they need manufactured? Most customers that contact us are pre-pared to tell us what they want, but if a customer needs more information, or is seeking consultation on a machine, we are more than happy to discuss a pos-sible solution. Over time, I have built up a team of engineers I can contact for further recommendations on possible machines to fulfill a customer’s specific requirement.
Why does your more than 30 years of experience give you an advantage compared to competitors? Because during those years, I have owned several manufacturing com-panies across a portfolio of industries including mining, automotive, and off-highway. Each of these industries requires different types of gear-manu-facturing equipment, and when a cus-tomer comes to me with a need, I can provide a solution with the experienced knowledge necessary. Typically, I am able to address a customer’s needs with my vast inventory.
What are the advantages of buying used gear equipment?Used gear equipment is the most cost-effective approach to manu-facturing in the gear industry. As technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, along with its price, there exists a great opportunity in the used gear machinery market to provide a similar product at a fraction of the price of new equipment.
How does your auctioneering business feature into the overall industry? It gives customers another option. It’s for customers with not only gear machines, but for those with other types of equipment, a smaller plant, a line of product that’s not specific to gear cutting, or addi-tional operations like lathes and mills and turning and machining. This brings in our auctioneering expertise in which we can offer a way for them sell their equipment in that product line.
That allows them a better opportunity to find the best qualified buyer, which, ultimately, leads to a better purchase price.
Where and how can customers get in touch with you?We own a 100,000-square-foot facility in Statesville, North Carolina, and a quality staff of engineers willing to assist with any questions involving machinery, tools, parts, and service.
