A very large number of people have contributed to thismagnificent record of the first thirty-five years of the University ofSurrey, and I am most grateful to all of them. I would like to thankin particular Christopher Pick, who wrote the text; The ColourWorks, for design and production; Sylvia Tyler, who did excellentwork in assembling the illustrations; the staff of our archives, ledby Arthur Chandler and more recently by Maureen Shettle; andTrevor Thorne, the University’s Director of Marketing and PublicAffairs, who has led and co-ordinated the project.

I would like to thank Patrick Dowling and Trevor Thorne forgiving me the opportunity to write this book and to immersemyself in the history and current work of a fascinating institution.

The two principal sources I used in researching my text werethe University’s extensive archives and interviews with a largenumber of University staff members, past and present, andfriends of the University. I would particularly like to thank all ofthem for taking the time to talk to me, for providing me withmuch useful source material, and for checking parts of the text. They are: Alf Adams, Steve Baker, Susan Balgarnie, PeterBeardsley, Bill Bellerby, Glynis Breakwell, Gwyn Brown, PeterButterworth, Derry Caleb, Arthur Chandler, Mike Clark, JaneCohen, Tom Crawshaw, Alwyn Davies, John Davies, Wyn Davies,Patrick Dowling, Sir George Edwards, Lewis Elton, Pat Grayburn,Peter Goldfarb, Bob Gunn, John Hobrough, Gordon Hartman,Barry Hitchcock, Nigel Hodge, John Humphries, Adam Jakeway,David James, Brian Johnson, Anthony Kelly, Michael Kipps,R Kotas, Sir Richard Meyjes, Audrey Nice, Bill North, Oliver

Ialso drew on the two invaluable previous histories of theUniversity and Battersea Polytechnic, by Roy Douglas and HArrowsmith.

In addition, a very large number of people in the Universityand outside it provided information and checked sections of thetext. That they are too numerous to name here does not diminishmy gratitude to them.

I must, however, mention especially Emeritus Professor JohnSalmon, who was a never-failing source of information and adviceon Battersea Polytechnic and on the first years of the University inGuildford; and Sylvia Tyler, who, besides assembling a superbcollection of illustrations, acted as a guide to the University duringthe 1980s and 1990s. In addition I am most grateful to all thealumni who contributed recollections of their years in Guildfordand Battersea; to Leonard Kail, John Salmon, Arthur Tarrant andJohn Taylor, each of whom wrote one of the portraits of key figuresin the University’s history; and to Gordon Hartman and RichardHinton, for supplying the images of leaves from trees in theUniversity’s collection that appear on the inside covers of this book.

I would also like to thank Gemma Madle, who undertookresearch at an early stage in the project, Catherine Dawson andAntony Mason for editorial assistance, Suzanne Bosman for helpwith photographs, Maureen Shettle of the University’s archives,Christopher Yates, archivist at Westminster–Kingsway College(which now occupies what was formerly the principal building ofBattersea Polytechnic), and Robin Bishop and Margaret Bryant forarchitectural and historical advice.
