This is our 8th year for the event held the fi rst weekend in October. We are advertising to states beyond those adjoining Nebraska’s borders. As of 2019 we have seven (7) Corridor Counties who participate in the Byway and Trail of Treasures events. In 2016, Red Willow began participating; in 2017, Hitchcock and in 2018, Dundy County are participating which takes us from Missouri on the East to Colorado on the West!!! During our October event you will fi nd Antiques, Collectibles, Re-purposed, Vintage, Primitive, Shabby Chic, Chalk Painted Furniture, Galvanized, Farm Finds, Crafts and much more along the route. Home Décor and Unique Items you won’t fi nd anywhere else!!!It is an opportunity to meet new friends, enjoy delicious food and have loads of fun!!!

This Shopper Guide contains a map for each participating town and a list of all the Registered Vendors and Advertisers.

NOTE TO SHOPPERS - FOLLOW THE OFFICIAL Trail of Treasures™ SIGNS: Look for the Offi cial Trail of Treasures™ signs of the Vendors. These signs have been professionally printed in Purple this year. The number on the bottom of the sign matches their number in the Shopper Guide. These are the people who make Trail of Treasures™ the exciting event that it is!!! Please support only those vendors and advertisers who have our “Offi cial” Trail of Treasures™ signs! Take time to say “Thank you for making Trail of Treasures™ possible.”

A MAP OF THE ENTIRE Trail of Treasures™ IS LOCATED AT THE CENTER OF THIS GUIDE

INDEX PAGES: In an effort to help you chart a Trail to all our participating towns, we have indexed them in two different ways...for both left and right brain folks. Index # 1 lists the towns in alphabetical order. Index #2 lists the towns starting from the eastern end of the Byway to the Colorado line on the west.

Cook 10 miles north of Tecumseh. The Missouri Pacifi c Railroad, surveying for a line to run through northern

Johnson County in the spring of 1887, accepted the offer of land for its right-of-way from John William Cook. Cook was founded in 1888 when the railroad was extended to that point and the town was named for Andrew Cook, the original owner of the town site. Settlers were excited about the artesian wells found in the area, some rising several feet about the surface.

Called “spouters,” these fl owing wells could be found by drilling only a short depth into the ground. Cook, referred to as the “Artesian City,” has always obtained its water from this type of well.

Jansen Russian settler Peter Jansesn (Jansen) and a small group of 50 fellow Mennonites left Russia in 1873 and purchased 20,000 acres from the Burlington and Missouri Railroad where they established seven settlements. With word of the

Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacifi c Railroad coming through the area, Jansen bought 80 more acres and on Aug. 20, 1886, mapped out the town. Railroad offi cials honored local rancher and politician Jansen by naming the new

town after him. Within one year, 13 businesses had been built, including a bank. Founded by Jansen, the bank has operated continuously since that time, though it has changed leaders and names.

President’s Message: 2019“BORDER TO BORDER ACROSS SOUTHERN NEBRASKA”

As President of Byway 136 and Chair of Trail of Treasures, I would like to say a special thanks to all the Vendors and Advertisers listed in this Shopper Guide. Without all of you, we would not have an event called Trail of Treasures! Unfortunately, there are always those people who try to profi t from those Vendors and Advertisers that are willing to participate with paid listings. We encourage you Shoppers to stop ONLY where you see our offi cial Trail of Treasures signs – this year they will be Purple/White!!! Many hours and time goes into making this event happen so we want it to be an enjoyable experience for our shoppers! Also thank you to my co-coordinator, Bobbie Meints and our publisher people (Chris and Jen) at Courtside Marketing. Courtside Marketing (Enterprise Publishing) owns several newspapers – one of them being the Wilber Newspaper in Saline County. Saline County is a member or Byway 136. We try to promote those people who help promote us. We have “Offi cial” Professionally Printed Signs in Purple/White for all the Registered Participants and encourage the Shoppers to support ONLY the vendors displaying the Offi cial Signs and take time to say “Thank you for making Byway 136 – Trail of Treasures possible!!” We are always looking for photos and stories of any of your Trail of Treasures experiences. You can email them to [email protected] or text to 402-335-0745 or mail to P.O. Box 59, Tecumseh, Nebraska, 68450.

Reynolds Reynolds is a small village located in Jefferson County. Reynolds was platted in 1880 when the Chicago, Burlington

and Quincy Railroad was extended to that point. It was named for the father of a railroad conductor on that line. William Menary and W. H. Debuse were the founders of the town. The birth of Reynolds caused the demise of “Rose Creek City” which was about two and a half miles northwest. Most of the buildings from Rose Creek City were moved to Reynolds.

NaponeeNaponee is near the Republican River, about 3 miles downstream from Harlan County Dam, and about 2 miles south

of U.S. Highway 136. The fi rst settlers to the Naponee area arrived in 1869. Naponee’s name originates with Napanee, Ontario, the hometown of a Canadian who fought in the Civil War and bought land along the Republican River. A post

offi ce was established in 1871 and in 1877, the fi rst store opened and was followed by the village’s fi rst survey 1879. Railroad service arrived in 1879 with the Burlington Railroad reaching town. Incorporation of the village of Naponee

took place on November 30, 1909. David Janssen, the fi lm and television actor, was born in Naponee.

Three days of funFriday through Sunday

Please don’t make us pick up After you on Monday!

Benkelman Benkelman was originally called Collinsville, in honor of Moses Collins, and under that name was founded circa

1880. In 1882, it was renamed Benkelman by the railroad for J. G. Benkelman who established one of the largest cattle shipping points next to the town. In 1895 there were 22 towns in Dundy County. Only 4 of these remain “on the map” - Benkelman, Haigler, Parks and Max. Benkelman takes great pride that the well-known actor Ward Bond was born and raised here. The Bond’s, Baney and Ham families still live in Benkelman. The town has honored Ward with

road signs identifying this as his hometown and naming the city park in his memory.

Haigler Whether traveling north on Highway 27 from Kansas or east on Highway 34 from Colorado, the fi rst town in Nebraska

is Haigler, population 230. It is the state’s “cornerstone.” The townsite was the homestead of James and Arabelle Porter, the fi rst family to settle here and who built a mercantile store.

The Burlington Railroad extended its lines from Indianola to Denver in 1881-82. The mail was dispatched at Jake Haigler’s ranch house, two miles west, so the railroad called it “Haigler’s” Station.

Haigler was platted in 1886. It was named for Jacob Haigler, the pioneer settler where the mail had been dispatched.
