Comments There is a clear demonstration that the relationship between Petruchio and Katherina is based more on power than love. The focus is on the different stages of their relationship – their first meeting, their wedding, the ‘taming’ process at home, and the play’s final scene. The candidate makes good use of relevant details and gives examples of the violence and control that Petruchio exhibits in his behaviour and use of language throughout in order to reinforce the argument and rebut contrary views.

Comments

This detailed response compares the different ways in which death is treated in To Kill a Mockingbird and The Painted Veil. It closely examines its functions in the two texts, offering insight into how death develops plot, throws light on the qualities of characters (e.g. Mrs Dubois and Walter), facilitates their development (e.g. Scout, Jem and Kitty), and advances themes (e.g. education and different forms of prejudice).

Comments (i) This serves as a good example of a well-balanced discussion of both poems, identifying the

effect of personification and synecdoche. A more cross-text comparative emphasis would strengthen the answer.

(ii) An impressive attempt to identify rhyme scheme and corrupted metre pattern and, more importantly, to explain their technical contribution in terms of subject matter and theme.

(iii) A strong answer in terms of content, support and structural development.

Sample 2: Section B, Question 6

Comments (i) A well-written and detailed commentary that maintains a comparative focus, noting the

depersonalisation effect of correctly identified techniques. (ii) This is a logical attempt to explain the function of regular rhyme and asymmetrical metre. (iii) The answer demonstrates an excellent understanding of how a range of poetic techniques

enhance the depiction of a gradually-building power.
