Only Here.WINE MADE FROM EXTREMES

The Gorge Wine region is a powerful place. It’s a place of extremes—in climate, scenery and style of wine—where the astounding beauty of the landscape is inextricable from its allure as a world class wine region.

It’s a modern frontier, of sorts, undergoing discovery and growth while holding fast to what makes it special. The extreme conditions that shape the wine are unique to this region—to be sensed, embraced, and celebrated.

Creativity is at the heart of the vision for Gorge Wine. The region is marked by an intrepid spirit that seeks to craft something extraordinary through inspiration in dialog with the land.

EXPERIENCE THE EXPRESSION OF 40 MILES OF INTENSE GEOGRAPHY AND TRANSITIONING CLIMATES

Less than an hour east of Portland, nestled between the majestic peaks of Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams lies the Gorge Wine region. This grape-growing district is defined by the Columbia River as it cuts through the Cascade Range at the only sea level passage,

between the Arctic Circle to San Francisco. Here, terrains range from nearly sea level to alpine, with highly variable aspect. The dramatic transition in topography is enhanced by the influx of cool moisture from the Pacific, which brings 50+ inches of rain per year to the eastern foothills of the Cascades but drops as little as 10 inches on the region’s arid, inland end.

Though most wine regions don’t cross state lines, the Gorge Wine region is comprised of an intrepid group of winemakers and growers on both shores of the river, in Oregon and Washington, bound by their passion for the work and commitment to the land. Utilizing more than 50 different premium grape varieties grown across this 40 mile stretch, winemakers have a unique opportunity to create distinction and reveal place as they hone their craft.

Our staff is knowledgeable about our wine and the Columbia Gorge and will take your palate on a journey through the many varietals that we grow in this area. Idiot’s Grace Wines are the production of a small, family-owned Estate winery in the Columbia Gorge. Our several plots—established since 2003, overlooking the River on both the Oregon and Washington sides—are farmed organically with imagination and humility; the wines, wild-fermented and unposturing, seek originality from this dramatic growing region. Faithful to their vintages, our offerings reflect the restless work of matching grape to place. Tasting flights, bottle sales and tours are available at the winery, nestled amongst our vineyards and orchards in the Mosier Hills.

A magical property where every vine sees the Columbia River and Mt. Hood from this south facing, gently sloped farm. Nestled against Discovery Reach and across from the Discovery Center, we are on the bank of the Columbia River on the Washington side. The ancient floods and mix of gravel, sand, loam and basalt give mineral sustenance. Constant winds and organic farming make for ideal health and establishment of flavorful thicker skins that make this a truly perfect site for the very greatest wine grapes. Just outside White Salmon we have what many say is the most beautiful views of the Hood River Valley and Mount Hood in the Gorge. Our south facing vineyard resembles a “catcher’s mitt” as it scoops in the sun and the 400ft elevation drop from 1350 feet from top to bottom assures cool air and moisture flow away. Our loamy clay soil is producing some of the most exciting grapes across our microclimates.

Windhorse VineyardThe Dalles, OR Alan Busacca 509-592-0756 windhorsevineyard.com [email protected] Planted: Zinfandel (daughter of Pines Old Vine Zin), Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

Windhorse Vineyard (the former Volcano Ridge Vineyard) at 1200’ is planted in soils eked out of ancient volcanic mudflows on steep canyon lands. Our vineyards are surrounded by our more than 130 acres of pristine oak-pine woodland. We are the only vineyard in the Columbia Gorge AVA that is certified sustainable by LIVE & Salmon Safe. We’re celebrating our 12th year in 2019 with new partners and a new name! To be planted in 2019: Primitivo 03 clone and 3 clones of Syrah! Wineries: suggest other varieties you want for more new plantings in 2020 and 2021.

Elevation of vineyards ranges from river level to 2,000 feet (610 m), greatly impacting temperature of vineyard sites.

Predominant soils formed in volcanic rock, lahar, loess, and alluvium.

Climate transitions from maritime on the western end to continental on the eastern end in only 40 miles (65 km).

This transitional climate supports diverse varieties, while retaining acidity and building structure.

Precipitation is normally sufficient for vine growth, recharging the soil profile from November through May while providing drier summer conditions for healthy fruitfrom bud break all the way through fruit set.
