NIGHT Homecoming night is full of events that cap off a week's worth of activities. The football game is played, the princesses and homecoming queen are crowned, the different classes show off their imaginative floats during half-time festivities, and a dance is held at the end of the evening. This year it was a very successful and enjoyable night. The weather was basically cooperative and people turned out in full force.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS Each Spring, for the last couple of years, athletes from Ontario, Wa:xne. Seneca, and Yates counties have gathered here at Midlakes to participate in the Track and Field events for Special Olympics. Athletes are grouped according to their disabilities and participate in various events including the 50m walk, 50m, 100m, 200m, BOOm, and 1500m runs. Other field events include the standing long jump, softball throw, and shot put. Students in Participation in Government classes volunteer their time and energy to work with the athletes, timing events, recording results, mesuring distances, handing out awards, and generally being buddies to the athletes. Over 200 athletes participate in these events, with those who qualify moving on to the next level which is held in Rochester.

Field Day 1997 was a success. For the last couple years, the Midlakes Student Council has worked hard to put on both

a student and teacher oriented event. This day of fun is held on Senior Skip

Day, so underclassmen have the rule of the school. There were many different activities on Field Day such as; soccer,

baseball, volleyball, a D.J. for dancing in the cafeteria, board games, movies to

watch, and a host of other opportunities for fun. Students and teachers both were

encouraged to interact together in the activities. The weather held out and it

turned out to be a glorious~ , 11'

MAIN OFFICE

Mr. Mario Scalzi- Principal

This past year has been an interesting one for all of us. The office staff has seen its share of faces come and go during the past year. We all, as faculty, staff, and student body have struggled to keep up with the changes this past year has brought. At the beginning of the year we had Mr. Whitcomb as our principal. He however left us in January to take on a position as Athletic Director for Brighton school district. After Mr. Whitcomb, leadership was shared by Mr. Steven Szatko, Mrs. Virginia Diesenberg, and occasionally the office staff themselves! We were left wondering what would happen next. Mr. Mario Scalzi then joined us February 2, 1998 as an interim principal until a permanent replacement could be found. Mr. Scalzi brings with him a wealth of experience to assist Midlakes High School in meeting the challenges they face. The rest of our year should run more smoothly than the beginning did!

Looking back on the memory of The dance we shared 'neath the stars above For a moment all the world was right

1

How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye

And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end , The way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance.

"The Dance" - Garth Brooks

Jason, Thanks for the dance.

Even though your gone, in our hearts you still belong.

Your an angel in the sky, with a smile that makes us fly.

With a heart that was solid gold, and love that you never sold.

With big brown eyes and long brown hair, when you were there you always did care.

Together we will someday be, Just like before you and me!

HONOR The Class of 1998 has one of the

largest groups of Honor Graduates in recent years. Their collegiate plans range from Music and English to Engineering, Environmental Biology, Music Management, Political Science, Animal Science, and Ceramic Engineering.

When asked to identify the persons who had the greatest influence on their academic success, several of them were quick to give credit to family members for providing motivation and encouragement. Bronwen praised her grandmother because she *never let me give up and made me believe that I could do anything I put my mind to". Others, like Brett, gave credit to teachers who, "showed me a world that I never knew existed and helped me to be a better member of the environment."

These Super Seniors have also been affected by the technological revolution. Chris, Bronwen, and Margaret all gave thanks to Texas Instruments for their TI-82 and TI-83 calculators, while April and

. Bronwen Van Hoofl

GRADS Carrie were equally thankful for the spell-checker that improved the quality of their writing. Brett was one of several who were glad to be part of the computer age. As he put it, "it has allowed my teachers to read my handwriting." For Micah, the automobile has provided a measure of freedom, while Matt can only *bask in the glow• of the light from his refrigerator. Bea is grateful for the microwave, which covers for her lack of *culinary expertise".

early one third of this group feel that participating in theater is the experience that has had the most significant impact on their high school career. They give credit their thespian endeavors for teaching " self discipline and responsibility"(Jen), "to manage my time better"(Amy)"the courage to speak in front of people"(Carrie). Others gave credit to their athletic endeavors for •helping me to learn a work ethic"(Becca) and "teamwork and the value of never giving up"(Chris)

For several of our superior students, travel and change stands out as their most memorable experience. •It allowed me to open up and meet new people."(Brett) "It was so many experiences in one."(Matt). For Doug, the travel from Europe to Texas was a turning point experience, as he worked extra hard to get out of their schools as soon as he could, while Anna pointed out that changing schools in her senior year really taught her a lot about herself and what she is capeable of accomplishing.

One member of this august group struck a more sobering note when he remarked that the death of his classmate, Jason Owens, "made me realize how fragile life really is."

SENIOR TRIP '97

The •Capitol• bus crew. ). Ceravolo. D. Birdsev, A. Drake, P. Conrad. & ~1. Brucker share a toast at lunch. -

A guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Chris Buttaccio at the zoo.

The senior trip this year was full of excitement for everyone. It started out when every individual dragged themselves to the school at five a.m. Saturday morning. By the time we hit Washington. we were beat but managed to see a couple of monuments . Sunday night we were able to cut loose on the cruise (A major highlight). Over the next couple of days we were all kept on our feet seeing as much as we possibly could. Other highlights of the trip was when Mr. Walker got left at the mall. the hot tub. pool. and the shopping centers. Even though most of the senior class was tired, and worn out from our long journey we all had a good time. Some of our friendships grew closer and some people made new friends. It was a trip that we will all remember for the rest of our lives. -A. Hammond

When asked to imagine that they could live anywhere in the world ... Sophomores felt that somewhere in

the tropics might suit them best.

Sophomores ranked friends more important than, school, work, or

MTV!!!

A favorite actor of the Sophomores was Leonardo

DiCaprio. (Probably due to his exposure in films like the

Titanic this year!)

If Sophomores ruled the world, they would build McDonald's

every five miles all around the world.

Sophomore favor Pizza as their means of nurishment.

Being a famous athlete topped the list of choices when asked

who they would most like to be.

BASEBALL The 1997 Varsity Baseball season was filled with a lot of ups and downs. They were outstanding offensively but they were unable to consistently hold off the other teams. While playing against the always tough Finger Lakes East teams from the area, these guys never gave up. Highlights of the season included; a one run loss to eventual League Champ Victor, a one run loss to eventual Class B champion Bishop Kearney, victory over

ewark, and an exciting 12 to 11 win over Pal-Mac in the sectionals. Despite a disappointing 1997 campaign, the Eagles should be fielding a much more experienced and wise team in 1998.

Determination, perseverance, hard work, and countless hours of preparation are but a few of the winning attributes of the Midlakes Track and Field team. The coaching expertise of Mr. Ierlan, Mr. Dixon, Mrs. Wilbur, and Mr. Baker also helped to make the 1997 season a great success. The boys' team had an explosive season highlighted by several victories over rival schools. Each point Midlakes was awarded was laborously earned and well deserved. By the end of the season, everyone had pulled together to land a great second place overall standing. For the girls, a feeling of nervousness encompassed each meet as they knew they had high expectations to live up to. However, at the sound of the gun, this anxiety turned to power and helped lead the girls to victory time after time. For the fourth consecutive year, the Midlakes girls' track and field team was named Finger Lakes West's league champions. With the 1998 season quickly approaching, we can expect to see equally great accomplishments by some of the same amazing athletes that helped to make last season such a success. Both the boys and the girls have a lot to live up to, and it will be interesting to see if they can stay on top.

GOLF With a team dominated by un

derclassmen, the Varsity golfers enjoyed a season of near-misses. After losing two of their first four matches by less than ten strokes, they surged through the middle of the season with a three-match winning streak, including victories over Penn Yan. Canandaigua, and Victor. While inexperience may have contributed to another string of losses, the boys remained competitive, closing out the season with a seven-stroke loss to Penn Yan.

Coach Walker was encouraged by the fact that several of the younger golfers on the team managed to drop their scores over the course of the season. He was particularly impressed with the steady play of Junior Josh Akin, whose consistency kept Midlakes in several matches.

Invitations to play in post season tournaments went to Chuck Compson and Chris Russell.

GIRLS' TENNIS

Led by Senior Jane Hawman at singles and the doubles team of Tina Ebel and Heather Fox, the tennis team worked to a second place finish in the Western Division of the Finger Lakes League. The mixture of Seniors and underclassmen gained valuable match experience in victories over Mynderse, Victor, Bishop Kearney, Aquinas. and Waterloo, while losing close matches to ewark and Canandaigua.

As is often the case, being members of a team meant as much to many of the girls as the actual match experience. The bus rides to and from the matches, with frequent stops at Taco Bell will also be part of the memory of this years tennis season.

FOOTBALL 1997

As the dew condensed early tl: August morning, dreams, hopes. a aspirations ran high. Talks of anoth Sectional championship bounc from ear to ear and the "fish storie~ told to all the new Varsity playe sprang up like wild flowers. After II weeks of agony and twenty pound sweat. we were still standing, shorto numbers, but full of hope.

The most critical judgement ape son can make of another is how their heart is, and collectively, o team had more to give than our bod could hold. While many of our gam found us on the short side of a losi:: score, the numbers never reflected t! effort given as a whole.

Being a young team leads to son: mistakes. but this team played ,,; no fear against opponents who we often older, bigger, and more exper enced. In the seasons to come, Midlal es will be. once again. the team to reckoned with, so long as players r: member to lead with desire.

l\fidlakes team spirit!!!

The Midlakes Boy's Volleyball team has a long tradition of excellence to uphold. This year's squad, under the guidance of Coach Salisbury, upheld that tradition very well. According to Bryon Hanna, the Seniors on the squad were also motivated by the tragic death of a member of last year's team, to whom their quest for another Section V patch was dedicated.

Led by offensive standouts Ryan Maslyn and Brian Witter, and backed by the stalwart defense of Jim Linden, the boys compiled an overall record of 13 wins and 7 losses. Their 10-2 league record

was good enough for Second Place, while their 13-5 Section V record earned them a 2nd seed in the Section V tournament, where they fought their way to a third place finish.

Several members of the squad were honored with post-season awards. Brian Witter was named Most Valuable Player, a member of the Section V All-Tournament Team, and Finger Lakes Regional All Star. Other Finger Lakes All Stars included Ryan Maslyn. Jim Linden, Justin Roloson, Todd Wyjad, Jesse Morris, and Guilford Mack.

While the Boy's Soccer program did not produce a winning record, it was a season marked by some milestones and some individual achievements. First-year Junior Varsity Coach Stacy Donald was honored by Section V as the Assistant Coach of the year. The Varsity won the 100th game in its history with a 6-0 victory over Dundee. (According to Coach Wilbur, Dundee was also the opponent in Midlakes' first soccer victory.) Ben Happ was named a First Team All Star. This year was a difficult one for the yearbook. We were rather shorthanded. We started out with a large group of people willing and dedicated. They were seniors, however, and when that section of the yearbook was finished we found our staff greatly reduced. With bare bones we plugged along doing the best we could. We did retain a small group of people that were inexperienced but willing, and that helped tremendously. With the difficulties we faced this year, the staff worked hard to put out a good book. We hope that you enjoy your yearbook. For those of you who will be here next year, come join us we could use you!

We also promote Alcohol Awareness month April. This Year we are having a guest speaker. Youth to Youth also show youth that there are many ways to enjoy life and have fun without the use of drugs or alcohol. This year we attended a conference at Victor High School. we are also participating in the second annual Y2Y movie night at Showplace 5 in ewark. Together with the Newark Y2Y, we are locked in the movie theatre from 11:30 pm until 9:00 am. We watch three movies and there are snacks and door prizes all night. A big event for us next year will be to co-sponsor a conference with ewark Youth to youth in the Spring of 1999.

This year's officers are: President: Becca Timerson Vice President: Jenn Chase Secretary: Lynn Landschoot Treasurer: Missy Greek-Rouse

THE ELEPHANT

MAN

THE ELEPHANT MAN is based on the life of John Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. A horribly deformed young man, who has been a freak attraction in traveling side shows, is found abandoned and helpless. He is admitted for ob ervation to Whitechapel, a prestigious London hospital. Under the care of a famous young doctor, who educates him and introduces him to London society, Merrick changes from a sensational object of pity to the urbane and witty favorite of the aristocracy.

All seem's bright in the Christmas of 1933, for little Orphan Annie has found a home. Adopted by wealthy Daddy Warbucks, • Annie just ain't Annie anymore .. .", but little does she expect her joy to be cut short by a pushy visitor. When Commissioner Harriet Doyle presents Daddy Warbucks with a court order demanding that Annie have a mother, he has no choice but to search for a suitable wife. Annie sees that the obvious choice would be Warbucks secretary, Grace, but Warbucks seems to regard Grace as no more than an employee. However, the Commissioner has plans of her own. It is a shock when War bucks announces a new face, Mrs. Kelly, as his bride to be. Annie feels suddenly alone, and runs away to Tennessee. o one suspects the Commissioner to be Mrs. Kelley's mother, nor do they know their master plan: To marry Warbucks utilizing the false court order and ultimately kill him, collecting his fortune. With the help of new friends, Annie returns home, and reluctantly accepts their engagement. Fortunately, Grace becomes suspicious and discovers the truth about the devious duo, and is able to stop the wedding moments before the vows take place. As the Commissioner and her daughter are taken away, Grace and Daddy \Varbucks speak their true feelings, and are married, much to Annie's approval.

An all out effort is made from the President's office to find Annie!

BAND The Midlakes Band has been very active this year building on the Midlakes tradition of excellence. We began the year by hosting the Greater Rochester Music Educators Wind Band (A band of music educators from the Rochester area) in ovember. More than three quarters of the Midlakes Band students performed in concert with this group. It was also Midlakes turn to host the Junior /Senior High All County Music Festival in January.

)azzin' it up!

The entire Midlakes Band assembles for a shot.

Over 500 students were involved and the auditorium was filled to capacity. Thank you to all the willing volunteers who helped make this an excellent event and great publicity for our school. We will finish this year on a great"note", when the band holds a Spring AI umni concert with over 100 people on stage making music. The Band will also travel to Charleston, south Carolina and will perform for a rating.

Midlakes High School chorus has grown to a marvelous number of over 90 students this year. They are all very enthusiastic, even if they do have to meet during first period at 7:40! In October, they went to see "Godspell" at Nazareth College. In April, many students will be traveling with Mrs. DeRuyter to New York City to see "Cats" and "Titanic". They will do their Spring concert in May, and take a trip to Darien Lake in June.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE ...

Adrian Rossman Bergasse 4/ 18 1090 Vienna

Austria

Adrian decided to come to the United States after his parents offered him the chance to visit another country. Having been here several times before the transition from Austria to America was an easy one for him. Adrian has been staying with Ruth and Gilbert Adams. One of the things that he likes best about being here in the United States are the T.V. shows. Compared to Austria entertainment is a much bigger deal here in the U.S. Adrian dislikes the high fat content in American foods compared to being back home. Some of his favorite foods are pizza, pasta, and some Austrian meals. As for the future Adrian plans on attending a college in Vienna or if possible return to the United States to further his education. Adrian loves American humor and has noticed that people in the United States are much more laid back. The people in Austria are much more conservative compared to us fun loving people in the U.S. While here at Midlakes Adrian has enjoyed sharing his time with the Midlakes Theatre Experi-

ence. During the fall show he helped to build sets. Adrian could have been seen on stage in GREASE as a chorus member.

AFS is a non profit organization which has been sponsoring high school exchanges for over 50 years. Our local chapter also has sponsored Tiffany Figel, who is spending the second semester in Italy. This organization provides a rewarding opportunity to form a partnership between family and student as well as country to country.

Adrian takes time to speak with an interested community member at a meeting earlier in the year.

Carla Ruiz staying with Matt and Jessica King. She likes the suburbs because of the trees and animals. At home, she lives in the city. She does not like the fact that you need a car to go everywhere, however! Carla misses the warm weather of Mexico (can't blame her there!). Her favorite foods are pizza and of course Mexican dishes. She still has two years of high school left when she returns home to Mexico. After graduating she plans on attending the University to study a career. She has yet to pick her future job. While here in Clifton Springs, she played Soccer, Basket-

She came to the United States to study a different language and take part in a different culture. All of us here at Midlakes would like to thank Carla for all the memories that she has helped us to create and wish her the best in her future.

MAA

Bookstore ...

The bookstore has seen some more dedication and growth this year. We have a small but willing crew to help keep the store running. We are trying to work into branching out and providing more services to the student body. One area we would like to see improved is the availability of the store during the day. We would like to increase our hours and provide more access. We continue to work away at our goals!

Masterminds ...

Masterminds is a group of students who compete with other groups of students from around the area in a quiz show type format. They match wits to vie for area titles.
