2019 – 2020

Dear Members and Friends,

As I write this, we are all dealing with challenging times for our families and our communities, navigating the uncharted waters of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our hearts go out to those impacted by the crisis, and we express our deepest appreciation for the countless heroes working tirelessly to keep us safe and healthy. Amidst these challenges, positive things are happening too. Neighbors are helping neighbors and families are spending time together, reconnecting in new and creative ways.

Against the backdrop of these challenges, the Women’s Fund stands out as an inspired example of positive action. In May 2020, we awarded $685,000 in grants—$100,000 more than last year. The collective generosity of our 1,100 members made this possible.

The Women’s Fund Board reaffirmed our mission and our vision, and we recommitted to the values that make the Women’s Fund unique:

• We make large grants based on our own thorough research.• We educate and inspire our members to become more engaged in the community.• We invest in our organization to maximize effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability.

We deepened our commitment to member education, augmenting our traditional site visits with three Grants in Action forums. These programs helped members gain a deeper understanding of the issues and problems our grantees are facing and successfully addressing. The forums and site visits advanced our goal of educating and inspiring women to make lasting change in our community.

In 2019, we became an independent nonprofit, completing the transition from a Field of Interest Fund at the Santa Barbara Foundation to fully independent operations. We are incredibly fortunate to have talented, thoughtful women to lead the Women’s Fund into the future, and we thank them for their time, expertise and commitment. Additionally, we are grateful to the Santa Barbara Foundation for providing us a home for 15 years and for their staff who helped us achieve a smooth transition.

The independent Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara continues to be dedicated to Changing Lives Together. You each contribute to the success of this amazing organization. Thank you!

A LETTER FROM OUR CHAIR

Laurie Tumbler2019-2020 Board Chair

Our Mission

The Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara is a volunteer-led collective donor organization that enables women to combine our charitable dollars into significant grants addressing the critical needs of women, children and families in south Santa Barbara County. The Women’s Fund educates and inspires women to engage in making lasting change in our community.

How the Women’s Fund Works

WE WELCOME ALL WOMEN to join as members. No invitation is required.

WE COMBINE OUR CHARITABLE DONATIONS to make significant grants to local nonprofits, making an even greater impact than most of us can do on our own.

WE IDENTIFY critical community issues.

WE RESEARCH local nonprofits that address selected community issues. The process includes a review of a nonprofit’s finances, leadership, sustainability and anticipated results and ensures that all projects are compelling and worthy of support. A ballot of potential grants is created for member consideration.

WE VOTE in the spring to choose the nonprofits the Women’s Fund will support.

WE CELEBRATE the announcement of new grantees at our Celebration of Grants in the spring.

WE EVALUATE the impact of our grants through grantee visits and year-end reports.

WE LEARN…while Changing Lives Together. Grants in Action issue forums plus published background papers provide facts and context for understanding complex community issues.

Alpha Resource Center of Santa Barbara has an adult day-care program that serves low-income clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Alpha provides approximately 80 trips weekly into the community to enable clients to do volunteer work and receive physical therapy. A $65,000 Women’s Fund grant in 2019 funded a much-needed new van equipped with an easy-to-operate lift to accommodate one wheelchair and three passengers or two wheelchairs and one passenger.

WHAT IS THE WOMEN’S FUND?

CALM is working with the Carpinteria Health Care Clinic (CHCC) and Carpinteria Children’s Project in a collaborative effort called the Carpinteria Resiliency Project. This initiative targets what are known as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), defined as early childhood trauma including neglect, abuse and household dysfunction. ACEs have been directly linked to negative long-term mental and physical health outcomes, including depression, cancer and heart disease. A $55,000 Women’s Fund grant funded a specially-trained CALM therapist who provides mental-health counseling to families with young children who may need extended therapeutic services based on ACEs screening.

Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics (SBNC) realized that wheelchair users and other special-needs individuals often lack access to dental care because they are unable to transfer into conventional dental chairs. Treatment options are limited when a patient’s fragility, pain, size or body weight make it impossible to use a standard chair. A $70,000 Women’s Fund grant funded two compact wheelchair platforms for use in SBNC dental clinics in Santa Barbara and Goleta. Using these platforms, low-income patients—mostly women and handicapped children—now have access to comprehensive dental care and treatment.

Transition House is the only local emergency shelter that accepts families with children. These families account for 20 percent of the local homeless population, according to the 2019 Point in Time count. At Transition House, parents have access to child care and structured support while developing skills needed to secure housing—an approach that has resulted in 70-80% of their families moving into stable housing each year. A recent policy shift in government funding created a significant funding gap for Transition House. An $80,000 Women’s Fund grant provided bridge funding for one year to help maintain current emergency shelter services while Transition House sought new funding sources.

Catholic Charities of Santa Barbara (CCSB) has worked to strengthen self-sufficiency and prevent hunger and homelessness in the community since 1924. By selling low-cost clothes and household items, the CCSB Thrift Store generates income to fund its wide range of social services programs. The Thrift Store’s 50-year-old roof was badly leaking, causing damage to income-producing inventory and interior floors. A $50,000 Women’s Fund grant funded a new Thrift Store roof guaranteed for 40 years and for repairs to the water-damaged floor.

Family Service Agency (FSA), in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Public Defender (SBPD), offers a Holistic Defense Program for women who have committed misdemeanors or low-level felonies. Since women are often primary caregivers for minor children, female incarceration can have lasting impacts on entire families. To reduce the likelihood of a client reoffending, the program provides a social worker to help the offender deal with the life circumstances that contributed to her criminal behavior—connecting her with services such as safe housing, employment, education, child care and drug rehabilitation. A $65,000 Women’s Fund grant funded a second FSA social worker to expand the Holistic Defense Program to 55 women and their children.

Isla Vista Youth Projects (IVYP), founded in 1971, provides comprehensive assistance to children and families regardless of income, strengthening over 3,000 families annually with needed support and services. In 2008, seeing that unstable housing and food insecurity were making it difficult for many children to do well in school, IVYP and the Goleta Union School District (GUSD) began a Family Advocate program in three GUSD schools with preschools. Started initially with a 2008 Women’s Fund grant, the program proved successful in helping low-income parents access public resources for food aid, health care and cash assistance. In 2019, a $55,000 Women’s Fund grant funded IVYP’s program expansion by adding another Family Advocate to serve in three additional Title One elementary schools.

PATH Santa Barbara offers shelter to men and women who have become homeless for different reasons: lost jobs, high medical bills, divorce, death of a spouse, displacement from renovated properties, mental health issues, and addiction. On average, women in the interim housing program stay two to four months. PATH Santa Barbara was spending more than $12,000 per year fumigating bed bugs from its very old wooden bunk beds and mattresses. A $50,000 Women’s Fund grant funded the purchase and installation of 50 new steel-frame beds and 50 bug-resistant, waterproof, easy-to-sanitize mattresses for the women’s section, plus costs to dismantle and dispose of old beds.

For 28 years, Sarah House has been the only facility exclusively providing 24 hour-a-day residential hospice care for vulnerable, low-income and homeless individuals with terminal illnesses. In 2019, the agency served 50 residents. Using a well-worn and outdated kitchen, it was difficult for staff to prepare the needed 10,000 meals and snacks yearly. A $95,000 Women’s Fund grant funded a complete kitchen renovation, including new appliances, plumbing, counters, cabinets and flooring. This provides a nurturing hub where staff, friends and family can prepare and share food.

WHY JOIN?

Why should you join the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara? Because...

IT’S POWERFUL. Your donation, combined with others, will create larger grants and have a bigger impact on our local community than most of us can have on our own.

IT’S EDUCATIONAL. You will learn about critical community needs and effective programs transforming innovative ideas into viable solutions.

IT’S EASY. You don’t have to do anything more than donate and vote to make a difference. No fundraisers. No tickets to sell.

IT’S ENGAGING. Celebrate and meet our grantees at receptions, site visits and in-depth informational forums. If you want to get more involved, there are volunteer opportunities with the Women’s Fund and with the many nonprofits the Women’s Fund has supported.

IT’S EFFICIENT. Contributions are wisely managed in order to maximize the impact of your tax deductible* donation in the community. Hardworking volunteer leaders, generous underwriters and modest event fees help offset the expenses of our growing membership.

IT’S FUN! You’ll meet interesting women committed to improving the lives of local women, children and families and creating lasting change in our community.

HOW TO JOIN

The Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara welcomes all women to become members. It’s easy! You make a tax-deductible* donation and join as a Group Member, an Individual Member or both. Your donation can be made online with a credit card or by sending a personal check, foundation or Donor Advised Fund check, IRA distribution or stock transfer. Instructions are on the website under the “Join/Renew” tab.

• Join as a Group Member with a suggested minimum donation of $275. Each group reviews the ballot of potential grants and votes together to select specific projects. For every $2,750 donated annually, the group receives one vote.

• Join as an Individual Member with a donation of $2,750 or more annually. Each Individual Member casts her own vote after reviewing the ballot of potential grants.

Women who join or renew by December 31 are eligible to vote in the following spring when we select our new grantees.

If you have any questions or you want to start a group with your friends, family members or colleagues, the Women’s Fund is happy to help. Just email us at [email protected].

It’s simple to join or renew: Go to womensfundsb.org
